Nextel to Sprint phone # porting...HOW LONG?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: malice23

Hi all,
I just purchased my Sanyo VM4500 this Tuesday and Im still not able to use my new phone. The sales rep said it might take anywhere from 2hrs - 14 days to port my cel number to Sprint. I wanted to know If there are any previous Nextel owners who ported their number to Sprint...HOW LONG DID IT TAKE???
Thanks
~D

OK, I don't know how long it will take, but here's how you can find out. Go to www.sprintpcs.com - enter your number (including the area code), and your password (probably the last 4 digits of your SSN. You'll get something like this:

----
Status of your transfer: In progress
Estimated time to process: 0 days, 8 hours
from current date/time
Estimated date of completion: Friday, December 12, 2003
1:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time
----

That's the info for mine. I signed up on the 6th, and mine *should* (I hope, I hope) be working late tonight (Pacific Time). That's transfering from SBC, and I don't know yet if it will actually *happen* on time... But you can go to the site and torture yourself by checking the countdown timer, at least.

It's a cute phone, and the camera is fun, but I'm kinda looking forward to using it to *call* people.

Only 2 hours! I'm green with envy.

I just got off the phone with the rep who sold me the phone (was trying to order the printed (non-PDF) manual), and according to him, the times given on that site are pretty reliable.

Have fun with your new toy!

(Hey... Something is messed up about that time. 2 hours and 7:30 a.m. EST don't match up. In any case, it's not far off...)

Posted by: malice23

YEah.....yours has more estimated time to process but your time of completion is sooner than mine..weird..
Anyways, hopefully tomorrow we will both have our phones up and running.
Enjoy and happy holidays to everyone!!!

OK, so it's only an hour past my estimated porting deadline, but hey, I had to check and see if my cool new phone is working. It isn't.

Neither is my password for checking the estimated porting time. Turns out if you have two people/numbers on one account, there's still just one password, so if you change yours, be sure to tell your S.O. My new password doesn't work either, but I'm guessing that's just a propogating-through-their-system thing.

A tip, if you call to check: when you get into the part of their automated system where it asks you to "say" what you need, just hit 0 (zero) to get a real person. There are no options for "when will my phone number be ported over?"

Good: The wait times for each call were less than one minute (at about 11 p.m. PST), and the people were friendly and helpful.

Bad: The first one transferred me over to a closed office, which told me it was closed, then hung up on me, so I had to call back.

The second CSR told me that the porting time on the web site is "only an estimate", and his typical experience is that the number actually ports 24-48 hours after that time. (Of course the salesman at the store told me they are pretty much right on.) "But," he says, "it can take anywhere between 5 and 30 days." I'm transferring from SBC, and he said he didn't have any particular information on how well/not things are going with them.

I'm sure hoping his 24-48 hours guess is closer to reality. We'll see...

I notice that when my friends called my cel number, it went to Sprint message box. But I can still make calls on my Nextel but not recieve calls. (Rep said this is normal) But I couldnt make calls on my VM4500, it always gave me a message about Sprint Roaming. I called and they did verify that my account is up and running. The tech guided me to a few steps to get to a setting on the phone where I can change system numbers. There was a setting on the phone that was incorrect. After changing it to the proper #, my phone rang and I had 2 messages. Since then all is well.
The internet status seems to be down. If I were you, test your cel number and see where it goes. If it goes to Sprint but you cant make calls. You might have the same problem that I did. Call them and let them know, they will guild you to setup the proper phone number.

PS I can still make calls from my Nextel...I hope this stops tomorrow.

Hey, congratulations! And thanks for the info.

Mine is porting from a home land-line to a Sprint cellular, so it might be a bit different, but I'll keep what you said in mind.

Have fun!

I actually got them to connect a new number to my phone while my old # is being ported. That way I can use it to make and recieve calls. My scheduled time to be up any running was Saturday at 2:30....now its Sunday. Hopefully it won't say Monday when I check the next time....

Whenever I check I just get "In Progress" with no times or anything.
And I can't log in, I can just use the transfer status thingy.
This is day 3 so far...

It's hard having a phone and not being able to use it.
Like a kid looking at a present but cant touch it until christmas.

I'll get them on the horn tomorrow and see whats up.
Enjoy your phone....

I also ported from Nextel using an i95 to sprint with the vm4500 figuring it had everything my i95 had and much more being that it had ready link and speakerphone.

My nextel phone stopped working on teh port and to my surprise the sprint one didn't either then till i had to call the store i got it and the rep who sold it to me told me to do some *something code i wish i could remember and then told me to put in a phone # i dont know where he got it from it mgiht have been the store or something. i think it was just something he forgot to do in store either that or it was a trick way to get it workign right away but right after it was working incoming and outgoing.

Its been an ok phone and the signal is definately been better then nextel but the phone is flimsier though thinner smaller. and teh speakerphone isn't as good, i guess its that it is half duplex as opposed to full duplex like nextel phones from what iunderstand, that and i lose sound out of the earpiece randomly and comes out speaker during no0n speaker convo , which is very worrysome.

I was sick of nextel adn ****** signal and was disappointed with thier new phone though finally being 65k color the screen got smaller then the i95 instead of bigger so i gave up on them. Not thati've been totally happy with the vm4500 but its better then the i95 i guess and hopefully sprints new phone the toshiba 4050 has all the same features as sanyo vm4500 but with better and first 260k color 2.2' screen adn supposedly better spkrphn but still only half duplex supposedly.

I'm looking for opinion of other nextel and especially i95 users who have or looking to port and what phones are going to be best for us with the features we are used to and more.

I was looking at the ATT NEC 525 camera flip phone but i dont think it has speakerphon and it has a 4k outer display not 65k and if it does have speakerphone its prob not full dup unless it says. The Panasonic gx87 camera phone has full dup speakerphone but no color external display just a sub lcd. So i'm not sure what to do

At this point i'm waiting for the toshiba for sprint may be the closest to what i want/need i'm going to get for now.

But the port was amazing...

I told my rep that I needed to port the number this AM (around 10 am) and he told me to expect it to be done way before Jan. 5th. I was then browsing through this thread and thought it was cool that you could check on the progress. When I tried to log in, I couldn't find the "progress" info anywhere. Everything looked as if it was already done. So, gave my old cellphone number a call and behold, the Sprint phone rang.

MAXIMUM PORT TIME: 6 Hours.

WOW!

Go Go Go AT&T. Heard they were having a lot of problems porting numbers. Guess not anymore.

You ported from ATT to Sprint, why?

I recently ported from Nextel to Sprint for the better signal and phones but was trying to research all carriers respective phones and signal before my trial period is up. I originally went to sprint because it was the only camera flip phone with speakerphone and more then 4k color external display. ATT came the closest with the NEC 525 and Pana gx87 phones , The Pana has a full duplex spkrphone over the Sanyo vm4500 half duplex but i didtn know this till after the fact also the Pana phone has no color external display. The NEC flip camera phone has only only a 4k external display so i passed and not sure if its speaker is half or full but prob half as it doesnt' specify full like Pana specs.

Also the Sanyo vm4500 on Sprint has camcorder/video. Still I think both the NEC and Pana phones are good and i prefer them as a make over Sanyo and future offerings from both these makes for plus ATT's affililiation with DoCoMo in Japan which is the biggest and ahs best phones is a plus and i know they already share some phones although late and apps etc. Plus the nice thing about GSM is that you can get a japanese GSM phone with english in it like the amazing beautiful Sharp GX-22 flip camera phone with 260k color screen for use with ATT from what i understand and many have ordered that phone and used with ATT and other gsm providers including cingular. Also there is talk of an ATT Cingular which at first i blew off as 2 mediocre companies joining but I still think ATT is promising with their NEC and Pana phones and docomo affiliiation so aquiring another company and just getting bigger could only be better.

Of course with Sprint getting the first 260k color screen in america with the Toshiba 4050 that would save one the trouble and cost of importing a phone. So for now i'm on the fence leading towards Sprint for that reason, but i'm not that impressed with their exclusive with Sanyo or the Toshiba phones as its jointly made with crappy audiovox and i'd rather have NEC and Panasonic any day.

If ATT could keep up with Sprints phones blow for blow and get their Docomo phones sooner rather then 2yrs later and improve their signal then they could be a force to reckon with and i for one would switch their.

Matter of fact i dont know much about their signal or customer service or how good/bad mMode is or anything but if you are leaving ATT for Sprint something must not be that good. So again let me know and why you left them? Should I stay with Sprint and not go to ATT?

I have had AT&T since '97. I loved them even though they offered less minutes and charged more. They were the only carrier that could give a signal in the cadaver basement of our school. However, in the last year or so, their coverage has been getting worse and worse. It has to do with their transition to GSM from TDMA. While TDMA coverage is dropping, GSM coverage is growing at the break-neck speed of an inch per year. It was really bad for me. Now, sprint and cingular can get through our basement (which I call "THE TEST") and AT&T cannot. Plus, I was starting to get quite a few dropped calls with them.

I could care less about phones, bells-n-whistles, data packages, etc. If you can't get reception or hold a call for 2-3 hours, then what is the point? A phone must do that which it was originally designed to do, then and only then must it go on to the fru-fru.

Anyways, my life so far with sprint has been good. Calls are clear, signal is strong and my wife loves 'em (my AT&T phone used to drop her and only her a few years ago...it was funny, but I digress). However, hold times (which were never >5 min for me with AT&T) are pretty bad for customer service. I've made three calls and they have been 41 minutes (I hung up), 22 minutes ( I hung up), and 37 minutes (I got through and then the rep hung up after not being able to solve my problem).

So, I still have a problem (can't access vision), but porting went great and my phone does that which I need it to do the most.

How I started talking about all of this, I do not know. To answer your question, spend a day or two on the AT&T discussion forum and read what others have to say. There were hardly ANY complaints from '97-'02. Now, it seems to be every other thread.

Your call,

JT

Thanks for the info , i hadn't really looked at ATT boards much other then about the NEC 525 phone or something which i now found out it has no speakerphone so no way.

I wondered about their signal but thought it wsa just GSM. Interesting to hear it was TDMA which i dont know much about but i know sprint and verizon use CDMA and so does DoCoMo Japans leading celluarl provider with best phones and no Vodaphone the second best is switching to it.

I thought ATT was a good choice because of the NEC and Pana phones and prospective future offerings from those makes even though the current ones are nice but didnt' quite cut it for me compared to sprints best which are the best in america. Also the ability to import the Sharp gx-22 phone but that is costly adn trouble to unlock and setup for american gsm providers and i've mostly seen ppl doing it for cingular haven't heard any example of anyone using it for att and their experience, though i hear cingular and att are merging soon?

I think it really depends on your area and i hear ATT is good in NYC but not in Philadelphia area where i am. And especially with them still transitioning to gsm it doesnt' seem like a good time to go to ATT.

AS far as Sprints signal it has been amazing especially coming from nextel. And it has been as good or better then verizon, the only place i dont have signal is in interior buildings with no windows like department stores in which i pick up verizons signal which i pay $5/mo for that option but its worth guaranteeing that i always have signal where verizon does and so the Verizon ppl can't brag their signal is best. because there is places where i have more bars and yesterday we wehre at place where my fiance verizon phone had no signal couldn't call voicemail and I had almost full. So not only do i think Sprint is a close second in signal ithink it may be as good or better at times.

Plus with Sprint having the best phones the Sanyo vm4500 being the best in america right now and Toshiba 4050 for Sprint to be the new best any day now with 262k color screen which i thought was the first but supposedly the LGVX6000 has 262k color but my fiance has that and to me it is a crappy phone with no speakerphone and my vm4500 screen looks as good or better adn the Toshiba is going to be bigger screen(2.2") and supposedly looks miles better even then teh vm4500.

So for now i'm barring finding out m ore info on how to use Sprint phone on VErizon only because she is on it and our families and bunch of freinds so i can take advantage of free mobile to mobile I'm staying with Sprints phones (#1) and Sprint service (close and closing in #2)
