Downloading pics from the web to my slider

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I recently got a slider cell phone from bell mobility and have been searching the net for ringtones and wallpapers/screensavers. ringtones are a sinch to download and use but with the pics the only way ive successfully downloaded pics is through the bell mobility website, but they charge you 2 bucks for each picture u upload and then the broswer time you use to download the pics from their server.

ive been to tagtag.com and tried plenty of times to download pics from there, and i get the same error every time:

406: not acceptable
1015: invalid content type

ive tried gifs, jpgs, pngs, u name it ive tried it and nothing works
always that same error

what gives???
can anyone explain to me the proper way to download pics?

Thanks in advance

theres gotta be a way to do this?? has anyone gotten this to work?

I'm in the same boat ...
not only cant i get any sort og graphic onto my 2 day old slider.. its a pain in the #$% to even get ringtones onto it.

I ve only managed to get a measly 3 polyphonic tones onto it. the others either dont work, or have the same name so they overwrite the ones i wlaready have.

Ive sent GIF,PNG,BMP .. u name it.. nothing seems to work..
i tried setting up a WAP site (tagtag.com/saman) and using it to download a midi file.. but the phone wont recognize the midi file as valid!(gives me those two ****** errors the original poster is talkin about.)..

Im in Canada, and on Bell Mobility.

Posted by: stino4life

for the ringtones ive set up my own little site for them

www.pixxl.ca/midi

they work perfect for me

but ya with the wallpapers are pissin me off, NOTHING seems to be the proper 'content type'

theres gotta be enough people getting the wallpapers to work

Posted by: kyoceraSE47user

i can get the midi files off ur site ..
thanx
are thes ejust ordinary midi files? or have u played around with the mime type or something?
not just the wallpaper.. we ahould also be able to download some new games ...

Posted by: stino4life

there just regular midi files. some of them i had to edit and make shorter so they can loop

for that i used a program called midi maestro

other than that i didnt change any of the mime setting
just straight midis

but yea i wanna get those wallpapers working now

anyone out there got any idea???

Posted by: stino4life

does anyone know how to download pics from the free services such as tagtag.com or their own webserver??

Posted by: sveiki

I took a look at the mime-types the slider supports, and i didnt see any for gif or jpg (which is all tagtag.com has) It looks like the only graphics mime-type on the phone is PNG. So unless you found a site for slider pics (or use the bell downloads *shudder*), you may have to set up your own server.

Use this site to get your mime-types (or wait till I get home to Toronto from Christmas in NJ):

http://phones.iridani.cx/

i dont understand how that mime website work.....

also i have tried a png file on my own webserver

no luck as of yet

im sure if we figure this out alot of slider owners will be happy

Hey guys, Im in the same boat as you are. I can get any midi ringtones to my slider no problem but pictures are another story. I know the only kind of pic you can get onto your phone would be a png of less then 8kb. Theres no problem changing jpegs to pngs in the simple Paint program. But, even when I put these pngs on my own server and try to download them to my slider they dont seem to work.
Just looked at bells site for getting pics to your phone..Who the heck would pay 2 bucks a picture? Well, Id definatly give 2 bucks to whoever can figure this out.. lol

Hi All.

Firstly, I like many am in the same boat with regards to d/l ringtones and wallpapers.

However my situation is somewhat worse in that my provider here doesn't even support d/l graphics, and the ringtones are not polyphonic and not worth even a mention.

Thanks to stino4life for providing a link to his site however, I rather enjoyed the "beat-it" midi, and now have it on my phone -- thanks

You need a webserver that can define MIME-Types. MIME-Type definitions look something like this:

application/x-png

This would be a MIME definition for .png files, for example (NOT NECESSARILY YOURS, USE http://phones.iridani.cx/ to find out the MIME-types for your phone.

Basically, MIME-types are defined on a webserver and tell the webserver and the browser (in this case your phone) how to handle them. Computers can mostly download anything no matter the MIME-Type. But do you notice sometimes when you click on a link, a suggested program to open it with will be listed? This is usually because the MIME-type listed on the webserver is defined to be handled by a specific program on your computer.

What you need to do is run a webserver (if you have WinXP you can use IIS-- search for IIS in Help and Support in the Start Menu, or I've heard this is a good program http://www.mywebserver.org/us/ )

Install it, follow the instructions and find where you define your mime-types and set them up based on the output from http://phones.iridani.cx

Then try to download on your phone from the server. If you don't have your mime-types set up properly, the files will still appear to be in invalid format on your phone's browser.

Now, Ive tried using mywebserver.org, but that doesnt seem to work with my computer. Will try the xp server thing you talked about. Would there be away to adjust the mime settings of my own website? I do have some server space and an ftp program, would you know how I could go about doing it that way?

Thanks again
Matt

Since we have access to our phones ip, is it possible to hack it and load stuff onto the phone? Kinda like how hackers send out virus' and trojans? I'm looking into this method but can only find info on windows systems.

No, i don't believe you can. You can get your phone's IP address, but unless it has software loaded to receive IP transmission of files (other than web browsing) you can't send this way. Some phones allow you to send ringtones and graphics via your phone's e-mail address, but that depends on your phone, and if your provider has E-mail-to-SMS you can use.

In this case, it really depends. Most webspace providers don't allow this. If you are paying for webspace, or webhosting, some services will allow mime-type changes, e-mail the provider to find out. Chances are if you are not paying for the webspace, you can't do it. The XP server (well actually its in many Windows, and Windows NT versions), in IIS, is fully-configurable, I'm pretty sure you can add mime-types for specific directories even.

Yep, I was playing around with IIS for a while and you can definatly adjust mime settings. However, I ran into a bunch of other problems.. says I need to make an NTFS server etc etc. The webhosting I get is from a company where your supposed to pay but since I know the owner, I get it for free Im just gunna have to ask If i can adjust mime settings with that server and take it from there.
Thanks again

A webhosting service like that should allow it... especially if you are friends with the owner.

The IIS server doesnt need to have an NTFS system. This is just another example of Microsoft trying to tell everybody to do things their way. Get started here if you need help:
