Can you use Sanyo 5500/VM4500 as modem for laptop?!

Yes, please excuse this elementary question, but I've done few searches and I still haven't found any definitive info if this is possible yet on the 4500. I don't doubt that it is possible, but I'ld like to know for sure before I go down to the Sprint Store today and pick one up. So if anyone can confirm this, I would be greatly appreciative. Furthermore, if you could explain how you did it, that would be even better. Would it be the same method used for the other Sanyo's etc? Also, do you have to use FutureDial's Snap Dialer software? Is there only a serial cable for the 4500 or can this also be done via usb? Anyway TIA...

You can use it as a modem. You have to get the USB cable and the best way to do it is to either use the Sprint Vision Dialer or Future Dial's Dialer. I've tried it on my 5500 and it works.

Yes you can, you do not need FutureDial's stuff, and the USB cable works fine. It was the same way as the Sanyo 5300.

i have never owned the 5300...so how do you do it with just the cable??

I use MacOS X and it recognizes the phone (5500 and 5300) when I plug it in, however it won't use the phone to connect unless I restart with the cable and phone plugged in. I don't know if you use Windows or a Mac, but there are threads on here somewhere that has step-by-step directions. Good luck!

Just to update the VM4500 works great as a modem using FutureDial's Snapdialer software! You just have to use the Sanyo 8100 usb drivers and your set!

Cheers!

All you need is to install the USB driver so that your machine can recognize your phone as a device. Then go to network properties and create a new connection as a dial-up connection.
No username or password needed as the Sprint network uses the info off the phone to authenticate.

For the phone number to connect it is #777 and NO password. Viola, CONNECTED. Works on the 8100 and should on all Sprint PCS phones....

michakaveli,
are you saying that all you need to get is the USB cable and the driver? If so, where can you get the driver (I have a 5500)? Thanks!

Also, to those that have been using their 5500 as a modem for their laptop.... what is your transfer rate been? Is it at least as fast as a 56K connection?

Thanks all.

Brian

Correct... I read somewhere that someone used the 8100 driver for the 5500.....

For clarification, is this driver one provided by Sanyo, Sprint, Microsoft, or FutureDial ?

Thanks,
Brian

probably any of those, but I use the futuredial one (and no, you don't need the software to get the driver).
