3vw’s Tutorial + Settings for Mpegable X4 Live... To make “Hi Rez” MP4s for your P900

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: vwvwvw

A screen shot from one of my favorite movies... Fifth Element.

Well guy’s ever since Mark posted the thread “BengalBoy's Bible" How to Burn & Turn your P900 into a Mobile Theatre..” I’ve been somewhat consumed with the idea of converting DVDs into MP4s that I could both personally enjoy and show off this wonderful feature we have on our P900s. I’m very thankful to Bengalboy for sharing a simple and straight forward approach in taking us from a DVD all the way through to a finished MP4 that is very playable on our P900s.

Simple as it may be, there was one thing that bothered me though and that was the low quality of the image that was rendered using the standard PV Author default P800 Profile Settings. So I set out through trial and error to see if I could improve upon what the experts (that’s what Mark calls um) gave us.

What I learned after a week of going around in circles (many hours) with PV Author was that I just didn’t have enough control over the settings to achieve what I wanted... less pixelization and improved resolution. Yes I could increase the bitrate to help out but if I increased the size also (say from 194x144 to 320x224) it would become jerky and unacceptable to watch. I learned a lot by messing around with the various settings in PV Author but in the end I just couldn’t get anything I was satisfied with... So I turned to another converter... Mpegable.

To start out I was very impressed from the minute I opened Mpegable X4 Live. Having learned the ropes with PV Author I could now understand many of the things I wouldn’t have if I just went blind into Mpegable. A simple analogy I would use to compare Mpegable to PV Author would be like comparing Paint to PhotoShop. The ability to choose and adjust things in Mpegable is just great... but requires some know how before proceeding. Thankfully I had PV Author as my trainer to help me to understand what the basics were.

So what has Mpegable allowed me to do... well most of you have already been downloading the various sample movie trailers I’ve been posting on HoFo over the last week or so and can testify that the quality of the video in them is quite superior to what most mp4 conversions you see offered for the P900 look like (I like to call it Hi Rez). Even better than the demo “Hole in one” mp4 that came packaged on your P900.

Well, as I promised that I would share my settings with you on how I did it...I will now share them along with this (hopefully) easy to follow tutorial on how to use Mpegable.

I’ll be starting with a mpeg1 file as my sample file to be converted to a mp4 with Mpegable.

I’ll even supply you with this short MPEG1 file (21.9Mb) for you to download and use for the tutorial that follows. (I thought the most appropriate movie file for this tutorial would be the SE Advertisement HERE (just right click on the link and “Save Target As” to your Desktop)

(Note: If you want to know how to rip a DVD into a mpeg1 file, I suggest you go to Bengalboy’s thread HERE and spend some time there learning how to do that.
If you’re having problems with ripping your DVDs to Mpeg1 please address that in Bengalboy’s thread... I’m sure he’ll be glad to help you out with any problems you’re having)

MPEGABLE TUTORIAL

Now to start out you’ll need to download the free trial version of Mpegable X4 Live from HERE and install it on your computer.

1- Open Mpegable and you should see a window that looks something like this below.

(Note: I’ve rearranged and resized the windows so my view may look a little different than what you see when opening this program. You will also have to put up with that “dicas” logo in the upper left corner of your finished file until you pay for and register the program)

2- The first thing we are going to do is choose that mpeg1 file (SonyAdvert.mpg) that you downloaded for this tutorial and load it.
In the “Input- #1” section click on the BROWSE button (red oval) to open your selection window to browse your Desktop and then find and select the SonyAdvert.mpg file.
Just double click on that file and it should load in the window under “Input #1” box.

3- Next click on the Image Preprocessing tab

4- You should now see the window below.
Next click on the SETUP box under the “Cropping / Resizing” category.

5- You should now see a new window open like in the picture below.
You will now need to check User defined and then enter in the “Resize” box” 240 x 196 (Note; Even though you clicked on the “User defined” selection it may not register a black “DOT” but just go ahead and enter the numbers... it should allow you to do so anyways)

Notice that when you entered 240 it automatically registers 196 for the other entry. It’s because we have the auto Constrain Proportions feature checked

Now click the “OK” box

(FYI I always use 240 for the first entry when resizing for my "Hi Rez" converting. Though the second entry of 196, I can and will change to 174 depending upon the original mpeg1 movie file that I am converting... read more about this variation after the Tutorial in my comment section)

6- Next click on the Video Encoding tab.

7- You should now have the window open as below.
Change the "Video Bitrate" to 396 and also change the “Bitrate Control” to Constant Bitrate Mode
And just to be sure, check the other settings under both “Preferred Quality” and “MPEG GOV Structure” to see that they also match what is shown..

8- Next click on the Video Processing tab.

9- You should now see this window below.
Click on User defined under the “Target Framerate” and also change the rate to 10 Hz.

10- Next click on the Interoperability tab.

11- You should now see this window as below
Select MPEG-4 and click on Simple Profile under the “Video Profile” section.
Also note that the AAC LC “Audio Profile” is selected.

12- Next click on the Audio Encoding tab

13- You should now see this window below
Next change the “Audio Bitrate” in the “Bitrate” box to 24 kBit/s on the drop down menu.
Select Mono under the “Channels” box.
And also set the “Sample Rate Conversion” to 22050 Hz

14- Now return to the Basic I/O screen by clicking on that “tab”.

15- You should now be back to the main window as seen below and we are just about ready to convert.

(Note: I would like to add that you can change the MP4’s file name in the ‘Output #2” box before we go ahead and convert... it’s not necessary at all, but just something you may wish to do in future conversions)

16- OK... Click on the Red Dot and sit back and watch the conversion role. (it should look something like what you see below)

If all went well you should now have this new SonyAdvert.mp4 (4 Mb) file sitting on your Desktop ready for transfer to your P900 and enjoy!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

COMMENTS:

Well, I hope this Tutorial worked for you and you can now make your own “Hi Rez” MP4s the same way as I do... I bet you can’t wait to put a few of your own files through the converter and see what happens. (maybe some of you might even want to share your converted MP4s by uploading them to ShovelhEds ftp site... thanks again Sean)

Here are a few things I’d like to comment on though ...

One of the first things to realize when converting MP4s to these “Hi Rez” settings, is that it requires about 2 Mb (+ or -) of storage for every minute of video recording. In other words, you won’t be able to fit a full length movie on a single 128 Mb MS Duo anymore. (Like you can using the P800 Profile settings). You will now have to break up a movie into segments of 45- 50 mins. and place it on several 128 Duos (recording at this kind of quality can be expen$ive... to bad we can’t use a 256 Mb MS Duo in our P900s ).

Personally I don’t care if I have to go through this process of using several Duos to have a complete movie at my disposal. I just carry the extra memory sticks in my wallet and swap them out when necessary. I presently own (5) 128s and can exchange content on them very easily with the use of my Sony TR1‘s convenient MS reader that’s built right into it’s side. (See pic below)

IMO I’d rather have a great quality video image to view and go through the process of changing Sticks than settle for a highly pixelated, color banded, un-involving image that I can fit on just 1 MS Duo.
Anyhow most of the video clips and movie trailers (music vids included) aren’t really that long so they don’t even enter into this issue.

Next you might ask how I go about segmenting a 2hr movie file. Mpegable has an option built in to start and stop your recording process which will allow you to do exactly what is needed. I know I didn’t cover that feature in the Tutorial because I think you can figure that out by yourself... but if need be I’ll try and help you out with this feature also.

The next thing I want to comment on is my final resize setting of 240 x 196. I spent a lot of time trying to develop an image in a larger resolution (i.e.320 x 208... or just anything larger than 240 x 196) and just couldn’t come up with the same kind of image quality you see with my present setting. To try and simply explain (what I believe to be the problem) is that the larger you make the image the more you need to fill it with detail. For instance, I’m at 240 x 196 and use a 396 k/Bit fill. If I was to maintain this same kind of quality and to fill a 320 x 208 screen I would literally have to up the bitrate a lot more... and believe me it’s high enough already to be taxing the limits of our precious little P900s (156Mhz processor and/or the limitations of the PacketVideo Player on board the P900) and furthermore, I have also discovered that I am already at the limit of not being able to add anymore (total bitrate... meaning both video and audio combined) to the conversion without suffering some form or another of a problem. (i.e. video jerkiness and/or audio skipping)

You may have noticed that I am at a conservatively low audio setting (24 k/bit @ 22 kHz mono) and believe me there’s nothing more I’d like to do but up this too. Stereo would be even better but just try it at this audio setting and see how awful it sounds.(you just need to be at a higher bitrate to utilize stereo in the mix)
So playing the video at my chosen settings I am forced to keep the audio down or the problems reoccur (i.e. jerkiness in the video) If you wish to improve the audio, you can always compromise my video (bitrate) settings by reducing them and then you can increase your audio (bitrate).settings. Just play around for yourself and you’ll see what I mean.

Another thing that I mentioned in my Tutorial above, is changing the second entry of resizing from 196 to a lower number (I will often choose 174 in my movie converting). I have found by changing this second number I am able to somewhat fool the scaling aspect of the P900 into making a better image than what it would yield by just leaving it in the Constrain Proportions mode as the default is set on Mpegable. It does somewhat distort the final aspect ratio of the file but I have found I sometimes prefer this against a more pixelated image that a 196 entry gives... this again is just my personal observation and preference.

Well as you can see I can go on and on with this and don’t even begin to share the whys and wherefores of all that I did in my experimenting. What I really wanted to do here is give a EZ 2 follow guide on how to use Mpegable for the novice (that will yield the “Hi Rez” quality) and at the same time also give to those who have been requesting my settings (those who know how to navigate Mpegable already) the ability to duplicate what I have discovered on my own... I hope I have succeeded at both!

Thanks again to everyone who enjoyed and complimented me on my Movie Trailers and were patient till I was able to put this together.

3vw...thanks for the great tutorial. I've been delaying getting Mpegable until you put out your tutorial on how to do it properly having followed the other threads on how to do it properly quite closely. Now I have no reason to put it off anymore!

Thanks for the efforts and all of the great trailers...I've impressed many people with them so far!

Keep up the good work!

Also...real quick...do the Creative TravelSound speakers work well with the P900?

Posted by: ShovelhEd

heheh great stuff. GOing to try it with Mpegable and Squeeze.. a shootout so to speak.,

Posted by: vwvwvw

Thanx C20LET...

Ever since I bought my first Travelsound Speaker system (I now own 3 of them... gota have back-ups lol) I’ve been very impressed with its performance while using it with my P900. I love to play Movie Trailers for ppl (seeing most ppl can only give you a minute of viewing time anyways) and show off the portability of the P900 and Travelsound set-up. What’s nice is that the Travelsound seems to even improve the sound of my MP4s (that’s compared to the P900s internal speaker) while not accentuating the problems that are inherent in the low quality that the MP4 was recorded in.

The Trailers I’ve made for the P900 usually have a wide dynamic range (i.e. Spiderman II) and when played through the Combo it just leave ppl shocked with the shear volume of the presentation. In fact, they are so impressed with the Trailer that they go on talking about the movie and forget how they were able to view this kind of presentation on just my cellphone! I take that as a compliment to it’s ability to effectively entertain.

If you go to Creative’s website and look at the specs on this little speaker system you’ll see they claim a frequency response that goes down to 150 Hz!!! That’s phenomenal for such a tiny little (Titanium) driver(s) that are in the Travelsound.

Maybe I’ll do a freq sweep on them to actually see what the 3db down point is. Some times the manufactures likes to strreeetch the specs a little too far.

I know they’re a bit expensive but I think you’ll find them worth it if you like to listen to MP3s or watch MP4s in style. Just be sure to get the adapter to properly convert the output of your P900 so you don’t short the mic circuit while using your phone this way.

Shovelhed..

I haven’t played around with Squeeze yet myself so you’ve got my interest... keep us posted.

I can't believe that it's finally here: THE TUTORIAL

I haven't even read through it yet but I wanted to be one of the first of many to thank you for sharing your many, many hours of hard work.

OK, OK... enough of this shameless praise and admiration. I need to start reading and learning. Thanks again Don.

You can skimp on price to get quality that's for sure. With devices like this, going half-a**ed isn't a good thing. Don't want to make this a TravelSound thread really, but maybe someone else can benefit from the answer to the question. Which adapter are you talking about it? The 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter I take it?..or...

My best 'trailer' experience was with your Shrek 2 trailer. Was waiting for the LOTR to start and was showing off to my friend and then this guy and his girlfriend behind us are like 'is that Shrek 2'?. Let them watch the trailer and they were quite happy (Shrek fans obviously). Then during the previews the actual preview was played and started skipping and such. The theatre had to stop playing it and started the movie instead. After the movie the couple thanked me since they wouldn't have seen the trailer without the P900! Made my day!

Hope to show off more now that you've shared your wisdom with us!

That's a great story C20LET... it made me :laughs:

OK, I have read through the tutorial and I see that I was not too far away from getting that great 3VW quality video. I have just converted a couple of files using the settings and I finally have that 3VW look.

Question: I mostly am interested in watching TV shows and/or movies, both ripped from DVD or TIVO. Is there a preference for ripping at a specific quality or for starting with a specific resolution prior to conversion with mpegable?

Thanks again.

Thank you for the tutorial 3VW

Technically I'm useless but, I'll give it a go and see what I can do. I'm 100% I'll give up after 5 minutes of trying though.

Thank you...

GordonGecko,

I have been using mpeg1 files exclusively as my source so far... I’ve tried a couple of avi’s from DVD Ripper but didn’t like what I saw compared to using mpeg1 as a source file.

I also use another program called EO-Video to convert Quicktime (.mov) files to mpeg1 then Mpegable.

I haven’t done anything in regards to TV shows... What are you using to capture your TV shows? (and in what file of type?)

Jalal,

Just give it a try... I used my wife as a guinea pig to see if she could do it (she doesn’t know anything about this stuff) It went just fine for her! If she can do it you know what...

I am using Tivo to record television and I am using #1 DVD Ripper for DVD’s which does allow a direct to mpeg1 rip. The program allows you to rip to mpeg1 using the following resolutions: 720x480 (high), 640x432 (good), 480x320 (medium), 352x240 (low), and “Original DVD Quality” (whatever that is??!!). Based on your experience with mpeg1 as a source, any ideas which setting would provide the best conversion quality?

Thanks again.

Posted by: LarryH

Don -- wow! Thanks bunches! Really great that YOU went through all that trouble.

I ripped the advert AND a scene from "Scent of a Woman." Rez is great, sync is great, movement's still a wee bit jerky but, given the compression and the savings in size, etc. pretty darn impressive.

Now if only I thought I'd ever watch a movie on my phone!

hey 3 vw's does this stuff all work on the p800

cuz i saw the other (theatre stuff for the p900 )
so does these dvd's and ure tutorial work on the p800

and if not plz tell me why

Hi 3VW,

Was really happy to see ur tutorial. Was waiting for it anxiously since quite a while (ever since u have been mean enough to tease us with those trailer's of urs).

The moment i read ur tutorial i was off to convert some videos of my own. After using Mpegable with ur settings i have realised that (as u have mentioned in ur tutorial) that the end result in terms of file size does turn out to be massive which i feel isnt really that practical. It wudnt really matter (to be honest) how many Duo's one has got as swapping them is always irritationg especially if ur in between an interesting flick and u end up stopping cos of having to switch duos. I agree that to have such great quality certain sacrifices have to be made. But i am still working on quality of video keeping size in mind. This really is a criterion IMO.

As for Sorenson, well, with Version 3.5 u will notice that it comes in quite handy for universal conversion. And IMO i achieve results comparable to wot u have shown (along with smaller file size)....keeping practicality in mind. A little tweaking here and there with it should produce amazing results.

Since u are such a whiz at this stuff i wud suggest (and hope) that u have a go at this proggie as i am sure that u wud be able to achieve much better results.

Once again, thanku for ur excellent tutorial and kudo's to ur efforts and time.

This is what makes HoFo such an amazing place where people are always willing to contribute without thoughts of personal gain.

Cheers 3VW....Cheers HoFo.
Doc.

Heya Gordon,

Mpeg 2 would provide the best quality to convert from the better the source the better the result.. Garbage in adn garbage out and all that.
MPEG2 has significantly higher bitrates for audio video so your end result will likely be nicer. Give it a shot!

Cheers

Sean

Posted by: Finchey

I tryed it but I can't get any sound.
I have sound when I play back the ripped dvd
but not when converted to MP4 Ive tryed
playing it on my pc and my phone.
The picture looks great just no sound
Is this because I have the demo version of
mpegable?

Posted by: vwvwvw

GordonGecko

I use “Original DVD Resolution”

Larry H

Thanks for the report Larry... Do me a favor and redo one of your vids with the “Audio bitrate” changed to 16 kBit/s (instead of 24 kBit/s) and tell me if that doesn’t improve the smoothness.
The audio will sound even worse but it should show you that what you gave up in audio bits, you can benefit in return in the video area. As I mentioned in the Tutorial you could reduce the Video Bitrate (say to 348 kBit/s) and then you may even increase the Audio bitrate. If you play around, keeping in mind this maximum overall bitrate issue, you may come up with a formula that you prefer even better than mine.
And yes you really can watch a whole movie on your phone and enjoy it too. With my Travelsound hooked–up I can even forget I’m watching my phone after a while of viewing a movie and that’s a good sign that it is doing for me what I want... involvement without distraction from low quality anomalies!

Hamoksh

Sorry, the settings were not worked out for the P800

Futuredoc

As I said in my Tutorial Futuredoc these settings give me the best results for what I’m looking for, even at the cost of twice the file size I’d want. The choice to compress even further is the norm when using the P800 Profiles in order to put a whole movie on one 128 MS Duo. If you’ve found a way to produce a comparable quality to my “Hi Rez” vids while only using a 1Mb – 1 min. ratio please share it here... I can’t wait to see it!

I’ll probably give S Squeeze a try in the future just to see if it has anything better to offer but from the comments I’ve heard about it so far it sounds like it is more limited in its offering of settings than Mpegable. Maybe somebody (like Shovelhed) can help out with a comparison review on this. I’m not really partial to any program except the one that gives the BEST results and so far that's Mpegable... so just show me some-thin better and I’ll jump at it.

Finchey

Before I look else where as to why you’re not getting sound I need to be sure that you are playing this on a P900 and not a P800... I can't see what kind of phone you own in your profile.
And yes, you should have sound with the trial version.

Posted by: Finchey

Sorry I should have said its a p900.
I can play back other peoples Mp4's with
sound on my pc and phone and I can play
ripped VOB files on my pc with sound but
I loss the sound when converted to MP4.

Thanks for the great tutorial 3VW the picture
looks great I just need to sort out the sound.

Posted by: futuredoc

Hi 3VW,

I suggest that u make a clip with Sorenson Squeeze with "progressive-small" settings. And it will definitely not be 1Mb per minute but rather 2.2-2.5MB per minute. With some tweaking lesser for better i wud say.

Give it a go and let me know how it goes.

Cheers,
Doc.

P.S. Use the 3.5 version n not the 3.0 one.

Posted by: The Rex

thanks for the tutorial, 3vw

i just made a couple of clips and they look awesome, but the volume on some of them is lower than i'd like... any suggestions?

Posted by: haywood

Thanks for finally providing your tutorial, VW.... I have a question tho.

You mentioned how you can segment a complete movie for MS purposes, but how about the opposite?

I have ripped Matrix R'loaded but I only selected the latter half of the movie by selecting chapters 12-on, individually using #1-DVD-Ripper.

So with Mpegable I have to add each chapter as a job, but is there a way to combine them to output as a single file?

If you have any ideas, please share them here. Thanks again, VW.

Posted by: vwvwvw

Finchey

Since you are using a P900... you’re the only one (so far) that’s experiencing no sound. I would guess that you might have missed something in the Tutorial.

Suggestions:
Check that you selected MONO under step 13 of “Audio Encoding”.
Actually double check ALL settings under steps 11 and 13

I hope this helps!

Futuredoc

Thanx for the tip on S Squeeze I’ll give it a try when I can.

As far as the issue with file size, I’m kind of confused by what your suggesting.

In your first post you said...

I’m just lost here as to the point you’re making... help me out futuredoc?

Rex-star

When converting a DVD using DVD Ripper I usually deal with the volume issue in that program. It allows you to increase it in your first conversion to mpeg1.

If you’re starting with something else.. Sorry I don’t have any suggestions at this point to give you.

Haywood

Yea splitting and joining are not alway the best way to go... there can be problems with doing this. I have experienced movie files that just won’t allow me to uses the restart feature (in the middle of a file) that is otherwise a wonderful way to segment a movie for my purposes.

It is obviously best if you can keep the whole movie together and not have to even deal with these issues.

As far as joining goes... Bengalboy told me about a program called Easy Video Joiner that allows you to do this. I've only used it once and it worked but left out a few seconds of the file at the point of joining and I really didn’t like that. Maybe you’ll have more luck with it than I.

After looking at their website again I see they also have a splitter... maybe you might want to do a total rip with DVD Ripper and then try this splitter on the mpeg1 to get your second half in tact.

Hi 3VW,

Ges i have been a bit misleading. And as for ur tutorial about where u say....

Well, i dont know what i did wrong but when i encoded some clips with ur settings i was getting amazing quality but the file size was roughly around 3.5-4MB per minute which is why i mentioned in my settings that it would be around 2MB.

Ges i will give ur tutorial a go again and see what i have been doing wrong. Anyways, i still would like u to give Sorenson a go and want u to better the process of encoding in terms of "file size" as i am sure that no one but u can do this.

Once again, thanx for all ur help. And hey i have uploaded the clip to Sean's FTP so cud u have a luk at it and tell me wot u think of it and where i can improve on. Wud appreciate ur help.

Cheers,
Doc.

may i just ask if u bought your creative mini sound system? or did u do it urself?=) thanx!

guys if i follow the same steps as the tutorial will it work on a P800 ?

Posted by: The Rex

maybe 3vw can confirm, but i don't think so...

when i put the clips on my p800, it says the res is too big, so you may have to mess around with it a bit

I couldn’t resist sharing this one... The source file for this conversion wasn’t that great but if you like to sit and watch Victoria’s Secret commercials, you just might find yourself sitting for this one too! hehe Enjoy

Hi 3VW,

I was hoping that u could tell me wot are the settings i must use to get the best video using the Philips Player for the P900. I usually dont get audio most of the time inspite of encoding Audio in AWR-NB format.

Could u shed some light on this please.

Also, is there a possibility to encode videos for the P900 in 3GPP format using X4live which i purchased a few days back. In PVauthor 3.3.1 there is an option to save the file in 3GPP format. Does sumthin like this exist in X4live??

Cheers,
Doc.

Which format do i use to get audio for the phillips player?

futuredoc

I’m not sure what your whole problem is since you’ve said you’ve recorded in AMR-NB... that should’ve given you sound when using the Philips on the P900.

As far as recording in 3gpp with Mpegable... under step 11 of the Tutorial change the settings to...

kimchi29

I believe I mentioned this before, that my settings for Mpegable were geared for only the P900 and not the P800. That’s why you’re having problems using this Tutorial. The on-board Player that comes with the P900 is so much better than the P800’s (IMO) that I hate to comment any further. If you continue with the P800 I’d say get the Philips Camcorder App (and don’t pay for it... just download the free trial version).

If you’re going to continue to use the Packet Player that came with the P800 my best suggestion would be to use PV Author to encode with the P800 Profile for settings.

Hi 3VW,

Thanx for replyin, i found out where i had made the mistake.

Anyways, now that i can encode in 3GPP with sound i have noticed that the results are not as great as the MP4's encoded to be played in the built in video player.

Another thing is that the 3GPP files when played on the Philips Player are extreeeeeemely jerky and slow and completely out of sync. What am i doing wrong?

Although i must say that i did like being able to play video full screen on P900 with Philips Player. Is there any ways where we can have the same quality as the "Hi Rez" videos but only full screen on the inbuilt video player?

One last thing, after changing the setting to auto constraint proportion in the video processing tab, when i type in 240 i dont automatically get 196 but rather 180. Why is it that way?

Sorry for so many questions.

Cheers,
Doc.

Somehow I knew this question was going to eventually come up...

I know most of u will say that its easier to split the source files which are usually in .avi or any other format but still wanted to know if an dMP4 splitter/joiner existed or not.

Doc.

There is a feature in Mpegable that allows you to START and STOP the encoding where you wish.

Simply set the IN and OUT points (under “Interoperability” step 10 of my Tutorial) in the highlighted areas as in the screen capture below.

A footnote to this... As much as this feature is wonderful to be able to use it sometimes doesn’t work.

I don’t really know what the problem is as of yet but with some movies (mpeg1) I can’t get the audio to sync when I start encoding anywhere else but in the beginning of the file. Even worse there are some movies that I can’t even start at all... except at the beginning.

All I can suggest is give your movie a try with this feature and if it works you’ll have what you want. Otherwise I continue to look for a program that might do the job without other issues.

Oh, I did mention Easy Video Joiner which I see also has a Splitter version now... could give this a try.

Posted by: kimchi29

Even though im using the P800, i get the exact same problem as doc when using the phillips player. The quality is good, cant ask for better, but the video plays jerky and smooth only at some times. Audio is in perfect sync though. Also how do you disable the backlight from going off and the screensaver from coming on when using the phillips player. I am watching an episode of Initial d and it runs jerky and the backlight problem is pissing me off. Sorry fo the abundance of question.

Posted by: kimchi29

oh yea btw. i get the jerkyness when playin in full screen. The onboard video player for the p800 sucks sooo much. I wish some programmer would make a new one that also plays mpeg and such. that would be great

Thanks for your concern and no problem... I want to help if I can.

I’ve tried many different things to work out a solution for the problems that occur on the P800 when using the Philips app. There is always (what seems to be) a framerate problem that doesn’t want to go away... so I gave up! (Understandably since I own a P900 now) I did want to help out P800 owners yet but it just got to frustrating.

You need to turn off your screensaver when running movies and the dimming of the backlight is something that you won’t get around (it would have been great if Philips would have addressed that). Though you can turn the brightness back on by just pushing in on the jog dial when it goes dim.. over and over and over...

@vwvwvw

BRILLIANT tutorial

I have also been playing with mpegable over the last few weeks and i was also getting lip sync problems also.

The way i overcame this was to rename the MPEG file that you have ripped to a AVI file (a warning comes up but just press yes)and this has so far worked with no problems

Also there is a way of playing a 200x130 video fullscreen if you cut/crop the avi file in mpegable as the signal bars that you see on the side of the file is stopping pvauthor from opening it fullscreen but with the bars removed their is no limitation

Anyway once again WELL DONE on the tutorial

Edit:
Here is a small clip at 200x130 but it will play fullscreen and it is encoded in stereo

right click save as
http://fire.prohosting.com/ronsize/...y%20Guy%203.mp4

Posted by: kimchi29

yea, btw, i did pay the 30 dollars like 1 month ago. you have no CLUE how PIST OFF i was! 30 dollars for 5 more seconds of recording time and those bastards dont respond to any email i send out. I gave up using the phillips since the dimming got on my nerves and so did the jerkiness, back to watch movies in small screen mode using the original video player. I wish the p-- series had sd compatability or at least msd Pro. Those punks at sony, taking advantage of us americans !

Posted by: vwvwvw

Thanks welsh uk,

I downloaded and played you Family Guy clip on my P900... It’s great to have the total full screen effect.

It’s really a preference (one has) as to choosing a recording size... say like your 200x130 and then having the Scaler on-board the P900 do some doubling so as to fill the entire display ( to 320x208) which (sadly to say I feel) results in loss of detail.

BTW our viewing distance plays a big part in this too. If I view your file at a distance of say 24” (or more) away from the P900, it looks pretty good but if I get closer in then the pixelization begins to bother me again.

I’d rather choose to record at the 240x174 and end up with less scaling and a smaller image that while viewing closer in I end up with higher detail. I feel that this is even more important when I’m watching files that are other than cartoons or animation

I know we just can’t have both since the limitations are evident and will rear their ugly head if both size and bitrate are pushed too far.

It’s really great that we have options though that can make us all happy so there isn’t just one way we are forced to encode. I enjoyed viewing your file and if you have the time (and would like to try it) encoded the Family Guy again at...

Resize 240x174
Video 396 kbit/s CBR
Audio 24kbit/s @ 22k Hz AAC
Framerate 10 Hz

Even though the viewing area is less than filled, tell me if you don’t prefer the Hi-er Rez quality? (and ya... I know the audio suffers)

As I said in the beginning, it’s all a matter of preference in the end... Thanks again for sharing and enjoy!

I'm not sure what your problem could be ... I almost exclusively use mpeg1 files as a source when converting to MP4 with Mpegable.

Posted by: toddy196

Did exactly as the tutorial said yet the lip sync is about 3 seconds out???
any suggestions

Posted by: vwvwvw

Sorry to hear you’re having a problem toddy196,

I not sure what it could be... might even have something to do with a Pal verses a NTSC issue ?!? (that’s only a wild guess though)

You should do a direct download of that same SE Ad (that I’ve already converted to MP4) and see if the problem manifests with it also.

Right Click on the “Hi Rez” hyperlink in this post to download it...

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...270#post2141270

On a similar note though, I’ve been working on a new none released movie (from vcd format) and have been encountering some lip sync issues myself... but I don’t believe this to be related to your problem because there have been many of other members who have successfully gone through the tutorial without this occurring for them.

The more I play around with Mpegable the more I learn and sometimes the results are not always favorable. Not that I’m advocating to turn to another app now, it’s just that I think not all the kinks are easily ironed out at this point.

Let me know if the MP4 version does the samething.

Posted by: toddy196

Thanks for the reply vwvwvw,
Iv'e been playing around with this all day and i think iv'e sorted it.
I've been using #1 DVD Ripper and iv'e been ripping everything to Avi instead of mpeg1 so i ripped an episode of the simpsons then converted it to mpeg4 and it seems fine now!

Thanks for the great tutorial

toddy196,

I'm glad you found a simple solution to your problem.

Hey.... Wasss Up L Bo,

I've downloaded these 7 and I'm working on them... I hope to upload to Shovelhed's site tomorrow.

BTW I'm just :laughs: having to go through these again. Wasabi is one of my favorite.

Posted by: L Bo

Cool!! Thanks man!

Posted by: vwvwvw

Alrighty L Bo... I converted (7) WassUp Commercials and have uploaded them to Shovelheds ftp. (FWIW I’ve put my biterate settings in the file titles... Vid x Audio).

They came out pretty good considering the quality of the source files... let me know what you think.

I put them under upload > 3vDub > BudWies Folder. If you need any help with downloading these please contact Shovelhed for help.

Btw I know Shovelhed is looking for a STICKY for his thread... can you help him out?

If I ever get into his server, I'll get 'em. I'm currently being refused. I'll see what happens. Thanks again!

@ 3vw Great guide, thanks. I encoded the Boogie Pimps Somebody to Love with your settings (and cropping a bit off top and bottom so it fills the width of the screen) and it looks fantastic.

Anyone got anywhere I could host it to share with others?

However, I tried to do the Shrek 2 trailer (the link to your version no longer works) and had problems. At first I couldn't open the mov file in mpegable, but then I installed QuickTime Alternative and I could open it in mpegable, but when I convert it, the audio in the mp4 stutters (also when played back on the PC, so not a phone-related problem). When I tried using a lower resolution version of the trailer mpegable says there is no audio at all - it seems that Quicktime copy protection is enabled. Did you not have these problems when you converted it?

Posted by: RockyMc

Shrek 2 update - I got the hi-res version (480 pixels wide) to work by running it through EO-video to convert to AVI and then converting it in mpegable. This seemed to solve the stuttering problem.

However, EO-video can't seem to cope with the audio in the lower resolution trailers (240 and 352 pixels wide) - they play OK, but when converted to AVI the audio is scrambled. Shame as I see this is actually a different trailer.

Wow, excellent guide. Perfect for single chapters of DVD'd I have the lobby shot out scene from the matrix on my phone now(uplaoded it to shovelheads ftp site now) And its running very smoothly

Posted by: fuji_tensai

After following the Hi Rez tutorial, is it expected to slightly jump a few frames but still stay in sync with the sound when in full screen? when its viewed in smaller screen its very smooth and doesnt jump at all as well as still keeping with the sound.

Many thankx!!!

Thanks for such a great tutorial. It really helps me alot. But i have some queries, after i change the setting to auto constraint proportion in the video processing tab, when i type in 240 i dont automatically get 196 but rather 180. Why is it that way?I believe someone did raise this question before. Also, when i convert certain files,it has no sound, although i am very sure i follow every guide on the tutorials, but when i reach the audio encoding part,i can't make any changes there.Anyone can help??Thanks.

Posted by: AntonisCy

i converted a very high quality mpeg video to mp4 via Mpegable.. it is really good but not as good as the original... what happens if you try to take the setting a little bit more higher? it wont play good on the p900?

Posted by: vwvwvw

Hi guys... I’ve been preoccupied with other things lately (I got a P900 Mod coming) and I’m sorry for not responding to your questions earlier.

RocyMC

As you’ve already discovered Mpegable doesn’t accept .mov files... and I did mention earlier in the thread that I use a program called EO-Video to convert .mov files to .mpeg and then use Mpegable. BTW I always try to use the high(est) res.version of a .mov trailer as my source file and I haven’t had any problems with audio thus far when converting (like you mentioned)

FYI I’ve had some problems with my FTP server (again) over the last week (I also have limited space) and couldn’t upload... but all fixed now, and I’ve uploaded my Shrek2 Trailer again so you can give it a run for comparison sake.

Shrek2 Trailer

I just finished playing it again on my P900 and it does look great... it was encoded at 240x192

Codename47

I downloaded your Matrix mp4... very nice, and thanks for share-in! BTW I noticed you posting links to this thread over on Esato. Hopefully more people will benefit from it too.

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=51159

fuji_tensai

I’m not sure what you mean by “it”. If you find your mp4 is not running as smooth as you would like, you can try lowering the audio bitrate more and that usually helps.

weepin118

If you leave the “constraint” box checked it will restrict the proportions in your resizing relative to the size of your source file (whatever that is that you are starting with). If you uncheck the box you now can set the resizing to whatever size you like... my preference is most often 240 x 174. I find I get (at times) a better quality image using these numbers. There appears to be a scaling effect onboard the P900 that when I use either 240 x 196 or 240 x 180 it will with some files leave a more pixelated image. I therefore will use 240 x 174 even though it somewhat stretches the height of the image a little more than I’d like... look at the view of the 5th Element pic in the very beginning of my Tutorial and you’ll see what I mean. (I personally can tolerate that more than pixelization it seems). There are no stead fast rules here and I can only say try different settings and you will learn a lot (like I did) about the variables and their effect on the end result.

As far as the audio goes I can only say that I start with mpegs as my source files. If I don’t have a valid file to start with I have noticed that the audio settings in Mpegable don’t even allow me to select any changes (they are grayed out). So I can only recommend that you be sure that your source is a valid file to begin with. Otherwise I have not experience the kind of audio problem you described.

AntonisCy

Why not just go ahead and give it a try yourself and then tell us what happens?

Hi, im just new to the p900 community.
I've tried to convert the sony advert into mp4 using x4 live. All looks good until i download it to my handset and try to play it and it says "cannot play file". I followed the tutorial step by step about 5times and still no luck. If anybody can help me on this matter it would be much appreicated.

peace out.

Posted by: vwvwvw

Hi kaZz1985,

Welcome to the UIQ !!!

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing problems and I’ll try to help you out.

First to clarify, you are using a P900 not a P800... I say this because your comment that the converted MP4 file won’t play on your phone sounds like what happens if you are trying to play it on a P800 (you just can’t play these files with the “stock” PacketVideo Player that comes with the P800... they’re too big!).

Now having gotten that out of the way... let’s see what could be going wrong with your P900!

I would now ask you to download one of my Movie Trailers and tell me what happens when you try to play it on your phone. In a post just above I’ve given a link to download the Shrek 2 Trailer... you can give that a try and let me know what happens.

If the Shrek 2 Trailer does play ok for you on the P900 (which it should)... this could be an indicator that you are missing something in the Mpegable conversion settings.

Posted by: kaZz1985

Hi again

Im using the p900.
I've downloaded the shriek2 trailer and it works perfect.
I will go over the mpegable settings etc again and see if i have missed anything.
Also does the place u transfer the file to on the memory stick affect it? I transferred it to memory stick/video/unfiled.

when u click for info on the movie, I dont see the size of the file, its just says 0kb, all the other movies including the shriek2 trailer show their size, maybe u will know more from what i have said in the last couple of paragraphs, any help much appreicated.

peace out

kaZz

Posted by: kaZz1985

also In video encoding on mpegable in the Preferred Quality section, I dont get to choose smooth motion, mine is, "Very Flexible", "Flexible", Near Full, Full, and instead of "Image Quality/Motion Smoothness" I get Adaptive Framerate.

Do i have the wrong programme or is mine a newer version or something?

I use a built in MS reader on my Sony TR1 notebook to transfer large files to my MS sticks. And yes you should have folders as follows MSSMC> P-Series> Media Files> Video> unfiled is where I place mine.

Well it sounds like you’ve got a file transfer problem to start. If there is 0kb then you don’t have a file there!

So let me ask if you have played the converted MP4 on your computer prior to transferring it to the MS? Is it playing ok on your computer? What is the file size after you converted it?

And it maybe that you are using an old version of Mpegable... what version is it? I recommend you download the latest from their web site. I provided a link in the beginning of the tutorial.

Correction... I just checked myself and realize I have the older version that my Tutorial was based on, version 2.1 and 2.2 is now available. I'm not sure if this is presenting any problems for you (it shouldn't) but I'll have to check this out!

Posted by: kaZz1985

well, they work fine on my PC
I've tried the Paris hilton sex tape, mpg to mp4, 29mb converted to 11mb.

Please help I really want to sort this out, its bugging me mad.

Posted by: vwvwvw

Just to clarify again... you can transfer and play the Shrek2 Trailer without a problem on the P900. And the MP4s that you’ve made using the Tutorial will play ok on your computer but when you transfer them to the phone they will not.

Oh, what about that problem of 0 kb (that you mentioned) for your transferred files?

Also are your file extensions correct .mp4?

What are you using to transfer the files to MS?

Posted by: asci

Hi
so no o ne can help me with this problem of mpegable?

"No input video (Directshow mismatch?)"

Thanx a lot!

Posted by: kaZz1985

yes, shriek 2 is fine and when i get the info on it it shows the file size of the trailer.

im using the software that came with the phone to transfer the files over to the MS.

yes file extensions are correct.

Posted by: kaZz1985

all i do for transfer is copy and paste in the MS stick and the folder i wish to paste in.

could that be the problem...? maybe i can use a different transfer app? suggestions?

Hey asci... I’m sorry that you are also having problems. To be honest, I don’t even understand your question!

I do like to help ppl in the forum but I can’t promise that I’ll be able to remedy all and any problems that arise when attempting to use Mpegable X4 Live. You might want to check with the manufacture of the SW... Send them an email!

Granted I did author this tutorial and can say with confidence that it does work. Other members on this forum have also given feedback as to their success in using it. I wish I had all the answers but sometimes I just have to be honest and say I don’t know what to tell you!

Anyways, I don’t want to pick on your English but I really don’t understand what your experiencing/saying...

Hey guys,

Hows everyone doing?

I've been following 3vw's instructions and it works I can decode at 10FPs for my videos,

however I can't seem to get the P900 to play videos that are mp4 encoded at 30 pfs.

changed the 10.00 hz setting to 30, and tried to compensate the video rate by raising the bitrate to 500 or so.

When I play my mp4 on my comp, it plays perfect, but on the p900, the images freezes at 10 secs into the vidoe. (sound still plays all the way through)

any suggestions on what settings to set Mpegable to get 30 fps (if the p900 is at all possible to play it?)

Posted by: guardian1128

Just followed the guide but when i got to the audio processing tab, all the options were greyed out so i couldn't select anything..

Even in the job-list box where the mpeg1 file was mentioned it said no audio underneath it yet i can play the file in any media player and it does have sound.

Any ideas anyone?

Posted by: ukp900

vwvwvw have you used smartmovie? thats what im using at the moment, the quality is better than mp4, but its like 0.5 secs slower (if you know what i mean)...if you want i can give you my settings and you can check it out. I have a registered version and its really easy to use, just a couple of xlicks and thats it.

www.lonelycatgames.com

just make sure you download the "Xvid" codec for the p900 and one for the program itself. Those are the settings you should. The player which needs to be downloaded to the phone also has a high resolution and the encoder does aout 1 min = 1.3 mb (which is close to one)

i do think its bette than mpegable in the sense majority of the time the films is widescreen and uses the screen to its potential, but the only bad thing is that as mentioned before its like 0.5 seconds slow (not as flowing as i'd like )

if you can come up with some real cool settings for it then that would be awesome. Let me know if you want me to post my settings.

Thanks Guys.
P.s. UK Rocks

just go into Options and change Audio Preroll Time to 0.5, this will adjust the sound delay for you

Posted by: ukp900

Hi, Thanks for that (already changd that)

Sorry forgot to mention its not a delay in sound, its just that the picture looks a tad slower than mp4. dont know if youve noticed?

i have tried loads and loads of different settings but the quality is awesome but just a tad slower than mp4. The audio is in sync which is also good.

Once again, thanks for the reply.

What settings do you use anyways?

ukp900

Yes, I have used SmartMovie but not much as of late since I’ve been focusing my attention on my new Moto Phones (I too purchased SmartMovie about a month ago and posted the iRobot Trailer for P800/P900 users.HERE

I think it’s a very simple to use Converter (and cool Player too) that allows you to achieve about the same results as going through the Mpegable process. Only now I think it’s even better because both P900 and P800 users can share alike in the finished results.

I’d easily recommend SmartMovie if someone is thinking about buying it.

Posted by: ukp900

hi thanks for that vwvwvw

I have come across a minor problem. I just bought a 128mb Sony duo card and i transferred a movie without any problems, but then i put the card in the card reader and it says "the disk is not formatted" i tried it on my laptop and its giving the same answer.

Anyways i formatted the disk on the p900 and i thought it may solve the problem, but it didnt.

What shall i do?? Please help, ive been waiting ages for this mem card

Posted by: afgbossplaya818

Hey Vw

Thanks for the tutorial...
I did all the steps before... and the movies would play perfectly.

Recently I did a formatting of the memory card... and I realized everything was playing slow (videos lagging), I tried to reformat the card back to factory specs but it was still the same... So I went and bought another mem. stick. I tried playing movies now and its still the same... Im not sure whats going on.... The sound is fine, the video just lags... if a person moves in the video you can see a ghost trailing the person...

The videos I had converted awhile ago work fine right now...

The new movies that I converted that have the lagging issue, were orginally WMV could that be one of the causes?

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Thanks

Thanks for the link - From the site can you tell me what the code number is - I have had a look through and it looks like the
S2F3M or the longer length S3M2M, can you please confirm or let me know what the correct code number is so that I can order the correct one.

Many thanks for all your wonderful help with this..

Sandra

The one I'm referring to is the 3.5mm Audio Adapter (SP83A)... last item on the bottom of the page.

I've followed your instructions & burnt a few new movies (Kill Bill, Matrix Revolutions)...is there somewhere I can post them so everyone else can use them?

Is this because I have the demo version of
mpegable?

I seem to have same problem when i'm converting DivX files to MP4. Does anyone happen to know how to solve this problem? I'm loving the picture quality i'm getting right now, but I would be very happy to get some sound out of my p900.

The problem has been solved! I just kept the audio channel the same as input, instead of choosing for a mono audio channel.

top man 3vw
I was so pleased to see someone else with the same mission as me!
to create hi Rez videos, i guessed also that you would need more 128 sticks. and agree with you that its best to have a few of them in your pocket and swap them as needed and then have hi rez movies!
where can i find one of your conversions to try??? DL?
i can not thank you enough for taking the time to make the tutorial etc!
regards

Lisa loo

I also have that same problem with some of my files that I wanna convert. I've noticed that "only" my Japanese music videos have that (directshow mismatch?) error. Any way to get around this Mahalos in advance.

@ vwvwvw

Great stuff

I was working on a similar project last year involving all the available programs on the market. But I had a pc crash part of the way through my testing and lost my notes and data.

So god mad and p*ssed off and never bothered to restart.

So I know how much work you must of put in to provide this great tuturial.

What I would suggest though, if you have the time. Is to turn ALL the information in this thread into an easy to read PDF or MS Word Manual, with chapters, FAQs etc etc.

That would be easier to navigate than going through the various posts in this thread.

You could probably get away with a small fee for producing such a product. I for one think it's worth paying for.

Great stuff.

A credit to HowardForums.

Hi CellGurus,
Millions of thanks to all of you, finally I have setup my P910i with some cools clips,
One little question, Using “mpegable X4 live” I’m making MP4 files for my 910i, while I’m playing any clip it works fine in compact mode, as soon as I use the full screen it continues playing but in slow motion!!! Currently I’m using the 248x186 settings in Cropping and resizing, my display dimension is default 320x240

Thanks ones ogain, special thanks to 3vws to start this thread.

Any ideas?

Manny

you guys can find lots of mp4's at www.mobiledudes.org got that link from esato

What a great movie thread! After reading all of this thread, and a few others, I was really looking forward to trying Mpegable X4 Live. However, it seems as though Dicas has sold to or merged with another company, and is no longer distributing or supporting Mpegable X4 live. The only versions that I've been able to find and download on the internet are older, and don't look anything like the version used in the screen shots that 3VW posted. Does anybody have a later (latest?) copy that you could send me? Also, do you know what version is being used in the screenshots?

Thanks,

Erick

hey vwvw, awsome tutorial. I was able to get it working on my 750 I have one odd thing which I ask everyone here, if unable to answer its okay If I use mpegable to convert any file (wmv, avi, mpeg) to mp4 or 3gp and then try to open it on the computer first it will always say "couldn't open because an invalid sample description was found in the movie". Maybe the file I downloaded was not download properly or what not. But if I use TMPgenc to convert any of those files to mpeg, then use mpegable to convert them to mp4 or 3gp it works!!! Has anyone had this problem?

Has anyone used Mpegable 4X for the W550i/W600i? If so what setting do you use? And any opinions on how this compares to Media Media Maker or Xilisoft programs?

Thanx a lot!

The reason I got this error message was because I didn't have the codec installed on my pc. I installed the DIVX codec for the movie I wanted to convert since it was encoded in DIVX and now the program works fine.

Posted by: kala

thank you i have a P910i and this works fine on that !!!! thanks!

why i can't enter the Bengalboy’s thread? Do I need special level to enter it?
