questions for samsung i600 users

I'm thinking about getting the i600, but had questions I'm hoping someone will answer. I currently use a IPAQ H1910 and a Samsung A310 phone. My questions:

Can I use the same software that I've been using on the 1910 or is the software choice limited. For example, I've been using Agenda Fusion.
Also, what do you feel would be must have apps.

Any comments on security (password) programs like ewallet or
similar. Which is the best?

Is there a built in mp3 or wav player?

Any comments about people you are calling having trouble hearing you. I'll be using it more as a phone than PDA.

Would I be able to use it with a GPS?

Thank you

- You can NOT run your PPC software on Smartphone. Go to www.smartphone.net or www.handango.com to see what software is available for the Smartphone OS (2002).

- Must apps...totally subjective....just browse the above mentoined sites to see what's out there.

- For the Smartphone OS you can buy either eWallet or CodeWallet. I am using eWallet Pro and like it a lot. CodeWallet users also seem to be happy.

- Yes, built-in Windows Media Player. A bit limited in functionality, but you can buy a 3rd party player.

- If you're using it more as a phone than a PDA, then the i600 will fit that bill nicely. It's a phone first, PDA second. I have seen NO complaints about call clarity.

- It has built-in "GPS" for E911, but I do not know of any killer-app that uses GPS, such as mapping software. I don't think the E911 GPS locations are reported back to the phone.

- I like the i600 a lot, but it does have a few annoying bugs, most noticeably the Caller ID bug. Do some searching, and you'll find plenty of info on this.

Thanks for the info.

As for the caller ID problem. Is the problem just with the name?
In other words, does it still show the phone number of the caller even if it hasn't found their name in my phone contact list yet?

Correct, it is a problem isolated only to number to name ID, number always shows up.

That is true for the internal display, but my external display has some very peculiar behavior. On my phone, if I get a call from someone NOT in my contact list, it will display the number. So far so good. But if someone calls that IS in my contact list, it will NOT show the number, but instead wait until the name match has been made and then show the name. Now hold on here...this makes no sense you say. And indeed, it does not. If it already knows that the number is in my contact list...it must have already found that contact right? And so why would it take so long to fetch the name? Beats me. Can't figure this out. I think there was some first class stupidity at work here.

It is not that it takes it so long to retrieve the name. MS programmers are doing things in a convoluted way.

I don't think anyone knows for sure if it's a MS programming issue.

The NON-FLIP MS Smartphones (like the SPV series) don't have this problem.

As far as the delay in the caller ID, does anyone use the Photo Contact software where you it displays a picture of the person calling? If so, is this delayed as well?

I've been using Photo Contacts 2.0 for about a month now, and can say definitively that it provides an incremental improvement at best, depending upon the number of contacts (or more likely, number of stored numbers) in your phone's contact database. If you've over a couple hundred contacts, you will not notice any improvement using this program. And, the external LCD is not supported, so you will not see anything on the LCD other than a ringing phone icon. The only names that will be correctly displayed are those at the very front of the alphabet.

If you're looking to this program solely to solve caller ID woes, don't waste your money.

I have around 800 contacts, and at most I have to wait is 2 seconds for someone in the end of alphabet list to appear, with picture too.

I just saw on the website for Photo Contacts that they have fixed the caller ID bug for the i600.

http://www.pocketx.net/smartphone/photocontacts.html

So those of you who have not already done so, may be able to upgrade to the new release.

That's worked for some, but there are others with lots of contacts where no software has fixed it completely.
