Here's how I set up my Nokia 3650 to connect with my Palm Tungste E via their infrared ports: I think it should work with any IR enabled phone and any IR enabled Palm. The initialization string section is probably valid for only ATT however.

Setting up the modem on the Clie:

1. Tap on the Home icon, then select the Prefs icon.

2. From the drop down menu at the top right corner of the screen, select Connection. Then click on "New" and name your connection ATT via IR

3. In the Available Configurations field, select Connect to: "PC" (If that doesn't work after you try all this, select ("Local Network")
Then select Via: Infrared. Then click OK.

Setting up the network connection

1. From the drop down menu at the top right corner of the screen, select Network.

2. In the Service field, type AT&T GPRS .

3. Type the character "d" in the User name field. (without quotes).

4. Tap on the Password field, then type the character "d". (without quotes).

5. Tap OK to assign and save this password. (When you return to the Network screen, you will now see the Password field reflect –Assigned-)

6. Tap on the Details… button.

7. Select PPP as the Connection type .

8. Tick the boxes to Query DNS and obtain IP Address as Automatic.

9. Tap on the Script… button.

10. Tap on the arrow in the first line and select Send . Next to this, type atdt*99#.

11. Tap on the arrow on the next line and select Send CR .

12. Tap on the arrow on the next line and select End.

13. Tap OK, then tap OK again.

You're now ready to use this with your phone.

Setting up the Phone:

1. On the phone, press the Menu button.

2. Scroll down to Connectivity and press Options, then choose Open.

3. Scroll to highlight Modem (Not Infrared!) and press Options, then choose Open.

4. Scroll to highlight Connect via infrared, and press Options, then choose Open. This will activate the infrared in the handset and prepare it for use as a modem.

Making the connection:

1. Align the infrared port of the handset with the infrared port on the Palm device.

2. Return to the Network section of the Preferences.

3. Tap the arrow to select the Service, AT&T GPRS. Tap Connect to establish an active connection.

You will now be connected to the AT&T Wireless GPRS service. You will need a browser to view webpages and a mail client to access email. I've used Palm's WebPro, Eudora, Blazer, and PalmScape for browsing. I like WebPro best, but it's most expensive too. Search for one that's more to your liking.
