Im thinkin of gettin an X70, in fact I ordered one weeks ago, but I've heard mixed reviews. Would you say it's better than a Samsung E700, people who own them??

Posted by: markogin

I have never used a samsung E700, which I believe doesn't have blurtooth and 3 bands

Posted by: nickdrinkwater

I don't need 3 bands, I'm not gonna use bluetooth much if at all. It's just that looking at opinions, the x70 seems to be a disappointing phone, and for £200 quid I want the best phone I can get.

Posted by: markogin

Consider this

every phone has pros and cons, no perfect phone! Especially brand new ones that might have some bugs.

I have both the Samsung E715 (not the 700... since I'm in the US) and the Pan X70... I gotta say I like the 715 better than the X70... they're almost the exact same size/weight... the 715's camera is WAY better than the x70...

The overall feel of the 715 is just better than the x70... the only pro the x70 have over the 715 is the bluetooth, nice IR, large screen (but it takes crappy pictures) and the better keypad...

But then... these are only my personal prefrences... so it might not apply to you...

I'd say those are some pretty key features and advantages. Add in solid RF and most would consider the X70 a solid phone based on your review.

Thanks for a helpful post. As I'm not too bothered about bluetooth (I am getting the phone for leisure, i'm only 16) it is not really a key feature for me.

I've heard that the SMS is poor on the x70, and I use this alot on my phone.

I know the x70 is a solid phone, but I want more than 'solid' when I am spending this much. I want something something a bit special.

Since you're still young and impressionable I'll go easy on you...

Rather than post some vague request for X70 pros you should list what you're looking for in a 'special' phone and your situation. You don't need multi-band or bluetooth, yet those are generally the features that differentiate a phone as 'special' nowadays. They all make and receive calls and most can take crap photos.

Otherwise, it sounds like you're convinced the X70 is not the phone for you despite the 'solid' feedback posted, so buy the Samsung and be done with it.

Well thanks for 'going easy on me'. I suppose if you had bothered to read the thread you would have seen I didn't actually start it, and didn't ask for a list of pros. I asked if the x70 was better than the E700, and the earlier post was the one that helped me answer that question.

To be honest, I don't want to spend alot of money on a phone that can't do the simple things well, I.e write a text message. And since I've already said I don't need Bluetooth, that feature is irrelevant.

I do appreciate the feedback. That's what i thanked Cyggie for a helpful post you see.

The SMS on the X70 is fine. Its responsive and easy to use. Think the only disadvantage for some people is that the inbox lists the messages by first line of the message and not the sender. Personally I don't think this is much of a problem as I read all my messages any way.

sound like anti-X70 ^^" dun be so biased on any of them, each of them got pros n cons, only up to what u r looking for...

So messages are sorted by the first word? Doesn't sound very user friendly.

I heard that it takes about 7 or 8 button presses to get to the compose SMS screen, and then several more to send it. Also, that it's a pain to add words to the dictionary when using predictive text (which I use all the time).

Could you confirm whether this is correct? It's little things like these that are swaying me towards the Samsung at the moment.

for sorting by first word, it's in outbox only, till now still dun understand WHY panasonic doing this...

for composing sms
Menu->Right->Enter->Enter
4 pressing only wat, where u heard of 7 or 8?

to send
OK->[Input number]->Send
OK->Phonebook->SELECT contact->Send
normal behavior to me...

to add words to dictionary, just diff way of doing only. no matter how, u still need to access "abc" mode, even in nokia, just nokia will prompt u where panasonic u hv to diy. after input the word, press "#" for a space n the word is saved.

Thanks for the info. I saw it on some review site, they were obviously wrong.

both have good/excellent rf...

x70 has crippled bluetooth to my knowledge only headset functions no data functions.

the x70 has a better irda port (not crippled)

e715/700 has a crippled irda.

size, build and call quality about the same IMO.

e715 has better cam and takes big pics640X480.. x70 small thumb nails pretty much... (not to be mean but true...like a t616, 7250 or old gd88)

x70 has a nice big screen..

don't know much about the java on both...

overall i'd go with the sammie... cuz it's the best out their for the price and in terms of a camera phone the best in quality next to the gx-22

also 9mb (e715)versus 4mb(x70)

internal antenna versus external

To create an SMS, I tap:

Menu, 6, 5, 2

That's 4 keystrokes, without using the "scroll" function on the menu button.

Anyone who can get it down to less than 4 keystrokes gets a kiss!

What is crippled on the samsung IR?

Posted by: shaolinmonk

most nokias (except smart phones) and sammies and a few others cripple the infared port.

meaning you can't share pics and ringtones from phone to phone only through pc to phone.

SE and siemens in general allow data to be transfered from phone to phone unless the item is copyrighted by them.

i think peopel have found a way to get x70 to work for data but i'm not sure.

Text messaging on the X70 is fine, 4 keys to compose (or selection key twice to reply to a message you are reading), 4 to get to where you add number from phone book (sounds a lot, but it's the selection key 3 times, then the left softkey). When you are at the phonebook entry, it's selection key 3 times again.

Most Samsungs (including, I think, the E700) have a button in the middle of the arrows, like the selection key on the X70, but is a shortcut to the WAP browser - counter-intuitaive and what I think ruins what would otherwise be a perfectly good brand of phone.

Picture quality is reasonable on X70s (some have more problems with low light than most cameras, but you are never going to get brilliant low-light photos with camera phones)

The sound is good quality, speakerphone works ok.

Outer screen has multiple backlight colours (about 9/10 I think, rather than the 3 on the Gx8x) and I love the analogue clock on the outer screen (this can be turned into a digital clock or turned off if you prefer)

Same applies to Panasonic. Downloaded ringtones from other places can also have copy-protection that the X70 and Dx8x will respect.

Does the x70 automatically connect calls to a bluetooth handsfree, or do you connect each call manually to the bluetooth handsfree? I have thought about picking one up for my wife but don't want it if it won't automatically connect to either of our bluetooth car kits.

The following is my experience with my third-party (non-Panasonic) BT set. Those with original Panasonic BT headset please post their experience here too.

Assuming that the BT headset and handset had been previously paired, and BT headset had been switched on prior to call ...

Incoming call: X70 rings and BT Headset chimes, with pre-set melody. You press a button on the BT headset and it connects, and you can start talking immediately.

Outgoing call (1) : voice dialing: you have preset a voice dial on the X70. You can do voice dial by pressing a button on the BT headset; you hear a double-beep which means "speak now"; you say the name of the party you want to call, and the X70 recognises and connects letting you speak to the called party.

Outgoing call (2): you dial the called party's number on your X70 keypad. You still need to activate your BT headset by pressing a button, and you can only do so once the called party picks up, in order to continue your conversation on the BT headset.

Does this help?

That helps somewhat. I was wondering what happened if it was paired with, say, a sony ericsson bluetooth car kit. Those, once paired and connected, stay paired with my v600 and Nokia bluetooth phones. So, I was hoping that the x70 did likewise.

I've sent data, not recieved it. Tried with a SE T610.

Posted by: shaolinmonk

i think it does just many people were having a hard time getting the data part to work but i'm still not 100% sure

No problem in sending data or connecting to internet with bluetooth. I use it daily with my Palm T3 and it works perfectly. You can also send images and sounds or other files that you have saved in your phone with bluetooth or IR (not the ones you downloaded via wap because they are "copy protected").
If you want to receive a file in your phone you need to activate "receive object" in the connection menu and you can receive any object with bluetooh or IR.
BT and IR are fully functional for data management.

I'm completely happy with this phone now that I've figured out how to transfer files to/from the phone via BT. The key is this: the X70 has to be discovered and active, not just paired...at least with my particular BT adapter. When I exit my BT neighborhood, even though the phone is paired it won't communicate. Once I enter BT neighborhood again, the discovery process initiates and I'm able to transfer files. Weird, but hey- it works. :-)

Where are you in Italy?

I got to play around with an x-88.

Some cool things:
Speaker Phone

You could use wav files for alerts and ringers (but the quality wasn't that good)

when you press the + key and up or down you get a list of countries and it will fill in the appropriate country code for you

Posted by: lost_rebel

Sync ML is really cool and I love the Bluetooth functions. I use it frequently for Personal handsfree, carkit and data connectivity with my laptop.

The x70 has also the list of countries. Just hold "0" til it becomes a +, then, press up or down

works on gd87 as well, bet it works on some older Pana gsm mobiles too!
