P900 in the UK

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Degeneration-X

hey all i am wanting a P900 on Orange, anyone know any retailers that have them in stock at a nice price (cheap as i will be taking a high tariff out)

Posted by: josepho

Well, if you could forgoe getting it on Orange you could get it for free. Any O2 store (I work in one) will give you the P900 for free as long as it's on O2 400 (£45) or above. For that you'll get 400 minutes anytime, any network, 50 texts as standard, but an extra 400/month for first 3 months. You can change your tariff down after 3 months.

I'm seriously considering this myself... even better with staff tariff discounts

Cheers

I spoke to my local O2 shop this afternoon. They have 6 coming in tomorrow and the deal is correct. Looks as if I will be parting company with Orange after 4 years.

It is the O2 shop in Bluewater shopping centre near Dartford in Kent.

im sure you could blag the same deal on orange especially if your doin an upgrade you can go onto a high tariff for 2or3 months get the phone free and then return to your original tariff!
im also tryin to do the same with orange and getin my p900 nxt wk ive alredy bin in to ask for an upgrade and by bartering alredy got 50 quid knocked off from 250 to 300? know its still not cheap but theres always money to play with on a upgrade?! and im on a reasonably low tariff about £40 a month?!
also try takin in a copy of the o2 offer or tell them you are goin to cancel youre orange contract or ring customer services and tell them you want to finish your contract and have your number ported and they will instantly try to make deals to keep you as a customer! this has worked for me in the past and orange have always bin very good to me!

i also want a p900 and want to stay on orange if possible so will try to push them as hard as poss also if you upgrade b4 the 24th of dec i think youll get £25 off your first bill, a half price voucher for a bluetooth headset and a 10% voucher for accs?! maybe you alredy know all this tho?

if not looks like i may also be heading to o2 aswell?

let me know how you get on and ill do the same hopefully well both get a good deal on this superb phone! whatever way it takes im gettin one!!

Spoke to a chappie at my local O2 store, and they confirmed that on the 400min plan it is free. Will let you know as soon as I get mine tomorrow!!!

Posted by: Bagpuss

I can definitely confirm the deal, as I picked up a free P900 from the Yeovil o2 store on Saturday. I'm on the Business 400 tariff, and it's costing me £45/month for the first three months.

A friend of mine also got one on the same day, but from the o2 store in Cambridge.

As soon as I heard about the o2 deal, I returned my Orange P900, and headed straight down to the o2 shop. I thought I'd got a good deal by getting the P900 for £120 from Orange, but you just can't beat free :-)

To cap it all off, the P900s that o2 are currently supplying are SIM free. I popped my work Vodafone SIM in, and it works just fine :-))

The only downside (if there is one), is that the firmware on the o2 P900s is not as new as on the Orange version.

My Orange P900 had the following firmware:

Phone: CXC162022 R3B004
Bluetooth: CXC12529 R5D
Organiser: CXC162021 R1C01
CDA: CDA162004/3 R2B01

On the o2 P900 the versions are:

Phone: CXC162022 R3A024
Bluetooth: CXC12529 R5D
Organiser: CXC 162021 R1A05
CDA: CDA162004/14 R2B01

The only difference I can see between the two (apart from the Orange branding) is that the later firmware seems to have a hi-colour icon set, which does make the phone interface look more polished (with the new screen and all).

Bagpuss.

I work in one of the O2 stores, so its definitely on. It's a great deal, but then not any old Tom, **** or Harry'll come in looking for a P900 so I'd say O2 will often take on high value customers this way. These offers are O2 Retail wide, but the "All handsets free (subject to tariff)" offers can change with some regularity, so you can't rely on this being on permanently. Anyway, just to decide now whether I need (read: want & can afford) a third contract... Think I'll go for it - my mum's been nagging for X-Mas present ideas - they can give me the money! Cheers guys

still wana get mine on uprade on orange howdya get it for£120?

My store have not received them today, but are expecting them tomorrow. Phone still free on 400 min tariff

Hope you have many happy hours with your new toy.

Think i might have to return my p900 back to orange as i upgraded for £199. Will try and make sure the nearest o2 shop has one and the offer is on before i return the phone.

Posted by: josepho

So what do you UK katz think of the P900. Of course, I've had a good play around with it, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get one... just interested in what you think.

Just now I have an NK6310i and O2 XDA... Perhaps the P900 would properly consolidate the two, and allow me to carry just one fricking phone, eh?

Cheers

Posted by: Degeneration-X

it just blows my mind with what it can do.

i just love the phone and can't wait to make use of all the features, i showed my mum the bluetooth to my old (her new) T610 and she was like how can it do that ?? lol

that just blew her mind so think of what the P900 did its self.

CraZy

i would not think twice about buying it again

Posted by: josepho

I mean, the XDA is good, for features, and there's loads of software available, however, it's big, cumbersome, crap as a phone... I'm looking for something different... should this be it?

Cheers

Posted by: Degeneration-X

well i have not played with a XDA but i would say this does almost anything anyone would ever want in a mobile phone

I know the P900 has a viewer for reading Word, Excel & Powerpoint files, but I'd like to know: is there anyway to edit these files - esp. Word - even through a third party piece of software? Cheers

Just collected mine today from O2. Got it for free on O2 400 tariff. Waiting for it to charge then of we go.

Posted by: darkmark

thinkin bout gettin my p900 on o2 as its free but how much are you guys payin for gprs?

dm

Posted by: josepho

Well, anyone who connects to O2 will, at the moment, be connected to the O2 Data Sense package. Although I don't remember the exact prices, we're talking about a tiered system, in which, the more you use, the less you pay per MB. The first 100kb are free, after which it's £2(+VAT)/MB for a few MBs, dropping lower and lower as you go up the scale. For WAP, using the GPRS APN (wap.o2.co.uk) you won't be charged until Feb 1st 2004 (subject to a fair use policy - no more than 5MB/month if I remember correctly).

Any more questions ask here or PM me.

Cheers

Posted by: darkmark

just got the new o2 brochure today and aswell as this tiered system u mentioned it quotes a "data 5" for £8 a month you get 5mb of info and its £1 per mb afta that?!

is this just a sort of o2 bolt on type thing that i add the extra £8 to my contracton top of call plan and texts?

dm

Posted by: josepho

Well, yes and no. As far as I'm aware, data 5 was taken off the list of options at the end of October. It's now only available (I think) as a standalone data tariff, though I was sure it was £15...

It's really not something many people take to be honest... Excuse my ignorance.

Anyway, cheers

Posted by: darkmark

no its cool! at least somone knows but wadya mean by a standalone data tariff???
well from what i can work out the tiered system actually works out cheaper anyway! as u say free for the 1st 1ookb then £2 till 1mb then £1.36 till 5mb so from my basic maths this works out at £7.44 for 5mb!!
then £1.19 till 10mb which works out at £12.20 for 10mb if im right actually quite reasonble!?
i am working this out right??? cos in the brochure it quotes 100kb-1mb, 1mb-5mb, 5mb-10mb and so on. so i worked it out on the baisis that the 5thmb is at the chaper rate so you only pay for 4mb at each price?
(ive just left uni and am still a poor student but have to have this phone!)

at the mo im gettin 10mb for £4 a month on orange! but there tryin to screw me for £300 for an upgrade and thats a lot of gprs and o2 are better value on txts!!

guess the gprs has something to do with o2 active? is this just the o2 homepage and features?!

cheers josepho

dm

Posted by: josepho

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

O2 Active just means WAP. Sure, you can access the O2 homepage, but also other WAP sites. Problem is, it won't let you d/l anything but WAP content, so POP3/IMAP email, html sites, etc are all out. For them you've got to use the Mobileweb GPRS APN... which is chargeable. Confusing? A standalone data tariff is for users who only use their device for data. Such tariffs have no inclusive minutes or texts. You can still make these, but you'll be charged for all - same prices as O2 100 I think... Cheers

Posted by: darkmark

josepho
so to use the opera browser on p900 i just use the gprs services?

im guesin u work for o2 dont suppose you could give me the phone nos of the stores in leeds sheffield and newcastle or anywhere around york that may have a p900 instock cos my local york store are out and i wana get one this thurs or fri!!!
is it poss for u to check the stock at other stores? soz i know this is askin a lot but i guess u can appreciate how much i want the phone!!!???

cheers again

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

Sorry mate, I'm at uni today, not working 'til tomorrow night... You'll probably find it on the o2 website. Unfortunately we can't check other store's stock... only by phoning. I'm sure you'll be able to find one, even with the offer! Good luck, cheers

Posted by: josepho

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

As for the Opera question: yeah, you'd have to use the (chargeable) Mobileweb APN. If you use the WAP one you'll probably just find it won't connect/download anything. In my experience, the WAP APN is slower - for HoFo on my XDA I use up my Data5 allowance over Mobileweb. It's faster & it allows more data per page: the wap APN has problems with pages which have long threads... like this one.

Posted by: darkmark

cool mate no probs looks like i may of found one in newcastle or durham anyway!!! yes!

just another quick q do you know how long this offer lasts as i went in to the york o2 store yest and he said he didnt think it would last for much longer?!

also i read on esato that people were not sure about the contract? it is right that you can go onto o2 400 for 3 months and get the phone free right?
but what guarantee is there that after 3 months you can downgrade your contract? cos the contract you sign is for o2 400 for 12 months! or is it normal procedure to be able to channge your account after 3 months orange style???
also mentioned was that some operators will allow you to downgrade your tariff but charge you for the remainder of the handset if you had taken it on that tariff???!!!
confused again!

another q is that apparantly orange users cannot update their firmware via the flash site? something to do with orange approving the firmware or something like that!

will it be poss to update the f/w from the website with an o2 handset?

any help?
thanks again

dm

Posted by: josepho

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

Well, I suppose there are no concrete guarantees - though this is standard procedure. Any problems you can always say you were sold the phone on that premise... As for getting charged more for the handset - I've never heard anything about that. It would be horribly impractical anyway. I really don't know when the offer'll end... Just when it ends I guess. As for the firmware, I haven't heard any reports yet either way. I'll try & find out though. Cheers

Posted by: CW188

Hey Guys,

Does anyone know of any 02 shops in London that are still doing the p900 for free?

Any help would be greatly appriciated! Many Thanks!

Posted by: josepho

As I said in my PM to you CWW188 - all O2 offers are the same in all the stores... so any of the London (or elsewhere) stores should do that for you. O2 400 is the lowest tariff to get it free, which'll come in at £45/month... although this can be changed down after 3 months.

Cheers

i have just read on

http://www.mobileshop.co.uk/mobilep...ricssonp900.php

that o2 does not yet support gprs or mms on the p900 suerely this cant be rite???

That's not right. Perhaps at the time that was written o2 had not accredited the phone. Basically, what happens is that before any phone is sold in O2 Retail stores - though indirect dealers can still sell them - the phone goes through a strict accreditation procedure with O2 engineers, to ensure compatibility with the services. I assure you you'll be able to use GPRS & MMS on the P900, and the settings'll be on the handsets (if purchased from O2 Retail). Perhaps what this meant was that O2 hadn't started to give support to customers with this handset because of accreditation, and as such hadn't published the set-up procedure (not that the settings are different anyway!).

Cheers

cheers josepho youve bin a great help and im goin to get my p900 on thurs as orange are still tryin to screw me for £300 for the upgrade!!!

ant news on the firmware upgrade from the se flash site?

cheers again

dm

Posted by: josepho

Well, I haven't got mine yet so I haven't tried to upgrade the firmware. I would certainly hope it would work, but there's only one way to find out... In fact, let me make some enquiries, I'll get back to you!

Cheers

Posted by: adam777

So how do those of you that have got the P900's like the phone. Saddly I dont live in the UK any more so I have to buy mine and cant get one free (lucky B*******DS is correct).

Im picking it up in the UK in a couple of weeks ($500 with VAT ughhhhh). Im particualry interested in how it handles WAP. Our providers are only just installing that here (Antigua) now and it will be interesting to get onto the same bandwagon as the rest of the world for a change.

Posted by: josepho

Well, adam777 I don't own one but have used one, and I'm liking it - very much, am gonna get one this week!

As for WAP - will you be using it over GPRS or just dial-up? Obviously GPRS'll be faster, and give you a better all round experience, also the bigger screen will allow your WAP experience to be much better than viewing 3 lines at a time on a tiny Nokia screen, or whatever.

My favourite thing about wap is: wap.howardforums.com

Means I can post/read from anywhere - university, the train, or my favourite, the loo!

Cheers

Posted by: adam777

will you be using it over GPRS or just dial-up?<<

Okay I'm going to show my ignorance and confess that I dont know the difference (and I am a web developer as well!).

As I live in a location without these services they are a mystery to me. Im assuming that GPRS is an always on system.

When we get it here on the island I'm willing to bet it will be a dial up service at a per minute cost. The three local providers have us by the short and curlys and get away with providing minimal service at maximum cost (to the consumer).

I want to get the best out of the device for the time Im in the UK though as nothing says Christmas like a pint of Guiniess and a new gadget.

Posted by: josepho

Well, yeah, basically CSD (circuit-switched data), aka dial-up is paid for by the minute, and is limited on GSM to 9.6kb/sec... yuck!

GPRS (general packet radio service) is a packet-swtiched system whereby you pay for the amount of data transferred, rather than the time spent online. The speeds for GPRS can reach 40kb/sec+, so a good improvement, although don't expect this all the time! It's still far better though!

If your provider is just starting to bring out data, and is in the habit of ripping-off customers then I'd think that CSD would be the only option, or GPRS would be very expensive, however, maybe they'll have a New Year's resolution to provide better service? Lol When you're in the UK GPRS is your best bet. It's offered by all providers, with the noteable exception of Virgin mobile (who piggyback off T-Mobile's service, but for some reason can't use their packet-swtiching service). I work for O2, so of course I'm gonna say "Go o2!", but really, just have a look at the prices, and see who works out best for you!!

Well, just got a reply for O2 Data Support, here it is:

"Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately we are not able to answer this, as we believe that this information would need to come from Sony Ericsson. We are not aware of any Network constraints on upgrading the firmware of the device.

You can contact SE on tel 08705 237 237 Ericsson (option 3 for handset support, option 5 for data support)

Kind regards
Mark
O2 Data Support"

Looks like they don't know of anything that would stop it, but aren't commiting themselves, well that's how I'm taking it anyway.

Cheers

Quote:

Whoa! I can move data faster with two old tin cans and a bit of string.

I'll give one of the techs here that I know a call (he looks after the towers for one of the providers) and see what they are installing. At that rate it kind of seems pointless.

AT&T are one of the new providers here but they are just getting into the market and have yet to get all their ducks in a row.

It looks like I'll be getting an O2 sim card for the p900 when Im in the UK then - its kind of pointless not to really try out the device to its fullest when I have the chance.

Right then I had better go do some work, the boss kind of expects it now and again.

Thanks for all your help.

Posted by: josepho

To be honest, if it's just WAP pages you're browsing, and you're reasonably patient, then it's not awful - it's better than a kick in the teeth, maybe...! I still far prefer GPRS, especially for HoFo on my XDA!

arite guys
can anyone confirm this offer is still runnin gettin mine tomorow and im sh!$#in it that the offer will of finished!!!

also a little tip to anyone get it from the cpw they will price match the o2 deal and match tha free txts deal etc! but the clincher is that the phone is a totaly unblocked phone as it would come direct from se!!! therefore no silly operator animations and features and can defo b flashed with firmware from se update site!
brilliant!

i nearly got it today but they have to ring o2 to check the deal is correct and o2 were shut so ill hav to wait till tomo, not sure if ill sleep!!! lol
anyway this is why ineed to know if tha deals still runin???

dm

Posted by: darkmark

another idea!

if the o2 deal has finished:

also another idea in the current cpw brochure p900 sim free is £329.99 when instore i saw it at about £550!
and the p900 is quoted at £329.99 wen taking out a o2 contract at cpw, so take out the o2 contract you want with either a free t610 or z600 for £50 and then also buy the p900 offline @£329.99 2 quality se phones on the same contract!!!
im thinking p900 for majority of use and t610/z600 as a going out phone on a night so not to wreck tha p900!!!
just a thought???

dm:evileye:

Posted by: adam777

also another idea in the current cpw brochure p900 sim free is £329.99<<

Damn I wish I had seen that - I just paid 500 pounds for mine sim free.

Ahh well, the nice thing about money is that you can always make more.

As we are all looking around for good P900 deals, a .com firm called Fones4Free are offering a P900 on a £25/month tariff for £160 plus 99p Discount Delivery Charge. The Plan is "Your Plan 120".
Although the minimum plan length is 12 months, presumably you can downgrade (if they do a lower one) after a period of time and this makes this an almost unbeatable deal.
I ask about this firm not because I have anything to do with them, I just wondered if anyone had dealt with them before? If it is genuine, looks like my P800 will be looking for a new owner, although unfortunately, I have a monthly contract with o2 that will be redundant unless the Orange phone can be unlocked. Can anyone confirm it can?
Thanks
Doug

Posted by: adam777

As for unlocking the p800 you may want to check out this link

http://www.expansys.com/forumthread...P800&thread=154

This (by the way) is the company I just bought mine from, as I live outside the UK (but will be there next week) I decided to get it from them.

Mind you I can claim the VAT back so really the phone cost 420 which Im prepared to live with.

It had better make me look DAMN COOL for that price though

Posted by: dougproctor

Thanks Adam for that. My P800 came unlocked although I got a SE T68i unlocked in Portsmouth for £15 with no problems. I am a bit wary about the P900 though, different animal!
Anyone else know?
Doug

Posted by: bigrob

Well, I can safely say that the O2 free P900 deal is still on. Got mine from the Bristol Galleries O2 shop last night.

My, ain't it purdy! Just got to spend a month playing with it now.

The lass in the shop couldn't beleive I'd heard about the deal on the internet, it almost seems to be a secret!

Posted by: darkmark

can anyone post the settings they are using for gprs and mms on o2 for their p900 and the settings and account u are using for opera

dm:evileye:

Posted by: martinwcooper

I just got mine for free on 02 in Manchester, but they told me they had changed the offer so I had to get it on O2 MAX at £75 pm!

Annoying that I just missed out, but if I change it after 3 months still works out cheaper than buying on O2400 for £299!

Just better think of how I can use 1000 minutes a month!

NB - if anyone DID get one today (12.12.03) for free on O2400 (i.e. if my store were wrong) then let me know! (Just so I can hit my head against the wall some more!)

Still love it though - great phone.

Wicked Forum

I am a noob when it comes to P900.

Been on orange for 4 years and have 6 lines (for my brothers & a few contract expired convert to OVP virgin tariff)
Have had an SPV for the last year. I was after one of :

P900
Sendo-X
SX1
6230
SPV E200

Checked all the sites on a daily basis.
Best I found was P900 £69.99 on Orange OVP 400 £45/month -- www.onestopphoneshop.co.uk
I have been buying 4 mobiles/yr on the net for the last 5 years.
A big orange fan.

Then on a little walk in town went to the Link, Orange shop, phones4u -- all wanted £200 ish and a big contract for the P900.

Strolled into O2 and lo & behold P900 for free @ 45/month (400x-net & loads of txt , can drop after 3 months) + 25% off all Bluetooth.

I dropped Orange like a bad smell – (its all X-net now anyway) and walked out with a spankers P900 & Jabra Bluetooth headset all for a measly £37.50.
Believe me I hunt bargains like the best of em & this I didn’t even have to think about.
14-day money back anyway --

The phone is amazing & u cannot beat the deal – HOW THE FCUK can they do it???

PS.

Anyone know how to get opera working??

Hooray! Have just spoken to the O2 shop and they have confirmed they were wrong yesterday in telling me it had to be on 02 Max so they are going to change me onto O2 400 straight away!

Nice one 02!

Superb! I'm so glad you've all found O2 so good for deals. Over the past month or two they've really become more competitive - for a short while we had very few discounts to give and it was difficult to compete, but this "All phones free" offer is superb. For anyone reading this who isn't into the P900, note that you can also get almost any phone O2 sell free on certain tariffs. The XDA/XDA II are excluded, but you can still get great deals, e.g.:
Samsung V200 : £30ppm
Siemens SL55 : £30ppm
Nokia 3200 : FREE on any tariff (even £15ppm)
Samsung P400 : £45ppm
Samsung E700 : £45ppm
SE P800 : £45ppm (though why with P900 at same price...?)
SE Z600 : free on £30ppm or only £20 on any other tariff

So, there are a fair number of things that we O2 stores are doing these days - and remember you get 25% off accessories when you purchase a phone - perhaps a hot new Bluetooth headset wouldn't go amiss?

Anyway, g'luck guys!!

Cheers

Have been in contact with http://www.fones4free.com this morning and the Orange offer of a P900 for £160 on a Your 120 tariff still stands. You can go up in tariff (£70 a month) and get a free phone. You have to stay with that tariff for 124 days then presumably downgrade it but what an offer!
The manager says that they are awaiting the phones from Orange but you can pre-order them from the website now.
I was not going to upgrade until much later but this has changed my mind and I have pre-ordered. I have nothing to do with this firm, only being interested in letting others know where to get one from. Can't wait!!

Yeeeee-haaaaaa! Found an O2 store with a P900 - offer is still on - they are holding it for me until Monday when I can get it.
Forget about trying to get it from a store in London - they don't have any!!

It shouldn't be too difficult to find them, although I know little about the situation in London. Last week our store got 5 delivered, as far as I'm aware only one has gone so far (and I bought it!)... so there's not a massive shortage of them. Just phone as many stores as you can, and I bet you'll find one or two...

I can't wait 'til Christmas day - P900 and HBH65... and a Belkin USB Bluetooth dongle! Aren't I lucky?

Well, a little update on the situtation. Looks like the P900 is going to be withdrawn from the All Phones Free offer. There was an in-tray in the O2 intranet retail site talking about the sale... it said that it excluded combined-devices, citing the XDA/XDA II & P900 as examples. I'd say, if you're gonna get it, get it ASAP!

On a lighter note, I'm getting an XDA II Sim-free for £149.99. Unfortunately it's one per employee, and you've got to sign a thingy saying you're gonna be the user. A brand-new P900 and XDA II... and HBH-65 - could I be the luckiest man alive?

Well, that's it - the P900 has been removed from the o2 All Phones Free offer. Came into work today and there it was on the intray. I'd thought it might've been on the cards - I dunno if they realized how many people would take advantage, could be expensive for them! To all those who got it - well done! To others - bad luck! Anyway, that's my news for today! In case you're wondering it'll now cost ?279 on any tariff! Cheers

I got my P900 from www.fones4free.com as previously reported. Arrived when they said, on Orange which seems better than my previous provider O2 as they do rollover minutes, cost me £160 with a £25 a month contract, downgradable after 4 months.
The phone is a dream!
