Wired headset in P900 2.5mm jack?

The several wired headsets I own with 2.5mm jacks don't work correctly when plugged into the 2.5mm jack on my P900. I can hear the other party, but they can't hear me.

Is there something I'm missing about how this jack works? Does it only work with the stereo combo thing Sony includes in the package?

First thing to check is if you are using a headset that has a 4 barrel plug on the end (not 3 barrels). If you are trying to use a headset with only 3 barrels on the plug it will not work (and you are most likely shorting out the mic connection in the phone when you are trying to use this). If you don't know what I mean, look at the headset (plug) that came with your P900 and you will see it has 4 barrels on it.

At the bottom of this pic you can see the difference between the two configurations even though one is a 3.5mm plug.

Are there commercially available wired headsets that have 4 barrels on their connectors? I don't think I've seen any.

What do other folks do for wired headsets? Stick with the one that SE provides? Use a 2.5mm to Ericsson-style adapter?
