panasonic gd88 okay???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

hi there,
i've just won a used panasonic gd88 over ebay for 185 shipping included. i thought this was pretty cheap but the thing is he said it's been in the wash but the phone, camera, incoming, outgoing calls, all work perfectly fine because he dried it out for 2 weeks.he was even sent me some pictures of the phone turned on. i checked his feedback and 100% positive and seems legit and i emailed him told him if the phone is bad upon arrival i'm going to leave negative feedback and report him to ebay.

anyone think this is okay and possible??

also i've read the sticky and it says the gd88 is the same as the gu87 and all other version but does the data cable work on both ? also i see on ebay there are two different cables .. one is data cable and the other is unlock and firmware cable ? are they really different ? on the http://www.74bird.com/panasonic page it just says data cable is fine for updating firmware, transfering pics, loading thems and language packs ?? please help i'm hoping to get my phone by the end of the week and if it's working i'll get the cable by the end of next week.. any help would be appreciated thanks in advance ..

Well i think if he stated the phone was "as is" and such on the auction, then you had agreed with the terms of the sale and leaving him a negative and reporting him would be extreme. But if it works that's a very good deal

And get a datacable, you can cover pins 4 and 10 to use it as a flash cable.. so it's 2 in 1.

okay i'll just cross my fingers and hope it works .. i also read that if ur phone does go into the wash it could still work if u don't turn it on right after but letting it dry out ?? is this true ?

Posted by: HK2NR

Kinda iffy, i've seen some phones live through the wash if completey turned off before entering the wash.. since there's no current that's actually flowing through to cause anything to short. However, there are some that act erractically, for example this V60 i was given, it wouldn't let me go into the phonebook or menu unless i push another button after i push the phonebook or menu button. The bootup only showed half of the motorola logo then stops and locks up sometimes.

can u go here and check out the pictures and see if there are anything wrong with them ? http://photos.yahoo.com/jack_d12 i don't know how to post the full size pictures but it shows full reception and full battery and the colors look fine there are two pictures there thanks ..

Posted by: HK2NR

It looks okay physically. The colors are still vibrant. But it's hard to tell exactly if there is anything wrong with it through pictures. Hopefully it works for you cause that is a very good price.

thanks for all the help HK2NR i'll post again if it's delivered alright .. thanks again ..

one more question .. if i get the data cable .. will i still need a infrared cable ? or the data cable will do the job for everything ..

Posted by: torturedspirit

The data cable will complete the job
USB cable i recommend, not serial.

Posted by: jack_d12

isn't serial better because usb has problems w/ com ports ?

Posted by: mavericke

I believe the usb is better than serial. I have been using the usb and it is doing very well.

thanks for all the replies i haven't recieved my phone yet .. damn airborne express .. the guy sent it express overnite and they put a wrong code on it and sent it to denver(where ever that is) he sent it last week tuesday and i'm getting it this week tuesday ... once i get my phone i'll get the usb cable .. but would u have to configure com ports ?

Posted by: HK2NR

damn man that sucks, hope you get it soon. The USB cable will assign a com port so no worries there.

Posted by: roddy22

I need the drivers and some software for the usb data cable. My lead din't come with any.

You guys got any links?

Oh and I've dropped my girlfriends phone down the toilet one time after a few drinks. Dried it out and it worked fine. As long as the phone isn't on and isn't switched on it shouldn't be too bad.

ok i got my phone but it's not turning on ... i've put the battery in the fridge since it's been in transit for more then a week ... before i did that i had the battery in and tried to turn it on but it didn't turn on. then i tried to connect the charger and turn it on .. still no luck.. then i notice when the charger was on the orange light in the front turned on ?? what does all this mean ?

Posted by: HK2NR

The orange light means it's charging

Posted by: jack_d12

but it doesn't turn on ?? and there's no animated battery charging indicator ?? i'm figuring that since the light is on the phone wasn't damage or anything hmmm... i've tried keeping batteries in the fridge if they don't work then after it would turn on again ... i'm hoping this would work ...

update:
Okay after putting the battery in the fridge for about two hours the phone is now charging and turned on. tested camera and everything is working fine but i want to know where the infrared thing is ?? i can't seem to find it on the phone.

Posted by: nokia7210

the infrared is that dark little area right underneath the button on the front of the phone

Posted by: HK2NR

Awesome, glad to hear that the phone is working man. Now go have fun flashing firmwares like me

Mind you the infrared isn't all that great, only one file transfer at a time . If you have a lot of things to transfer it'll get on your nerves, unless you're a very patient person. Invest in a USB cable.

Posted by: jack_d12

wow the charge was quick only took about 3-4 hours ?? is that right? yeah thanks .. usually infrareds are located on sides of the phones never thought it was going to be on the front. thanks for all the help guys now let me go order a usb cable for this phone ...

Posted by: HK2NR

Yeah, 3-4 hours is about the same time that mine charges at. My car charger however is so quick.. don't know why lol oh well. Have fun

Posted by: jack_d12

okay i've got *#9999# code to work but it says i've got
7846GAD87A19-19
LPC-00037
Fri NOV 8 13:27:39 J

What does this all mean ? i'm assuming that my firmware version is A19 ?? what's the others mean ?

Also i've tried the infrared and you're right .. it's weak.. my computer says it found the GD87??? but after about 10 secs on my phone it says transfer fail or something like that ... how am i gonna send rings and graphics ?? and i found this edit tool software but it doesn't work ...

Posted by: nokia7210

i had to change the rate or something in the properties to the lowest setting (i think it was 96000) in order for it to transfer anything. this one wasn't a built in infrared port.

Posted by: jack_d12

it didn't work but it's on com 2 does it have to be on com 1 ?

Posted by: HK2NR

the coms shouldn't matter for IR transfers to the Gx8x. Usually i when my computer sees the phone i just double click that icon and find the file i want to send quickly and just send it and I haven't had a problem with that yet except for it being slow.

Posted by: jack_d12

hmm.. i don't think it's the phone .. i think it's my infrared ... when i double click on the icon .. nothing pops up ... i'm using winxp .. do i need a special program to send files ?

nevermind i went into control panel and had to enable the sending of files between infrared ... sorry .... shouldn't it be enabled default .. stupid MS software ..

but the edit tool software i got from panasonic.com still doesn't work ... it says communicating with handset then a box pops up and just says error ...

Posted by: HK2NR

Yeah the software from panasonic doesn't work with the IR, should with a cable, i haven't tried. I just used the software that came with the cable to transfer and save stuff now.

Posted by: jack_d12

okay just one more question ... how do i convert midi to mfm ?? i haven't read anything about it so i'm wondering if it's possible .. i'm able to convert wave to mfm and i figured out that the file limit is 50K but the midi are too soft. read that if u can convert them to mfm they will sound louder ?

Posted by: HK2NR

Try this place
http://www.gd87.it/eng/software.html

has a few midi, wav, mfm software. One of them lets you increase the volume of MIDIs. But i don't think you can convert MIDIs to mfm yet
