P900 Firmware Upgrade Here!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: BVH

It all worked flawlessly - The PC Client install and the launch of the update process.... until the final click - I got the message "The server is busy". I'll keep tying during the day.

http://homeflash.ericsson.net/updat...00/frameset.htm

I'll post the 4 newest version numbers when and if i get thru

Posted by: dundan

damn BVH you beat me to the post by like half a second!

Anyway try the firmware update site here:

http://homeflash.ericsson.net/updateservice/P900/

Posted by: dundan

I went the manual update route on the site and it looks like its only updating the organizer firmware.

It asks you to enter your CDA #, and it reported that my Organizer version is up to date (R1A05).

Posted by: BVH

Dundan, did you actually get thru a flash? I still get "The server is busy"

i also got the same message ??

i got thru the flash and then it said that i have the latest update.

Posted by: dundan

I went ahead and installed the seus_setup111.exe file. After opening the Sony Ericsson Update Service program (version 1.00?) I tried a force update eventhough the AUTOMATIC update said I had the latest firmware. The program turned on and off my phone but then I noticed that the sync cradle light was not lit. The status bar said that it required 20 minutes for the software to download and update WTF? Then halfway through the update, this error message came up:

"The application reported an undefined error
Please try again. If this problem persists please contact support. "

My phone is still working in its original state:
R3A024
R5D
R1A05
R2A01

Posted by: BVH

I've gotten as far as downloading 48% of the firmware program then got a server communications error. I think they may be taking it on and off line/testing, etc. There are lots of warnings about doing a backup before updating and to definitely NOT interact with the unit at all until the process is over. My phone started fine after the server communications error stopped the process. Probably because the update process had not actually started. One of the messages says that a full restore will restore all your settings, contacts etc after the new flash. I remember with the P800, some people lost the new firmware when a full restore was done after a new flash.

Posted by: simion_levi

No they didn't - they just thought they had because their backup overwrote the CDA number back to the previous one.

But considering that the CDA number is simply pulled from a text file which you yourself can alter to say whatever you want, no actual firmware change occurred.

Posted by: LarryH

I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOPEEEEEE!!!!! Just under 15 mins and I am updated. SE says a RESTORE is ok so I'll give it a whirl. Just wanted to report that it did work!

Posted by: dundan

Can you post your revision numbers before and after?

Posted by: Bengalboy

Great Larry!!! Good news to hear!! Gonna update this evening...

Posted by: oferlaor

any ideas if it will erase all the data on the phone?

Posted by: Genghis Khent

I just tried where I don't have the SynchStation though I do have a data cable. The update software required the SynchStation. So I will have to wait until tonight so see what happens.

Posted by: LarryH

Before the flash I believe I had CDA162003/3 R1A04

now I have CDA162003/3 R2A10

I failed to check the other rev #s.

Posted by: mrloopy

How long do I see this screen for? Been a few minutes...

Please wait...

Checking the installation of Sony Ericsson Update Service

Posted by: LarryH

A few things -- YES, it does erase all data and prompts NUMEROUS times to perform a backup beforehand. I had done so prior to the flash so I didn't need to do it using the update site.

SE certainly says it's OK to restore so I've done so. I haven't noticed any ill effects from that other than (as they tell you) voice tags won't be restored. It was nice to reboot the phone and see it "just as I left it."

The actual flash took just under 15 minutes and (I find this most interesting) I had failed to load all the drivers that seem to insure the usual Communications Suite items. (I removed them from auto starting since audevicemgr loads so much.)

Despite not having these loaded, the flash communicated with my phone and did the job.

At the moment, I'd say it was a rousing success.

Posted by: jmburt

larry

what improvements have you noticed with the firmware update?

is it worth updating now?

Posted by: LarryH

Hey, I barely finished it. And my phone's useless in my house and that's where I am. Right now -- BIGGER CLOCK on the powersave display.

Posted by: mrloopy

um, sorry to ask again, but how long did you guys get this screen for?

Please wait...

Checking the installation of Sony Ericsson Update Service

It seems to be stuck there. Or is it updating something?

Posted by: C-Dub

i did the manual check and it says that i have the latest firmware...

I have
CDA: CDA162004/14 R2A01
Organiser: R1A05

anyone else experience the same thing?

Posted by: TomTom

I tried 4 times and got an "undefined error" each time, after the download reached 1%.

There's no link yet to the update from the P900 support page, so maybe it's still a little bit transitional.

My phone is still ok. It is CDA162003/3

Posted by: nateblonde

Having a problem.
I download the software and installed it from the SE site; but what next?
I found the file under my program dir. and there are two folders there.
Can anyone guide me on what to do?

Posted by: mrloopy

Don't worry, working now. Norton Internet security got in the way...

Posted by: Jiffy

No need to update here:
Organiser: CX162021 R1C01
CDA: CDA162004/3 R2B01

Phone purchased last week on Orange here in the UK.

Posted by: Degeneration-X

mine said it was ok but here are my CDA and so on

Organiser: CX162021 R1A05
CDA: CDA162004/7 R2B01

got mine today on o2 in the UK

WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS MEAN?

"Your operator does not approve the usage of this service for this device.

Posted by: jmburt

larry
someone over on esato said the update includes the following:
THIS IS THE NEW STUFF IN R2B02

From SonyEricsson:

Improved sound quality in Office handsfree mode.
Updated Java support MIDP2 - MIDlet signed against Verisign certificate.
Improved capitalization in T9, now capitalizing characters properly.
Enhanced handling of accessories, Bluetooth headset, HBH-200, displays name and phone number of incoming caller.
The Clock screen saver digits has been enlarged for better visualization.
Find function in e-mail application has been improved.

Any truth to it?

Posted by: rudedog

I'm 50% done.

I also have the HBH-200 BT headset. I will test it ASAP and post my results when it finishes

Posted by: pseudonym

Well after numerous goes.. I finally got mine to download the full 100%.

Once the download is complete, the flash goes without a hitch. Restore works perfectly as well.

I think the biggest problem is that SonyEricsson servers are being hammered for people clammering for the update.. hence why timeouts are occuring. The actual software itself works very well

I can confirm T9 fix for capitalization. Not sure about HBH-200, mine doesn't arrive till tomorrow.

Good job SE!

Phone: R3C
Bluetooth: R5D
Organiser: R2B02
CDA: R2A10

//Edit// Whoah! T9 speed has gone up real fast. That's cool and the whole thing is feeling a little responsive. I know I had an old firmware but cool

Thats means you have an operator specific firmware. You will have to contact your network operator and ask them when they are having a version (or go to a service point and ask them to flash it).

Here in the UK, I believe Orange customers are experiencing the same message. I bought mine sim-free for just that reason.

Posted by: zygote

Finally managed to complete the update, versions as follows:

Before:

Phone CXC162022 R3B004
Bluetooth CXC 12529 R5D
Organiser CXC162021 R1B01
CDA CDA162003/5 R1A04

After:

Phone CXC162022 R3C006
Bluetooth CXC12529 R5D
Organiser CXC162021 R2B02
CDA 162003/5 R2A10

The numbers must differ depending on where you got your phone. Mine was bought in the UK, sim free.

And after all the hassle of trying to update, don't really notice any difference!!

Posted by: jettie1767

Can't seem to get beyond the 'Please wait....checking the installation of SE Update Service' screen.

What am I doing wrong?

Posted by: rudedog

confirmed, HBH200 now displays contact name and phone number on LCD

Posted by: pseudonym

@Rudedog..

Thanks for the update!

Mine arrives tomorrow and that was all I was worrying about missing

Posted by: BVH

FINALLY!! Once I was able to download 100% of the update, the flash went flawlessly. It took exactly 19 minutes.

Item Before After
Phone R3A024 R3C006
CDA R1A04 R2A10
Organizer R1A05 R2B02
Bluetooth R5D R5D

Took a few tries to restore. Kept getting the message that the device was busy, try again. After about 8 retries, it worked and the phone is completely back to "as-was" status with the new firmware. Have not investigated anything yet.

Interesting. I also got the "device was busy" message. Did what you did, just kept trying. When it worked, the P900 was back (minus voicetags) as it was.

I can confirm what others have. The HBH-200 now displays incoming caller ID on the display. Clock is larger, etc.

Posted by: BVH

I have noticed that while runing the Tracker Task Manager which displays available memory, with the identical programs running that I had before the flash, under the new firmware, I have gained about .45 to .5 of a MB in free space.

Posted by: AK_TT_P900

You can't run the update unless your phone is in the sync station fully charged or just about fully charged. Been using my phone for less than a week & happy that I bought it unlocked and happy that SE has already issued an update to the firmware!

AK_TT_P900

Posted by: L Bo

This thread just got sticky all of the sudden. Eww....

Posted by: pseudonym

The reason the phone is classed as busy is because the phone runs a background rebuild of various bits and bobs on it's first boot with the new firmware.

Leave it switched on for 5 minutes and then try a restore, it will then restore properly and you won't get that error message

The webpage that tells you that you are successful in updating has a link to "restore" and it has a java embedded timer that counts down .. nifty but Im sure most will miss it, if they anything like me.. they just want to check the phone boots!

Posted by: pseudonym

Sorry for double posting (again)..

But Im getting word from two of my friends on Orange with a P900, that the firmware won't update. Both have tried unsuccessfully to upgrade and will have to take them a service point to update with a non-orange build, before they can use the service in the future.

If any Orange users have managed to update, Id be interesed if you did anything special beforehand

I'm having the same issue, I think for me it's java-related since it asks to download some java component and then quickly transfers me to a MICROSOFT site where it says "this page cannot be viewed without MSJM(microsoft java machine), or something like that, it's really annoying, I don't know what to do. Anyone have any ideas?

Posted by: jettie1767

The update finally worked for me when I used Netscape 7.1. I tried IE and an older version of Netscape to no avail even with an updated Java JRE.

But, I'm just curious....why do we all have different fw versions after the update? If the version numbers change after the update, does that mean that I have the most current fw?

Posted by: sdsviet

man my laptop crashes everytime i get to the updating part. i think its my hardware. so i just installed all teh stuff on my roomies comp and now its taking forever to just search for the se updater. i wonder if it is because my internet is a lil slow or is it because se is packed with hofo members tryign to do the same thing. booo

Posted by: eurotrashboy

Finally worked! It feels a bit faster, and one major difference is the audio/video sync IS MUCH MUCH better. The audio actually matches the video, I don't know about everyone else but I had audio/video problems on the two P900's I have used, the audio was about a split second faster than the video and it was noticeable. Anyone else notice improved speed/audio+video sync?

hey, i hate to ask and ruin all the fun:

is there a p800 equivalent user installable update? or are we stuck sending em off for updates?

Same here had to install Netscape 7.1 before I could get the Update to run.

No go with IE6

I'm trying to flash the new firmware to my phone (p900) using the SE site and I get this message "there is currently no services for the devices belonging to your operator.
Also. I get this message too
"Your operator does not approve the usage of this service for this device.

note; I have tried this with the AT&T sim card out and with it in. I get the same results.

how do you guys uninstall the "Demo" application after the firmware upgrade??

Posted by: DJ Teknosys

Great, I thought I'd save a few bucks and get the Orange P900 from a buddy in the UK. Now it looks like I won't be able to do and firmware upgrades at all here in the states. I would say "forget it" and just get one from Expansys, but my P900 is on a plane over the Atlantic as I type....

Posted by: L Bo

I upgraded successfully and captured shots of the process as well. As soon as I can get a host, I'll toss up the pics.

Thank god from Broadband!

For those who are having java problems, Im going to try downloading the software on my un-javaed rig @ work. I expect a manual download & install of the Sun J2E runtime would fix the problems or Sun Java for web

Il know later on

Posted by: a_low

The Site worked great for me! Took about 20 minutes for the update to complete. My phone is unlocked and i had no error or problems!

Posted by: nateblonde

Well for those of you having the same problem as me.
I dont think it has anything to do with having an orange phone or not.
My phone is unlocked and was purchased from sony.
I tried chaging the sim card from ATT to Cingular, still nothing.
I think it might have to do with SBC my dsl provider. I have emailed SE support and maybe they will have answer.

To all you other guys who have done the firmware without any problems and have not help us poor suffering P900 users.
I hope you only get Cancer.

Microsoft no longer provide java for IE, they had a disagreement with Sun Microsystems and threw all their toys out of the pram!

Luckily you can go to www.java.com and download the proper java vm which works with all browsers.

Good luck mate.

I am on ATT and finally upgraded successfully after switching to Netscape 7.1 from IE 6.1 (dont think this is you're problem though) but I can assure you it is not because of the ATT SIM

I've tried loads of different methods but still it stops at 4% and says connection error.

Posted by: pseudonym

Cheech...

You just gotta keep retrying

The servers are no doubt being absolutely hammered at the moment, so timeouts occur when they are overloaded with requests.

Eventually, you will get a full download and the upgrade will go through ok

have to send off to a SE service point for a flash...

I got my phone flashed professionally to the latest f/w but I thought I would take a look at what SE was offering. It doesn't say anywhere that the upgrade you do yourself will also upgrade your phone section f/w to R3C. It only talks about and shows the organizer portion of R2B.

Has anyone done the upgrade where the phone f/w was also upgraded from say R2B to R3C?

Posted by: BVH

NateB... I hav SBC dsl and had problems in the early morning doing the upgrade but I attribute the problem to the SE servers being very, very busy not SBC dsl service. I finished the upgrade around 1 PM. I had to keep trying many times to get past the 4% and 48% download points.

Posted by: kesperse

well.. my update button is glowing.. =)

Posted by: LarryH

For those having non-server, non-operator version specific issues, here are a few things that have worked for others who were having troubles upgrading.

Disable any software firewalls (Zone Alarm, etc.) Disable anti-virus detection.

Also, by accident I may have done something that others have now tried intentionally and found that they've had success with it.

Disable audevicemgr.exe from loading at startup. That executable loads about eight (or so) drivers when the computer boots. Despite not having those drivers loaded, the update does seem to work. In some cases, it seems to work better.

The upgrade does put the DEMO back on the application list - but without an uninstall.... not too nice.

It's in your phone's C drive under systems\apps\demo. Deleted the Demo folder and the DEMO icon is gone.

Interesting. After the upgrade, I *did* have the DEMO under uninstall. Clicked and BINGO, gone! Might have something to do with whether or not the file is in use -- or other files in use -- or -- hey -- what do I know!

SEUS has failed on three computers with the following message:
Quote:
Many users are using Sony Ericsson Update Service right now.
Please try again later!

I've tried this for a full day with no sucess whatsoever.

I'm convinced this isn't, and probably never has been, a server load related problem.

Looking at the Java Console log, I see the following final lines before the error:

Quote:
Try URL: http://homeflash.ericsson.net/servl...on=getSessionId
ServletStream opened
Got result from servlet opend
Fetched session ID :NoSessionIdAvailable
Got session id=NoSessionIdAvailable
No resource found

It looks to me like their applet got an unexpected result when it executed a servlet.

This is either happening because the service is broken/down or because there is something about my version of Java or my network setup that is breaking their updater.

Has anyone successfully updated in the past day? If so, then I think the problem is on my end.

Greg.

No one ever replied to my post about whether the self upgrade also updates the phone portion f/w?

Not too much sence in just upgrading the pda f/w.

Posted by: BVH

My phone f/w went from R3A024 to R3C006. My house is in a marginal coverage area and I believe my skips/drops have been reduced by maybe 30% to 40%

All 4 f/w items were updated.

Hi guys, I just want to give you an update of my progress. After my long but successful update yesterday, I found that my phone was still the R3A version. So I took my phone to a retailer to have it professionally flashed to the R3C version, but then I find that it was only CDA:162003/8 R2A10. So again this morning I went through the whole update and restore process AGAIN! And now my phone reads CDA:162003/8 R2C01. I think I should have the most updated version now, please let me know if I'm wrong. Finally sorry to tell you guys that after all this work, the caller id function of the HBH-200 still wouldn't work with my P900.

As I've said, I do get the new R3C version after the professional flashed. Everything stayed the same except the CDA part after the f/w update from the SE site.

have uninstalled the PC Suite and reinstalled the software and tried to update the firmware and am still getting the error that states that I have more than one syncstation hooked up

any ideas how to resolve this continuing issue

thank you!

Posted by: LarryH

I have no idea what the problem might be so I'm just taking a stab here. Is it possible that you've used more than one USB port since owning the phone? The settings might be different each time you plug the phone into a different port. Also, do you have any Bluetooth software installed which creates virtual COM ports for "serial" communiation with the phone?

Just a couple of things to look at.

The place that you recommended, I think Bongo? Nice people there, thanks for the recommendation!!

yes do have bluetooth ports but I disconnected the bluetooth adapter when trying the firmware update but still get the same error about having more than one syncstation connected

checked the device manager and it only shows one syncstation installed

try removing the hardware too, before uninstalling the software.

by removing, I mean under the system folder/device manager of of your control panel, look for the DSS-20 (or DSS-25 as the case may be). It should be under ports. Uninstall it and then disconnect the actual hardware.

Posted by: D4SSWME

yes did uninstall the hardware too and reinstalled the PC Suite software but same scenario "more than one syncstation connected to the computer" error

bummer... any other USB devices attached? All I could think of right now is try it on another computer.

Posted by: jpjolo

Oh I remember there's a startup program audevicemgr.exe. Maybe that's causing the problem .... LarryH posted the stuff below.

If not, there might be other programs running in the background using a com port (I know it's supposed to be USB but this is how SE wrote their driver for the cradle).

Check which com port your cradle is using under device manager (note if it's an odd or even com port). Then check if there are other devices on any com port. If your cradle is on an odd com port and another device is also on another odd com port, disconnect that device. Do the same check for even com ports if your cradle is on an even com port.

My experience with the home flash site was that IE6 could not get the job done. I downloaded Netscape7, however, and installed my new firmware with no problems. My suggestion for those who continue to experience difficulties but haven't tried a different browser is to download Netscape 7 and use it. It worked!!

Good advice to be sure, but FWIW, I used IE6 and it worked just fine. I suspect it is not just the browser; it also depends what else is or isn't on the user's computer. Perhaps the NS7 install includes Java VM or whatever files needed, and IE6 doesn't (because of the Sun vs. M$ wars), so unless the user has those files for some other reason (I installed the Sun Java VM for other reasons previously), IE6 may not work. Just a guess of course.

That's interesting. In my case Nestcape 7 didn't work either.

At some point I rebooted my system, and the next attempt to update (using IE6) worked. Looking at the java console, it's clear that the client was able to get a session id.

One theory I have is that once the client-side Java applet that kicks off the upgrade encounters a problem, it's permanently broken until a reboot or until the VM gets loaded in a new process. In cases where people are having luck disabling drivers, it actually be the reboot (and not the disabling of drivers) that gets the process going.

In any case, it's clear that there are at least a few bugs that need to get worked out. I'm also convinced that the error message that indicates that the system is too busy is a generic error and that the problems aren't server load related.

Now that I'm updated, I'm a happy camper and I don't plan on fooling around with it again until the next firmware release.

And, off topic for a sec, I'll say that I'm having a blast with this phone. The last Psion technology I owned was a 3a which I stopped using probably 8 years ago. Things have come a long way...

Greg.

did it last night without a hitch

Posted by: Bengalboy

Well, when I installed Netscape 7 it gave me the option to install either Java or Winamp and I chose Java,,,so sounds like you guys have isolated the problem.

May I have a cup of Java whilst I flash my phone??

Posted by: LarryH

Mark -- if you look at the post above -- the CDA shows: CDA162003/8 R2C01. Some of us got 162003/3 R2A10. I'm wondering if it depends on what you started with or if there are even newer updates since the site went online.

What did you end up with?

Posted by: Bengalboy

Same as Rex......

Phone: CXC162022 R3C006
Bluetooth: CXC12529 R5D
Organizer: CXC162021 R2B02
CDA: CDA162003/8 R2C01

Posted by: Genghis Khent

My CDA is the same as Larry H: 162003/3 R2A10. Wonder if it matters, as long as the other three are current. Hard for me to know, since PMI, but I don't know what a CDA even is.

Also PMI, but how are you guys doing your screenshots of the P900?

I just get to 4% update and it stops!

Some connection error but I don't know what

I'm not so sure...! 'Cause I tried to update earlier tonight and like som many others, the update stopped at 4%. I took the phone out of the cradle, started it up, shut it down, put it back in the cradle. Never once did I reboot the computer! Tried it againm and it worked!! Now I have the latest software!

The things I've noticed that changed:
Bigger clock in powersave mode
Better T9
Better RF
The videocam picture dosen't lag when moving around
The little border aound the picture in the picture-viewing application has changed from white to blue (i'm using the blue theme)

Ohh, and i've go CDA162003/1 R2C01 - what does CDA mean?

Posted by: ukinny

Ok, so I have updated (always good to be au fait with the latest). Now, what did I get for my update? Anybody know?

Posted by: Genghis Khent

I went to the update site and out of desperation read the instructions. It appears from the instructions that while you enter the CDA number, the number that determines if you are up to date is the organizer number, which is R2B02 on mine and apparently everyone else who updates.

I still have no clue of course what CDA stands for or why we have different versions of it or what difference if any that makes.

I also still have no clue how you guys are doing your screenshots of the P900?

had to use the wifee's computer as I kept getting an error message in my computer stating more than one syncstation connected.

took practically an hour for everything including backing up and restoring data aside from the update itself.

I think it depends on what phone version you got, and SE just updated your CDA to R2A or R2C accordingly. Since your phone only started with an older version, so they can only update your phone to R2A. Just a wild guess, correct me if I'm wrong.

Can someone verify if they can get the HBH-200 to work with the P900 after their f/w upgrade?

So if I understand your reply correctly, if I ran the FW update program again, the CDA would be updated to the newest version? Or am I missing something?

So I took my phone to a retailer to have it professionally flashed to the R3C version, but then I find that it was only CDA:162003/8 R2A10. So again this morning I went through the whole update and restore process AGAIN! And now my phone reads CDA:162003/8 R2C01. I think I should have the most updated version now, please let me know if I'm wrong. Finally sorry to tell you guys that after all this work, the caller id function of the HBH-200 still wouldn't work with my P900.

That's what I did on last Thursday.
I think you need to get your phone flashed to the R3C version, then get the f/w upgrade from the SE site. After that you should be able to get R2C01. No use to do the f/w again now. I tried already.

After I did my upgrade, then restore, my HBH-200 was back on the Bluetooth list, working fine. AND, it now displays caller ID for incoming.

I'm glad that you managed to get updated. Those of us that ran into the "Too many users" message never even got to the point where the client-side app that downloads the update launched.

I think the problem that causes downloads to stop at 4% is a different beast altogether.

I suppose the good news is that most of us seem to be getting the upgrade to work one way or another. It's great that Sony Ericsson is giving this user-managed update model a try.

Greg.

My experience was the same. The second update updated the CDA to R2C01.

Posted by: Cheech

Finally got my P900 to update. Now to cut a long story short, I had a problem where the update stalled at 4% no matter what I did to my phone or XP pro PC. Lucky I have another PC which runs ME so after installing all the stuff like drivers, PC suite etc.. I tried again. First time the SEUS app. downloaded but said it couldn't match the key Then I used the Homeflash.net site and after some time (half of the Matrix Revolutions DVD) it was done.

Worked great even though I had the PC on WiFi. Now apart from a new screensaver & golf mp4 it seems just the same but as i'm now restoring my backup I will explore more later on.

Well until the next update, i'm a happy chappie.

How do I flash the phone fw as well?

This just goes to prove one of my favorite anti-motivational sayings: "Persistence may pay off after time, but procrastination pays off immediately!" However, it would go against the grain in this group not to try to be the first! Alls well that ends well.

Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson Customer Care Centre.

In regards to your question,i am afraid to tell you that at the moment are sony ericsson service centres do not support

So it appears theres nothing we can do for the moment although i am going to be contacting orange and see if something can be done.

um, that's good to know. will give it a spin later to see if it will work on mine. been trying since last saturday to flash the bugger.

CDA162003/5 of mine absolutely refused to flash, with the warning message that the operator didn't approve. wait, is this the "operator device" issue that you are referring to? errr...

and i just spent so much money on my P900!

booger, just tried it. still having the operator disallowing use of this service message. this just plain sucks.

nateblonde, how did you find out that SE has tackled this issue? were you facing the same problem too?

does anybody know what the Java applet looks for in the phone, to qualify it for a f/w update? perhaps there's a workaround to this.

can anybody shed any light on this matter?

actually, how does the update program know whether the phone attempting to update is actually on a list of allowed devices? i don't know about this but i think some information will be sent back to the server. i can't recall, but is there a privacy policy displayed on the SEUS site? won't the update program requrie information such as handset IMEI and network service provider?

mate,

the CDA is stored in a .txt file located in the systems folder so it's an easy hack/workaround. somehow i doubt it's just as easy as the CDA. the IMEI perhaps? S-E does keeps a database of IMEIs corresponding with specific regions, IIANM.

Posted by: rickpaul

The IMEI does determine what general group of firmwares are allowed on your phone, but there are other identifiers that determine what exact firmwares you are allowed to have.

please elaborate on the other possible identifiers. might be interesting and perhaps useful to know.

on another note, will be dropping by an S-E service centre this weekend to have the damn thing flashed to a generic f/w. no more "Your operator does not approve the usage of this service for this device." shite. wish me luck, my fingers are crossed.

I remember seeing something about the faster the Internet connection, the better chances of having a trouble-free firmware upgrade. While this is not specifically on the topic of the firmware upgrade - I just upgraded from a dsl service guaranteed @ .384 MB min. to 1.5 MB maximum download and guaranteed .128MB upload package to a guaranteed 1.5MB minimum to 6 MB maximum download and guaranteed .384 upload package. With the old package, I always had a sustained download speed of about 1 MB every 7 seconds. With the new package, I was able to download PC Suite in 70 seconds! Thats about 1MB every 2 seconds! This is great! I've never seen progress bars fly from one end to the other. This speed will increase slightly when I am able to hook in the new dsl modem which, for about 10 days, goes thru an optimization routine with SBC's switches. (SBC forgot to make a setting change on their end so i was not able to use the new modem yet) For anyone interested, the new service is costing $99.00 a month from SBC.

I've left my phone overnight to install the latest firmware and to my horror the laptop turned itself off this morning. But the phone prompt me to reset the country and langauge and all the settings have disappeared, i.e everything back to default. I also notice the screensaver clock is bigger.

When i check the CDA number, it still says R2C01 whereas the latest should be R2B01. Has my phone been updated? What else do i need to do?

Excuse me for being rude but how can R2B be the latest over R2C? The letter C comes after the letter B in my alphabet.

The latest CDA is R2C.

Guys

It's ok, you're not being rude at all. The version i quoted was taken from the sonyericsson website after i typed in my CDA number. it says the latest version is for 162003/5 is CDA R2B 02. I now have R2C 01 on the phone.

can i just disregard that?

Yes I think you can disregard it. For the CDA 162003/5 - R2B probably was the latest. My CDA is 162003/8 with R2C01.

Posted by: rickpaul

Carmovies:

The CDA does not determine your firmware level at all. The CDA is a customization file. Depending on where your phone was provisioned, and which Language Pack you have, the CDA may vary. One person can have the latest version of firmware with R4Q CDA while someone else has the latest version with R1C CDA.

SE probably updates the CDA with each upgrade. That way it can ask you which CDA you have, and determine whether you need an upgrade or not. It is probably not a very accurate measure from what I have been reading.

The CDA is the Carrier customizations. With generic phones, there are generic customizations. These would be the pictures, sounds, movies, themes, and settings preprogrammed onto the phone.

The only thing you should worry about is the Organizer, Bluetooth, and Phone. The organizer has determined the firmware revision on the P800.

Also, one word of advice. Sony Ericsson says you can do a backup before the firmware upgrade and restore afterwards. This has been incorrect information in the past. This may overwrite some important system files. They said the same thing about the P800. You may miss some new features of the new upgrade by restoring from an old backup. You may want to refrain from this practice when the organizer jumps a number in revision. Of course, with the new updater, you just would need to update again to get those features back

Regards,
Rick Paul

The latest CDA is R2C.

Thanks for clarifying Rickpaul.

"Also, one word of advice. Sony Ericsson says you can do a backup before the firmware upgrade and restore afterwards. This has always been incorrect information. This may overwrite some important system files. They said the same thing about the P800. You may miss some new features of the new upgrade by restoring from an old backup. You may want to refrain from this practice when the organizer jumps a number in revision. Of course, with the new updater, you just would need to update again to get those features back "

So can I safely assume that this is the reason that some of us are only getting the CDA numbers updated while the other 3 remain unchanged after an update?

I know that overwriting the CDA version occured when backing up after a firmware upgrade on the P800, however, it did not overwrite the upgrade itself, just the name of the version. Also, I backed up my P900 and flashed it, then backed it up and the CDA version was not altered. So,,,apparently Sony/Ericsson has rectified this little glitch with the P900

When people who upgraded with the US language pack were able to Select MP3's while in phone mode on R2. When they restored a backup from R1, they would lose the ability to select MP3's in phone mode.

The CDA text file was not the only file that was overwritten. There were a few other system files that reverted.

There were also quite a few customers who noted their P800's crashing a lot after doing the restore. I do not know if it affected the UK pack, but it did definately affect the US english pack.

bengalboy

sorry for me being so naive and confused but is that the correct process to update the firmware and what do you back up and were to???
ive never done anything like this before?!

Darkmark, you should install the P900 PC Suite Software and backup your P900. After backing it up, flash it on the homeflash site. After you upgrade the firmware, you will open the PC Suite again and then do a restore of the P900 backup file. This will replace all of the previous settings, software applications, photos, MP3's, etc. that you previously had on your P900. The only thing you will have to manually replace will be voicetags for your contacts.

Ohh, and i've go CDA162003/1 R2C01 - what does CDA mean? [/B]

On the Better RF, I'd like to know how you came across that . No offence but I think that it may just be some "wishful thinking" In my experiences from the firmware upgrade, there has been no real tangible/audible change in RF performance. The weak spots are still the weak spots pre-upgrade vs. post-upgrade. Now if I were to use a Nokia 6600 in that same weak spot, THAT would be a tangible difference in RF performace. It'd be a shame to proliferate a wishful thinking rumor when it's not the case. Again, I may be wrong, but I don't believe that a firmware upgrade can affect RF performance in any significance. I think that would be in the realm of hardware.

I agree.... Don't forget it's the fall/winter season and there's no leaves on the trees. GSM Signal is better in this condition. Less moisture-laden barriers to attenuate signals.

The only way to measure RF performance is with the tools the communications engineers use.

Okay, I guess I should refrase that.. Better RF according to the signal strength thingy in the phone!

ok cheers and sorry for being so unsure on the issue, but if i am going to upgrade tomorow will i till need to back up if i hav not entered any info on the phone?

does the back up just back up personal info on the handset such as images mp3s etc???

thanks

dm:evileye:

Posted by: carsmovies

You only need to back-up your personal information, pic's, mp3's, etc. and settings and you really don't have to back-up all that either so long as you store them on the external memory (memory stick). The only thing you will loose is the settings and entered information like your phones phonebook, meetings, etc.

It's a good idea to put all programs, pic's etc on the external memory anyways.
