Audiovox CDM8600
or
Samsung a530s
Which would YOU CHOOSE? and why?

I just got the Audiovox cdm8600 for $10 by hustling the sales guy. I am with Verizon keep in mind.

Now I just want a good overall phone. I hope to buy the data cable and get my own tones and pics into it since verizon sucks and blocks wap's.

What would you do???? My gripes about the audiovox so far are that the menus are a bit complicated, but not impossible, this doesn't bother me. what does is the ear piece level is kinda quiet when not on speaker mode.

So out of the Audiovox cdm8600 and the Samsung a530s, which would you pick? Keep in mind I want to data cable in and get my tones loaded.
Any replies appreciated.
Thanks
F S

I don't really know anything about the a530 except that it's digital only, so don't get it if you need analog. I got my 8600 because I needed a speakerphone, and, at the time, it was the only option I had for a speakerphone with Verizon. It has some quirks, but so do all phones. Overall, I'm pleased with it, and it's a lot cheaper than the a530.

If you're going to get into the data cable stuff, keep in mind that Verizon users have been unsuccessful in getting pics to show on the phone (even after copying the files to the phone). Ringtones work fine.

Thanks for the replies guys,
To start, yes, I have this thing all the way up and it still isn't loud enough for my liking....but the speakerphone is kinda cool.

As far as the phone itself, it is pretty cool. The menus are a bit confusing but I get around just fine. I can get the a530s for only $60 right now so that is why I am debating on it.

anyone else have an opinion on these 2 phones?
thanks again

Here's a HoFo thread from people with the 8600 and their opinion.
Worth a read.

Do an additional search for more 8600 info or for the A530

Ended up returning the CDM8600 and got the a530s.

I liked both phones in different ways. Speakerphone was nice, and ringer/vibrator settings on the cdm8600. but the a530s is a bit louder to hear, ringer is WAY LOUDER. The ringer speaker is on the outside as the cdm8600 has it on the inside so when its closed it isn't too loud.

Overall, I am happier with the a530s. And you can buy the data cable for$20 at radio shack and have your own pictures and tones loaded on in a bout 20 minutes.

good luck

Personally, I would've chosen the Samsung also.
However, with my cell phone provider, the prices of the Samsungs are ridiculous.
I was able to get the 8600 for $0.
The cheapest clamshell Samsung was $200

Damn, and that didn't even have a colour screen.

So now that I have the 8600, I'm going to find all the positives about it.

As for Samsung, my view of their products is that their product range is way to broad.
They make everything and specialize in nothing.
Samsung phones are average reliable phones, that's all.
But the fact that they are so pricey just keeps me away from it at this time.
Once they bring down the prices, I'll give them another try.

As for now,

8600 is a good phone aside from a few small things like uploading pictures is almost useless...
the address book rules...the ringtones are easy to deal with with a data cable and bitpim...voxeditor2.1 (countless ringtones). Good battery life...voice services are sweet...

big issues:
1) I havent found out how to disable to tones on power on/power off (very annoying it takes like 10 seconds to boot up grrrr)...
ummmm hmmmm i guess there isnt too many more unless you bought your phone to play games or if you like to play with your phone more than you like to use ur phone for what its for...

someone can correct me if im wrong

Easy stuff.

But I can't understand why you like the phonebook.
I hate the fact when searching for a name that you may have to input more than one letter to get a better search string.
Ah well, I guess I will live with it.

As for the power up melody, easy...
I see you're with Bell, thus this will work.

MENU - SETTINGS - SOUNDS - ALERT - ON/OFF MELODY
OR MENU - 5 - 1 - 4 - 6 and set to off.

Cheers..

It's freakin' garbage. My girlfriend got one yesterday and it sucks! I've never seen an interface that required so much navigation for basic functions, ie: dialing a number from your phonebook. I think we're going to take it back tommorrow.

It's 2004, the phones out today should be easy to use Period. Motorola and LG understand this concept, why doesn't Audiovox?

Don't get this phone. I'm not going to waste anymore time talking about it.
