P900 Firmware Upgrade Here!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Bengalboy

Yes, flashing the firmware will delete all settings. Restoring a backup to your phone after a firmware upgrade prevents you from having to go back and manually input all the information again.

For anyone with an o2 UK supplied P900, here is some information which I hope will be helpful.

I recently obtained a P900 on o2 in the UK. This was via their excellent deal which allows you to get the phone for free.

Almost immediately, I noticed that the firmware was much older than others were reporting on these forums. In my case, the versions were:

Phone: R3A10
BT: R5D
Org: R1A05
CDA: 162004/7 R2B01

When I tried to update using the online service, then it simply wouldn't let me, as it claimed I had the latest firmware supported by my operator.

Well, I've now managed to circumvent this problem.

I took the phone along to my local service centre, and asked them to flash the latest firmware. According to the SE central server, the latest versions for the EMEA P900 were:

Phone: R3B01
BT: R5D
Org: R1B01
CDA: R2C01

I questioned this, and the chap forced an update to the EMMA system (I guess this is the service centre software), and it still said that these were the latest versions on offer).

We then flashed the phone, and lo and behold, all o2 customisations were gone, and the CDA had changed to 162003/5.

My P900 now looks like a completely vanilla unit. Totally standard, with no network customisations at all.

I reran the online update, and have now updated to:

Phone: R3C006
BT: R5D
Org: R2B02
CDA: 162003/5 R2C01

So, all you UK o2 users, get your unit flashed at a service centre, and then you will be able to perform online updates whenever you like.

Bagpuss.

My CDA reads 162003/8 R2C01 instead of 162003/5 R2C01, is there any difference?

See Rickpaul's post about CDA:

Carmovies:

The CDA does not determine your firmware level at all. The CDA is a customization file. Depending on where your phone was provisioned, and which Language Pack you have, the CDA may vary. One person can have the latest version of firmware with R4Q CDA while someone else has the latest version with R1C CDA.

SE probably updates the CDA with each upgrade. That way it can ask you which CDA you have, and determine whether you need an upgrade or not. It is probably not a very accurate measure from what I have been reading.

The CDA is the Carrier customizations. With generic phones, there are generic customizations. These would be the pictures, sounds, movies, themes, and settings preprogrammed onto the phone.

The only thing you should worry about is the Organizer, Bluetooth, and Phone. The organizer has determined the firmware revision on the P800.

Also, one word of advice. Sony Ericsson says you can do a backup before the firmware upgrade and restore afterwards. This has been incorrect information in the past. This may overwrite some important system files. They said the same thing about the P800. You may miss some new features of the new upgrade by restoring from an old backup. You may want to refrain from this practice when the organizer jumps a number in revision. Of course, with the new updater, you just would need to update again to get those features back

Regards,
Rick Paul

darkmark:

I am using manual update. Simply typing in the CDA number.

From my attempts to update my P900 when it was running original o2 firmware, it doesn't seem to matter if you choose manual or automatic. The updater software re-checks the phone to make sure the CDA you typed is the CDA stored on the phone.

Regardless of what you typed in, it will always believe the CDA in the phone, and act accordingly.

Although the CDA doesn't determine the firmware level that you have, it is being used to check/prevent you from running anything but the firmware that your network operator has currently certified. In the case of o2 in the UK, this prevents us from going beyond R1Axx firmware versions (organiser).

I guess this is a sensible practice if you have a phone that carries specific network customisations. Personally, I couldn't care less about the o2 stuff, as I am using the P900 on Vodafone. This is the reason I had my firmware flashed at the service centre.

I've got a UK Orange p900

When I went to update it said i had the most up to date version, however i flashed it anyway and it was successful (read earlier of problems flashing with Orange but I was ok)

I have an HBH-200 headset and I one of the reasons I want the most up-to-date version is for the ability to get all the features of the hbh-200 working. The problem is, they still dont work.

Do I need to do anything extra here?

Posted by: Ido_al

I have a problem with the Online-Update:
I got to the "Download and install the client application" screen/web page, and after installing the client application, nothing happens - the web page do not "automatically updated" to the new web page, as I had been told at the site.

I had been installing the application twice and refreshed the site/begun the update again - buy nothing happend...

I choosed the "Automatical verification mode" and I'm using a Dial-Up connection - 56Kbps (not broadband connection).
what do I need to do???

Thanx!
Ido.

If any of you still find it difficult complete the update, here are few points to consider.

•First of, Sonyericsson have made the update utilities (including the update application and the web pages) using Java applets.

•If your PC’s powered by Win XP and also have installed SP1 or SP1a, on it, you may find it difficult to finish P900 update.

•Also if you’re a user of internet explorer 6.0 and or IE 6 SP1 installed, you will definitely face this problem.

•The secret is Microsoft had conveniently eliminated the generic support SUN Microsystems JAVA applets. Also they have successfully deleted “Window virtual machine” in Win XP SP1a.

•To make P900 update a success, go to www.java.com and download and install newest Java engine 2.0. It may take half to one hour to complete the java installation depending on your connection speed.

•Once you’re finish installing Java, restart the PC and begin the P900 update as you did before.

•Make sure to backup your phone content (using SE backup/restore utility) and follow the online update instructions up to the last letter. I am sure you’ll be happy.

•Following is my P900 specs before and after the update.

Before

PDA Version: CXC162021 R1B01
Phone SW Version: CXC162022 R3B004
BT SW Version: CXC12529 R5D
CDA Version: CDA16003/5 R1A04

After (01-14-2003)

PDA Version: CXC162021 R2B02
Phone SW Version: CXC162022 R3C006
BT SW Version: CXC12529 R5D – (No change)
CDA Version: CDA16003/5 R2C01

Good Luck!

Ayomasha

Couldn't get the update to work with IE, but Netscape seemed to work like a charm... although now everything is in CHINESE.

Grrrr... Anyone know how to get the FULL English version onto this P900? I'm stuck with Traditional Chinese T9, Chinese Keyboard, and Chinese symbols mixed in with my English Menus.... it's irking I tell ya. The unit itself is still very usable... but it just bothers the hell outta me.

PMI, but R3A06 relates to which, PDA or Phone SW? If the latter, isn't R3C006 more advanced?

Have just updated my P900 with the new release which is as follows :-

Bluetooth: CXC12529 R5D

Organiser: CXC162021 R3A06

CDA: CDA162003/3 R3B01

Mine (not updated recently) is the same as yours except my organizer is R2B02 (presumably older) and my CDA, whose number like yours is 162003/3, is R2C01 (presumably newer).

The air has been heavy in Studio City. R2C01 is *newer* than R3B01? I'm working on this.

Sorry neighbor. Wonder what my morning coffee had in it?

OK, this update is newer on the organizer and CDA. What difference it all makes remains to be seen.

There is another thread on this issue now also.

Oh and can I have what you're drinking?

This new update seems to have broken Mac iSync. I can no longer sync my P900 with my Mac!

BTW, does anyone know what's in this release?

You may have gotten one of the grey market P900's. One of the ones allocated for China. They have no international warranty.

iappologize if i am not up to date in this thread.

The R stands for revision so 1-2-3 etc... is the sequence of updates for the specific system firmware.

Still to find any new features although i'd imagine Bluetooth problems could have been fixed.

Posted by: BVH

Update worked perfect the first time. Actual file download took less than a minute, update thru reboot took another 21 minutes - 22 minutes total. Acceptable!

My experience was similar to BVH. No problems. However, not sure what the benefit of the FW upgrade was either. My ex was still able to get through on my cellphone so that bug hasn't been resolved yet

Do what I do and assign the Ex a ringtone like the Imperial March from Star Wars that way you know if you want to answer or not

The P900's included 'Suspense' ringtone serves well for this purpose as well.

Wonderful suggestion Thanks to you (and Phnarr). Or perhaps there is a sound file for tht country song "I still miss my ex -- but my aim is getting better."

Anyway, that problem solved! Now I wonder what improvements if any came of the firmware upgrade.

Posted by: BigFeat

I tried to sift through a lot of blah blah in this thread to find out if members have been confused about firmware revisions. Anywho, the pic below should clarify things. If it don’t match then you don’t got it.

I notice a MUCH BETTER RF. I usually get 2 maybe 3 bars. Tonite I had a STEADY 4!! Unheard of here! I also noticed there is a pull down menu to adjust the internet and messaging settings right from the message screen!! SWEET!!

Those are just 2 I picked up on immediately.

Firmware is just like a version of a computer. E.g. ME, 2000 ......

Posted by: rickpaul

Your firmware is a carrier customized firmware. You will need to wait until the carrier approves the firmware before it becomes available to you.

You may need to send in your phone for a firmware upgrade in order to upgrade it. We can also uncustomize it so that you will be able to use the SEUS in the future as soon as firmware upgrades are available.

For CDA162003/2, the latest organiser version is R4A06. Now you need to compare this version number with the one in your phone.

Bluetooth SW Ver: CXC12529 R5D to R5D (No change)

Sorry for the change in subject guys but I have a quick question.

I went in the sonyericsson.com website and I downloaded one of the Language packs they have there for the P900.

The language backs say "These packs are intended for the P900 Organizer version bla bla ..

they have several of them for different organizer versions.

They did not include my version, maybe because my P900 came directly from hong kong.

I downloaded one of the packs anyways and intalled American English in my P900. It worked without any problems.

My question is, why did it work if it was a different organizer software? and now that it worked, am I going to have any kind of problem in the future for doing that? or am I ok now that it works?

Posted by: LarryH

Kuhne, that depends. Do you have the US English calendar bug?

Posted by: L Bo

For some reason for the last 2 days, I keep getting an error saying that SE cant communicate with my device. Seems more like a SE problem then mine. Anyone else?

Nobody likes replies like, "SEARCH" but, for those of us who spend a lot of time on these boards, it's just etiquette. HoFo is a helpful place (generally) but try to help that out and search before you start yelling.

Vinlpp I had this exact problem when trying to update my P900. On my home PC I'm running Windows XP SP 1 and IE 6. The screen just stopped at the "checking installing" message.

I suspected from reading previous posts that this was a Java related problem with XP, despite having downloaded the latest Java patch.

I simply downloaded the Opera browser (with Java), and the update ran fine when I tried it through Opera. Hope this helps.

I have just spent an hour getting the runaround between Orange and SE about firmware updates for an Orange branded P900. Initially the update service says the phone is locked to Orange. My local SE Service Centre said they could only be done on-line and sent me to Orange. Orange said they new nothing about this and told me to go to my nearest SE Service Centre. I felt like I was disappearing up my own ****!!
I then asked to speak to the technical department who would ring me back so I could explain the situation (obviously knowing more than them on the subject). The CS rep then rang me back and said she had spoke to SE directly and this was the routine to be followed:- send your phone (after ringing them) by Special/Recorded Delivery to Celestica (Telford) Ltd, PO Box 80, Oakengate, Telford, Shrops, TF2 9WT. Tel 01952 230402.
You should remove the SIM, battery, back cover, stylus and put the following information in:- address, tel number, Mobile number and it would then take up to 7-10 days to do it.
Question - Does one sometimes regret buying an Orange branded P900? Answers on a postcard to .........
Perhaps I ought to tell my local Orange shop as well as they knew absolutely nothing.

Doug

Posted by: reworker7

dougproctor,

I too have a UK Orange contract P900, approx. 6 weeks old. I thought that I would not be able to use the SE update service due to the Orange custom flashing, but after changing from IE6 to Opera, the firmware was updated without problem.

For the record:

PHONE: CXC162022 R3C006

BLUETOOTH: CXC12529 R5D

ORGANISER: CXC162021 R2C01

CDA: CDA162004/3 R4A01

It was a CSR in data services who himself owned a P900 who told me that this should work. Hope this helps.

Monstar, PC Suite works with Outlook which is what I am using and will synch contacts, calander, etc. At least it works somewhat...

MidNight, glad to hear Netscape solved your problem as well. There should really be a simple way to avoid this problem with IE6,,,,why do some people have no problem using it while others do??? Regardless, as long as Netscape is working I suppose it doesn't matter.

Posted by: dougproctor

Reworker,
Thanks for that, I've just checked with Celestica and the latest one they have is R3C006 which is what yours is. So it obviously works. How does this Opera compare to IE6 then as a browser?
Again, it shows who you talk to as to what information you get? Everyone says something different!
Thanks

Hey guys,

I think my problem might be because I use the P800 cradle instead of the one that came with the P900. Has anybody tried to do a firmware update with the P800 cradle???

Cheers...

Posted by: rickpaul

The P800 cradle will work fine as long as it is a DSS-20. It will not work with the old DCU-11 cradle.

See the picture on the bottom of this page to tell if your p800 cradle is a DSS-20

Cheers.

Hi all,

I heard that in Singapore the phone firmware is now at R4A06. Is this correct? I am seeing that people who successfully update their phone through SE website has only R3C006.

Posted by: shrz

hey guys a little help please,
im unable to update because im being told my syncstation is being used by another app, nothing is being run, norton is off, tried ending the audevicemgr thingy in the end process tab, i have xp sp1a running using opera with java, does anyone know whats going on or had similar problems?

Posted by: rickpaul

I get that problem when there is another program in the background trying to access the USB port. Sometimes I would need to reboot to fix it.

Anyone successful flash with CDA162003/13? I keep getting the msg below

"There is currently no service for devices belonging to your operator

Your operator does not approve the usage of this service for this device."

Shouldn't happen cos I bought phone carrier & sim free.

Any advice/solution is greatly appreciated!

Posted by: ShovelhEd

Mine is doing the same thing...
I also noticed that when prompted, I downloaded the 1.15 version of the update tool, yet when the tool starts it says v 1.13.. what gives?

Posted by: L Bo

I've just completed the upgrade. I'll post any changes I notice in a few days....hopefully.

Posted by: BigFeat

Well doesn't the release notes already indicate what those changes are? Nonetheless, it is very subtle... Either way, only non-carrier modified phones can get this latest Organiser via the Online Updater.

Latest P900 Update:

Posted by: L Bo

I'm having a VERY serious problem sending MMS messages! I dont like this particular upgrade!!

Posted by: qazwsx

Hey. I'm really confused. When I get to the SE p900 update thingy-ma-jig it goes to a page that says
"Please wait...Checking the installation of Sony Ericsson Update Service". And then nothing happens...

I had the same problem. Re-start the computer and try again. Finally worked after 2 days. Could be a SE problem.

BTW, I had to do a master reset to get my mail working again.

Posted by: cmc0

I have one question for you guys. Even though I have a P900, I still have R3B on my phone. The only reason I'm afraid to upgrade is because of the fact I don't want to have to deal with blurry thumbnails in the Picture program. Does anyone notice blurry thumbnails under picture preview?

Posted by: L Bo

No prob here.

Yar. Restarted it and stuff, and still doesn't work. Emailed SE and didnt get a reply. Emailed them again and nothing Oh well, thanks for the help. Will try to just do it @ an SE care centre...

p.s. no prob here either about the blurry image previews.

Sometimes taking the battery out for a bit helps.

Am having the same problem. Have a 100% sim&carrier free P900 and have successfully updated previous sw-versions to this phone a number of times. SEUS gives me the same error message which is absolutely incorrect. Mine is CDA162003/3, anybody knows what's going on..?

Got a reply from SE...said something about a firewall app thats affecting it. Don't have one though...so no idea what to do. Anyway thanks for everything

I manage to uninstall it after the upgrade. However, I can't seem to delete the preset themes. Just wanna check with those who have not done the upgrade, can those themes (classical, blue, red and white) be deleted??

Posted by: cmc0

I have one questions for you gus. Do any of you guys notice any RF improvements with R4A or R4B over say, R3B?

Seems to be the same as far as I can tell. But the first upgrade seemed to be the biggest improvement as far as RF is concerned.

Is it really worth the upgrade as ive just purchased a brand free P900 and it comes with R3C006 and i would like to know is the upgrade worth it,thanks

Enter your CDA and it should say if you need an upgrade. If you do then it should have release notes that state what have been fixed or added. Anything important, then get the upgrade.

try downloading sun java software l had the same problem after that it started working fine www.java.com

Posted by: indiglo

I think my P900 is now shot........I just received mine and went to do the update....everything is fine but everytime it the % meter hits 58 a message comes up and says "Error in communicating with the device" Then I hit ok then it says "Remove battery and then reinsert it" I do then it brings me back to the webpage and says this.

"Error in communication with the device
Make sure you have removed the battery and reinserted it. Then try to start the device.

If your device shows an error message or does not start at all, click Recovery Mode

If your device behaves normally, click Start over.

If the problem persists, please contact support."

I am going to call SE in the morning when they open but was wondering if anyone had any ideas first. I tried IE6 and Netscape 7.1....Same thing on both of them.

But now here is the real problem. When I go to turn my phone on it loads up and then just keeps on restarting over and over and over, just like the energizer bunny, and the only way it stops is to pull the battery out.

Any suggestions would be great.

It still does not work, this is absolutely ridicolous! I took out $800 for a P900 last December since I did not want ANY sim-lock or provider sw on it and I am absolutely sure I have a 100% 'clean' one... It keeps giving me the message that my provider does not allow the update...

Your phone should be provider free. Your CDA tells me that your phone is an unprovisioned European model: English, Dutch (NL), German (DE), French (FR).

Rick, what does unprovisioned mean? I did buy it from a reputable source in the Netherlands and I was able to update the software through SEUS three times before, so I don't know what is going on...

Posted by: rickpaul

Unprovisioned phones are generic uncustomized phones.

Carriers will have phones provisioned to them. They may choose whether the phone can be upgraded or not.

I dont know what is going on with your phone. You may wish to try it on another computer.

Posted by: Herr Bauhaus

Rick,

Thank you for the replies, the fact I have an unprovisioned phone should be a good thing for updating then... I guess I will just wait until the next FW comes out and try to do an update then. If it still does not work then, can I send over my phone to you so you can flash it to an unprovisioned DUTCH p900?? Thanks!

Posted by: rickpaul

yes

Posted by: Herr Bauhaus

RickPaul,

Since I did pay for an unbranded and unlocked P900, I might have a case to bring against the store in the Netherlands but I need to be sure of my case... Is there a way to determine for sure that I indeed have a previously branded and/or locked phone? I have attached my SUES log file below, or do you need other information?
I would truly appreciate your help!

There is the latest Version released for P900!

"For CDA162003/5, the latest organiser version is R5B02. Now you need to compare this version number with the one in your
phone."

Posted by: cmc0

Any improvements? RF perhaps? No release notes included with this update

Posted by: sdsviet

i checked the website and there's no release notes for it right now. but i'll check it out and update tonight and see wat's new

Posted by: remo74tg

I just updated, have'nt noticed anything new yet.
Actually I have two problems, one, I can't restore, when I try and restore it says "Device Busy" try later. Second problem, my phone shows Cingular Extend now, instead of just Cingular. Any ideas, should I try and update again.

Posted by: indiglo

Also available if your CDA is 162003/1.......Will do the update later on tonight.

Quick question - If I do a backup before the update, then update, then restore to get all my stuff back in do I lose the update stuff in the restore???? Thanks in advance

Are the reception bars or RF in general improved

Posted by: RWEckhoff

Sorry if this was mentioned or provided earlier - but -

ensure that you have disconnected the power source (I physically disconnect it from the unit) to the base station when you get to the "turn off unit and place is base station" step.

For some reason - when the power is applied the software gets out of whack.

If that does not do it for you - then I don't know what to tell you.

This has worked for me numerous times when getting the error you describe above.

HTH - Bob

Posted by: haritia

I just checked and for 162003/8 it says the latest is R4B03. wtf?

Posted by: indiglo

Well I would of posted any changes but once again my computer will not allow an update to get past the 8 min./58% mark. I will have to do it at my girlfriends house in the morning. Funny thing is we both run the same antivirus crap and I have to turn all that off just so I can sync my computer but on hers I dont have to turn nothing off and it syncs just fine and the update always goes through. *sigh* Will post any changes noticed tomorrow.

Good night all.

Remo I rebooted my comp and my phone and I reinserted the sim (not sure if that helps in anyway) but i still got the device busy error. Finally I went to service functions and formated the internal disk and now I dont get the error anymore. Doing a restore now will let you know how it goes

I did the same thing and it worked, but operator logo still shows Cingular Extend, I guess I could try and flash again.

@ cmc0

It could just be my imagination, but the signal seems to be a bit better now, it still jumps up and down like before.

Posted by: p408typeR

so did u guys find any improvements?

im wondering if i should update now, or later when i see more posts about this update, the new update doesnt look too good to me....

Posted by: oferlaor

nothing so far...

I went through all the screens and nada...

Posted by: iiiwabibitoiii

Mine is still at SE for repair. I hope they update my firmware for me.

Posted by: oferlaor

OUCH.

Looks like the new version messes things up completely for the contacts manager!!!

I seem to have lost some fields.

Personal ringtone link is lost (it just gets moved to the notes section).

There's no notes section anymore in the contact itself.

The contact image gets corrupted (it has a square overlaying it). Only recreating the contacts fixes things.

VERY VERY BAD RELEASE.

Posted by: p408typeR

so it looks like its not worth updating yet.....

since some ppl cant restore their fones yet.....

Posted by: indiglo

I could restore my phone just fine....I havent noticed any bugs or anything new.....Its just like I never updated.

Posted by: offsight

I updated phone fine but carn't seem to see whats new with it sept phone os seems tobe alittle faster by a tuch but testing everything elce it seems same

Posted by: iiiwabibitoiii

I wonder if this update will improve bluetooth support for headset like the HbH-200.

Posted by: fijbert

according to users of my-symbian
the upgrade is supposed to make the phone faster
but so far, everyone has had a problem with HBH-200, contacts getting messed up and other stuff

I am going to wait a bit

Yes, the phone is much faster especially in email and doc viewer (that even work better). Now the email app, after get&send close the GPRS connection automatically. Finally, all problems with my HBH-35 are solved! Good night!

Posted by: iiiwabibitoiii

Thanks for the respond. Still have to wait a few weeks to get my p900 back from se =(.

Posted by: offsight

I found out from when i updated that the battery seem to last even longer ?? anyone noticed this ?

Posted by: GAMIAS

Anybody has any idea when the language packs will come with this version? After updading, when I try to install languages I get a message that I need the language compatibility version. WTF is that?

Posted by: outlander

After updating, the storage manager doesn't show much each application occupies and how much there is space available. Could somebody else check this out?

Posted by: nick111

I have all info about memory application and space avalaible !

Maybe updating again ...

Posted by: remo74tg

Just wondering, is there a way to go back to the firmware I upgraded from, this new firmware has nothing but trouble, I seem to be dropping calls alot and I have wrong operator logo. I even flashed twice, but still have all the problems.

Posted by: Sul05

I've noticed a number on things with this release. The fisrt and best thing is the battery life has increased a lot . Just lasts longer and longer. There is a pause/play button for gifs. My hbh-65 works a lot beter with the phone now no crakling and connects all the time now unlike before. Haven't had anything go wrong like others with contacts messing up. Also the thumbnails load up really quickly now used to take a while on R4A. Thats all for now

Posted by: p408typeR

so do you guys think i should update now or may be just wait a lil later?

really doesnt look too good to me........!!

Posted by: offsight

What i found out on mine is 3 inproved updates from update and with no probs.

First 1. OS is faster but by a tad seems to load stuff up in ram faster too.

2. The battery now lasts even longer then befor as it use to drane fast on mine befor update as i run bluetooth all time and now from new update the battery lasts 25% longer.

3. Bluetooth now seems to pick up other bluetooth objecks just in 20m range which it never did befor. and i tested that with PC's with bluetooth and other phones and pda's Give it a test and see

PS. dont cover the bottom right of the p900 as thats where the bluetooth reads and sends from and if you cover it with your parm you will get a poor out put and input, but i bet you may already know this as i found out in march

Posted by: oferlaor

offsite,

Which side is the lower right side (below the Memory Stick Duo slot)?

Posted by: djs

I recently updated to R5B02 without any problems. The phone seems better and faster now, however, I am a TMobile customer and now my phone only displays Cingular. When I perform a network search TMobile is not found at all. Strange, but other than showing the wrong name, the phone works fine. I called Sony and TMobile and neither had any ideas why this would happen. Does anyone have any ideas or had this happen to them? Thanks.

Posted by: offsight

Yes - below the Memory Stick Duo slot, dont know why its there though

I have the same problem. =(

Posted by: djs

I just removed my sim card from my P900 and put it in my old T68 and realized that the T68 now says Cingular too??? I don't know what happened to the sim card when I updated my P900 to R5B02, but apparently it affected the sim card in some way and now it shows Cingular instead of TMobile in my other phone as well. Really strange.

Posted by: atong

i updated my firmware also and could not do a restore...a format internal disk thru the service menu made it work also, thanks for the tip.

Posted by: MartinG

After upgrading my P900, it doesn't show T-Mobile anymore, only Cingular. I'm also a T-Mobile customer.

Posted by: iiiwabibitoiii

Wirelessly posted (SonyEricssonP900/R102 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0 Rev/MR4)

i think the problem is that in some part of the country, AT&T and T-Mobile services are sitting on top of the cingular network. ie. southern california. I think this is the reason why the phone picks up the cingular name

Posted by: MartinG

True, but the problem is that it worked OK (showed T-Mobile) before the firmware upgrade but not after. T-Mobile is not available to select now. The phone works fine and service is normal on T-Mobile. It just won't display it on the phone.

hey, just want to ask about restoring.

the phone list on my PHONE and on the SIM are different, somehow im not able to modify the phone list on my SIM and..if i do a back up on the phone, and restore it back, will the phone list be restored too? or do i have to copy from sim and edit it one by one again? that would be a disaster if so.

thx

Can't use update on my P900. When initialising the phone it switches it self on then off again, but after that, it says error in communication with device then the message like this pops up in following page:-

Your device is not permitted to use this service
Your operator does not approve the usage of this service for this device.

We look forward to assist you again soon.

Thank you for using Sony Ericsson Update Service!

Can anyone help me out here please?

What is your CDA? It should also be on your IMEI label.

My cda number is CDA162004/29 R4A01

Phones issued with the CDA starting with "CDA162004" can not be upgraded until the provisioner (carrier) who issued the phones allows for the firmware upgrades. This could possibly be your problem. It could also be another issue...

Rick, I have CDA: 162003/5 Im on organizer version R3A06

Is this worth it for me? Will I be having any issues from it?

Does anyone know if it is possible to downgrade? I updated the firmware to r5 and iSync (macintosh) simply will not work. I now have an $800 brick that can make some phone calls. SE Tech Support has been spectacularly unhelpful, and rather than do the responsible thing and pull the buggy FW, it is still up there for unsuspecting rubes like us to download and beta-test for them.

I suspect we need to help them. On the Mac discussion groups at Apple, they have a pretty good suspicion that the problem is with the phone's mRouter. Do the engineers even look? Do they beta test this stuff before they post it?

Does anyone know someone in their development community? Can anyone hear help? Problems like this are serious and need to be addressed quickly. How a company responds to issues like this will make the difference between customer loyalty and abandonment. We need to encourage them not just to do teh technically expedient thing, but to do the right thing.

IN the meantime if there is a way to get R4 back on my phone I would be very grateful if someone could show me how. Thanks!

Posted by: rickpaul

You would need to send your phone in to get R4 installed. SE has been known to release buggy firmware. It is best to wait a couple of weeks after a firmware is released before you install it on your phone. This way you can hear other peoples feedback on how well the firmware works.

Posted by: rickpaul

The new firmware has a lot of bug fixes, but as you can see in the above post, it may not be worth switching to if you have a Mac.

Thanks Rick, I think I will hold up on it then.. I use it with my laptop and the Apple... Although I haven't gotten everything to work right with the Apple, it at least works with it.

Anybody else's phone who was on T-MOBILE now shows CINGULAR as the carrier when they apply the upgrade? Phone works OK, but cannot find the T-MOBILE network - I guess they use Cingular's backbone here in So Cal.....

Yes, same thing with me. Cingular now displayed but have T-Mobile service in So. Cal. This happened a long time ago with my P800 and a firmware upgrade fixed it.

I have CDA162003/5 and upgraded to the latest and not a single issue. All i noticed was it's a little more responsive.

I have a rule though, if your gonna do a firmware upgrade why o why do a restore. Always do it all from afresh. Hard reset, upgrade, install your apps again then get your contacts back on via a sync never restore.

Like somone said, if you change the oil on your car you dont put the old filter back do ya?

A firmware update changes things, restoring never really works.

I know it takes time but thats life, its never easy.

Updated mine since a week now. Have not noticed any significant improvement in speed. MMS now works without giving error messages all the time.

Battery life seems to have imporved a lot though.

This is my cda CDA162003/8.

Also getting you provider is not permitting you to use this service...

WTF????? Mines an OEM one! I didn't get it from any provider....

Posted by: rickpaul

Be sure that the CDA on your IMEI label matches. You may want to try using a different browser such as Mozilla or opera for your firmware upgrades if you are having problems with IE.

are if teh cda doesn't what does that mean?

i mean the imei sticker and teh phone cda are different

Posted by: rickpaul

The phone has a CDA printed on the sticker near the bottom right, if I am not mistaken. I was curious to what this CDA number states.
