Mobile Office Kit for CDM8600

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Daddy0h

Hi!

According to the Audiovox web site the MOK8600 is the unit to get; they claim that it also works with the CDM8500

1) Does that mean that we can purchase a unit that works with the CDM8300 or CDM8500? Or should we just stick to looking for the MOK8600?

I've not been able to find too many (1 at most) MOK8600's; but I have found quite a lot of units for either the CDM8300 or CDM8500 or both.

The description of the units I have found say that they do not sync w/ Outlook...

2) What does the MOK sync up with?

TIA!

I just purchased the Data to go kit from Bell Mobility which they sell instead of the MOK8600 and it allows you to connect your PC to the internet via your cell phone. No more than that. There is software from Audiovox that allows you to save you phone numbers but I can not find it.

MOK8600 supplier
Here is the best price *I* could find for the MOK8600
(incl software) about $60

http://www.canyonriver.com/online/o...Code=AUDCDM8600

http://www.canyonriver.com/online

I just ordered using 3 day shipping, so I will let you no next week.

---------------------------------------
If ya want just the cable go to ebay
search for 8600 data..........
can usually find the cable for $15-20
I bought a MOK for the 8300/8500.
(cable works with the 8600), but not the phone book software......
Most seem to be the Verizon packaging.

Then use gagin , bitpim, voxindex, etc for the editing.......

Does anyone know how the phone book manager works with 8600?

I found the MOK8600 kit at CarTronics for $44.88 - but if the phone book software doesn't work not sure it's worth it.

Here's a link to the MOK8600:

http://www.accessories4audiovox.com...tml?SKU=MOK8600

If anyone has any experience with this let me know.

The phone book manager from the MOK8600 works fine with the 8600 phone......

Hi faastmaan

This is my first post here. I ordered the MOK for the Audiovox 8600 from the link that you provided. It arrived yesterday and I installed the software on my Gateway 200x with XP Pro. However, when I connect the phone through the USB port and then run the Quicklink Mobile program, the software cannot detect the wireless phone. I got my phone from Verizon and use them as my carrier. I have checked that the drivers are installed correctly for the USB port, and they all seem to check out ok. I have tried both USB ports and I have the same problem with both. I even tried to check if the software needed any updates today. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times, both from the CD before connecting the phone and then even connecting the phone first and allowing the auto installation routines to fire up and then point it to the CD.

Any ideas - it looks like yours is running fine.

What's really frustrating is that there doesn't seem to be any support either on-line or through a phone that I can contact - nothing was provided on the documentation that came with the kit.

Thanks

Paul

Yes - documentation is SKIMPY at best..... this forum provides all that you need though.... many good people here.
You *MAY* want to try to install the phonebook program, if memory serves me, I think it has a detection program in it also.

Does your phone show up in device manager?

The cable supplied with the AVX/VXW MOK8600 kit is compatible with the 8600 but the software won't recognize the newer phone. VZW doesn't offer the MOK8600 kit yet (may not ever) but it's $69 + shp directly from Audiovox. The phone book manager supplied with the MOK8600 kit has a primitive interface, but works jes' fine. If your PC isn't recognizing your 8600, try selecting a different driver - my recollection is that the 1st in the list - which installs by default - didn't work...
The AVX 8500 appears to be on a different branch of the family tree, as none of the cables/software expressly for the 8500 seem to work properly with either the 8300 0r 8600!

If you are a Mac laptop user, SmithMicro sells a $50 + shp kit for both 8300 & 8600, with cable, driver & connection scripts, but no phone book manager; kinda strange and unfortunate, as they produced all the software for both of the AVX/VZW kits. (I hate having to keep a PC alive at home, just for dumb tasks like backing-up & synchronizing my cell phone's phone book!)

Regardless of whether you're using Mac, PC, 8300, 8600, etc. my advice is the same - buy the kit designed for your phone, so that you'll have the best chance of getting a reliable solution or at least, getting competent support if/when something goes wrong... If you've spent a few grand on a laptop, a few more $$'s booking a business or vacation trip, you won't be congratulating yourself on saving $20 bucks, when your data connection craps-out in Key West or Cancun!!!

After thinking about it......
I believe I installed the Prolific USB to Serial drivers. If you search and can't find them, let me know, I should be able to dig them up........

Hi faastmaan

I have tried running the phonebook software as well and that too cant detect the device. I also used the data svc menu and switched to data only - interstingly as far as the phone was concerned this option can be selected when the phone is connected to a pc through a cable only - and it did when the phone was connected, but didn't when it wasn't - so it does look like I have a software/driver problem.

I did a search for the prolific drivers but couldn't find them in a downloadable form (even subscribed to drivers.com but they didnt have them).

Can you send me a link or email them to me - I can pm my email if you need it.

Cheers

Hi all...

Bought this from car-tronics right after reading this post, and installed it last week. I was afraid it would wipe out my existing address entries, or do something else wrong (like install all 2400 addresses from my Outlook and OE and ACT); but it worked fine the first time.

Noticed some specific behaviors that may be of interest to you all:

1st - here's my source sfwe: Windows XP Home Edition w/ Service Pack 1

2nd - my CDM8600 is at hdwe: TX55C_Rev_02, and sfwe: T055VE2M01_4.235

According to Mobile Link authors, it may not allow individual entry updates if your phone does not allow it; and I have noticed that that is the case with mine. So I must be very careful to make my updates in the following order:

1 - Launch Mobile Link after connecting the phone, and
a - reading the directory info from the phone, and
b - writing this info to my pc

2 - Open Outlook, and
a - verify or make updates to my Contact entries (I have the contacts which I care to have with me in my phone, in their own Contact folder); then
b - shut down my Outlook (this may not be necessary, but I suggest not taking chances)

3 - Go back to Mobile Link, and
a - select the Import function;
b - choose the Contact folder in which you have placed the contacts which you want to have in your phone; and
c - select those entries you want to import (you are given the list of entries that are in the folder, and you can select any or all of these); then
d - from the resultant list (these new / updated entries will appear in 'available' rows in the Mobil Link list of entries); now you can
e - manipulate and re-'massage' these entries; e.g., you can
-- sort by name to look for duplicates
-- delete duplicates
-- edit each entry (to change values one last time; e.g., I strip the "1" from in front of some phone numbers, I change the "group" name, etc.);
f - finally, I select "WRITE TO PHONE" to update the directory in the phone.

To be certain, I re-SAVE the entries in Mobile Link back to my pc.

If you've been counting, this is probably about the 3rd time I've done it; but this isn't Oracle or DB/2 so it doesn't make it easy to sync or avoid corrupting duplicates, etc.

**IMPORTANT** The reason I do a wholesale bulk copy of my directory to my pc is because when it writes back to the phone, it writes 300 entries even if they are blank; and I am afraid that if I try to only write a few entries, that it might wipe out some existing entries.

It goes without saying, that you want to re-check entries in your phone as well.

Hi again!

Now, to a question of my own:

Is there any software other than Mobile Link? I found a copy of Paragon's "PhoneSync" from my ACT4 days, but I never used it then, and it doesn't even install under XP now (web site says tough luck if you have Windows 2000).

I'd like to be able to manipulate info from field to field more easily (I should be able to drag-drop).

Plus... (I know I'm dreaming, but...) I want to be able to write to my SCHEDULE. After all, what is the point of having the SCHEDULE feature if you're only able to use it by entering everything long-hand... yucck!

Any...?

TIA!

Posted by: Daddy0h

... here's what I've found so far:

Intellisync Sync Software can be found at www.pumatech.com but at present does not support any Audiovox phones

Datapilot - Synchronization Software can be found at www.datapilot.com but does not support the CDM-8600

Sync Master can be found at www.mobile-master.com but does not appear to support any Audiovox phones

SnapSync can be found at www.futuredial.com but does not support the CDM-8600

... and that's what I have so far

I'm not understanding the rationale behind these various developers choosing to not have support for our phone (unless QualComm / AudioVox has some pretty arcane programming going on in the 8600 that is scaring these developers away...??)...

.. dunno...

Posted by: Maleboligia

Bell claims phonebook management software will be out "any day now" but that remains to be seen. I was originally told it would be available at the end of January. Maybe Jan 2005

Posted by: faastmaan

I have been in contact with Datapilot and they are checking into the possibility of our phone support. I strongly suggest sending off an email to them asking about support for our Audiovox phones......

The more people that ask, the more reason they have for trying to support it.....

Posted by: Maleboligia

Email sent can't hurt any and the phone would be alot more useful to me if I had some sort of sync software.

Posted by: Maleboligia

I got a reply...quite quick

Quote:
Unfortunately we do not currently support your model phone and there is no timeline as to when we will. You may visit http://www.susteen.com/supportedphones.htm to see which phones are supported. We are constantly adding new supported phones.

We do not have a list of "expected supported phones" but I have heard that we are planning to support it in the next few months.

So there may be a good option in the near future.

I continue to have problems in getting my laptop to work with the MOK 8600 and cell phone.

I have got a number for AudioVox tech support but haven't had time to call them yet.

But in a moment of idle curiosity on a Friday afternoon, I just tried reinstalling the software on another laptop that has XP for Home rather than XP Pro.

Guess what - it didn't work initially after following the instructions to the letter. But after I allowed Windows to reinstall the drivers and sofwtare after it had detected the device it did work. I just tried it and I managed to get on the net albeit slowly.

So - it seems to work on XP home but not XP Pro.

At least I have a starting point and maybe something to take with me on business at a push.

But it would be nice to get it working on my preferred machine now.

I just tried out the MOK for the LG vx4400 from verizon and found great data speeds on direct dial-up (115kbps) (i.e, not on express network or any data plan, just straight modem and air time usage) and smooth installation of drivers, etc. What I really want is to have the same ability on my audiovox 8600. Now, I've been following all the threads, and I am thinking of going with Cartronics on their well priced MOK. I see some of you have had problems with it.

Were those problems ultimately surmountable (i.e, phone not being recognized, phone book manager working, etc.)? And, how have you found the data speeds?

When I spoke with Audiovox rep (they also sell the MOK for the 8600), I was warned that for verizon customers, the dial-up speeds are super slow---b/c the software is "generic", i.e. not tailored for verizon. And of course, verizon still does not offer an mok for the 8600. If any of you have experienced using the software for the 8600, or any other method, for using the 8600 as modem, please let me know what data speeds you are getting on dial-up. If it's less than say 34 kpbs, I may have to stick with what I've got..

Thanks everyone.

Posted by: Joe Foe from Bu

I would also be intrested in the problems fixed and data speeds so please post any findings. I called Verizon today looking for a 8600 MOK and was told to get Audiovox's verion MOK and not to wait for Verizons MOK. If the data rates suffer or problems are not fixed with other software we need to call Verizon and demand the Verizon MOK made for the 8600....Or we wants phones that offer a Verizon MOK that allows higher data rates Verizon has in thier adds. That will shake Verizon's tree to get one made ASAP

Posted by: pookylulu

In my previous post, I mentioned data speed of 115 kbps using data dial in service (verizon, mok for lg vx4400). In hindsight, I'm a bit confused. I'm told that the dial in service works on verizon's quick-2-net platform--which supposedly maxes out data speed at 14.4 kbps. Then, I noticed that 115 is exactly one of the "port speeds" you can choose on the phones (both lg and the avx 8600), i.e., data connection speed.

So, for the true techies out there, how does one determine the data speed really? DSL is easy because I can see the difference immediately on my machine when on the Internet. With dial-up using landline, my connection icon in the icon tray (lower right hand corner) always tells me the "speed", it varies between 24 and 36 kpbs range, so I always trust that indicator. But with the wireless dial up connection, I don't know whether to trust that indicator (which showed me the 115 kbps connection recently).

confused....

Posted by: Daddy0h

Hi again;

The MobileLink sfwe has 2 "wireless" connect options:

1) Quick Net (at 14,400bps), and
2) High Speed (1xRTT)

What are these?
What/who am I connecting to when I select these?
Why does the first come w/ it's own phone num?
Why does the 2nd NOT come w/ a phone num?

Where can I go to find out more (SmithMicro makes the sfwe, but there is no info at their site...???)?

TIA!

Posted by: Daddy0h

Ok... I think I figured it out:

Each of these choices gets me into Verizon as my "wireless" ISP. The Quick Net already had my login info, but the 1xRTT did not. So I had to put in a dial-up number (#777) and my userid (my number@vzw3g.com) and my pswd (I think there is only one default pswd for all of us?).

My only question now is:

1xRTT appears to be faster than QuickNet, but I was monitoring the display on the cell phone as I was connected and noticed that it kept saying that I was transmitting & receiving at 9.6Kbps (certainly not the 240Kbps that I have my DataSvc set to). Now, am I getting confused, or is this significantly slower than 14,400 connect speed at the non-1xRTT (Quick Net)?

TIA!

Can the MOK-8600 Hands Free Kit Mobile Office Kit cable also be used to hack in to the phone?

The connection of 115k is your port speed... the speed in which the computer is talking to the modem. Your connection speed max via the avx 8600 to the "internet" is only 14.4k (not including Express Network of course). Way back when, I used to know Hayes AT commands and if the company had set the commands a certain way on your modem it would report back your port speed instead of your connection speed and people thought they were on the internet at 115k instead of 28.8k

Posted by: petec

Well, about the data rates. I have selected 115200 for the modem (in the computer) and in the phone. I have also set the name field to my phone#@vwz3g.com and password to vwz. That sets me up for the faster link.
When I connect, I keep the phone open and I can see the transmit rate (Tx) and the receive rate (Rx). They report 9.6 kbps without any activity. If I go to a web page and watch the Rx carefully, it will switch through many values, like 28.8 kbps, 163.4 kpbs and many values in between. Everything works fine.

Now here is the kicker. What I described above is using my Pocket PC as the computer. When I try it with my notebook, it will try to access a site and some data will flow down but before the full page appears, things slow down to the point that the page never loads. I can watch the number of bytes downloaded and the first 15k or so come pertty fast. The next 5k may take 3 minutes. Then things get really slow and the byte count will freeze for minutes then jump up maybe 100 bytes. Then freeze again. At this point, the connection stops and the screen no longer displays the Tx and Rx raes. It reverts to the normal screen idle screen, the clock etc. However, being quite patient, I will see it connect again and display Tx and Rx again and the byte count will go up a few bytes. This will go on for ever.

Anybody else have this happen?

BTW, I don't have any MOK, I just bought that DIC1100 cable. I set things up like shown at http://www.gomatic.com/support-cc.htm

Bell now says to get the software from Audiovox. Great except it only comes bundled with the cable for $70! I already have the ×××× cable I just need the phonebook software.

Posted by: targagirl

Use the cable and gagin, bitpim, voxindex, etc for the editing.......

Tons of information on this site about it.

I just bought the 8600 MOK from Verizonwireless.com for $25.99+tax, got it, the phone book from smith micro works WONDERFULLY!!!!

I haven't tried accessing the internet on my laptop through the phone, but I don't forsee the need anytime soon, so I'd rather not install more software.

I got the link from these forums, search for the post that has the vzw b2b link in it....

P.S. for all those concerned: when you write to the phone, it writes all 300 entries to the phone

Posted by: mozartHD

Anyone know where you can get the MOK (software only)?

I have the DataPilot software but it appears not to work with my cable (DIC-8300). Thanks, Mz

For sync software, please check this post for the most recent offerings from Susteen, FutureDial and Smith Micro. All three companies now offer software-only packages for the CDM-8600.

Just to let you know.....

I bought the DataPilot cable and software from Susteen, for my 8600.

It doesn't work with the Canadian version. This is the reply which I got from their Tech support (even as of this post, v3.3 has come out). And they have no plans to support it.

So I had to return all that stuff to them...

Posted by: Maleboligia

Good to know OmegaMan thank you for the tip. I won't be supporting them that is for sure.
