Well the flip mode doesn't work well on my phone.

(1) If flip it open, "Start VR" appears then "Say a Name or Command". No matter what I say, in 2 seconds it displays "ERROR Exiting VR Try again".

(2) From the initial page, if I hold down SEND, first a list of my last calls shows up. If I continue to hold down SEND, the "Start VR" shows up. Then, "Say a Name or Command" appears (just like in (1)) but then the voice says "Main Menu". Now VR works.

WTF?

Last week, I had what may be a related failure. Using the SEND key method, it no longer recognized any voice tags. I checked them and they replayed correctly. Then I put in a new voice tag for the first entry and all the others were now recognized.

WTF.

Wait wait, In case (1) above, if I quickly press either the left function key or SEND, I get the "Main Menu" vocal prompt along with the text "Say Name or Command"

WTF?

Sorry petec, I really don't know what's up with your phone.
If you do a search, you'll see that there has been some problems with other cell phones regarding VR.
From what I read, it seems that it is just the bad one of the bunch??
They sent it in to be repaired / replaced and it was fine (not 100% perfect) after that.
Personally, I would rather have it replaced but dreams don't necessarily come true.. sigh...

time to drown myself in what loves me..

So, if flip is enabled, I should be able to just "Say name or command" without having to push a button is that right?

I may be willing to live with it working that way.

If it forgets the names again, I may see about re-version/repair/replace.

Now for a new update. After what, 3 days, the phone now works when flipped open. I get the voice prompt "Main Menu" which the phone seems to need to do a voice dial.

But wait, it recognizes the name I say and indicates "Calling" but the call never goes through.

I try dialing using the keypad. Again it indicates "Calling" but the call never goes through.

I try *228. "Calling OTSA????" or something but again, the call never goes through so I end it. "reprogramming failed"

Power down the phone then power it up. Same problems.

Remove battery, reinstall, flip open, back to the old problem of no voice prompt to "Main Menu" and 2 seconds until "Error exiting, pleas retry".

So it is back to Flip open and press left function key or SEND. Then I get the voice prompt, "Main Menu" but it doesn't recognize any voice tags. I just retrain one voice tag and the rest are back. Still need to press left function key or SEND after flip up to get the voice dial prompt.

Why can't software engineers check their code? Why don't their managers get fired for letting this out the door?

I'm having so many issues with the voice features on the phone that I gave up.

Well, I don't want to give up. I spent 25 years managing software pukes that tried to ship crap like this.

Everytime I found a real software person, I kicked the puke out and put the real programmer in charge. You only have to do this two or three times and the pukes turn into real programmers.

Or they go to work for Microsoft.

Start lobbying Audiovox for a software fix then.

What kind of company has to be lobbied to do the job right. A good company would have fixed the problem. Why do the customers have to be the testers. People get paid to test software. Will Audiovox pay us?

Reminds me of Detroit autos in the 70's. "They don't build cars in Detroit, they just start them there. They are finished at the dealer as the buyer keeps finding problems." That opened the door for imports and Detroit's life has never been the same.

I gave my wife my LG4400. It is far superior to the 8600. VR never gives me "try another name as this is similar to an existing name". The 8600 does all the time. (Either my voice or my wife's using the same phone book).

4400 has another button the side to start a VR call.

I haven't hit a software bug in the 4400 yet.

I never know what this 8600 is going to do.

Sad, it had real potential but poor result.

Agreed petec, I can't understand a company who would do this either.

It's like Audiovox rushed to meet a deadline.

I feel bad for your problems I know it sucks but what would you have them do...every product line will have a few faulty ones shipped out...my vr works fantastic on the same phone..not a problem yet...and I'm sure a million others do too...ford and other motor companies will call back a faulty shipment after the death toll reaches unacceptable levels...im sure audiovox would too if the phone was causing a good percentage of users grief...but unfortunately ur almost singled out here. i would do what most of us do when we purchase a faulty product...go back to the store and demand either a refund or a replacement....if this is not possible then you should reconsider your dealer

Posted by: yanaho

also sorry i hope that didnt come across ignorant or anything having problems with something you've bought usually sucks ***

I know the phone has option to completely erase all vr settings and recorded voices...have you tried turning all the vr options off...erasing all voices unplugging the battery etc and then starting over?

Basically I don't feel like debugging someone else's SW problems. (I must admit that I can't "prove" it is SW but after 25+ years in exactly this kind of business, one develops a 6th sense about stuff like this.)

Now, if I flip it open and it says "Error", I just hold down SEND for 4+ Seconds.
If it doesn't recognize any voice tags, then I just retrain one (any one) and all the rest come back.
Next time I have a half hour and am near a Verizon store, I'll see if they have a new version of the SW.

The battery did fall off a few days ago. As I recall, VR on flip worked for a few trys after that. Then it stopped working.
