Data Cables for CDM 8600

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: bzerker

Hi,

First posting here, so excuse me if I missed this previously!

Just wondering what cables I can use for connection between my 8600 and my PC (Win2K, Serial or USB is fine). I've read that I can use any Audiovox data cable, but I just wanted to be sure before I buy one off of eBay and it doesn't work.

Up here they want $100 for the 8600 data cable (not suppose to be available in Canada) so I'm wondering if I can find anything cheaper... the phone was only $49.00!

From what I understand the CDM-8600 uses the DICU8300 cable which is compatable with the 8300, 8500, and 8600.

Any idea where I can get the DICU8300 in Canada? I looked around on eBay and couldn't find one.. and $100 seems a little steap... but I may have to bit the bullet.

Posted by: toyato89

speaking of data cables... i accidentally bought a DICU9500 (for the 9500 phone). I got it cheap and I'm not really wanting to go thru the hassle of selling it, so does anyone have a pin out diagram for the 9500 and the 8600? if i had those i could easily fabricate my own.. all i'd have to do is put a new end on it, which I have.

Posted by: Hexxboy

ebay.ca really sucks compared to its american counterpart.

I'd just grab the cheapest vox cable u can find on ebay.com.. e.g. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&category=35211 .

Dont expect it to come w/ any compatible software tho. Datacall passthru (to laptop/pda), toying w/ Gagin, you can do fine.

*EDIT - ok, maybe its not compatible w/ the 8600 after all? I dont know.. I know the dic1100 cable i bought is... hmm..

Posted by: Hexxboy

They're not the same plugs? I would've thought that they are.. considering i bought a dic1100 for my 8600.

Posted by: toyato89

no unfortunately they aren't... my old *** cdm-135xl has the same plug as the 8600, and i have a car charger so i can get the end off that, but the 9500 has less pins and they're a lot bigger, not like the tiny pins in the 8600, and theres also a round thing, which i'm assuming is for external antenna.

i just took apart the travel charger thing... theres 6 wires needed to charge the phone!

ok, so it has to likely have trickle charging and overcharge protection circuitry, but still 6 wires.. never woulda thought. this might be harder than I originally thought.

Google is your friend!

I just got a cable for my CDM-8900. It's been tricky finding drivers for it. But you should have more luck since the cable has been around for a while.

I found this:

http://www.audiovox.com/webapp/wcs/...12408&langId=-1

Posted by: toyato89

thats what i have cept its a MOK9500VW

vw for verizon i assume... if i can find a pinout i think everything will pan out.

Posted by: toyato89

hexxboy,

do u think you could possibly do me a huge favour and take apart the phone connector end of your data cable and let me know what wires correspond to what pins on the connector?? i'm having a hell of a time finding a pinout, and that would really help me.

let me know if you can do that.

thanks

I bought my data cable for my 8600 at bell world, Have you tried there And it is the same cable as the 8300/8500

Posted by: toyato89

we don't have any "bell world" stores in manitoba.. but we do have "mts connect" stores. I already asked about a 8600 cable when I bought my phone, and its $99, but thats for the usb one I think. The serial one I found on ebay for $2.99 but $8.00 (based on a 1 lbs. package) to ship it to Canada... last I checked a serial cable didn't weigh 1 lbs. unless it was like 100 feet long

Posted by: redwoodmtn

Audiovox web site has the cable and software for $69.00 Item number MOK8600. Look at accessorys for thr cdm8600 not the verizon version.

Posted by: bzerker

Anyone know if this would work? I'm not familar with the Audiovox Maestro 1032 (PDA)... I would imagine all Vox interfaces are similar...

eBay Link

Posted by: Hexxboy

No, the maestro's connector is much wider than the 8600.

Toyota89: do u still need the pinouts? I might have time this weekend to take a look~

Posted by: toyato89

hexxboy: yeah it would be much appreciated if you could have a look at the pin outs. let me know how u make out. thanks!

redwoodmtn: $69.00 for the MOK8600 is more than likely in US funds, and ordering it from there would be well over $99 canadian with shipping and possibly duty at the border.

What can be done with a data cable?

Posted by: toyato89

u can use the cell as a modem, transfer address book on and off, hopefully copy stuff to it... i'll find out sooner or later

Posted by: Houndog

Tonight I downloaded an image from my server, it looked a bit blocky when I viewed it but saved it anyway thinking it was OK. When I go into the settings to view the screensavers it hangs when trying to load it, every other image seems to load (show on screen) fine.

Now... if I had a data cable could I delete the image that is obviously 'wrong' or corrupted?

Posted by: toyato89

that's a good question.. too bad i don't know the answer

I hope so, because thats probably going to be a fairly common problem w/ newbies trying this out, and messing up a pic.

would be good to find out.

LOL,

I was blaming the phone not me

Of about 10 pics that I have modified and tried it is the only one that caused problems.

So toyato89 where are us Canadians going to get a cable at a decent price? There have been some on ebay but I refuse to pay $18.99 usd for shipping for 4 to 6 week delivery...

I run XP, the serial cables warn that they are not compatable with it.

Posted by: bzerker

Houndog,

Here in Ontario you can pick one up at some Bell World, or in Toronto the Baka Stores have them... they are $99 CDN which is about the same as I can find them for on eBay,... I found a few for $40 USD, but with exchange/shipping and the hassle of waiting for it, it works out to about the same... so a lot easier to just go out and get it yourself.

Posted by: toyato89

Hhaha I wasn't aiming that comment at you... I just know for sure that some noob is gonna mess something up copying something and need help at some point.

I'm trying to modify my 9500 USB data cable to work in the 8600. I think the USB drivers for Windows are generic across all phones. I took a look at the INF files today and it says "Toshiba" all over the place in there, and any mention of Audiovox is just like "Audiovox Modem" or something generic. Also, I am really hoping that the data cable is just a straight up connection to the USB port (like the cable I have now), and not thru some dumb circuitry, or else I'm screwed.

Posted by: Hexxboy

SORRY DUDE, i've tried taking apart my plug-end and it will not come apart .. without me possibly wrecking it

I also tried pinpointing the ends w/ a meter, but its soo darn hard. There are just too many wires.. 9 on the serial side, 20 on the phone side, thats like 180 combos. and the pins are so darn small.

I think you might be better off w/ ebay. Pick up the cheapest dic 1100 cable u can find.. e.g.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&category=35211

Posted by: toyato89

crap! oh well such is life.

Just curious though, what have you been able to do with the serial cable in terms of functions? Someone also posted it doesn't work with XP, but I'm sure the software it comes with won't work with the 8600, so what program are you using?

Posted by: Hexxboy

Do a search on "GAGIN". Its a hacked brew apploader and essentially it allows u access to the electronic file system on your phone. You can replace ringtones, screensavers.

Posted by: Houndog

But can I delete a screensaver that I downloaded? (my corrupt image)

Posted by: Hexxboy

yes.. theres actually a backdoor funciton i know of which is used to delete the EFS.

Unforunately, I have never tested it, and i dont know the extent in which it deletes files.. so i dare not share it ~~

Posted by: Houndog

Looks like you will have to test it on your phone to see if it is ok for me to use

I would like to get rid of this 'hanging' image...

daily show w/ john stewart

Posted by: toyato89

so i'm lookin for gagin and i found a place to download it... it says its for the vz moto T720, and theres like 4 different gagins to download.

which one do i get, or is there a better place i didn't find?

please direct me to there if there is one.

Posted by: Hexxboy

Get all of them, and start working backwards w/ the latest I guess. I think I used the one w/ balpatch 9 or 8..

Posted by: toyato89

well, actually the place i found sucks because the guy "disabled downloading" and he will email any file you've registered to receive at 1am or something... buncha crap if you ask me. plus i "signed up" to get something and he never sent it...

anyways, that's all i've been able to find since, so if you know of a place where i can download it, please let me know.

thx

p.s. i got the wap site downloading working so i might not need the new data cable after all, unless you can copy/delete/etc stuff in the phone's EFS with it. then I might buy one. has anyone found out any more fun things they can do w/ 8600's and gagin?

Posted by: TtAudi703

Does a serial cable provide the same features as the usb cable, but without the drivers?

Also, would this cable work for a Audiovox 8500

http://www.originalwireless.com/dic-1100.html

Thanx for your help

Posted by: toyato89

yeah it probably would work w/ an 8500. you need gagin instead of the software tho, b/c the software for it is not compatible with xp or the phone or something.. not sure, but i know it doesn't work.

Posted by: cellMonster

There's another thread regarding this.
http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=DIC-8300
It suggested a website and where you can find the cable for $20 US.
If you have no problem shipping it from the states, might be an excellent option.
$20 + $7 =$27 US *1.5 exchange = ~$40 CDN.

Still better than $99 at Bell

Or better yet, $5 CDN gets you a pint of gleaming cold beer..

Posted by: Positron

Even better, CellMonster - the exchange rate is currently 1.3:1 not 1.5:1, so your US$27 is C$35.10, not C$40.50

Look, there's another beer!

Posted by: Positron

My first post... says I'm "distracted by phone while driving"...

Let me just say, that bright LCD screen makes one helluva nightlight for finding things in the car while my wife is driving in the hinterlands of Nova Scotia on the shortest day of the year!!

Thanks for the tips, folks. I'm moving from a Nokia 8165 to this Audiovox, and I intend to port over all my phone number entries using data cables instead of wearing the tips off my fingers punching them all into the new phone... all 173 of them.

Now... about that beer... :

i paid 20.00 bucks for my data cable for my audiovox 8600 then 7 bucks for 3 day delivery, and 3 bucks tax, came up to like 30.00 and i got it, and it works...= )

Posted by: Sergenty

very good price!
but here we must paid in CAN $
you are the benefit of US $
exchange = ~ 1=1.33
but here no competition just 3-4 companies sell items and the prices are higher !
many many competition in USA is very good not a monopole

I'm thinking the software that comes with it won't support the 8600.

Has anyone made a cable for the 8600? I have the 8600 from Verizon and want to play around with it. Both my wife and I got the same phone so I was thinking about splicing her power cord and taking the connector and making a USB cable.

Does anyont know if this will work?

TIA!!

Well, if ya want just the cable
go to ebay
search for 8600 data..........
can usually find the cable for $15-20
I bought as the MOK for the 8300/8500.
(cable works with the 8600), but not the phone book software......
Most seem to be the Verizon packaging.

DOES ANYONE HAVE THE USB DRIVERS FOR THE PHONE ????
