Got the 8600, have a few questions (please assist!)

Thanks a lot for helping me, if anybody can. I have the 8600 and am generally happy with it so far but want to make sure of a few things before the 15 day period is up to return it. So, if anybody knows the answer to these, I'd appreciate it.

Just for clarification, I upgraded over an old Audiovox (old, green screen, vertical, not flip) and had the numbers transferred to this new one. So, they are all under "HOME" on someone's name.

1. How do I do speed dial if I assign someone a number?

2. OKAY...I downloaded a ring and assigned it as the one I chose (it has the X in the check box). Yet, when people call, sometimes I get a normal ring (like a home phone). Further, I can't find this normal, ordinary ring anywhere within the menu. I want this ring to be for everybody. Does this have something to do with the numbers being home or cell? I called from an unlisted home number that is in my phone book but comes up as restricted (normally happens) and got the downloaded ring. When I get a call from a cell phone in my phone book I get the normal ring. Help?

3. When the phone is closed, and i push the buttons on the left to light up the LCD, they are occasionally unresponsive, and need to be pushed multiple times. Anything to this? Sometimes I have to push and hold for a bit.

4. Is it bad to charge the phone every night? I like to plug it in each night...but should I let the battery go low first? I don't like being somewhere with a low battery, that is, making it be low so I can charge it when I get home. Can I charge it nightly?

Thanks SOO much for your help.

follow up: so i deleted one of the numbers, put it back in, and had the person call me -- i got the downloaded ring, not the generic one. what am i to do to make the downloaded ring the complete default for all in my phone book? i also want to know where this generic ring is. eek. again, thanks for the help.

Also, when I push and hold * to turn on etiquette mode, it goes turns the phone on vibrate (which is what I want) even though the little icon is the bell with the slash through it. is etiquette mode for vibrate or silent?

I'll try to help you best I can.
My answers come purely from trial and error.
I found the manual to be quite useless.

1. To assign speed dial, first the # must be programmed into your phone.
click MENU and go to phonebook
click SPEEDDIAL and it will give you 20 empty spots
choose one, click OK
then you'll see SELECT GROUP. if you didn't bother changing type (my recommendation is to not assign groups) the default should be etc.. click OK
Search for the name and the phone number you want to assign and click OK

2. Can't help you on this one. Didn't download a ring and probably never will. No need to give the cell companies more money.

3. This is normal.

4. Due to the lithium batteries of today, you can charge it as much as you want. These batteries along with NIMH have no 'memory affect' as the old NICD did. However, I like to run down the battery till its dead at least once every 2 months.

As for the generic ring in your f/u.. ??? sorry can't help.

Now go out and have a beer..

From what I can see, etiquette mode is when you need to silence all your phone's tone settings and sounds.
It will vibrate instead. you might have noticed also that the phone tones have been turned off.
This is especially useful when I need to quickly turn off all noises from my phone due to a meeting, but still allowing me to know when a call comes in due to the ring now being vibrate only.

I guess its time for me to have a beer..

cellmonster...thank you VERY much for your help. i'm glad to know that the buttons on the outside of the LCD is not an issue -- i didnt want to have to return this phone, as i like it.

with regard to the ring tone, maybe this will give you a little more idea to my troubles: the downloaded tone is the same as selecting a tone like "salsa" or "Washington post" from the list it gives you. it has nothing to do with the download, but rather, the selected ring. for some reason, some calls come in with a very generic ringm like a household phone...and i can't find this ring anywhere in the menu. when i had "salsa" selected, it would not ring with salsa all the time, but rather with this generic ring. thus the same is true for the downloaded ring. anybody?

thanks!

I bet this is because the outside vol buttons are for adjusting vol; so if it is already maxed, it won't repsond. I get mine to work 100% of the time by pushing the 'down' vol button: now it responds because it is making an adjustment that it can make, and of course, it shows you that it is responding by lighting up.

... I think...

I'm at ends with that question too as it never happens to me.

But, I do have a possible explaination. Hope this may solve your provlem.

I found that with this AV phone, you must be very precise when activating certain features.
For instances, when you change ringing tones for all calls, excluding those you have assigned a specific ringer, highlight the tone you want and CLICK OK so that the phone can indicate changes saved.
I find at times, I forget to click OK when increasing or decreasing ringer volumes (ie ringer volume via side buttons) and then closing it thinking it has saved my new setting.
Actual fact it did not as I never confirmed the change.

Short cut .. MENU - 5 - 1 - 1 - 1 then choose the ringer, click OK

Hope this works..
If it does.. CHEERS

EDIT.. That ring you find may be due to a distinctive ring due to a specific environment ie. roam alert, fade alert, connect alert.

You can find it here.. MENU - 5 - 1 - 4 - (2, 3, 4, or 5)
Play with these settings.
If you are in the US, I've read some threads regarding that the phone jumps to ROAM quite a bit, thus the possibility for this distinctive ring.

Do a search regarding ROAM SETTING for this phone.
Your answer may lie there.

beer time..

I believe your phone not playing your default ring tone is an issue with transfering over your phone book...

I have seen a couple post about people having this random default ringtone. This has been attributed to transfering the phone book over. this seems to be the problem since you changed one of them already. unforunately i think you will have to re input your numbers or i think at least you have to define a specific ringer to all teh names that don't ring prperly

Posted by: weekapaugz

eh, i have no qualms with switching the numbers. they all transferred as home so I have to move them to cell in order to text them anyway. thanks for all of the help...i'm pretty sure i'll keep the phone. great rate price from verizon too.

EXCELLENT.

Good to know..
I had to re-enter all my info manually, thus no strange beeping.

Finished 2 beers.. now to have 2 more..

For the issue of getting only the generic ring tone this might help. Make sure the number in the phone book is a 10 digit number. Ive had no problems with my ring tones and I have about 5 - 6 of them set.

As far as the volume buttons and the lights, my girlfriend has the 8600 and I have the 8900. They both do the same thing that your phone is doing. I was bothered by this too and decided to investigate. What I found was that if the phone has just been closed and you push the volume button it will light with one press. Once the lights have been turned on via the volume buttons once then you will either have to hold down one of the volume buttons or open and close the phone again. The only reason that I could come up with as to why these phones do this is to save on battery life just in case you have your phone in your pocket and the volume buttons get pressed over and over again. I may be wrong, but it's the only thing that makes sense to me.
