RL2500 / SCP-5400 screensavers don't work??

OK, so i finally get a cute phone (the Sanyo RL2500 / SCP-5400) that (suppposedly) has lots of customizeable features, unlike my nextel i30. It clearly shows on the Sprint website and the product box a particular background (In the phone menu I believe it is called the Standby Display) and that image is NOT available on my phone as a preset. Here's the kicker though: When you are looking at the menu options for "Standby Display," it asks you if you want to use a clock or whatever or a screen saver. But the screensavers that I have downloaded are not in the list, nor are the other screen savers that one can choose from in the "Animation > Standby" menu. So basically it looks as though I am stuck choosing between one of 3 really lame photos... or am I missing something???
The screen savers that I downloaded from Sprint's website are from the misc. category and had no image preview on the website - does that mean they're a different type or something?
Also, the phone claims to have a feature to assign a particular picture to a contact in the phonebook for photo caller ID - even if I had a data cable, which I don't, what kind of custom pics can you put on the phone? I didn't see a "gallery" or folder of any type where a person would store pics, except "Downloads," but even then the options doesn't say "Pictures" it says "Others."
This phone has the worst product manual and documentation that I have ever seen! Was it really worth it to spend $150 on this phone???

Can somebody please explain to me how to change the default display image to something other than the 3 presets???
TIA,
Aimee
