New P900 Experience

Hello All,

I recieved my P900 last week Saturday before a week long business trip. Since I originally purchased a P800 from Sony's site last year, and ended up returning it, I really didn't expect that much.

WOW !!! What a surprise. All reviews say there are minor changes, but the changes definitely make the unit more attractive. Great Job SONY !!

Since my unit came from Germany, I upgraded to the latest firmware from Sony's update site and set up all of my e-mail access, added HandyDay application, etc... I can honestly say that using this phone has saved me tons of time with e-mails and productivity issues for the week. I noticed that the RF is better than the P800 as well as overall design and feel. No squeeks or cheap plastic feel.

I will be selling my BlackBerry 7230 and saving $40/mo in service fees. Integration with Outlook was seamless.

A few gripes;
- Sync process is very slow compared to BB or PPC units
- Need a feature which can temporarily disable the touch screen for cleaning.
- Need a better case or ideally a plastic holster of some sort. While the Sony case supplied with the P900 is a vast improvement over the bag which was included with the P800, the missing link is the lack of a positive locking mechanism for the belt clip. I am not into the full leather Vaja style cases because they add bulk and take away from the styling of the phone.
- When loading a photo from the Memory Stick, it takes forever (if ever) to display. This could be something I am doing wrong but I have not had time to look into it yet.
- Camera quality for low level lighting shots is very poor. Can't really expect much based on the resolution. Maybe the next revision will include a 2+ MPix camera.

My firmware update and backup/restore process went flawlessly. Current revs are as follows;

- Phone: CXC162022 R3C006
- Bluetooth: CXC12529 R5D
- Organizer: CXC162021 R2B02
- CDA: CDA162003/3 R2C01

One problem I read was that folks were getting error messages from the Sony Update site when they entered their CDA numbers. The site asks for CDA ----------- The first time I mistakenly entered 162003/3 R2C01 and it came back saying that the phone can not be updated, contact your provider (or something like that) When I re-entered the CDA number, leaving off the R2C01 suffix, all went well.

So far I feel this one is a keeper. I am on T-Mo in the Midwest and have had no issues so far.

Later,

with regards to your question regarding disabling the tactile screen, just tap on the battery indicator. there should appear an option to lock the screen.

Hi,

Owned this phone about a month - and yes - I do like it - but having had a few 11 hr flights and time to play with it - I do have a few gripes others may want to be aware of:

(I hope I'm wrong, and if you know a workaround please let me know!)

* No SMS Default Send Options (ie: Can set the SE T610 to always get a delivery receipt)
* T9 can only be used for SMS, not other applications - like jotter.
* T9 can only really be used to send/reply to a message. Composing a message from drafts is not possible via T9
* Big Gripe: When sending SMS to several people - why doesn't it show names?? (this only happens on replies) Later on, when you go to the sent folder it only shows numbers - which is a pain, because you may find yourself guessing who you sent the text to!
* Big Gripe: No calendar support for all day events?? (This should have been fixed by now!)
* Wish backlight could stay on within cradle

The one app I truly miss from my palm/PPC days: Vindigo

Cheers,

* You can T9 in Jotter. The flip needs to be closed of course.

* The calender does have a all day event option.

The rest I think you're right about.
