ok i've just read the users manual (now i know why you all call it a POS users manual, cuz it contains absolutely nothing of a usable nature =P) but any way my questino is this (btw this is for a AudioVox 8600)...

whats the deal /w this built in answering machine? does it interfere with the fact that i have also voice mail (with my service provider) or would it benefit me in some way?

i'm not exactly aware of how this answering machine workz.. if someone could clairy it for me it woul dbe great... thanx.

The phone can be set to answer the call and store the message. I have not found out how to change the message voice to my own though. It basicly stores the message in voice memo form allowing a total of 10 voice memos. There is a configuration to set how many seconds the phone waits before it answers. Only benifit I see is that the message is on the phone and not in voice mail so you can retrieve it faster. Might end up being cheaper to. Big draw back I see is not being able to use your own personal message. I am not sure if the phone will alert you with a bep as it does with voice mail.
It will answer and take a message if you have a signal. Its also supposed to act like an answer machine where you can hear the caller leaving a message and screen your calls but I can not seem to get that to work. If the phone is off or no signal the call goes thru to the voice mail.

thanx Greg...

so i have to activate this feature on the phone right (answering machine) or does it come pre-activated? like i'm pretty sure i'm not going to use the answering machine function b/c i have free voice mail /w my plan anyway... so is it pre-activated and i have to shut it off or vice versa?

I believe it is off by default. If a call is answered by your 'answering machine' you get charged the airtime (as you would to retrieve a voicemail), I 'm not sure that one feature would be cheaper than the other. Being able to screen calls might be neat but I have a bad habit of just answering a phone when it rings

It can be turned on in voice services. I accidently turned mine on and it took awhile to figure out why my phone was answering the calls. My wife gave me the clue saying a womans voice came on saying leave a message. It was set to 5 seconds. I changed it to 18 seconds. It works good for me as I leave it at my deask and sometimes walk away for a few mins. Verizon used to charge more for a voice mail call than reg air time. Not sure if thats still true.
