Free WAP for CDM-8900???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Maxer2112

Sorry if this has been posted before, but when you type ##2769737 (##BROWSER) on the 8900, you get IP settings. Now with my old T720 I remember putting in a server and port and gettting free wap that only costs airtime. I would like to know if anyone can find a free WAP server or whatever because I cannot find one. When you go to ##B2769737 press 1, 1, and enter a IP, the SEND key makes periods. I would really like to have free WAP so any help would be appreciated.

Posted by: AlteZza2k2

well im assuming that you have successfully entred the ip and port, in which case all you need to do is go into the wap broswer now, go into settings, and select which proxy you want to use.

Posted by: mcewen98

I have an 8900 and just set up WAP using www.waptunnel.com. It seems to work ok. I hear that there are a lot of options for home pages. http://www.google.com/wpl or http://wap.oa.yahoo.com

I have proxy 1 set to the homepage of yahoo and proxy 2 set to google's. So there are 3 things you need to set. The IP and Port which you get to from doing ##browser then the end key. Then you need to set the homepage which is in the browser menu after you click the "web" button

Posted by: Rodent

Dumb question here...how do you enter periods in the IP section for the proxys?

Thanks

Posted by: mcewen98

Took me a bit to figure that out too, had to look it up. Hit the Send key.

Posted by: elmersglue

I dont get this...Im putting in the ip setting and port number according to www.waptunnel.com and it seems to only work with the 9201 port setting. Even then, i cant access any websites. When i try to set a homepage, it doesnt work. Ive tried the yahoo one and the google one. Both dont work. Isnt there a way just to type in a website? Someone please help me. I probably blew like 15 airtime minutes trying to figure this out. Thanks

I am just playing with this as well. The homepage will only "keep" after a successful connect. So, if you are timing out, either try again, or set your time out limit a little bit longer. After a few tries, I finally set my home page to http://wap.oa.yahoo.com. Oh yeah, don't forget the "http://" in front of the URL. If you forget, the phone prepend some crazy internal stuff in the front.

Posted by: mcewen98

I get a lot of timeouts when I play around with it, especially with yahoo. Google seems better. Sometimes I have to retrya couple of times with yahoo.

This has been a very very interesting and informative string. Have gotten everything to work so far, but only with one setting to Yahoo. How do I tell phone I want it to go to different proxy setting as quoted above?

Many thanks for turning me on to this!!!!!

Posted by: mcewen98

it's in the settings of the browser.

Does anybody know why there are 2 sections to input an IP and Port for each Uplink 1, 2, and 3 menus?

I have only changed the settings for the first one and left the 2nd one alone but what is it used for?

Maybe if one doesn't work, it would switch to another?

Posted by: Fighto78

I'm totally new to this phone. Can some one exlpain all this to me step by step?

So far I've put the IP (207.232.99.109) and port (9201) into the Proxy 1 settings by typing ##2769737 into the phone then pressing end. After this it gets shady. People are talking about google and yahoo's site. How do I input these settings? Where do I go from here? Connecting to the web by pressing the 'web' button produces timeout after timeout.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Posted by: mcewen98

you need to change the browser settings, and change the default start page to either yahoo's site or google. I do not have either link right now. If you open the browser, let it time out, then press up, to highlight that funny box then hit enter a menu will pop down. Go into settings and enter the start page.

Posted by: Fighto78

I do'nt know what browser settings to set. I have the Proxy #1 assigned and I put either http://www.google.com/wpl or http://wap.oa.yahoo.com into the homepage and it just times out. It will send for a long time then ask for me to retry. I can't figure it out.

Posted by: mcewen98

Search around, I read another thread on her recently about people having problems with either with the WAP gateways. Either they are down or verizon is blocking them.

Posted by: Fighto78

Wow, this is awesome. I checked the weather for tomorrow from a restraunt

Anyways, how many minutes is this taking? So as soon as I press the web button I'm using minutes correct? When I press end, it ends the connection and stops the minute count right? Then when I press web again and get something else it starts counting again. I just don't want to be surprised when the bill comes.

Posted by: Arlo77

Congratulations, fighto78. I just got mine working yesterday, and it is WAY cool!! I am using a page I created at www.mywaplink.com as my home page, which allows me to customize things to my liking. I also am using a trial copy of the WinWAP browser (www.winwap.com) for debugging any WAP-related problems I run into, and I highly recommend it for getting things set up initially. Regarding minutes of use, I am more optimistic than you. I am assuming that usage is only counted while the 'UP Browser' icon (a black N on a yellow background) is displayed next to the 'Signal Strength' icon in the display indicators. I have noticed that this indicator will go off after a period of inactivity, with the page still displayed. Also, I can navigate to some pages, such as those previously viewed, without the indicator coming on at all, which I believe is a result of using cache memory. Maybe someone can verify for sure how the minutes are charged. I'm finding it very hard not to play with it before 9:00 p.m.

Now for the one negative I have found.... It seems that the homepage I have stored in the browser settings reverts back to the Verizon default when I power the phone off and back on. Has anyone else noticed this? It's a real pain to re-enter it each time I power up...

I ran into a setting some where that looks like it allows you to set how long to stay connected before disconnecting. Can't find where it is now. Try the OpenWave browser settings, and Circuit Linger. Default to 30 secs, I think.

I have turned my phone off a few times and my home page stayed on the Yahoo page I designated. I did notice that
- you have to enter HTTP:// in front of the home page URL
- When you try to set your home page, and you have any kinda problems (server down, time out...etc), the home page will not stick. Always revert back to the darn openwave one (which never works.

Posted by: Arlo77

That setting is called "Web Idle Time", and is configurable under ##BROWSER. I agree that this value does seem to control how long the browser will stay connected without activity. As far as how usage time is charged, I would think that this would be a pretty hot topic with Mobile Web users. What I'm afraid of is that every time I re-connect for 5 seconds to download a page and then disconnect, I am getting charged for one minute, which is the minimum billable unit. I went to the Verizon web page and found this in the fine print under Mobile Web:

"Phone will end data call and session after a minimum of 30 seconds of inactivity. New data call will be initiated when use is resumed. Airtime rounded up to the next full minute, so actual allowances may vary. Mobile Web access will deplete minutes allowance. "

I then dialed *228 to see how my usage was coming along and was surprised to see that I had racked up almost 100 peak minutes yesterday, most of them using WAP. With a monthly allowance of 400, I think I need to get myself under control very soon....

Hi! I'm new here, and all I have to say is this forum is GREAT!

It helped my out before when I got my LG VX440 and now that I got my Audiovox CDM8900!

Anyways, I found out why I couldn't connect to Google WAP site!

The address listed above was incorrect! The actual address for the Google WAP site is:

http://www.google.com/wml

Not /wpl as was previously stated!

Anyways, have a Happy New Year, and keep up the good work!

Posted by: scooternoof

Well, I got the free wap to work with both my vx6000 and my cmd8900, but seem to be having the same problem with both. I try to download a free ring tone from tagtag and about halfway through the download, the phone seems to restart........boots me out and then sends me back to the main screen on the phone. Is this the setting that people are changing? The idle time? How do I get to this setting and what should I change it to?
Thanks!!!!!

Posted by: mcewen98

Every time I have try to use the free WAP, the connection always times out. If WAP is going to be so slow that I have to increase the timeout, then that is just way to slow to be not frustrating to use.

How fast is it for everybody else?

I am using IP:
207.232.99.109

and port:
9201

I can't believe I got this working through my provider. So anyway, how do I just type addresses into this little browser then? I don't see anything in the manual or on here about it. I don't want to be stuck on google, or changing the home page to get to a new site.

Only way that I figured out is to use the BOOKMARK settings... Move your cursor to select the Button on top. Select it, click 5 for bookmark, click on a entry, hit "Menu" (right button), and edit... Unless you type 50 words per minute on your cell, it will be eating your airtime while you type in the URL. Plus, there are only so many worthwhile WAP sites. I usually use the Menu->3->6 to enter the browser if I don't want to go to my home page. And modify the bookmark before I get on line.

Thanks, I see how it works now. Now I have a problem when I try to get to Zaediex's test png. Says page size is too big. I've also tried pointing to just a .mid, but there is an error, something about resource type if I remember. I get that same error when I click the enter site link on tagtag.com. I just want to see a new ring tone or wallpaper work on this thing already.

Hey I've changed everything and it was all working fine but it seems that in the last 3 or 4 days that nothing will connect. i'm getting a network connection, but it will just give me the "sending))))))))" over and over again for about 10 minutes. Before this happened it kept telling me "server not responding" for every site i tried. Now it wont even do that. Please post any ideas you may have! Thanks!!!

Posted by: acf

I assume you need the "Wireless Web" plan to use this?

You might want to try to switch to a different proxy, or even host your own WAP gateway. There was a thread last week about some problems, and switching proxy made it working again... I can't find the exact thread now, but the following threads might help you find some other gateways.

No kidding! Well hell, what am I waiting for...

Actually if your provider is Cellular One (Western Wireless) you must have a feature that requires data or the data service will not be active on your account.

Mine works just fine bro!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then obviously you have a feature that requires data.

I tried changing the IP and port to waptunnel's IP. I get the following error: Internal server error (500) Servlet not found / www.openwave.com
Any ideas? Thanks.

I actually just got my bill and what I thought was "free" (just used my normal minutes) is charged as data usage. Like an extra $10 when I barely used it. I don't think I'll be using WAP again.

could this be true for Verizon? Anyone who used Verizon w/it, did u guys get bill for Data use?

Posted by: cclay25

At the present time Cellular One (Western Wireless) seperates data and voice. Different features come with different data allowances. If you go over your allowance then you will be charged .39 for each minute. Verizon doesnt seperate data and voice. Your minutes can be used for either.

I would not use it so much until you get a bill to make sure you didn't get charged. There are some stories floating in the forum that people got charged for data. On my last month's bill, they showed up airtime only, but better safe than sorry.

Posted by: SimpleCoax

Curse you Verizon users!

Now you have two up on me, maybe more. I can't send pictures because of my provider, therefore I can't put custom images on my phone or custom ringtones. I also type in free WAP settings and get charged for data service anyway. I guess the only thing non-Verizon users have going for us is no Verizon banner and we can see our caller ID. At least I think all 8900 users suffer a lame, loud and unchangeable startup and shutdown animation that our providers forced upon us.

Posted by: cclay25

Where are you located? I can get custom ringtones on my phone now and will be able to send and receive pictures in march. Some Cellular One areas have picture messaging already and the rest will have it by June.

Posted by: Got VoX

THIS DID NOT WORK AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!! I was charged for web service after following all instruction given by you guys!!! Don't try it people!!!

South Dakota. I guess I could use Brew to get a ringtone for like $2.

Then you have to pay 39 cents a minute for the brew service what a fricken crock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: cclay25

Brew is a data service just like Mobile Web. Cellular One (Western Wireless) seperates voice and data. You can purchase features that require data but each has a limited allowance. If you go over that allowance you will be charged overage according to you price plan and/or feature. Current brew data plans are below

$0 - 15 minutes
$1.99 - 60 minutes
$5.99 - 180 minutes

If you subscribe to MyCellone One Web&Text for $7.99 you get 250 minutes to use for either brew or Mobile Web.

On the 8900, press menu->3->6. Move the cursor to highlight the OpenWave button on top. Click ok. Press 9 for settings, and you will find proxy settings in the configurations.

Tagtag doesn't respond very well for some reason. I've gotten it to work a few times on my phone but it doesnt respond most of the time. Just keep trying.

Posted by: johnbrain666

thx. i set it to yahoo, since mainly I just want sports scores now and then. Does anyone know if MSN travel works on waptunnel? Flights and stuff like that? I know hotmail does not but don't know if travel requires the same type of cookies. I can try after 8 PM when my night min kicks in but thought somebody may have a better idea.

Hey everyone, I just became a member today. What a great forum! Been lurking for about a week and decided I just had to sign up. I've only been using my 8900 for a week now, but I love it! I've been following this thread and I'm still not sure if this free WAP works or not? Am I reading correctly that Verizon users can in-fact get this to work and only use allotted minutes? I see some Verizon users saying it does, but others say it doesn't. I guess the best way for me to find out is to just go ahead and try it, but if there is a true consensus, then I'd like to know.

Go to the menu, but try NOT to use the CLR key, just start to enter your number/ip address. See if that works. I noticed that there are some "bugs" with the hidden browser menu.

Posted by: jivemastert

i tried that to, but it didnt wanna work.

edit...
i restarted my phone and tried that again and it did work. thanks.

Posted by: Clipdin

Well I finally had a chance to try out the web "stuff" this weekend and it all worked great! I made the yahoo page my homepage, signed-in with my yahoo account and read my e-mail, checked weather, sports, news, very cool! Now the big question is, will I get billed outside of my unl. n/w? I added the Google site as a bookmark too. Only time will tell about about the billing.

Try to exit the port entry page, reenter it, don't press CLR, just type the port number in.

Here's a stupid question (but I couldn't find the answer anywhere in this thread): How can you tell if you've disconnected? My first connect seemed like it took a second or two. Each subsequent connect was very quick. I'm just a bit paranoid about being connected long than I intend.

Let me add on to that stupid question with this one: does the WAP browser funciton like a normal web browser, with a cache and the like? That might explain my quick connection

On the Verizon 8900, when you are connected, you get a little blue telephone handset icon (between the signal strength and 1x icon). Yes, the browser does have a very small cache. When you are disconnected the icon is not there. If you close the flip, it disconnects. Or you can select Exit in the OpenWave menu to disconnect too.

Hmm.. when connected I get a yellow box with a black N in it.

edit: up consulting the manual, I see that indicates that I'm using the UP browser. WTF is the UP browser?

Oops, yeah, a yellow square with N in it is when you browse. When you use GIN is when you will see a phone handset. Sorry for the confusion. Not sure what a "UP" browser is.

Posted by: reykjavik

ok, so when everything is said and done, after using the 12 dollar a year service and trying all the free services, I would like to revert back to the expensive service. The main reason is because it actually WORKS! as opposed to the mobileweb4u service which is run by a community college marketing dropout and all the "free" services which dont let you change your homepage or even set a bookmark. So....that being said, how does one go about getting back the original verizon settings so I can use that service instead?

I think my phone still has the original setting... Here, try this:
- enter ##BROWSER[END] (##2769737 [end key]) to enter the WAP proxy menu
- now enter the following IP address for all the proxy you have modified 199.74.153.210
- change port to 9203
- if you have problem entering IP/Port number, try to exit back to menu, select the same menu, but don't use CLR key to erase current entry. Just start typing the IP/Port number. This will automatically replace your current setting
- probably need to contact Verizon to turn on your service again if necessary
- there is a link on the very bottom of their front page to cancel your $12 service

Posted by: reykjavik

actually its a scam...all it does is cancel the subscritption to your service, but not the original 12 dollars...

I tried it with the new settings and it worked....thanks!

Well, this blows. I just got a bill for this month, and it has Data Use all over it... $6+ to be exact. I used the waptunnel settings (ip and port) for UP Link1 and still got charged at the end of the month. Now my inet doesnt work at all, but tells me "Security error: Key not recognized" I have no idea what it is or what key its asking, since i havent chnage any 'key' options on my computer in the last few weeks or so.

curse you verizon

Posted by: Spurls

OK I use the Audiovox 8410 which uses the same software as the 8600 I'm told. There are a few things that I wanted to throw out there for you folks to muddle over.

I set up mobileweb4u for my proxy 1 and WAPTunnel for Proxy 2
Firstly when the phone powers off then on I frequently loose my homepage setting which goes back to the default. but not only that, but I usually find my bookmarks gone which is quite frustrating but according to the folks at Alltel it is a known problem which is apparently the result of using a third party WAP gateway. The problem donsen't seem to have any predicability and seems to happen only if the phone "glitches" which it does every couple of weeks or so. Also WAPtunnell is frequently unavailable for long periods of time which is a pain in the butt cause it doesn't time out when your first launch the browser, instead it just keeps calling for the Gateway server for several mins. As a result you can't get the browser menu to switch Proxys and are forced to just change the IP's in order to get the browser to launch. (Or mabey that's just me)

There are many websites that don't work with waptunnel and a few that don't work with mobileweb4u. But one thing is certain, any site that requires an SSL connection will not work. For example you can browse MSN's site, but you cannot "Login with your Passport" as that attempts to negociate a secure connection. However Yahoo.com uses plain text login, so theres no problem.

The phone is only online as long as the network indicator is on, but it does round up to the min even if your only on for 10 sec. The term "UP Browser" refers to the fact the the browser is actively online. As opposed to when it is surfing using the local cache.

That's all I got, if anyone knows a solution to the bookmark glitch or knows a better free or discount WAP gateway please hit me up.

P.S. Alltel uses the same mins for voice and data, so all u burn are your mins, or nothing druing free periods (ie nights and weekends)

Posted by: s2kohio

Spurls:

The 8900 is a weird phone. But you are correct, when the phone burps you lose your bookmarks.

To avaid that problem, I use winksite.com. I set up all my bookmarks there. On my phone I use 1 bookmark to winksite. That way, if the 8900 burps all I have to do is:

1) insert my homepage (changing it from www.openwave.com which is set as firmware homepage default and does not work with 3rd party gateways)

and

2) insert my 1 bookmark back into the phone and I am back in business.

Hope this helps your 8900 burping problems.....

Sorry to ask a stupid question but my Free WAP doesnt work. Well I already put in the IP addresses and all the ports and stuff but when I open the Web browser it just says "sending" with the N icon on the top. Nothing happens. After a few minutes it says "server not responding". What do I do...it never worked.

When you are stuck in the sending sending sending more, you need to press and hold the zero key. Your phone will 'error out' and when you see the alert box, go up to the openwave icon and press it. Then press 9 and edit your homepage. You cannot have www.openwave.com as the homepage. It will not work. enter a working wap homepage and you should be good to go

I don't know about the other guy but I am trying to use a valid WAP homepage. I've tried both the google one and the waptunnel one. If I'm on verizon do I need any specific plan features to be able to do this?

Not sure about VZW but I know that if you cannot successfully connect to a homepage you have entered into your phone it will revert back to openwave.com

So, if the IP's you are using are not working, your homepage cannot be saved into the cell phone.

Hope this helps.

You cant, it sucks. do a forum search for it, we've spoken about that issue a bunch of times.
