Pros and Cons of SCP-5000

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I was wondering what the pros and cons are to this phone other than battery life. How is Rx and Tx quality? Signal clarity? Ease of switching from Analog to Digital? Etc etc.... I am currently with Telus and would like to upgrade my phone, I was wondering if I should hold off and wait for the release of the new samsung or Motorola.

Please read some of the other posts.

Among poor battery life, the 5000 apparently goes into ANALOG much sooner than required. I have heard that the 5000 is literally incapable of holding onto a fringe signal on Telus. The DUAL MODE only on the 5000 can be a severe drawback, but should be worse in the West as much of Telus' network in the West is comprised of 800MHz sites, in which, the 5000 does not support. The screen is said to be horrid, much worse in sunlight. I'm sure there are others. No wonder I put off purchasing the 5000.

Hope this does sour you too much

Just returned mine. Not worth the cash, the battery life was so bad I almost lost my job because the phone died at 3pm.

People should know the 5000 really isn't worthy enough to handle everyday usage patterns. All the things I've heard concerning the battery life, the 5000 should be petitely used. Pretty ironic considering the $500 price tag that hangs on it. Amazing how some people will sacrifice usability/performance for a few features.

You may want to get the Audiovox 8100 for tempory use as it is now officially available for monthly plans for $150 Cdn before tax.

The in building reception stinks too! At Yonge and Bloor (Toronto downtown) last week, a 4500 had better in building reception than my 5000 and the 5000 went into analogue too much and calls went to voicemail while the person who was standing beside me with the 4500 had digital and all calls rang through.

Well, I ectually kinda like this phone.
I know the battery life really really sucks!!! but I guess that's all Sanyo can do for smaller phones.

What I like about this phone is that it looke cool, Colour screen, and some features. you know .. new technology, and new stuff that looks cool. Well.. about 2 years from now this phone will be a huge toy.
And one thing I love this phone is the SMS folders. I used to live in Korea, and in Korea, we dont usually use phones for calling somebody, We useually use it for Messaging people, Just Like ICQ (almost 97% of people own Cell phones in Korea.. even Elementry 3 greaders.). I am hoping that Phone.com browser can hav the real internet soon, not like useless textbased pages which is still called WEBBROWSER in NorthAmerica.

The sound quality isnt that impressive, It's just like
other sanyo phones like Sanyo 4000, although, Signal quality is preety ok.

I would like to say, If you want some thing for business, I dont recommend to buy htis phone, I recommend you to buy some big and featured phones such as nokia phones or settlight phones.
But if u are like me, just to use it for normal life, and hav fun, look cool with a phone, If you want some changes on you, want to try the new phone technology, It's good chance to buy this phone and try it.

It depends on ppl, but I am ectually like this phone~

I recommend you read some of the other posts, with a grain of salt! You should go and see the phone yourself!

I've had mine for a while now and love it. I don't have the jump to analog problems that people complain about, nor do I have a battery issue, since I have the extended battery, on the contrary, I only charge my phone every other day now! As far as the phone under sunlight, the previous posts are wrong, they screen gets much easier to read under sunlight. It's not a backlit display, it's a reflective screen, so it gets better as the light quantity gets greater. People say that the screen is too dim, but i don't think it's dim, it's not as bright as an active-matrix LCD, but it also doesn't eat power like an Active Matrix display.

Overall, I think the price is steep, but it's a nice phone. If you are a wap user, it's a great phone, I can see up to 11 lines on my phone, plus it shows graphics, which most sprint phones in the US can not do at this time!

Well you have an extended battery so your post is a grain of salt to us in Canada, where the extended battery is not for sale yet and for a business person to lose use of their phone at noon on a busy day is b*******!

This type of handset really does a number on people who love "toys", yet their daily schedule or whatever requires them to be on their toy for most of the day. Won't work for full time people with this part time handset Hmmm, $500 for a "leisure toy". Pretty frightning I say.

You are correct.

I've noticed that everyone on this forum looks at the silly signal indicator that the 5000 has! If you really want to know how strong the signal and bettery strength are, hook the phone up to a laptop, and use the diagnostic utilities that sprint provides. I noticed that when my battery is at 50%, the phone shows only one solid bar on the battery!

The same holds true for the signal indicator!

Sam!
