Sony Ericsson's "Replacement Unit"

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

First I would like to greet all the fellow HoFo members here a happy thanksgiving and I hope all goes well for you, Sony Ericsson or not.

Anyway, to begin, since I've had a P800, I've had numerous problems with it including having it be repaired 4 times.

Click here for more info on my case.

Anyway I e-mailed the SEEE Executive Escalation Dept and one month and two BBB complaints later, I recieved the "replacement" P800 for my defective one. Leave now if you have bad stomachs!

First, here's my shiny orignal P800 in all it's glory:

Then, here's Sony Ericsson's "replacement unit" straight from Carrollton, TX:

Only the first layer of the touchscreen LCD, called the digitizer is cracked so the unit actually works fine. But when you pay over $600 for a phone, you can't expect this. And you should see the box, they banged it up like a hobo alleyfight. And the funny part, I actually believed it was going to be new and I was getting ready to sell it without opening the box. Imagine what would have happened to me if I sold it without looking at it!

You can forget about getting a new one. Nobody gives a new phone in exchange for an old damaged one under warranty, as long as they have one of similar age that is repaired.

The reason you get a replacement is because taking your specific unit in, repairing it, then shipping it out would take far too long. Instead they just ship a refurbished one.

As far as the damage goes, I doubt SE sent that one out with the cracked screen. If the box is damaged, it's highly likely it was damaged in transport. You'll just have to ask for a new(refurbished) one.

My phone was new when I got it, my first repair was after 1 week of purchasing the phone so my phone was'nt "old and damaged". IT only had around 20mis on the lifetime without being reset.

And the reason I got a replacement was not because they thought repairing it would take so long. In fact, that's all they wanted to do,just repair it and repair it for the 5th time! I had to file a complaint with the BBB (US government agency of consumer affairs) to even get them to replace it since they could'nt repair it after sending it in to them 4 times

I'm not going to ask for a refurbished one, they had enough chances to provide me with a working phone. I'll either get a new one from SE or file again in small claims court for the full $2,500 without taking any settlements

Plus, when they were supposed to "replace it" they took out the stereo headset and one stylus and the box is beat up so they're going to replace the whole thing.I'm not going to tolerate any more BS from them

I would advise you to read my full case I posted above
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...ony+%2Bericsson

and to add, since I posted, I had to send in the phone for repair one more time before I got them to send out this "replacement unit"

Ahhh, sorry mate, I didnt notice you had a link to the description of your problem. That puts the whole thing in a new light indeed.

Here in Norway we have consumer laws which regulates all this, and that clearly says if the same error occurs a third time, the manufacturer will HAVE to either give the money back, or give a completely new product.

In my opinion its a good compromise. I work in a shop where we sell phones among other things, and I feel we should be able to repair errors(especially as it's the consumers fault in about 80% of the cases), but the consumer should not be needlessly hassled like you have in your case.

Hope it works out for you.

Unbelievable, That is so sad. You’re really getting the shaft as far as SE goes. I sure hope to not have any problems with my SE phones because with a report like yours it doesn’t give me much confidence in sending mine in for repair.

Really sorry to hear you’re being treated like this and hope that the out come will be to your favor in the end.

What about those consumer laws in Germany anyone can tell? I am having some problems with a faulty P900 I bought there, and the guys from the shop do not give me better ideas than wait till the mobile is out here in Spain in January and use the international warranty then, but I guess I could get a new one from them better and sooner, any idea on this? regards.

Dont worry you wont get SH*T out of them. I hate SE support. I sent a P800 almost a year ago to them and never received anything. Its still being investigated by them. I and one other SE person says you may have sent it to a person that x-worked at SE and they took your phone. Well if I get a lawyer and all that crap its not worth it. I HATE SE SUPPORT!

They basically robbed my for a old P800 I had. I thought about suing them but im nobody compared to SE. Good luck and try to get somewere becouse im not

Happy Thanksgiving!

Jucame,

This is one of many reasons to wait until the phone is officially released in your country before you buy it. I know most of us can not wait that long, though.

Because you got your phone so early, your phone may be a code warrior phone, a prototype phone, or a grey/black market phone. I believe that SE has no legal obligation to support such phones. SE has supported such phones in the past, so they will very likely support them in your country once they have been released for that country.

If you got it through a proper distribution channel, then you should get full support once the phone is supported in your country.

Aw crap. I just sent my P800 back for the second time. They upgraded the firmware, but "forgot" to fix the little problem where I cant charge the damn phone!!

Their support definitely sux, but if it wasnt for the fact that I really like the P900, I'd probably have nothing to do with them.

Good luck Cmc0.

Thanks for your support guys, I still had a good thanksgiving (except for some bad turkey that creeped onto me late last night!)

Anyway, I'll filed a BBB complaint and a small claims form against them. These mostly work since it takes about one month for the courts or BBB to respond so it gives the company time to settle, if they chose to do so.

Allglobaltk, have you tried to file a BBB complaint or a small claims court form. BBB filing is free and with small claims court, the fee for filing is no more than $20 and in most states, you don't even need a lawyer, it's just you,the balief and the judge

Just like People's Court! "Five minutes to Wapner, five minutes to Wapner. Yeah."

Such a shame to have to go thru all that when $600 was laid out for their product.

Well, they have around 2 weeks to send me out a new one before the case goes through, so the ball in in their court now.

Allglobaltk, if you need more info on small claims filing, PM me for more info or contact you're local attorney/courthouse

Update: Today, when I got back to my house from my Thanksgiving, a package from FedEx was waiting for me. When I opened it, it was a replacement P800, but the thing is, that it's the same unit I had to keep on sending in over and over again!I have vertified this by comparing IMEI's on the box and the system menu. I know this one is also defective because like my orignal one, it keeps on freezing at the "Sony Ericsson" startup logo and it gets KERN-EXEC 3 errors when browsing. I'm tired of Sony Ericsson's bull with replacements. I just need one unit that ****ing works, not repeated defective POS

Posted by: rickpaul

There is a KERN-EXEC error that happens when you are changing applications too fast. It happens to every P800 when you use the jog dial forward and back in the applications screen with the flip open.

I am afraid SE may move on and never fix such a huge, and annoying bug.

Thats terrible.

Posted by: L Bo

I get that KERN-EXEC error when the browser is loading too much on my P900 also.

Oh well.
