Police car vs. SHO (part 1)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: DaBigBR

Scenario: Tired of listening to some punk with a 91 Taurus SHO talk about how bad he can beat my '95 Police Package Crown Victoria, I find him at a stop light one night.

We both launch...who do you guys think won?

My Car:
1995 Ford Crown Victoria Police Package
The car that was built to chase fast cars.
4.6L V8 (also found in 96+ Mustang GT)
215 HP RWD and a 4 speed automatic
Total Weight 4000 lbs + 180 (me) = 4180 lbs
last 0-60 was 9.25 with me and two others in the car.
Two month old Firestone Firehawk rubber

His Car:
1991 Ford Taurus SHO
Stands for SUPER HIGH OUTPUT
3.0L V6 (actually built by Yamaha) (24v DOHC)
220 HP FWD and a 5 speed manual
Total Weight 3000 lbs + 150 (him) = 3150 lbs
common 0-60 for these cars is 8.5 - 9.5
Year old Goodyear Eagle GT+4 rubber

For the record we were both alone in our respective vehicles. Mine was inspected daily, had oil changes every 1500 miles and serviced meticulously until it came out of service at the end of 2001. His car (according to him) was serviced as necesary by its previous owner.

So vote for who you think won the race, which was until one of us could get around the other safely.

I'll post the result once there are a few votes.

Well it all depends on how far the race was, My bet would be the Taurus off the line, but The Vic would catch it easly and pass it. Vic's aren't known for their get up, but are known to do very well on the top end. I used to drive a Police Packege Taurus at work and loved it. but I have been in may share of Vic's and have seen what they could do. So my bet is on the Vic.......

Like it says, until one of us could get around the other.

in my 2 cents this is a bit of a silly race my mini van could beat both of these cars off the line!

but i would go with the vic overall, as long as you were racing past 100 (62) if it was just to 100 the SHO has some pep. but the vic as posted above can hussle between 100 and 150.

Posted by: DaBigBR

What minivan could take my car off the line?

Posted by: Killa-b

Caravan : 3.8-liter, 4-speed automatic
Engine: 3.8-liter V6
Horsepower: 215 @ 5000
Torque: 245 @ 4000

Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 10.1 sec. 1/4-mile in 17.3 sec.

Top Speed: 109 mph

Braking: 60-0 mph in 146 ft.

Road Holding: 0.72 g.

Fuel Economy: 17 (City) / 25 (Highway)

from carpoint STOCK. if it had some rubber like you it would be the same or perhaps a bit faster. in a series of 0-60's there would be no overall winner.

9.5 seconds is SLOOOW there is NOTHING impressive about that a neon would even beat it.

but the SHO and the crown vic are cool cars for other reasons.

my friend's dad had a 98 SHO, sold it to my friend, then bought ANOTHER 99 SHO. You should see them race. its crazy

Vic would win

Posted by: DaBigBR

As much as I hate to admit it, the SHO got me.

We launched and ran side by side up to about 45 MPH and then he shifted and my car took a couple more seconds to decide to shift. He got his front bumber past me and swerved over in front of me...not *exactly* a safe win.

I took the car in for a transmission flush and fill today and am glad to report that my acceleration is smoother and quicker. I am doing new plugs, wires, air filter, oil change on Thursday, so I'll try to hook up for Cop Car vs SHO part 2

how could any of u pick the Vic to win???

The Tauraus has 5 hp, and over a THOUSAND pounds on the Vic!!! not to mention the SHO is a 5spd vs. a slush box.

The Crown Vic is good cuz it's newer, and on the RWD platform...

i was sorta surprised the win wasn't more decisive,

Posted by: kd7ctv

ok like I said in my previous post, the Taurus off the line, but it wouldn't matter in a longer race as the Police Vics are set to run better on the top end, they went through the similar debate when the Crown vics started coming into service at our Police Department, nobody liked them because the Caprice flew off the line, but they soon realized the vic could out do a Caprice on the top end, now they are looking at the Impala, I gotta say I have seen them both in the same turns with the Impala on the Vics A$$, I believe the vic would still do better on top though.....

Posted by: DaBigBR

The crown vic is great at top end ... you get it up to 123 and it SHIFTS! and rockets up to 130

The Impala is worthless in my opinion ... too small, underpowered, etc. The Intrepid ought to be something though.

first things first if this was for a quarter mile race the sho should win hands down. unless the driver is really bad at shifting then there's not much we can do to help it. I couldn't believe that many people voted for the vic. racing to your max speed isn't a good test on performance. it's acceleration, that's why there's only a 1/4 mile. as for 9.5 secs is slow!?! i drive a neon r/t and on the car enthusiast homepages. i should be getting high 14's at most unmodified. 9.5 is like a VERY heavily modified car! some civics could do that but they are not street legal after the mods done to achieve that. heh. 9.5 is something like a vette or a viper!

Posted by: tuffdog

His reference to a 9.5 was 0-60 time. If you think Corvette and Viper are that slow ur crazy Corvette Z06 is approx 4 seconds flat I believe.

Posted by: Azreal911

i was thinking 9.5 seconds for the quarter mile times. cause no one on the car forums brag about 0-60 times. usually it's the entire quarter mile. which i "think" a vette or viper can do.

Posted by: Killa-b

yea, 0-60 is very useless but as i said 9.5 0-60 is also VERY SLOW.

9.5 1/4 is VERY VEYR VEYR VYER VERY FAST!

but who cares about straight line racing? big deal go fast straight. its about how hard the car pulls from 150-250

Naw.. A vette is low 12's I think and the Viper is probably similiar.

Posted by: Killa-b

9.5 1/4 is stupid fast

i was readin R&T i think, and htye had a vette vs jet thing, the vette did 0-60 in 2.79. and 1/4 in 8. something

Posted by: Becks7

LPE 427 TT is something 0-60 in 1.98 seconds, and 1/4 of about 9.5

Posted by: mawti

ya, i saw that too. 1.98 is fregin' amazing. does anyone remember if it was on street tyres, drag radials or slicks?

street "cheaters" I believe...they are street legal but barely

More Info

Posted by: Becks7

if u read that thread some say it was on slicks...but they weren't

he used mickey thompson ET streets ... and it's on pump gas too

Posted by: tomcat

There is no debate...... The Vic would take it..... I would know.... I have personally taken one (my roomates)to 200Kmh and so has he!!!!! the only cars to have beat us are an Audi TT Quattro, a Volvo C70 Coupe and an NSX..... (the only Honda to beat us) I hate those little Piss ant Honda drivers who think they are hot
*****. this Vic eats them for dinner!!!!!! And the best part it looks completely stock, no add-ons!!!!!. You wouldn't even know untill we passed you doing 180!!!!!

Posted by: tomcat

well that'll teach me for not reading the whole thread......! |Oh well, I still think the Vic is better anyways....! That's just my two cents worth!!!! I still hate Hondas though!!!!!!

Posted by: DaBigBR

I can guarantee you that if I had a whole quarter mile I would beat the SHO. It's that first shift that makes all the difference in a quick race like we did.

I had my tranny fluid replaced and 0-60 times are at the low to mid 8 second marks...shifts were awful, and this definitely helped.

I should also mention that I do have the optional locking rear axle that may have helped some off the line. I get nothing more than a chirp where vic owners with an open differential get a full fledged burnout should they so desire.

Never would have guessed this thread would be so popular

oh btw: the nearest 1/4 mile with open testing is probably out of state.
