A56>C56 conversion

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: alpha tag

all the features of the C56 will work in the conversion

just change the GPRS paramaters.. u can even disable it which i did for my dad's phone.. he doesn't use all the features.. i just did it for fun

like i said.. can't kill it unless ur a total idiot and flash the phone when it's ON.. (friend's friends have done that so they roasted their more expensive siemens phones )

Posted by: vistago

Hi,

My phone is connected to my computer through the cable, and even when it is connected it will turn on fine. However, whenever I use freia, the phone won't turn on (during the thing where it says "waiting for phone to turn on") and then it just ends with "Comm_LoadBoots: phone is not powered on".

Any ideas?

Posted by: alpha tag

- plug in the cable that's connected to the comp. to the phone.. make sure the phone is OFF!

- when it says waiting for phone to turn on, press the power button on the phone and then the status will change.. it's just an abrupt push of the button.. until there's a status change.. don't hold it for too long or it may turn on

Posted by: vistago

I tried that. For some reason, I don't get any form of a status change.

The other weird thing is my cable. It has a switch on it - one option says L and the other R. If I put it on L, the phone begins to charge. If it is on R - the phone won't turn on during any form of USB activity...

Posted by: alpha tag

^ yea i have the same cable

make sure the com setting is correct in freia...

Posted by: Rebel_lord

In Configuration, select Bootcore Bug in the Boot Type .. in older versions it may say something different but either way it's the 3rd option from the top or the first option from the bottom (or in other words ... it's the last option) =).... hehe

Posted by: vistago

OK. Device Manager has the driver installed and the port showing up no problem. It reads COM3. All of the settings are default.

So, in Freia (v. 10), settings are as follows:
Com Port of Cable: COM3
Speed of Communication: 115200
Com Port setup: RTS and DTR checked
Process Information: Medium
Boot Type: Normal.

Error is as follows:

FREIA - Engine build 10, Frontend build 9
Thanks goes out for the following:
Maxim, Rolis, Sergey, PapaJoe, Lead,
TheWizard, Jozso (for hardware and cable
support and of course beta testing),
Nico, Victor, Pinker, Tom,
and all the others who supports ...
COMM_LoadBoots : selected phone family is 8
TTY_OpenCOMPort : opening COM3
COMM_IsBootRunning : bootcode does not seem to be running
COMM_LoadBoots : Waiting to power on the phone ...
COMM_LoadBoots : phone is not powered on

Posted by: alpha tag

ok

use an older version of freia... the one w/o the funky interface

Posted by: Rebel_lord

change the boot type in configuration ... see my prev post

Posted by: vistago

Ok - where do i get it.

And i really appreciate your help

Hi

I have a Siemens A55 and a USB cable (compatible with A55 / C55).

I'd like to convert my A55 to C55.

I downloaded the Freia software and C55 Flash, but I coundn't find an option to use the USB cable.

Is there any way to do the conversion using this USB cable?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Francisco

Hi, can you send me the files and instructions on how to convert a Fido A56 to a Rogers C56? Thanks much appreciated.

You could send files to winniel0@yahoo.com

Did you even read the majority of this thread?

What does the c56 have that the a56i doesn't? I think its the same, right....?

I guess I can say it again... Did you even read the majority of this thread?

It has GPRS, polymorphic ringtones, speaker phone, voice recording, java games, and various other things which I cant think of right now.

Posted by: ps2wiz

Did you know that the 56i has grps, speaker phone, voice recording, poly ringtoes, (not sure bout java)?

Try brushing up on your phone info, before you try to act smart.

So the basic answer is no?

Any have patches ( no graphics) for this mobile??

Im making now some patches, is posible add a call cronometer with a patch (a colombian do it! ), add more memory for contacts, convert the clock to digital etc etc

Any have patches (the C55 patches dont work in C56) ??

Posted by: deanjen

uh...I think I actually kill this phone...?

After following all the step and the progress indicator completes...I can't turn the phone on.

Press the power buttom, and all the LEDs will just flash once and then off again.

Put it on a charger(at first I thought it is the battery drained out)...no response, either.

Any other idea...? Or is there anybody who can provide a link for A56i/A56 firmware so I can restore the phone back?

Posted by: deanjen

Well, now the phone is just dead...pressing the power button won't get me anywhere, and putting it on a charger then pressing the button won't work either.

software still detects the phone, but can't re-flash...it'll just kick the process right out.

Sigh...any idea?

Posted by: Rebel_lord

well with the first post ... dat's okay ... u just have to unlock it (not just flash it) and den upload the proper batter epproms ... umm maybe you're almost outta batteries ...

Posted by: deanjen

just PM you about the procedure and problems I have last night...

Seem to me that the phone is just "dead"... Now the software can recognize it as C56, and the unlocking process seems to be okay, but the flashing process isn't working at all...

And, can't power it on, and can't charge it(no battery indicator).

Anybody? As much as I didn't pay much for this guinea pig...still wanna try to make it work...:P

Just curious... did your phone start life as an A56i (NOT A56)? Learning from previous posts on this thread and other threads, it seems that the A56i is not compatible with the "no test point" method in Freia, which is what we are using with the A56>C56 conversion instructions. Could that have a bearing on the outcome of your phone?

So now your phone's being recognised as a C56, and was unlocked successfully, does that mean it isn't working because it didn't have the 5 EEPROM blocks containing battery info in the beginning of the process? If so, just load the original 5 blocks in the .eep file.

If your phone started life as an A56i, there would have been no need to do the conversion as the A56i contains almost all, if not every, feature that the C56 has.

Hey, if the phone is still under warranty and you still got the receipt, you could try your luck at doing a warranty claim at the dealer (though this suggestion throws all ethics out the window, and I for one won't want to do this).

cheers,
Mosquito_R

Posted by: deanjen

Oh, this is a Cingular A56...not the AT&T A56i.

now the problem is like this...any process will ask me to turn on the phone(just push the button, right?)... But now I can't even do that...

let along flashing the *.eep file(by the way, how do you flash this one? same as the *.fls file?)....

oh well...so frustrating...

Good!

I trust that you'd just momentarily tap the power button to get the process initiated, not holding it on until the phone powers up. From what I read in your posts, it probably just makes a flatulent sound and then dies.

For the EEPROM files, you use the EEPROM tools. Pls look at the earlier pages in this thread to see which version to get. Then load the 5 blocks from the .eep file and then use the "Save selected" method. This step is also mentioned in the conversion instructions.

Good luck!

Posted by: deanjen

okay, downloaded the EEPROM tool...UnRAR it...

But then...can't use it...

something with a COMDLG32.OCX that is not right...?

Any alternative way? Or any way to fix this?

Posted by: deanjen

okay, just tried the Freia again...now this time it can recognize the phone and can unlock it(or read it)...

Still, can't flash it. Try to flash it the first time, and it'll just give me the error message that it can't read some blocks.

Tried the 2nd time...now I can't even power it on...

I wonder if something else is wrong...cause when I was flashing couple nights ago...I left the computer there for flashing(it did take a while) but my little cousin then went into the room to use internet...maybe she did some nasty trick?:P

Any suggestion(other than court-martial my little-devil cousin?:P)?

Posted by: deanjen

Okay, got that COM.... files...but now one more file missing...DUH...

let's see how many updates I need from Microsoft...

Anybody ever tried this under Linux? :P

Posted by: deanjen

Okay, modification of my post...

The error happens when I wanna load the file...message is shown below:

Run-time error '6':
Overflow

I hope I don't have to use some program to re-write this program...any fix?

Posted by: mosquito_R

Chinese WindowsME is not the most popular operating system; could that be a liability in operating the EEPROM tools software?

There should be a total of 3 OCX files to install into your comp.

When doing stuff with phones on the comp, try not to use ANY OTHER applications, just to keep things safe. So, your little cousin could have done something perhaps...

At the way things are going for you, I'd still say that you should just load the EEPROM blocks into your phone first. Forget about flashing now...

Here's a rough outline of what you should do for the conversion.
1. Read A56 firmware (ie. copy it into the comp)
2. Take EEPROM blocks from A56 and save into a .eep file. (5 blocks with your battery info)
3. Write C56 firmware into A56 (flashing)
4. Unlock C56.
5. Write the 5 EEPROM blocks into your now converted phone.

To my understanding, you're already at Step 4. So, just deal with the EEPROM stuff first!

However, given your operating system, could that have caused some of your problems? Do you have another computer with perhaps XP? Or Win98?

Still scratching my head...

Mosquito_R

Posted by: deanjen

unfortunately both XP and WinME I have are chinese versions, and both just can't seemt o run the EEPROM TOol correctly(when I press the "load" buttom and try to load the *.eep file...it just give me a overflow error...on both my computers; let alone read anything from phone...

Posted by: deanjen

nah...it's okay...at least I learned about the cellphone... Not bad for a $20..(that's how much the phone has cost me).

Perhaps users of other Windows versions with different languages could share your experience here please? Since I know a fair bit of the information on this process is in Russian and Spanish, there are definitely people running non-English Windows who have converted their phones successfully.

Have you tried another version of the EEPROM tools?

nah...it's okay...at least I learned about the cellphone... Not bad for a $20..(that's how much the phone has cost me). [/QUOTE]

Yes, $20 is really no big deal (I had the same mentality in the beginning when I was fooling around with my first A56), but don't toss the phone away yet! I hope you'll be able to have another chance on another computer and/or with different software. This is really a good little phone, and after conversion, you'll love it that much more!

cheers,
Mosquito_R

Posted by: deanjen

Well, $20 for a learning experience is pretty good...besides, I'll have another A56 coming in soon for torture...:P

Maybe because I'm using COM cable instead of USB one...?

Posted by: mosquito_R

If you've read much earlier posts (and also do a search in the Siemens forum for data cable topics), there should be no difference between USB and serial cables, provided that they are all properly configured. IMO, the USB is a little easier to use, but that's mainly because I'm too lazy to fiddle around with settings and such and would prefer my computer to do it for me.

So you got another A56 incoming??? Lucky you...

cheers,

Okay, just receive a friend's A56 now and have the 2nd attempt...so far so good.

Posted by: deanjen

you know...i'm beginning to think that maybe there is something else wrong...

unlocking is okay with this new phone. Flashing is about 20%, then the port "closed"...some erasing errors.

attempt to try flashing again, no avail...and now the phone can't be turned on at all.

Honestly, can anybody help me restore those 2 phones? I'm willing to mail them to you and pay some bucks for those.

Posted by: mosquito_R

Hmmmm... sounds rather curious... the phone just poops out at 20%? Probably some other sort of software error...

I'm willing to help if you wanna mail your phones to Canada. Just PM me and we can sort out the details if you're interested.

Hello, everyone. I am new to HowardForums. I have been browsing this thread for a while. Wanting to do the update for my phone. I think I have the basic idea on how to update the phone. I would just like some EXACT instructions that I need to follow. Some instructions don’t mention the 5 blocks to copy and some don’t mention about the backing up of the A56 firmware. Can someone email me the *COMPLETE* instructions step by step on how to do it. I don't want to mess up. I have a serial cable for my phone. Also, I saw another thread about some resistor for the battery blowing up and then it can't detect the battery as charged anymore. Is this true? And how many people have had this problem? I only have this phone to use. Please email the complete info at riazg(at)hotmail(dot)com

Thanks.

Riazg: Please see your e-mail.
purplebooks: The A56i has all of the C56's functionality. You don't need the conversion.

I just got an A56 and i'd like to convert it to C56 but i need some help. I tried to download the rar file from allsiemens.com but the link doesn't work (and i have no idea of russian) so i'd appreciate if someone can mail me (knaexer@hotmail.com ; knaexer@netscape.net ; novalis@eu××××××××.com) all the stuff necesary to do the conversion (preferably with very clear and precise instruction to do it, you know, i dont wanna fry the phone that of soon).

Besides this I'd like to know what cable to buy (the serial or the USB) and how could i get the drivers.

Thanx beforehand

Hello everybody. I have just bought an A56 and surfing around I ended up here.

I want to convert my phone but have some questions about it.
1º HOW? can anyone tell me step by step how to do it please?? including what to download
2º HOW TO MAKE THE CONNECTION CABLE I'm in Argentina and I can't buy a connection cable. I want to make it.
3º LANGUAGE. I need to write SMS in Spanish with T9. Does the C56 soft available have this feature??
4º CAN I GO BACK from C56 to A56 in case something goes wrong?
5º WILL IT WORK THE SAME WITH MY PHONE COMPANY?
I’ll really appreciate your help.
THANK YOU

Get the USB cable. Do a SEARCH on this forum regarding M55 data cable and you'll see a whole load of info, esp regarding where to get drivers. Generally speaking the USB works like a charm. For the driver, you can also go to www.prolific.com.tw and get the PL-2303 "USB bridge" driver installer (or something like that).

Hey, you don't need to start a new thread to ask these same questions, it's just a waste of space for the forum.

Anyway...
1. Most of the info could be found in previous replies in this thread. Yes, it's a drag to read, but go through it slowly and your questions will be answered.
2. Please search for M55 data cable thread or something like that; it's been mentioned before. How come you can't buy a connection cable? How about eBay?
3. No worries about T9 Espanol. It's part of the FW.
4. Yes, the conversion is reversible. Just flash with A56 FW.
5. Yes... as long as the phone is unlocked.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for answering my questions. Now I'm sure I want to do the conversion.

It's pointless buying de data cable from here. It cost more buying the data cable in e-Bay (exchange, shiping and taxes) that buying a new c56 in Argentina (made in Argentina or Brazil). That is why I want to make one myself.

I'm still hoping someone can provide me the step-by-step proceadure (i just have to be SURE I won't fry my a56). Please send me an e-mail to mgil@iee.uns.edu.ar

Thanks
THANK AGAIN MOSQUITO!

Posted by: mosquito_R

Kael,

Tried to send you an e-mail but the message bounced. There are other phone forums elsewhere online (don't remember the name) that's in Spanish and deals with Siemens phones. If I remember correctly there was something mentioned there about building data cables. Perhaps some Spanish/South American HoFo members could step in and help?

In the very early pages in this thread there were also bits of translated material.

It really sucks that the exchange rate is not working in your favour...

Can somebody please send c56 flash? The original link on first page does not work, and the only flash is the c55 flash in the PDF file, which is not right. I have all the tools and have downloaded my phones (a56) flash and saved the 5 eeprom blocks. However, winsup32 fails at 62107 bytes everytime which I think is due to me using Freia to send c55 bootcore to phone instead of c56.

Thanks,
Scott

Posted by: mosquito_R

Dude, do a search! Webudo has hosted the c56 f/w. Just look back a few replies in this very same thread.

As far as winsup32 or Freia, I guess you should use one or the other. I followed the Freia route, and it's worked out well for me many, many times. There should be a winsup32 tutorial on siemens-java.com, so you might wanna go there and take a look at the exact procedure.

Try your best not to mix up C55 and C56 stuff; it'll save you a lot of grief.

Other than that, have fun!

Posted by: seturner4

Thanks, Mo' I found the links from Webudo. I think I am having XP problems. I have successfully read my A56 and saved the 5 blocks as *.eep. However, I cannot flash my A56 with C56 no matter which program I use, Winswup32, Freia, AllSiemens. Freia and Allsiemens get to writing the first block and after several minutes returns a message "invalid number of bytes written to com port". Winswup gets to writing 62107 and then stops with "unexpected termination of transmission" or something similar. I am using port 1, 9600,8,N,1 None on flow control(these are settings in XP). On Freia, I cannot choose slower than 57600.

Posted by: seturner4

Ok, I have finagled this enough so that using Freia 15, I successfully flashed with C56.fls file and then unlocked. I know I need to paste in the 5 original eeprom blocks. However, when I turn phone on, it STILL has cingular logos and is still an A56! The flashing seems to be going ok, but doesn't show up on phone. When I flash using Freia, I am selecting C55, bootcore, and choosing the C56.fls file Webudo is hosting. Help!

Did you put in the EEPROM blocks before turning the phone on?

Remember, you have to flash the phone with C56 fw, then put in the 5 blocks using EEPROM tools, then do unlocking. As for communication speed, why did you go so slow? I used 115200 as per instructions. When writing the flash, I chose "Firmware" in the Enter from where to start to write dialog box, again, as per instructions on the PDF.

Right now, just start from the top and try again. Maybe you want to use old Freia, or as it's called "AllSiemens". I've had no troubles working with that version.

Try again and let us know your results.

Posted by: seturner4

At last! I got it all done and working. Basically, I had to go use my wife's xp home laptop, as my xp pro pc would never connect properly. Thanks to all! and good luck.

i downloaded a flash file named "SIEMENS C56 LG1 V29 - 00800000.fls" from one of the links in this thread, but the file is over 8 megs in size. is this the correct flash file? can the phone's memory hold such a large file? can someone point me in the right direction for the flash file if this is not the correct one?

I did NOT use the eeprom tool, just Freia

it seems to work perfectly, I didn't use the eeprom tool because it simply didn't work.
(after I pressed de init button and then the on button in the phone, the status changed to Getting Info and finally 2 secs later to Stopped!)
I guess that the problem is my serial cable (not USB) without an external power source, (as it sais is needed in the readme file of de "quick eeprom features" by Skylord, the same author of the Eeprom tool).

I first try to do it under Win XP PRO (Spanish version) but Freia refused to work properly so I did the conversion under Win 98 SE (Spanish version).

I still can't enable DES because of this problem with SkyLord programs

IS ENABLING DES REALLY NECESARY TO BROWSE THE PHONE?

hope this info can help anyone

Thanks again mosquito

Congratulations, Kael!

OK, DES is not necessary - if your phone is plagued with Aero Check, then you might want it. Bad thing about DES is that it will lock the functions of your quick keys. e.g. if I programmed "2" to be the phone number of my girlfriend, I could not change that one-touch key to any other phone number. Same thing applies for functions, e.g. Hide ID, etc. However, I don't know if it is because of this that sometimes using the Siemens Data Suite I have problems connecting the computer with cable to phone.

So you got away without using the EEPROM tool? I find that curious... however, I did mention previously that I used the 5 EEPROM blocks from another phone and it worked.

That's all for now.

Ok, first I have read through all of the posts like 9 times, and d/led every program like 2 times, I am looking for the full c56 flash could someone pm me about it or send me a link or something. thx I have just the stock a56 so I know I should do other things first but can I just flash the full c56 and it will work?

Posted by: mosquito_R

If you've read through stuff like 9 times, then you should know that in addition to flashing with the C56 full flash you need to add your original EEPROM blocks and do unlocking, etc. If not it won't work!!!!

The full flash is located on the previous page, the C56.rar file. Extract it and you'll get the file. It should be like 8MB.

Posted by: c-tr0nad0r

I adapt the patches of 1mb to the C56 v.29, i must post it in this forum, in this moment im translating the info to the English language (because i speak spanish!!)

I have the info in spanish in www.celu-la.com

I have too:

Digital Clock
Phonebook with 250contacts
Call Chronometer

and other good patches

In the next days i wil open a thread called "Siemens C56 Tuning", wait for this

I am trying to convert my A56 phones to the C56. I have the 5 blocks saved using the eeprom tool, but when I try to load the C56 .fls file with freia, it ends with the error the the boot file is not accepted. I am using a serial cable. Any ideas what's wrong? Thanks

I found it. Configuation>patched boot fixed it.

Posted by: mosquito_R

Yeah, that's a very simple setting that could be easily overlooked. I forgot about it many times! Enjoy your conversion!

Posted by: labrat321

Well, I have successfully killed my phone. I followed the instructions, or at least I thought I did, and now just get a quick light flash and a buzzing sound when I try to turn it on. I tried to go back to the A56 with the same result. I copied the firmware from another A56 and loaded and still get the same result. I know others have had something similar happen but I can't get this thing going and don't know what to try next.
Thanks

Did you unlock the phone after flashing and importing the EEPROM blocks? If not, it might go buzz. Happened to me before. Try starting over from scratch again.

Hi Everybody , I need your help ....
I have a Fido A56 and I made the conversion a56-c56 , the problem is that the phone i think it is broken or somethig because it shut off constanstly and when i press the number one it shuts off with a beep .. so i need to reflash it with the a56 fido firmware & eeprom to take it to repair but i dont have them ..
Does anyone have them , Please anyone that can e mail it to me,,
Thank you very much for your help ,,
please send it to caojeda51@yahoo.com...

If I load my A65, will it clear the simlock as well and work with any sim?

Posted by: mosquito_R

caojeda, look at previous posts on this page before asking the same question. labrat321 had the same problem.

money69, the answer to your question is "I don't think so".

Posted by: caojeda

Hi mosquito_r but i think my problem is a hardware bug because te buzz problem after flashing is caused becasue of the IMEI number on the EEPROM blocks and the flash IMEI ,so when I unlock the phone with Freia that solves the buzz problem .
Then after 1 or 2 days or even sooner i get the wrong software display or when i press 1 it shuts off ,....
Then I unlock it again with Freia and it boot again,, But then again the same problem .,.. I `ve tried The CRC patch , copy eeprom form another phone,,, but always the same.
I think it is something related with a lose pin with the cpu unit in the pcb but i cant fix that , because i dont want to lose the manufacter warranty ...
So thats why i need the original FIDO a56 firmware and eeprom so i can take it to repair with fifo service center,,, I didn`t make a backup of the original firmware,, so please if anyone has them send it to
caojeda51@yahoo.com

THANKS!!!!

So what I ended up doing was to remove some numbers I haven't dialed in ages, and moved some more important ones to slots below #200.

Otherwise, the patch works great!

Hi everybody, two subjects in this post:

1) I have converted my A56 into C56 because the information I have found in this forum. Even when pictures in russian .PDF are pretty clear, I understand those people who still have doubts. For that reason I wrote a new .PDF instruction in english, which is even more clear that russian one. If you follow these steps exactly they appear, you'll have no problem at all. Please, don't e-mail me for this file, because I have dial-up conection to internet, and sending this file take some time than I don't have. What I want is that anybody who can host this file in web page or whatever, contact me.

2) I know there are people who take C56 (converted) memory, from 376Kb to 1016Kb. Can anybody tell me how? Or send a link to me? Or make any comment here? I can't ask to those I mentioned, because they want to be paid, and I'm not doing that because this information is free, I just don't have time to search over internet.

Best regards.

Posted by: mosquito_R

Maybe you want to ask webudo to host the Eng PDF file? I got no hosting space...

As for the expanded memory, you might want to ask around at forum.gsmhosting.com, or maybe people like c-tr0nad0r.

Posted by: c-tr0nad0r

I make it, any can host in a webpage the files for make it??

The files are 3:

1. LangPack reduced
2. T9 reduced
3. Patch for expand the memory

I have it in a file called extflex.rar

Posted by: rgodoy

Mosquito_r, I'll try in webudo for hosting the new eng .PDF file. One more thing, I saw your post above about patch for digital clock screensaver, how do apply that patch? what is exactly what you put there? Where can I find information about these patches? Thank you.

To c-tr0nad0r, how big is extflex.rar file? Would you e-mail it to me at raul_godoy@yahoo.com? That file is all I need to do memory expantion? Thanks to you too.

Posted by: c-tr0nad0r

Just download and read the readme.txt

http://www.geocities.com/giguaran20...ens/extflex.zip

Posted by: rgodoy

Sorry, I've other question. I can't connect my C56 with my pc, with Siemens Data Suite and other programs. It only works with Simoco. I have a serial data cable. Any idea? I downloades allmost all links I found in this thread.

Posted by: c-tr0nad0r

ok use Simoco and copy all the files of mobile with simoco

Later in the end of process upload this files to the phone

c-tr0nad0r is the patch king, so I think he's the best person to explain all the ins and outs of patches. However, to answer your question, the digital clock screensaver replaces the analog clock, so you'll see four huge digits displayed in 24h format when in screensaver mode. The digits are so huge that they pretty much take up the entire screen - this is no bad thing because it's very convenient when I'm using the phone in the car.

Anyway, go to the following site and download V_Klay. Also get Siemens Picture Changer 2 if you wanna customise your phone some more.
http://www.gsm-java.com/download/tools/

The patch works with V_Klay. just cut and paste the text into the blank area inside V_Klay. For some details on how to use V_Klay, read the Siemens Picture Changer 2 tutorial here:
http://www.gsm-java.com/tutorials/SPC/

Try it and have fun!

Also, the digital clock patch doesn't work with the expanded memory patch.

Posted by: rgodoy

mosquito_R thank you very much for your help. I'm downloading V-Klay and I'll try those patches later.

to anybady. I only can communicate my phone by Simoco. Data exchange and Siemens data suite don't work. An error message appears and nothing happens. Any idea of what's going on?

Thank you.

Hi everybody. I'm having this little problem... I just applied Digital Clock patch (and others), what is something I really like. I was happy because I got rid of that awful analogic clock... until today. Minutes pass by 2 in 2. For instance: I see in my phone 23:50, minute 50 es too long, so, next minute is 52. Clock didn't show me minute 51, so, each minute takes 2 minutes. Phone internal clock actually works fine. When I press a key, I can see minute 51, it isn't shown only in screensaver mode.
It is just me or anybody else has this problem???? Any idea??? It's easy to test, just take 2 min!!!
Thank you and best regards.

Posted by: mosquito_R

Ha ha, that's how it is! I suppose that in ANALOGUE clock mode, the resolution is so low that there is no need to show the time at every 1 min interval, thus the minute hand moves once every 2 min. I know this for a fact because I DID spend 2 minutes staring at the ANALOGUE clock. On my other A56>C56 with digital clock patch, it does skip every two minutes, just like you described there - I have the phone in the car placed above the digital clock in the car, and synchronised both the clock and the phone... and yes, it keeps time fine, but it's only strictly accurate every other minute...

It's a really simple conversion! However, I have a problem!!
Using the Siemens Data Suite, the Ringing Tone folder disappeared! I had to put the ringtones into the Bitmap file and I have to load the files into a ringtone from that folder... so I have to go in as if I was looking at a Bitmap on the phone. I wonder if this was my problem or did it just work that way...

Please help if you can.

Oh... and an early MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all!!!

Posted by: rgodoy

To everybody
I made some A56>C56 convertions in my phone and some friends'. Everything was fine until yesterday, when my phone suddenly turned off (and also my friend's).
In my case I was in that moment copying games into my phone with Simoco. It happened to me a couple of times. I don't know what's going on. I actually flashed my phone many times, could it be??? In my friend's phone, it happened when he was setting "Duration/charges > Charge settings".
I realized that a new "Debug" folder appears now in phone flexmem. Inside, I can see a .TXT file which content I don't understand. Which software can I use for diagnosis? Any idea of what's happening? I guess than some of you had this problem too!!!

Thank you.
PS: one phone has dig. clock patch, the other just C56 firmware.

WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? Remove your post; better yet, take your post elsewhere. It's stupid posts like this that degrade an otherwise good forum.

After reading 20 pages of posts w/out finding the solution I got tired so here's my problem to see if anybody can help me:
I was trying to ungrade my A56 using FREIA and a USB cable. I made the backup of the Firmware, the EEPROM, the Bootcore and something called 'Custom' as the instructions said. Then I proceed to write. I wrote the firmware (FW SIEMENS C56 LG1 V29 - 00800000.FLS) and the EEPROM (EEPROM SIEMENS C56 LG1 V29 - 00FA0000.FLS) successfully but when I went to write the Bootcore and the 'Custom' I dind't find any fls file to that so I decided (in a stupidly creative way) to use the same file of the EEPROM.. The Bootcore seem to write fine (although the progress indicator never moved) but when I tried to write the 'Custom' the phone stopped answering. After that I tried to restore my A56 but I can't coz the program verificates the power on (Waiting to power on the phone...).

PLEASE HELP!!!

Re: my previous post
That comment “What were you thinking?” was not directed at rgodoy, but at another newbie poster who posted a link for his site which was completely unrelated to cell phones. Looking at his profile I don’t even think he owns a GSM phone… Anyway, thanks to mods for removing his post. You can also remove mine since it no longer pertains to any discussion.

Re: rgodoy
The Debug folder appears if the something causes the phone to power off. While experimenting with my M55 version 10 patches, I’ve caused a few unexpected power-downs and each time there’s a text file in the Debug folder documenting what’s gone wrong. However, it’s all gibberish like you described… unless if you work for Siemens, that is.

If your phone now functions well, I guess you shouldn’t worry about it. My phone’s been flashed and re-flashed many times, and it’s still going strong.

Re: Novalis
Did you use EEPROM Tools as well?
According to the Russian PDF instructions, you had to save 5 EEPROM blocks pertaining to battery parameters and transfer them from your A56 into your converted C56. That way, your battery meter will function properly. You didn’t need to save your entire EEPROM via Freia.

The C56 firmware flash file contains the entire EEPROM already, so after writing it via Freia, write in the 5 EEPROM blocks using EEPROM Tools. After that, go back to Freia and unlock the phone, and it’ll be functional then.

So what to do now? Try flashing to C56 again, but possibly use “C55” as phone type in Freia, and as a guess, you might want to select “bootcore bug” or “patched bootcore” in the Configurations menu before you attempt flashing. If you didn’t have the 5 EEPROM blocks saved, I can possibly send you those blocks from one of the phones I’ve previously converted. Please post here and let us know your results.

Posted by: novalis

I tried to solve the problem using EEPROM tool ver. 2.21 but the program can not initialize the phone, it keeps scanning.
Desperate (coz I'm really desperate, I need the phone workin') searched in the web and read somewhere else that the problem is that my Bootcore is corrupt and the only solution is the Testpoint. Is that true?. If it is so, how can I do that?

Posted by: mosquito_R

Testpoint is a point in the circuit board of the phone where you'll probably have to cut before further continuing on. On some variants/versions of other Siemens phones (eg. C60/61), cutting the testpoint is the only way to unlock and do other modifications.

GSM-Forum's Siemens x55 sub-forum will be a good place to look and ask questions as to what you could do with the phone. Many others on that forum have encountered software problems during the conversion, etc.

Hope this helps...

Posted by: mosquito_R

My latest modification to the phone: new fonts for the digital clock! I first patched with the digiclock patch, then used SPC2 to change the font. Each number in the font is a number, so it's an easy, but time-consuming, modification. FYI, the numbers are each 22x41 pixels, while the colon is 13x41.

I have problems (like many of you) with C56 firmware in my A56 phone. We guess that phone hardware are the same is both models, so, it should work fine. My phone suddenly turns off sometimes when I press red button... Anyway, my question is: have anybody other C56 firmware version??? Other tham v.29?? It would be great to try another version.

Posted by: mosquito_R

Hmm... my phones have been working well... so far none of them have died!
Maybe a reflash with v.29?

I should have the AT&T Wireless (US) version 18 sitting somewhere. I'll dig it up. PM me your e-mail address.

cheers,
Mosquito_R

I need a copy of the C56 firmware for my Fido A56. If anyone has a copy of the firmware and the associated software required to flash it, please PM me or e-mail me @ jaymer (at) gmail.com and your generocity will be appriciated.

Thanks!

Man, i followed those instructions provided from the Russian PDF file from Sting and hosted on webundo (big thanks to you two!) and also followed tips from various other members and especially mosquito_R.

And..apparently my newbie powers turned off...and i successfully converted my A56 to C56.

A note on USB Data Cables: I got mine today from the Fido store next to a computer store (gee, that helps!) for $19.
Some other stores were selling exact same cable for $30.

--------------------

And now, my little problem.
I've configured my WAP and GPRS settings as mentionned by kekko, but i receive an "Incorrect CSD Profile" error.

I've tried setting the CDS Login and Pass to 'fido' 'fido' (without quotes)...same result.

Do I actually have to tamper some more with the CDS settings?

Here are my current WAP, HTTP and GPRS settings, if you were wondering:

WAP Parameters:

IP Address:
205.151.011.011

2nd address:
205.151.011.011

Port:
9201

Homepage:
wap.fido.ca

Linger time:
150sec

GPRS settings:

Deactivate GPRS: no
APN: wap.fido.ca
Login/pass: fido/fido

CSD settings:

Dial-up no.: <blank>
Call type: ISDN
Login/pass: <blank>

Also, not sure if this information helps, but in my
Setup>Connectivity:
Authentication is not checked; i was unsure if i needed to check it or not.

Thanks again for giving me the resources i needed to convert!

Thanks in advance for helping me with the GPRS.

Posted by: mosquito_R

Your settings look right as far as WAP and GPRS are concerned, but you shouldn't be doing anything in the CSD settings. I don't think you need to select Authentication either. The question is: Did you select the proper profile? For example, I have both Rogers and Fido WAP profiles in my phone, but I make sure I selected the Fido one before attempting to connect online. Maybe you wanna check this first. IMO it's very easy to overlook that last step, as stupid as it may sound.

Also, don't forget to go into your SMS profile and TURN OFF "SMS via GPRS". I reckon you'll be paying more if you send and receive via GPRS.

Play around with your phone a bit and let us know the results!

Posted by: ZeroXsk8brdr

Hrmm, for the Profiles, i have two available, one is the Fido WAP (was Rogers WAP, but editted to Fido) and another was Internet (which i now editted to be the same as the Fido WAP).

Since the two profiles are now the same, i might as well delete the Internet one? (it has exact same parameters).

---------------------

Not sure if this would have helped out not, but i went into Security and checked the barrings...and made sure Outgoing internat wasn't barred.

First of all a big thank you to mosquito for helping me with my C56. Always quick to answer my PMs.
Now I'm trying to flash my C56 with ver 29 because it has ver 19 right now. Does anyone still have that pdf file with instructions, it's no longer on the server.
Thanks in advance.

Posted by: renton

OK, I thought I was smart and I didn't need that PDF. I unlocked the phone using Freia then I flashed it with a debranded ver 29 firmware. At the end Freia said:

.....
.....
COMM_NormalWriteFlashBlock : sending block
COMM_NormalWriteFlashBlock : erasing block
COMM_NormalWriteFlashBlock : writing block
O.K.

Now when I turn it on lights flash shortly and that's it. Is it dead?
All I wanted to do is to upgrade the firmware from 19 to 29

Posted by: mosquito_R

Unlock the phone via Freia, then use EEPROM Tools to rewrite your 5 EEPROM blocks (in a .eep file). I just sent you that PDF.

Posted by: renton

I unlocked the phone and now it works hehe

Unlocking is not allowed to be discussed here as per forum rules.
Just as a heads-up, the A56i is different than A56; I suggest you visit the Marketplace for your unlocking needs for this model.

Hi all,
With all the help from this awesome forum, and its members, I converted 2 A56s to C56s about 6 months ago. I never had any problems till recently. Both my phones stopped powering up anymore and one of them simply vibrates for a sec when I try to power it. No software is recognizing the phones as they can't be powered. I fear they may be dead. Any help in this matter is highly appreciated. I really love all the features on C56. I would love to use that phone than any other phone. Thanks.

Hmmm... it sounds like the bad resistor problem that was mentioned a long long time ago on this forum... the phone basically stops working at that point and no amount of coaxing (e.g. switching batteries, waiting a long time before powering on again) would bring it back to life. I have personally experienced it on one of my A56's; that problem was taken care of by an over-the-counter exchange. I have a couple of friends who experienced the same problem too (one an A56, the other an M55), and basically the phone is pronounced dead at that point.

I share your same thoughts on the phone and I still use my A56>C56 much more than the other phones in my collection. I guess the only way for you now is to pick up a used C56 or A56 (not A56i as it's difficult to remove the lock) for cheap off eBay or from HoFo and continue your adventures. At least stuff like batteries, faceplates, etc can be carried over. From my experience, I don't know if it was the fact that I had a refurbished phone.

Thanks a lot for replying so fast. I really appreciate that. I am planning buy one more phone from ebay. But, I am still trying to save the other phones. Can you please send me the eeprom file in .eep format if possible. Thanks a lot.

Give me your e-mail address via PM and I'll send them. However I doubt your chances of reviving the phone would be high, because that's what I initially tried to do. I honestly think it's a hardware rather than software problem. Anyway, it'll still be worth a try, so send me a PM.

Mannn I love a56 as a phone and I would love if I can convert it to c56 .Would anyone in Toronot help me to do it,I would tip him jsut not to waste their time.Very nice addition of c56 features to C56. Looks like the risk of tossing the phone can be big .

I need some help. I have a c56 that is locked to one carrier, have the serial cable on the way and have downloaded the freia software. It seems that the c56 is not supported by the software, and the Siemens website does not have a firmware download for the c56 either! Can't even find a .fla file for the c56. Help this newbie pleez!

Posted by: mosquito_R

C56 is supported as a C55, and A56 = A55 in Freia. Siemens didn't have any sort of fw download for the x56 phones at all. Basically you can do unlocking with Freia and a cable; you don't need another firmware version. If you need another version, go to post #255.

anyone in toronto here that can help please
pm me thanks
i have a56 on fido looking to switch to rogers. so i need a56 unlocked and

yup, mine's still kicking

Well... I live in Argentina. Even when over here you can find the latest phones, they're too expensive. I still have my Siemens C56 (converted) as my one and only phone. I prefer use my money to by a car for example. Of course you need a lot more money for a car, but I prefer use that money for better stuff. People like me that have their old phones are called "delay cell phone", it might be funny, I have to say... but it's better to have an old phone and a new car (my case) that a new phone and no car or money in your pocket. That's what I think.
Regards.

Mine's back in action today after a long time of leaving it alone! I love this phone!

rogdoy, I understand your sentiment. I would rather save up money for other more important stuff too... though I'm living in Canada, what I earn isn't that great and therefore I should be more careful with my money.

I agree with completly. Besides, this is a great phone. It does everything I need, so, I have no need to change it.

I understand that in Canada, (same USA), everything is really expensive! Food, rent, and so on. Anyway, I want to ask you something: it is or it is not easy to find a job there?

Regards.

It all depends on where you live and what profession you are interested in. For example, oil and gas is very very hot in the province of Alberta (where I live), and if you're in that field, employment is easy to find. But if you're not (like me), then it's harder to find a job. On top of that, rent is getting very expensive here in Calgary due to lack of available rental units.

...So, it all depends on what sort of job you're interested in.

(hmm... this is getting off-topic... sorry, moderators!)

Please allow me to drag this thread kicking and screaming back on topic (though I'm enjoying the international banter, personally ;-]).

I inherited a Siemens phone stamped Cingular. The phone is in great condition and I plan to sell it with the charger, but I want to know exactly what I'm selling and what it is capable of, so before I resort to calling the AT&T store where I suspect I might not get the whole truth (they are probably not interested in helping me recycle an old phone) I thought I'd ask here. :-)

Physically it looks to be a C56, but boots up identifying itself as an A56. Cingular was bought by AT&T, and before service with this phone was discontinued the phone would boot up with AT&T's name. Now without service it boots up with Cingular's name, I presume as a default in the original Sim or the hardware perhaps? I have pulled the Sim card and the phone shows restricted (*not* 5 unbarred, darn it) so unless I get it unlocked (not sure I will try) the recipient will have to be an AT&T customer or get it unlocked themselves, correct?

At any rate, is it the innards of the phone that determines whether it's an A56 or a C56, or is it the Sim card, or is it something else? I had planned on *not* including the Sim card with the sale; am seeing this on most auctions where I looked so figured this is standard... so I wondered if somebody put their own Sim card from a nonfunctioning C56 would this would function as a C56, or did I read correctly somewhere that AT&T does not support C56 so this phone will only function as an A56? I'm not comfortable hacking a working unit and don't have have the right cable anywho, just wondering what this thing can do as is.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Posted by: mosquito_R

Wow... Never thought this thread would come back to life... but I'm glad it is. My C56 is still alive and well; I use it once in a while.

Props to you on at least attempting to recycle an old phone. It's the right thing to do.

To identify exactly which model it is, just press *#06#, and you'll get the IMEI of the phone. Press INFO and you'll see the info screen. Scroll down to the second last line and you'll see a line like: "Product: C56". This will tell you the exact model number.

As you could probably gather from reading this thread, the innards of the A56 and C56 are the same, and the outer cover and keypads are interchangable. Technically it's possible to make an A56 into a C56, and C56 into an A56, but this is only by firmware modification, and not SIM-dependent. A SIM will have the power to lock out access to certain menus, for example, SIM cards from Rogers or Fido here in Canada do not allow access to the call timer menu, I had to use an old AT&T card to get into that menu. However, SIM cards will not have the power to make a C56 function only as an A56, for example.

I'm not in the US and thus have no idea what exactly happened to the programming of the new AT&T SIMs since the rebranding from Cingular, but here's what I can offer for now: the "AT&T" tag you see when your phone was active was pretty much a "patched" logo sent over the air. With it inactive, the "Cingular" tag simply came from the phone's software. So, we can be pretty sure at this point that the phone is locked to Cingular SIM cards, or what became of them nowadays as the new AT&T network. Thus, it would be safe to say that the receipient would have to be an AT&T customer.

Perhaps you could borrow an active SIM from someone with a newer AT&T SIM card and try the phone out?

Thanks for the info, Mosquito! I do recycle, and usually use things up - I kept my old Motorola from Tracfone until forced to upgrade when TDMA was lost locally... my kids liked to make fun of my antique phone. At least I never had to worry about anybody stealing it, and it never accidentally made phone calls like this new one has... :-\

Re the Siemens, *#06# tells me it's an A56. Why did they put the C56 faceplate on an A56, I wonder? Oh well. I guess when I sell, I will note that it can be flashed to a C56 and the right faceplate will already be there. :-)

I know it works on the new AT&T network with the current Sim card; we simply let it lapse in late October 2007 because the plan my in-laws had signed up for was more expensive than other alternatives we have available now (and the surviving in-law is deaf and can't use this phone). I have deleted the call logs/contact logs/etc. Is there any compelling reason I should or should not include the current Sim card in the sale of this unit?

The faceplate is a cosmetic thing; some people like the C56 keys better but IMO the A56 keypad is much more user-friendly.

As for the SIM, it's toast already as your acct has been cancelled and a new user won't be able to take it over and use it as a new SIM. You can sell it with the SIM so that the new user will know exactly which SIM series works with it... if that matters at all. Otherwise, keep it as a souvenir or perhaps as a tool for unlocking (e.g. some unlocking procedures call for the use of an "other network" SIM - but I'm not going into further detail about this in here).

Thanks again, Mosquito. I know of the unlock you are describing, don't need to discuss it here as it's all over the web. :-) Maybe I'll make a tie tack or a brooch out of the old Sim.

Thanks again for all your help. Now to find this little thing a new home one way or another.
