Nec 525

any opinions?

Posted by: MITHRANDIR

Not yet. I will be getting a NEC525 soon. Hopefully my experience will be good.

I like the thought of a quad-band gsm phone. (850/1900, 900/1800)

I would have liked to have analog on the phone (just in case), but I figure that I primarily stay near metro areas most of the time, so this should not be an issue.

As I went into the ATT Store the other day to ask a few questions about a newly released phone (the Samsung X426, I posted a thread here about it recently) the guy in front of me was returning his NEC 525. His only complaint was the camera quality, which was a big deal for him. Just for you guys to note...

Posted by: Ling Ti Len

Yes, if camera quality is important to you, the NEC 525 is definitely not the phone for you. However if you just plan to snap pics on your phone and use the for Caller ID and backgrounds and whatnot, it's quite sufficient.

It's an absolutely terrific phone, especially for those looking for a change from the Samsung globalopoly on flip-phones. Hope you choose it!

i returned mine..... i could never get reception (maybe just my area) and the phone was very big and bulky

Posted by: Roasted

That, along with the Panasonic GU87 were phones I never wanted to touch. It was like holding a full size text book next to your head...

I Recvd phone yesterday. I used it to call during my commute to work (through Central NJ). Except for one area near Clarksburg,NJ and another about Rooselvelt, NJ along CR 571, I had service.

The volume was fine without the earpiece (at maximum volume). Even while I was driving the volume was not a problem for me.
I will need to see if it is acceptable at a lower volume. I did notice that if I position the phone with the ear piece directly over my ear, the phone sounds louder. I will need to practice a bit more.

At times I noticed the text "ATT WIRELESS" disappeared. I will need to check if this means I was roaming. According to the Manual the text should have turned Orange if I was roaming.

I will test the phone on a trip to MD. (I-95, I-695, I-70).

I still have some issues with my order, that I will need to resolve when I get home. (accessories ordered did not arrive & did not receive promised web minutes. I did not have all info needed to resolve issue at work )

Customer Service: 1½-1-3/4 hr wait on 1 number (866-391-0749)
I was directed to appropriate number. I had another 10-15 minute wait.

People I spoke to at CS were friendly and helpfull.

1-3/4-2 hours wait for CS is unacceptable.

Fortunately I called from work and was able to work while waiting to connect to CS.

I have had this phone for about 2 weeks now and at first I was thinking about returning it but Im going to keep it now. The reception can be great and sometimes it can be funky. I would like to think this is ATT's fault (GSM) and not the phone's. The volume is good if you center your ear over the tiny circular hole. Also the earpiece worked fine for me and its even compatible with regular headsets (I plugged in my house phone headset and it worked fine). The camera does suck. I forget the resolution but the pictures wont be good for anything but caller id or to just keep on your phone. The 2x zoom is also pretty useless because all it does it make everything really blurry. Features are cool but the ringtones and backgrounds that come with the phone suck. I just bought the usb cable and used the memory editor to put some decent stuff on it. As of right now I didn't see much of an alternative to the nec 525 for what I wanted from a phone. It only costs $50 when you activate with att so its a great deal.

Could those of you who have this phone post some pictures you've taken with it? A picture is worth a thousand words you know.

Posted by: Ling Ti Len

Actually, in the case of the NEC 525's cameraphone, a picture is worth only one word: crappy.

I cannot figure how to save the photo after taking a picture (so far ).

The picture quality is not that good. I think it is fine if you need a camera in an emergency (ie. scene of accident) for general pictures.

I am back from my trip to MD. I had good (2 bars) to great (4 bars) reception along my route.

CR-571
I-195 in NJ
US 1 in NJ/PA
PA Turnpike from US 1 to Harrisburg, PA.
US 15 from Harrisburg, PA to Frederick, MD.

I forgot to bring my phone charger. Phone battery died on MD so I gould not check service on return trip.

I-695, (MD)
I-95, (MD/DE)
I-295, (DE/NJ)
SR-70 (NJ)

So far I think the Phone is very good.

MY review:

generally i think the phone is a beautiful thing. the layout is very user friendly, the LCD and 2nd lcd is very clear, and i think the camera is just fine, remeber its not a camera with a phone, its a phone with a camera.

some cons:

the volume on the speaker sucks, i hear ok if its quiet and im on max, but if im a a party tere nopoint to even answer the phone

Attached is a pic i took wit the 525, i think its ok

my bad heres the pic:

switched from sprint & ordered ATT service/phone via website @ midnite on the 3rd, got my 525 on the 5th - fedex to hawaii for free in 2 days - had a couple of issues with order, but ATT CS are on the ball - although hold times did suck a bit...

'default' volume is ok but i like to run it a bit higher - i use a headset exclusively & had no probs hearing in a relatively quiet environment - and i hope it's at least as good as my old samsung 6100 was while driving or in noisy areas.

as far as coverage in the coastal areas of Oahu, which is where Sprint failed miserably - have yet to take it out on the road because i don't have anything programmed in it yet. Besides, since a jillion other people are porting their phone numbers over, it's taking them 5 days to do it instead of 5 hours - so can't receive incoming calls yet.

figured out how to use the phone address book without having to read the manual (yay?)

it is a little thick, but for what it does, i think i'll survive.

all in all, so far a cool phone!

I recvd good signal on

I-695, (MD)
I-95, (MD/DE)
I-295, (DE/NJ)
SR-70 (NJ)

On a trip to NYC I had good signal in Lincoln Tunnel and Most of NYC.

Signal near Bear Mountain (upstate NY) is not as good. (I expected this, since it is away from main metro areas.

Here is what i have had with ANY camera phone. The picture quality is OK overall..Unless you want to take a pic with you and a friend or sumthin else that would be important to you. They are good phones to ahve in case you have an accident, emergency, or even witness a crime. My father works for State Farm and said that many new estimates hes gone out for had pictures taken from a pictures phone. On the other hand, digital cameras with 2MP or more are way better. The quality is better and they have a larger picture. Pixel x Pixel. I would suggest getting a camera phone if you are just goiung to use it for MMS or wuick snapshots for fun. Just make sure you bring a digital camera or 35mm camera to take pictures with when you want to have better quality.

NEC Has BAD HORRIBLE Customer Service
I purchased a NEC 525 cell phone through AT&T, one week later the phone died unexpectedly, called At&T got a new one, that one also died the same way.

For some reason there is a bug in this phone that causes it to die (even with full battery) when you turn it back on it comes up with an hourglass instead of the normal startup logo and freezes
eventually the phone gets to the point that it will not even try to turn on

but the second one died outside of AT&Ts 30 day return policy after which NEC is supposto handle Credit Repair ETC. Called NEC, the number they have listed is not even a valid phone number, e-mailed them, no responce, finally found a number that works, "i'm sorry we dont do that in this derartment" after many transfers with surly attendants and having to explain the problem Many times to diferent people, quite angry, i ask to speak to the manager NEC claims that At&T is supposto handle it which they are not, asked to speak to the managers manager spent about half an hour on hold, to finally speak with somebody
NEC refuses to give a refund and insists that its At&Ts problem, the woman is extremely rude and ends up hanging up on me.

i give it 30 minutes, and call NEC again
only to go for another round with their rude ignorant staff, finally after 30 minutes fo arguing with them they are willing to replace the defective phone with another one the same, i say NO i dont want another one of your defective NEC 525 phones i want my money back, Back on hold.... as i type this

it will probably be an hour before i get off hold
and if things keep going like this i will have probably been screwed out of over 400.00 by theese Crooks

Bottom line DONT BUY A NEC 525 CELL PHONE
and dont buy products from NEC
unless you want the same headache and waste of your time

yup. bongowireless can unlock NEC phones. i got my nec 515 and 525 unlocked there last week. it only took 2 minutes for each phone and the guy came out with them in perfect condition. i have no regrets. and the best thing is, they take full responsibility if something happens to your phone during the unlocking process (such as cable accidentally comes off and phone crashes).

i have my unlocked 515 if anyone wants to buy it, PM me. i dont really need 2 phones. i just bid on a 515 and a 525 and ended up winning both on ebay. so i was forced to buy them both.
