Does anyone know the Picture Format and Resolution settings for the KX414 (Phantom) phone? I have software and everything and I finally got Poly ringers on to the phone using the cable, but I can't get pictures yet.... ANyone know?

What exactly is the Kyocera Support team good for? They don't know anything about their phones. I am going to post the converstation I am having right now with a tech support guy...

Me: I was wondering if you could tell me the image format(s) that the KX414 supports.

him: Who is your service provider sir?

me: Us Cellular

him: do you have the Kyocera Desktop software?

me: Yes, I do.

him: ok, let me put you on hold for a second

(5 minute hold time)

him: sir, is that a color phone?

me: yes, it's the KX414

him: hold please sir..

(10 minutes this time)

him: Sir, yes, they are in gift format.....

me: you mean G I F format?

him: yes sir, but the phone has to be a brew enabeld phone.

me: It's the kx414, it is brew enabled....

him: it has to be a brew enabled phone.

me: so it's a G I F file right?

him: yes sir, but it has to be a brew enabled phone..

me: ok, thank you very much.

him: you are welcome sir, goodbye

************I HAVE A BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS************

But I am going to try it....

They don't know there own phones!

Kyocera Tech Support is a joke!
I am not blaming the reps, I guess just the whole Customer Service Practice of Kyocera (as for as tech suppt).

The Pics are NOT GIF's.... nor are they BMP or JPG... But after MANY MANY trial and error attempts, I've got the answers to all the problems (well the main ones) for the KX414, Sorry it's spread over so many forums, but we'll try to get them all in here now....wonder if I can rename the Topic just Kyocera Phantom Q and A or something? Not sure, I am new to forums and stuff, but Howardforums has been a HUGE HELP FOR ME.. there are some smart people out there..

Well, I guess you want the answers now huh?

The Pictures files that I've successfuly uploaded to my Phantom are .PNG files (Portable Network Graphics). All major graphics apps support this (MSPAINT for starters...)

Now the Time consuming part, on my part...

Screensavers can be up to 104 X 68 resolution (anything larger starts clipping "you won't see your whole pic")

Wallpapers can be up to 104 X 48 (have to compensate for the big old MENU button on the screen....)

I hope this helps a lot of people, I sure got my share of help, now I am able to pass on some info of my own.....

I've studied this phone a lot and can probaly help some people out a lot... Just gimme a ring and I'll see what I can do...

Since you can add pictures to your contacts so when they call they will show up, I did that one too

Contact Pictures about 38 X 32 (give or take a pixel)

I used photoshop to turn it into 104x48 png, and i tried a couple of different save settings but none would show up as the wallpaper (it did work as a screensaver).

I also called Kyocera's "technical support", here is my parascript

ME: Yes i have a very specific question about the Kyocera kx414
HER: Okay, what's the question?
ME: I need to know the file format of the wallpapers.
HER: The what?
ME: The file format; the way the picture is saved.
HER: Aummm ok I'll need you to hang on a second while i look, can i put you on hold?
ME: *sigh* Yes.
**** 11 minutes on hold ****
HER: Yes I was told it is a proprietary format and there's no way we can give that out.
ME: No way for anybody?
HER: There's no way for you to make your own wallpaper if that's what you were planning.
ME: Uh... Bye.

So I've wasted hours of my life looking for an answer and supposedly there isn't one? i hope not! Does anybody have any other ideas? (btw i just use the cable you buy from kyocera and bitpim)

Requirements to install custom files on a Kyocera.

1. Data cable
2. BitPim

Images should be saved in .PNG format.

Wallpaper resolution is: 104x49
Screens saver resolution is: 104x67
Caller ID icon resolution is: 40x32

Ringers can be .MID files. Kyocera Desktop software does not support midi files or any of the custom images.

seriously, i AM DOING THAT. i just now made a wallpaper in photoshop, 104x49. saved in png format, loaded onto phone in user/my pictures as bmp1 (no extenstion). then it shows up on the screen in the 'my pictures' but when you say "assign wallpaper" it says "wallpaper assigned" but nothing ever comes up but the plain white screen. have you actually tried this yourself?

Posted by: DanPFW

The trick with the custom formats is, don't remove the extension! I had problems with this too, since the original discoverers didn't state this very important fact outright in all cases. I also name my files as Bmp01.png, Bmp02.png, etc. I'm not sure if you need the file named as 01 or if just 1 would work.

Now, when you scroll through the pictures, they show a little lock icon over them, and when you scroll through them when assigning images to contacts, the new pictures show up as well.

thanks man! everything worked out with the wallpaper after leaving the extension on. *big grin*

Hey there!

How in blue blazes are you all getting BitPim to work and get your ringtones and wallpapers on your KX414s? I wasted all day yesterday farting around with my phone and BitPim AND Gagin AND the software that came with my data cable. It's giving me fits, big time! I can't even figure out how to get Get It Now to work. Do I need to have my phone flashed or am I just stuck with a boring phone. The wife is dying to get the Banana Splits theme put on her phone and I'm tryyyyin' to get this figured out. Any help is most appreciated! Thanks!

First off, that software that came with the cable sucks (we shouldn't have wasted our money).

Second, you plugged the cable into the headphone jack of the kx414, then you open bitpim.

Third, click on the "View" menu at the top. Click "View Filesystem" so that it is checked. A tab will come up that says "Filesystem" right next to the tabs that say calendar, ringer, etc. Click that.

Forth, click the " + ". It will say "retrieving". After just a few seconds the file system of the phone will come up and look something like

-$FIB_CHECKSUM
-$LINK_TIME
-$SYS_RMT
-$SYS_RMT.COUNT
-$USER_DIRS
+VoiceDB
+brew
+font
+nvm
+ui
-uibuild.dir
+user

Okay? i hope so. Now click the "+" next to 'user'. It will come up with some more folders but the one you're interested in is "mypictures". Now click the "+" next to 'pypictures'. You will notice that (probably) nothing will show up in it; the + will turn into a - . To upload a picture, right-click the word "mypictures" and select "New File". That is when a window comes up to pick the file you want to put on there.

The file has to be in a specific format. It has to be 104 wide and 39 tall. It also has to be saved as a .png. the only way to do this is in a photo editing software. Save it as Bmp1.png. Then Bmp2.png etc. And one more thing- leave the extention (the . p n g) on the file. BTW: don't just rename a .jpg to .png. Just for you novice users. It doesn't work that way.

NOW-- on your phone, go in the menu -> media gallery -> my pictures . A little smiley face will appear. Press the up button once and the picture you made will be there. choose "Assign" --> "Wallpaper" then it says "Wallpaper setting changed.".

i KNOW this works because I did it myself. just now with you actually too. If it doesn't work, it's probably because you didn't save the picture right, but i trust you can do it so don't worry.

As far as themes~~ i don't know! banana's will have to wait a while.

As far as custom ringers~~ those can be an .midi file off the internet. You place that in user/sound/ringer. hope that helps. We kx414 users are smarter than they wanted us to be.

Well, everything worked... up until I get the same error message I've been getting... LG-VX4400 on COM3: The phone is not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew. See the help for troubleshooting tips.

I'll get back with you in a bit on this. I have to go out but right now, I'm not happy about this phone. :/ Sorry.

First, download BitPim 0.7.14 from http://www.bitpim.org/#download-devel. Then, after installing the software, select the phone type of "Other CDMA Phone", not vx4400.

I did that too and it still didn't work. My PC is due for a reformatting. Could that help?

Russell

Posted by: Russbo

That's it!! I've had enough! I still can't get this POS to work. I knew it was too good to be true! I wasted $40 on a cable and software I can't even use! I guess this figures considering that's what I get for being cheap and going with the cheapest phone I oculd find, thanks to my wife. Anywho, who cares?! I'll just stick with my crappy ringtones and boring stock pictures from the manufacturer. Whatever!

YIPPEE!!! FINALLY! I got this thing to work. I'm sorry for sounding like a baby and all but you have to understand I got that Kyocera cable LAST Wednesday and it's taken me this long to figure it all out. And here's a hint no one else on this forum has and probably will tell you... look to your phone for the answer. Here goes. Go to Settings after you press Menu. Go allllllll the way to the bottom and look for Accessories. Select that then look for Com Speed at the bottom of THAT page. Fiddle with the settings 'til it works for you. My setting was 115.2 kbps. Good luck!

I didn't think that needed to be communicated. I think most people install the modem software, then proceed to the Modem control panel and test it using the "Query modem" button. If the test brings back data, the computer can talk to the phone, if you get an error, something is obviously wrong.

I guess most of the people around here are problably software developers or regular computer users and long time QNC users, so this problem would be very basic.

while trying to get Bitpim to work, I get "Failed to autodetect the port to use. I couldnt detect any candidate ports"

I am using my phone as a modem on a daily basis. Have had no problems there. I uninstalled desktop phone software, uninstalled the Kyocera as a modem, downloaded bitpim, change to any CMDA phone. and when I change the plus to minus, I get that error..> Failed to autodetect the port to use. I couldnt detect any candidate ports

Any Ideas??

Posted by: andyman925

Possibly... Bitpim only autodetects a few types of phones. Make sure your usb controller is installed and in Bitpim go View->View filesystem. Then click the + in the 'filesystem' tab. This is what I have to do for my kx414.

Posted by: Girthy

Thats where I have my problem, Under filesystems, I change the plus to minus, and I get my error

Posted by: Girthy

"Failed to autodetect the port to use. I couldnt detect any candidate ports"

Grrrrrrrrrrr!

I tried to assign a port and I still get this error

I am using a KX414 with the Kyocera 10044 cable

Am I missing a driver or something? I am using my phone as a modem for my laptop(windows XP). So I know that the pc sees my phone. Why can it not find it with BitPim. Should be the same driver right??

I have uninstalled Bitpim and reinstalled it. Same thing.

Under hardware manager, I tried to assign a port to my cable, different than my com4 wich is what I use for a mobile modem. Didnt work

So I put everything back to normal and I am back to square one.

Why doesn't BitPim see my phone?? Im sure its something stupid. Help me figure this out and I will send you 5$ via Paypal

Posted by: Girthy

I got it to work on my other pc.. sorry, offer is up on the 5$

Shoot, I tried uploading an acceptable .png file to my webserver and pointed my ohone's browser to my file and it decided that the data size was too large, even tho the file was under 9k in size.

Posted by: Zink03

Ok guys i have a se44 and there is a way through bitpim besides mentioned here or anywhere, at least anywhere i could find, this one was all frustrated luck...in bit pim, after u open filesystem click the first "+", then the + next to Brew, next the + next to shared. right click on shared and add ur .png of whatever dimensions the phantom uses. as far as connectivity goes, mine operates on 19.2 but i dunno exactly for urs. NOT GURANTEED TO WORK, just offering an option to try, cuz i figure if it works for one kyocera, it may work for em all. good luck.

Thanks for your help guys. All works well. :-) Just a query as to animated screensavers. What format are they in?
