Kyocera Blade - Data Cable Connector

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have the Kyocera Blade, and I have seen data cables for it, but I have a question....
Where does the damn thing plug into the phone?
It doesn't have a standard data port on the bottom like most phones do. Just curious where it goes.

If it's like The rave then it goes in to the heads phone jack thing

I picked up one of these puppies today (free!) and I can't figure out for the life of me where to plug in a data connector. The only external connections as far as I can see are the power plug and the handsfree. Other than that, there seems to be a rubber plug or something on the back, beside the antenna but I have no idea if it is blocking anything.

That's what I was thinking... Where does it go??

After reading that other reply, and inspecting the headset jack, I think it somehow plugs in there.

If you pull out the rubber plug for the headset jack and look in there, you'll see that there is space around the jack itself and the phone casing. There's also a metal contact there that a head set plug obviously wouldn't make contact with, so I'm going to have to assume it's part of the data connector.

anyone have a decent resolution picture of the cable? We could probably figure out from the connector where this goes. The headset jack theory is interesting, i see what you're talking about with the contacts but I'm not sure if thats it, though i dont have a clue where else it would be.

Fellow Blade owners,

Please have an open mind and appreciate how innovative Kyocera is! The connector on the Blade is a multi-purpose: audio, data, power! It is not a theory but a fact! I highly recommend you grab the cable kit with the Kyocera Wireless Desktop (allows you to backup / edit / add contacts as well as simple .kws ringtones)

When connect to a headset, just plug into that socket! When connect to a data cable TXDTA10044, just plug into that socket! When connect to the Portable Hands-Free Car Kit, just plug into that socket and it provides power to charge the battery as well as a speakerphone!

Plug it in, Plug it in

Andrew,

If the crooks who broke into my car over the weekend have not taken the speakerphone / charger kit, I can show the real thing in action

Aww damn!

Have you used it for 1X data yet?
Since it's a USB connector and not a serial like my old Sanyo 4000 cable, does it require special drivers/setup for internet access that require you to use their own dialer instead of the windows one?

You'll have to send me the desktop software so I can find a cheap data cable online and start messing around with it.

Andrew,

1. I have tried the Telus Mobility data connection: both 1x packet switched (i.e. Velocity Wireless) and IS-95 circuit switched (i.e. QNC). However, in order to enjoy the snappy 1x packet data connection, you have to pay for the monthly subscription fee.

2. Cable / Modem Drivers comes with the data cable kit as well as download page at Kyocera Wireless web site. It is compatible with dial-up applications.

3. Do not count on aftermarket cable coming to eBay or dealer around the corner! As we can see how unique the connector is, I do not think the demand and profit-making potential have reached the critical mass.

Give yourself a while to fully familiar with the handset first. If you use wirless data connection all the time or simply want to use the Kyocera Wireless Desktop, buy yourself the kit.

After reading the Kyocera Phone Desktop user guide, it doesn't really look like it would be of any use to me. Maybe you can tell me if it does anything else aside from what I saw in the user guide.

Contact Manager - Transfer contacts, etc. I already do this on my own manually between my cell and Palm.

Phone Monitor - Only really useful if your screen is broken.

Ringer Manager - I have my own website setup with ringers on it and access it using the "Go To Site" feature, and download the ones I want onto the phone.

Does it come with an image manager to add images to the phone? Any other major features I missed?

If I have to pay minimum $30/month for data access using 1X, then I won't be using the cable for that either, and I am stuck wondering if I even need the cable to begin with.

Can you use the Blade with QNC instead of 1X using the data cable?

Andrew,

I think I have already told you the answer in my last post hehe

"If you use wirless data connection all the time or simply want to use the Kyocera Wireless Desktop, buy yourself the kit."

AND,

"...both 1x packet switched (i.e. Velocity Wireless) and IS-95 circuit switched (i.e. QNC)"

Yeah, I think you did answer my questions in that previous post.

Kyocera desktop has nothing overly exciting to offer me for the price of the cable, and I don't use data enough to need it either. I barely used it when I had the data cable for the Sanyo anyways.

As for the... "...both 1x packet switched (i.e. Velocity Wireless) and IS-95 circuit switched (i.e. QNC)" quote, I thought you meant you've tried both seperately. I didn't realize you meant both on the Blade.

And apparently the desktop software can be found on eBay for $2, and the data cable is $40 on the Kyocera site, but the data kit (cable + software) from Kyocera is on back order.

EDIT - Forgot to ask if you got a headset connected to the blade to "wake up" properly? I keep saying it after training and it doesn't WAKE UP!
