two different tutorials for making tones for vx6000

i have made two different ringtone tutorials: sampling and midi.

sampling takes a recording (an mp3 in my tutorial) and turns it into a ringtone you upload over vzwpix.com. there are several "bugs" with this method. first off, the ringtone is only broadcasted over the internal ear speaker. that can be taken care of by putting the ringtones on with a date cable. the ringtones are also extremely distored and cannot handle hardly any bass what so ever. the method is very faulty, but i believe it teaches sampling well, and so i leave it up. the site address is http://tones.dulciprajna.net/howto.htm and sample tones made using this process are located here.

midi ringtones are synthesized, or in other words the computer/cellphone reads a sheet of music and mimics the sounds of it w/a self generated sound (not a recording). midi ringtones have several advantages to them that sampling does not. for one, they sound extremely loud, yet clear, even with bass (see the seinfeld for bass example, and breakdown for a loud example). they also take up hardly any room compared to a good quality sampled ringtone. therefore, they can be whole songs, or extremely large samples of a midi file. i offer my new midi ringtone tutorial @ http://miditones.dulciprajna.net/tutorial.htm. samples of this process can be located here. any and all suggestions/comments are welcomed here and via email through the site.

i have had alot of ppl ask if i could convert XXX.mp3 to a midi file for them. i would like to explain this here as to why this is not possible.....

a midi file is, for the most part, a score of music. in other words, its the notes for each individual part all written down. the computer/cellphone will read the music, see what is assigned to what part, and simulate the sounds of the insturments assigned to the parts. this is true sound synthesization. the sound your computer inturprets this written score of music to sound like will not be the exact same as what comes out of your phone.

mp3's or even wav files are not synthesized sound like a midi file is. mp3s are recordings of the sound. there is no sheet of music your computer is inturpretting. the computer/cellphone is given a data file that turns into the sound directly. for the most part, the computer and the cellphone will sound the same. the only difference is the speaker in which the sound is coming from.

there are programs out that will "convert" an mp3/wave file into a midi file, but they are not reliable. the program will "listen" to the recording you have in mp3/wave format, and try to write out a sheet of music that corresponds to the sounds it hears. this is never accurate. the programs are really made for one sound playing over time. not multiple sounds working at the same time.

anyhow. hope this helps to explain some of the difference between midi and mp3/wave files...
