Will it be possible to upgrade the Mio 8380 Smartphone 2002 os to Smartphone 2003?

No it wont..

I really dont know why but i was told at a Orange press meeting that no phones could be upgraded from 2002 to 2003 !!

No, it's not possible to upgrade your Mio 8380 to smartphone 2003. However, Mio 8390 is going to be released at beginning of January, and it's smartphone 2003. Hopefully smartphone 2003 won't have too many problems like smartphone2002, but it's Microsoft, Microsoft = bugs~

I thought as much. Otherwise new smartphones won't sell right? I was sort of hoping it would be like upgrading the OS on a PC.

Nope, not at all and that's consistent with the PocketPC/Windows Mobile line. Microsoft does not sell or release these OSs or upgrades to the end consumer. They release them to the device manufacturer. As far as upgrades go, it's up to the device manufacturer to decide whether or not to offer it. There are generally device specific mods made to these OSs. And, for SmartPhones, it's up to the device manufacturer and service provider. The device may be technically able to take an upgrade (ie. the hardware/memory, etc. may well be able to support it) but if the manufacturer/service provider choose not to offer it you won't be able to upgrade - you can't use an upgrade for one device on another (well, not entirely true - some have worked but it's absolutely done at your own risk!)

I was reading one bestbuy.com and they say that mpx200 will be able to upgrade to ms win 2003 mobile version. I really think its possible to upgrade. its just like fashing your other OS phones with new patches and updates. and just the way you can upgrade you pocket pc to the new OS this will be the same way...I think ms isnt that dumb and it will let the end users upgrade to New OS...the only problem is that the new phones with 2003 OS will have some unique features that we wont...and the new mpx200 will have camera and blue tooth, so, they are not losing any thing by letting the end users upgrade to the new OS. they are basically gaining more income by selling the software...

The issue here is not whether or not the device is able to be upgraded technically. The issue is whether or not Motorola and/or the service providers will allow it. Just like PocketPC OS, you cannot get a PPC 2002 -> PPC 2003 upgrade from Microsoft - they do not release it to the end user. The Pocket OSs go only to the device manufacturers. It's up the manufacturer (and, in the case of SmartPhone, the service provider) to decide whether or not to offer the upgrade to the end customers. We don't know whether Moto will offer it or not. Personally, i would doubt it. It's well known that a replacement for MPX200 with 2003 OS is probably no more than a couple of months away, the vast majority of users will have no need to upgrade or even be aware that an upgrade is available. There also is a significant support cost involved. I've recently upgraded my Dell Axim - it wasn't error free. I don't agree with you regarding the income aspect - I think it will cost the manufacturers/providers far more to tweak the OS for their devices (which they all do), manufacture and release the update and support upgrading users than they will pick up in revenue. And as for MS being dumb, again, MS has no say in whether or not a "technically capable" device will have an upgrade offered for it - only the manufacturer/service providers make that decision.

Again, I have no idea whether or not Moto/Service Providers will offer an upgrade. But given that the newer device should be out in the next couple of months, I wouldn't recommend anyone purchasing the MPx200 at this point if they expect to be able to upgrade it - you may very will be disappointed.

My Samsung rep told me that the SPH-i600 is upgradeable and that there will be an OS update available in the second (3rd) quarter of 2004. He told me that Verizon would offer it in the stores via the technician.

TechnoGeek,

That's great news! Now let's just hope that Mitac follow suit with the Mio 8380.... hopefully.

Don't count on it. MiTac will want you to buy the 8390 instead. If they provide an upgrade it will only reduce their sales of new handsets, and potentially increase the support costs.

For the Samsung i600 the situation is different. Samsung is not going to release a successor to the i600, so they will want to milk as much money out of the i600 as they can. It is therefore in their interest (and Verizon's) to provide an upgrade to SP2003, as that will prolong the shelf life of the i600.

I was looking at the MS Smartphone developers web site. It seems to me that there is a big difference between version 2002 and 2003. This raises the question whether software written for 2002 will even work on 2003.

If a device is not upgradable, it would seem that there are hardware issues that might prevent OS upgrades.

Just like with the PocketPC OS 2002 -> 2003 upgrade, software correctly coded in 2002 will run on 2003.
