Loading Slider Ringtones/Wallpapers via data cable HOWTO

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: ozien

OK, since so many people are asking, I have taken the time to compile the information about BitPim, Wallpapers and Ringers into one single HOWTO file. I'm sure I will need to add or modify things as this goes along, but here it is all nice and typed. Cheers.
P.S. is there any way to get a Moderator to make this thread Sticky so it's right at the top for everyone when they come here???

General Stuff:
-You *cannot* download wallpapers to your Slider any other way. You *cannot* download
---ringers that aren't bought from Virgin any other way. Please prove me wrong and write a
---HOWTO explaining the process.
-There is at least one other way to download files to the phone, using a program called
---GAGIN. GAGIN only runs on NT-based Windows platforms (Windows NT, 2000 or XP). BitPim
---has versions for NT or 95 based Windows OS, as well as MacOS 10.1 and Linux.

Hardware I'm using:
-Kyocera SE47 Slider phone (duh)
-Kyocera Serial port data cable for SE47. USB may work as well.

Software I'm using (all FREEWARE):
-Bitpim: http://bitpim.sourceforge.net
---use to upload files to your phone, or download files from your phone.
---Version 0.62 will work, 0.7-test1 should also work but I haven't tried.
-IrvanView: http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967.html
---use to make the 128x116x24bpp Windows BMP files for wallpaper.
---Be sure to get the base package. You'll probably also want the plug-ins as well, but I'm
---not sure you need them
-Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net
---use to resample recordings to 16kHz mono and save them as 24kbps CBR MP3 files
---you need to get the 1.2.0 beta version of Audacity. The 1.0.0 'stable' version wont work
---for this.
-LAME MP3 encoder: http://mitiok.free.fr
---use to allow Audacity to save resampled recordings direct to MP3 format
---You only need the DLL, you can ignore the rest of the stuff in the archives. Put the DLL
---in your windows/system directory, the tell Audacity where to find it. (It will ask the
---first time you try to encode an MP3 file.)

Using BitPim:
-If you have previously installed the Kyocera Desktop software, UNINSTALL it first.
-Download version of 0.62 of BitPim and install it
-Connect your computer to your phone via the data cable for the SE47
-Launch BitPim
-Go to the 'View' menu, and make sure 'View Filesystem' is checked
-Click on the Filesystem tab to see the directory structure of your phone.
-Open the /user directory on your phone. This is were everything is going. It will also
---cause BitPim to attempt to connect to your phone.
-To save a file to your phone, right-click the directory to save in and select 'New File...'
---Pick the file you want to download from the dialog box and click OK. You can't rename
---things in the dialogue, so rename any files you need to before downloading them to your
---phone.
-To download a file from your phone, right-click the filename and select 'Save As...'
-To Delete files, right-click the filename and select 'Delete' (duh)

Making Wallpapers:
-Use IrfanView or your favorite image editor to make a graphic file that is the right size
---and color depth for the Slider. The largest image the Slider can display is 128 by 116
---pixels. (The screen is 128x128, but the top 12 rows are reserved for status icons.)
---Images must be 24-bit color depth (24bpp). I assume you can figure out how to do this
---on your own.
-Once the image is formatted correctly, save it as a Windows BMP file.
-Rename the file to 'BmpX', where 'X' is a number from 1 to 25 (no leading zeros). The file
---must have NO extension ('Bmp6.bmp' WON'T work). You may need to get to a command prompt
---to do this, as Windows makes it hard to remove registered file extensions.

Downloading Wallpapers:
-Save the renamed file on to your phone using BitPim. Put the file in the directory
---'/user/mypictures'. Remember it *must* be named 'Bmp1' to 'Bmp25' with no extension.
-Open the Doodler application on your Slider, under Games.
-Go to 'My Pictures' in Doodler. Scroll down using the arrow pad until you see the image
---you just downloaded.
-Make sure you DO NOT click the 'Edit' button. If the image is large, you'll probably crash
---your phone and have to take the battery out to restart it.
-Click 'Assign' and select 'Wallpaper'. Click OK
-Close your phone and admire your new wallpaper!

Making Ringers:
-Ringers can be either MIDI files (*.mid) or MP3 files (*.mp3). MP3 files must be encoded
---at 24kbps constant bit rate. MP3's must be at 16,000 samples/second (16 kHz). MP3's
---must be MONO (not STEREO). You can use Audacity (or something similar) to split a
---stereo recording in to two mono tracks, then mix them into a single mono track. Again,
---I leave it to you to figure this out. This is a phone HOWTO, not a recording HOWTO.

Downloading Ringers:
-Save the MIDI or MP3 file, *with* the appropriate extension, on to your phone using BitPim.
---Put all ringer files (MIDI or MP3) in to '/user/sound/dnld' directory. Remember you can
---only have 10 downloaded ringers on your Slider, so you may need to delete some off first.
-Open your phone, go to 'Settings - Sounds - Ringtones' and your downloaded files should be
---at the top of the list.
-You must do the above step before the ringtones will show up in 'Settings - Sounds - My
---Ringtones'. If you go here before opening the Ringtones menu, you won't see the files
---you just downloaded.
-Just select the file you want to be your ringer and enjoy!

Don't forget that adding large files to the Slider will cause it to act funny. I loaded a 250K mp3 file and my phone took a very long time to boot up. The mp3 would not play, and the phone was having problems displaying the menus.

So be careful.

Nice write up. I was going to write one, but I figured everything that I found out was in the first couple of replies in my thread.

Ah, I have not tried filling my phone up, so I didn't know this. I'm paranoid about deleting things (after backing them up to the PC of course) to make room, for fear that I'll break the thing by filling up it's little memory. Biggest MP3 I have downloaded so far is only about 126K (42 seconds), and it seems to work fine. So the cutoff is somewhere between 126 and 250K...

Also, 24kbps seems to be the only encoding choice. 16kbps didn't work. Haven't tried 8kbps, but I'm sure the quality would be horrendous anyway.

I can confirm that the USB cable from Kyocera does work with BitPim. In Settings > Com Port > Browse: It shows up (for me) as "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3)" I had installed the cable & drivers prior to installing BitPim

Installing the cable went as follows:
1. Plug into USB port.
2. Windows pops up with the new USB device wizard
3. Direct the wizard to use the drivers provided on the CD that came with the cable.

I've added a bunch of video game midis to my phone.

Anyone have any clue how to do animated screensavers? I was thinking maybe concatonate a bunch of bitmap files. I can't even find where the stock screensavers are saved on the phone (maybe in rom ???)

My Mp3 tracks are extremely slow at 16,000 hz

Posted by: ozien

Two possibilities here.

1) Most likely, you're making your MP3's and them checking them out by playing them with WinBlowz Media player before downloading them to your phone. Media player can't seem to handle low bitrate MP3's correctly. I get the same thing when I play them on my computer (pitch drops and tempo slows down, like a 45 record being played at 33 RPM), but they sound just right on the Slider.

2) The only other possibility is that you're changing the playback rate without downsampling. If you play a 44.1kHz file at 16kHz, it's going to be too slow. When you convert bitrates, you have to downsample from 44.1kHz recording to 16kHz. But I doubt this is your problem. Just try downloading the MP3 to your phone and see what it sounds like. It should be OK

How do u even make a mp3 only 100 something kb for 42 secs? My 45sec mono mp3 is at 700kb? How do u make it so small?

Well, a quick calculation reveals that your MP3's are encoded at:

(700kiloBytes * 8 bits/Byte) = 5600kilobits
(5600kilobits / 45 seconds) = 124.44444 kilobits/second (kbps)

So you're probably encoding at 128kbps instead of 24kbps. 128kbps MP3 files won't play on your Slider. You need to figure out how to make your encoder produce MP3's at lower bitrates. They *must* be encoded at 24kbps, no more and no less, to play.

what is the maximum size mp3 that u can downlaoad on the slider?

Posted by: ozien

Well bleah. Can't edit my original post after 2 hours of posting it? Anyway, I've revised the HOWTO slightly. Text follows:

Slider Data Cable HOWTO v1.0.1 (1/10/04)
All information compiled from various threads on the Kyocera hardware forum of Howard's
Forum (www.howardforums.com). WARNING: You will be directly manipulating the file system
of your phone with BitPim. You can render your phone inoperable if you alter or delete the
incorrect file! Use caution - if you screw up your phone it's your fault, not mine.

Virgin Mobile / General Stuff:
-You *cannot* download wallpapers to your VM Slider any other way.
BitPim is
---also more versatile (a) in what directories you can access, and (b) in allowing you to
---download files from your phone, as well as uploading files to it.

Hardware I'm using:
-Kyocera SE47 Slider phone (duh) - Virgin Mobile V5 MTV edition
-Kyocera Serial port data cable for SE47. USB works as well, but you need USB drivers.

Software I'm using (all FREEWARE):
-BitPim: http://BitPim.sourceforge.net
---use to upload files to your phone, or download files from your phone.
---Version 0.62 will work, 0.7-test1 should also work but I haven't tried.
-IrfanView: http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967.html
---use to make the 128x116x24bpp Windows BMP files for wallpaper.
---Be sure to get the base package. You'll probably also want the plug-ins as well, but I'm
---not sure you need them
-Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net
---use to resample recordings to 16kHz mono and save them as 24kbps CBR MP3 files
---you need to get the 1.2.0 beta version of Audacity. The 1.0.0 'stable' version wont work
---for this.
-LAME MP3 encoder: http://mitiok.free.fr

---You only need the DLL, you can ignore the rest of the stuff in the archives. Put the DLL
---in your windows/system directory, the tell Audacity where to find it. (It will ask the
---first time you try to encode an MP3 file.)
-QualComm Purevoice: http://www.cdmatech.com/solutions/p...ce_download.jsp
---use to playback QCP files downloaded from the Voice Recorder directory on the Slider.
---Can also be used to create recordings to upload to the Slider for playback. The
---converter is a separate command-line application that can convert between QCP and WAV
---format.

Installing / Using BitPim:
-Bear in mind that the BitPim software was designed for use with the LG VX4400 phone,
---not the Slider. However, both use the QualComm CDMA chip, and are similar enough
---that BitPim can read/write the filesystem on the Slider. No other functions of BitPim
---work on the Slider however.
-Open the '/' directory on your phone.
-To Delete files, right-click the filename and select 'Delete' (duh).
-You can seriously screw up your phone with Save/Delete operations, so use caution! Make SURE
---you know what you're deleting or replacing before you proceed.

Downloading Voice Memos:
-Voice Memos are stored in the /VoiceDB/All/Memos directory on your phone. All have names
---of the form 'Memxxxxx.qcp', where 'xxxxx' is a 5-digit number (such as 'Mem00014.qcp').
-Simply right-click the file to download from your phone, select 'Save As...', then select
---the directory to save the file in. QCP files can be played back using the QualComm
---Purevoice Recorder/Player for Windows, or converted in to WAV files using the converter
---application (both freeware at QualComm's Eudora site). QCP converted in to WAV files
---result in 16-bit PCM, mono, 8kHz WAV files. (Very low quality recording.) WAV files
---of this same format (16-bit PCM, mono, 8kHz sample rate) can be converted in to QCP files
---using the same converter application, and then uploaded to your phone (see below).

Uploading Voice Memos:
-First, you need to record a short Voice Memo using your phone. Any length will do, as you
---just need a file on the phone to replace.
-Next, open BitPim and find the memo you just recorded in /VoiceDB/All/Memos
-Right click this file, and select 'Overwrite...'. Select the QCP file you wish to upload
---to your phone, then click OK.
-Go back to Voice Recorder on the Slider, and play back the memo. It should now be the
---recording you just uploaded.
-This is necessary to be able to see the recording in Voice Recorder. Simply uploading a
---new file will not allow you to play it back. It won't show up on the list of recorded
---memos.

Unknown. The largest MP3 you can upload is however much free memory there is left on your phone. However, Xanthus reports that a 250K MP3 ringer causes the phone to work very slowly. In addition, you probably don't want an MP3 ringer that is longer than about 30-40 seconds, since it stops playing once your Voicemail picks up. There's little point in having a 5-minute ringtone file when you'll never hear more than the first 30 seconds or so.

Only way I know is to open a DOS box and use the rename command. Put the item to rename on your Desktop (Windows 98/ME, dunno about XP), then go to "Start menu - Run" and type COMMAND. You should land at a DOS box with a 'C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>' prompt. Then just type 'rename mystuff.bmp Bmp5' or whatever. Then type 'exit' and the DOS window closes. Now your file should be renamed to 'Bmp5' and it's ready to download to the phone.

There is a (possibly) slightly easier way to do this. Open up Doodler on the Slider and make up a Doodle - doesn't matter what it is since you're going to replace it. Save the Doodle, then go to BitPim and use the 'Overwrite...' command to replace the Doodle file with your wallpaper. (Right-click the Doodle file name in BitPim, select 'Overwrite...', then select your wallpaper BMP in the dialogue box, then click OK. This replaces the content of the file on your phone but keeps the original name.)

I prefer to rename the files on the computer myself, but you can always try the 'Overwrite...' if you just can't get DOS to work.

SWEET! I just got a couple pictures sucessfully on my slider, as well as 2 ringtones from tag-tag using this method.. I am on US Cellular, running windows xp pro, and using Bitpim 0.62

The only thing is that I can't get mp3's to work. Seems like they kind of play, but very very very slow and don't even sound like a song (this is on the phone, NOT on the computer)..

Posted by: ayahuasca

You've probably not converted your mp3s to the right sample rate and bit rate. 16khz, 24 kbs mono. Someone listed some useful software you can use to convert in a recent thread; look for that.

I did that, using the software recommended in this thread..

Has anyone tried to encode mp3's differently to work wit the slider? Such as a different bit rate, or different frequency? (what I am trying to ask is if there is a possibility that u can encode higher quality mp3's on ur slider to work)

Posted by: TigerX87

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE OUT THERE WHO HELPED ME, YES I GOT LIKE 6 WALLPAPERS ON MY PHONE, i didnt have to pay any money "thank god" and i got all the free shareware that was listed, followed the instructions and got the thing workin, oh yeah i got the usb cable from kyocera and im runnin windows xp home.... Thanks agian.......... if anyone figures out anything new lets all know....

I have tried different bitrates, with no success. 8, 16 and 32kbps didn't work. 24kbps stereo didn't work. I haven't tried high quality (128kbps or higher) bitrates, but I wouldn't recommend it. Phone has limited memory (about 1.5meg I believe) and bad things apparently happen if you fill it up.

Posted by: ericr74

Cool... glad to hear this is working well. So my only question: what is the cheapest place to buy a USB or serial cable?

Posted by: spyderman2k

anyone know how to get rid of the distortion when playin mp3s? Ive already tried normalizing but still get it.

Posted by: spyderman2k

^^
nvm figured it out.

anyways i tried GAGIN with my phone, and it actully tells you how much space is in the VM slider.. its 2336K so its about 2.3mb in total.

Posted by: TigerX87

actually i dont know where you could get the cable cheaper, i got mines from kyocera

Posted by: RensoreK

Can someone post a HOW TO on getting Audacity to re-encode these files? I got them to 16000Hz but they run slow, and I can't seem to get the rest going, tried reading some of the website, no help. Can someone help me out please? pretty please?

Posted by: mrt32487

After u change it to 16,000khz u have to change the speed by 175 percent. (Go to Effects in the toolbar) That should bring the speed back to normal. hope that helps.

Posted by: az1324

I can't get the USB cable to work with BitPim. It shows up in the device manager as COM4 but Bitpim doesn't recognize it as an available com port. Any tips?

The directory isn't there? Interesting.... Well, I would first suggest opening 'My Ringtones' menu on your Slider. That may be enough to create the directory on your phone. If not, try making the directory manually using BitPim. Drop the ringer file in the new directory, then check Ringtones to see if it's there. (You need to check Ringtones before looking in 'My Ringtones' or the new ringer won't show up for some reason.) The directory was there already on my phone, but I had popped the $2 to download a ringer already. This made it easy to actually locate the folder where downloaded ringers are stored, so it was worth it. Maybe the directory isn't created until you download a ringer from VM, so you may need to make it manually...

Srry to change the subject a tiny tiny bit, but has anyone had any success reading the MSL off the slider using BitPim? Example

Thanks!!

There are a number of threads and a good "how to" guide for wallpapers and ringtones

<http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...er+%2Bwallpaper>

I've ordered the USB data cable from Kyocera and am waiting for it to arrive; I'll let you know how it goes.

Been creating wallpapers in the meantime and sizing them properly to get them ready for transfer!

Posted by: Viral_Weaponry

Remember if u feel up your sliders memory with mp3s the phone can give u an error and it doesnt boot up, (as my experience with 3 sliders lol), so dont exceed from 250kb and dont send more than 2 or 3 mp3s of that file size cause u will be mad as I was, jeje.
Just to let u all know.

Posted by: derekhb

I'm wondering if GAGIN isn't working because i still have the Kyocera Desktop Software still installed? Could that be a reason its not working?

Posted by: VMvirginmobile

I ordered the KYOCERA desktop software so I can quickly and easliy upload stuff to non-virgin mobile sliders....

Posted by: derekhb

Well with the Kyocera Desktop software you can only upload the KWS ringtones.

Posted by: derekhb

Hey, how do you do the command prompt and change the .bmp extension just to BMP3 instead of BMP3.bmp? Thanks!

Seriously...read the topic first before you ask questions. I remember some people asking how much space the Slider had in its memory AFTER 3 people already stated that someone had problems with a 250kb sized MP3.

I think it would be far easier to set Windows to show file extensions, then it would be real easy to change them without dealing with the command prompt.

Explorer Window -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab -> uncheck "Hide file extensions of known types" -> Hit "Apply to all Folders" button. Now you can click once on a .bmp file, wait one second and click it again. Then you can rename it, chopping off the extension. Or Right-Click on it and hit "rename".

Hey.

I just got my cable (thank god) and I tried many many different combinations, and I got it to work @ 32kbs and 16000 Hz.

It sounds alot better, and amazingly, on the one that i used, it only made 1kb of a difference. Dunno why.

Anyways, a good way to get ringtones is to rip them off of modtones. Just go to modtones.com , and use an ASF recorder... (i used the one off of DiVX's webpage.. google search ).

Use your respected MP3 converting program (i used Nero Wave Editor) and Do IT.

This biggest piece of information left out in the process of making your own Mp3's is that you need to change your preferences before you save your files, or your just going to end up encoding them at 128 bitrate again.

Go to Edit>Preferences>File Formats

You should see MP3 Export Setup.

Change the Bitrate to 24.

All will be good after that. Follow the instruction stated before. But this is the one thing that is overlooked for anyone new. It took me a few hours myself, trying to figure out why the bitrates where being exported so high. Once I found this, everything worked as above.

Ah what the Hell, might as write a guide.

Step 1. Go to Edit>Preferences>File Formats

You should see MP3 Export Setup.

Change the Bitrate to 24. (You should only have to do this once, because it will remember the setting from now on. But it's the most important step.)

Step 2. Load the song you want to edit

Step 3. Select the portion of the Mp3 that you want to make a ringtone. 40 to 55 seconds. Anything more is a waste (because your voice mail will kick in.)

Step 4. Edit>Trim or Cntl+T. This trims your song down to what you want.

Step 5. Click on the song name in the edit window, a drop down menu should appear.

Step 6. Set Sample format to 24=bit (When you change this it take your computer a few seconds, to refresh)

Step 7. Set the Rate to 16000hz (This is just below where you set the sample format. (When you change this the song will be really slow, so we need to speed it up again.)

Step 8. Highlight the entire track, Click and drag. (It might help to zoom out a little bit. (under the view tab or Ctrl+3)

Step 9. With the track highlighted go to Effect>Change Speed
Change the percentage to 175% (You won't be able to select change speed if you don't have your track selected.) Wait for your computer to process, check your playback, should be playing the right speed now.

Step 10. Go to the Track name drop down window, and select Split Stereo Track.

Step 11. (You have two tracks now, one for the Left and one for the Right, so they need to be combined into one mono track.) Go to the drop down menu for each track and set them to Mono.

Step 12. File>Export Mp3 (You should get a warning saying the the tracks will be mixed down to a single mono channel. This is good.) Name your Mp3 and click the save button.

Step 13. Go to where you saved your file and right click & check properties. Your file size should be somewhere in the range of (100K to 180K) Depends on how long your track is. If it's larger than 250K you did something wrong. Go back and re-follow the steps.

Your done, follow the intructions on where your suppose to place track on your phone.

Enjoy your new tunes..

Mack Daddy

Yeah, but how do you change the bitrate to 24?

How do you transfer wallpapers to the phone?

How much memory is on the phone?

Okay, if you don't know by now, I'm just playing... ×××× some of these people ask the same questions over and over again!

I am bumping this thread for those of us who have recently recieved a data cable for the Slider (like me).

Posted by: Darklily72

Why hasn't this thread become "sticky" yet? I think it's an important thread that SHOULD be kept at the top..it would cut down on a lot of repeated questions about this process!

I also tried getting a midi to download to my phone (using the /user/sound/dnld directory suggested)..... didn't work. It wasn't there.

BUT after snooping around and copying a midi several places, if you download it (with bitPIM) to
/user/sound/ringer/
it WILL work. Your ringer will show up ALPHABETIZED in your list of regular ring tones.

This was done using a USB cable and BITPIM. It seems to work in a limited way with GAGIN, with the higher comm port patch, but it can't actually see any files. Bitpim works much better.

Hope this was helpful!

Hey, this is probably a really dumb question, but I wanted to know: This howto will work for verizon service right?

Also, if anyone needs help with encoding mp3's or anything with pics/sound, lemme know and I can help.

Hey, thanks so much for posting this! I finally figured out how to download the ringers because of this!

Posted by: ROBOCUB

OK, I finally managed to upload some mp3 ringers to my Kyocera Slider SE47 (Verizon). I used Bitpim .7 test 9 for Windows. The Mac version really doesn't work, at least I had no luck with it.

Apparently the only directory on the phone that seems usable to put ringers in is the user/sounds/ringers. I uploaded some small mp3 in the format that has been explained 16kHz/24kbps/mono. The mp3 ringers only ring once when my phone is called. Perhaps midi files repeat as a ringer as they should until the call is answered. Anyone have any insight to this phenomenon/problem?

Also, question for anyone...the MySounds folder, what the hell are those sounds for? I can't assign them or delete them. ANd there are (empty) slots, but can't seem to figure out what to do with them or how to get sounds in that section.

I'm having a problem with the cable and my GF's slider phone. I have my LG VX-6000 hooked up with BitPim and it works fine but when I try all the steps listed in the posts it doesn't recognize her phone. Could it be because my phone is the main phone for BitPim? Should I try installing BitPim on another computer so her phone is the default phone on that?
Thanks.

So you're probably encoding at 128kbps instead of 24kbps. 128kbps MP3 files won't play on your Slider. You need to figure out how to make your encoder produce MP3's at lower bitrates. They *must* be encoded at 24kbps, no more and no less, to play.

I am using the audacity program to create mp3's. I am taking a section about 30 seconds worth, spliting the tracks into 2 making one mono, closing the other one, Making that track 24 bit, making that same track 16000 hz , speeding up the track by 175% as mentioned in this thread, exporting as mp3 format using the lame dll file in its own directory (because I couldnt get into the windows system directory, I did try though)and my files end up being right around 500 k. I have done this multiple times and am still having the same problem. I read this post and really don't understand how I am creating these files at that much higher bitrate (though it seems like that is what is occurring). If someone could just help me out here I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Posted by: brewynz

Check the output settings on Audacity. I did the same thing until I realized that the program was saving the newly created file at 128 bits instead of 24. Click on File>Preferences>File Formats, and look at the MP3 Export Setup box towards the bottom. Set that to 24 and you should be good to go.

Posted by: neednewphone

Thanks ! That was the problem... Got it working now.

to you ozien.......

i want to thank you for taking the time and effort for that HOW2 primer. i'm one of those diehard 98SE users with the SE47 slider and had fun making custom mp3's incl buzz lightyear from toy story.
if you ever get around to playing with the onboard firmware, spec. custom shortcuts, i would love to hotkey into the network/active line area.

thanx again..............

After figuring how to add ringtones to my Slider phone by using Bitpim, I now want to delete some duplicate ringers from my phone. Could I just use the Kyocera Phone Desktop to overwrite the ringers. I tried to right click and select Delete using Bitpim but it didn't delete the ringer. Any tips would be appreciated.

Yes, it works on the Verizon Slider. I've done it. You have to follow the instructions which are in this forum in detail.

3 items however:
1- I managed to upload mp3 files but they only play once. So unless they are long, it doesn't really make for a good ringer.
2- I was not able to upload midi files contrary to what other in this forum have said that you can.
3- Uploading files to the user/sounds folder seems to be the only place that the phone will recognize sounds. Uploading to the slidesnds folder arent recognized

Radio Shack sells a $21 Kyocera USB cable... has anyone tried these cables out?

Also, anyone else tried the Mac OSX version of BitPim with a Slider and had success? I don't have the Slider yet, and I have access to both a Mac and PC, so it's no biggie if I have to do it from the office, but I was just curious.

I'm a musician, so I'm really looking forward to composing my own ringtones

also, i'm wondering if games from other phones work on the slider.

Well what about calling radio shack and ask them?? Also, I think you can return things to radios shack if they don't work, right!?

I'll call them tomorrow and ask. It shouldn't be to hard.

It'll be awesome if it works!! Hope it does

"LG-VX4400 on COM1: The phone is not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew." Can somebody please help me. I am using the data cable that I got from Radio Shack for the LG VX6000, if this isn't working for the end of the day I am going to take this back and try a different one. Thanks in advance.

After 13 hours I finally got it to work...YAY!!!

This exact same thing was happening to me..uninstall Bitpim, then reinstall with the 0.7test9 version..it finally worked for me with that version.

Posted by: thefuriousmonk

i have tried and i have tried...maybe my se-47 is a different model? i followed the instructions to the letter (except that under menu - settings - sounds i don't have ringers, i have ringer types) i have tried using bitpim .62 and .7.12 with the usb cable model txdta10054. i have also noticed that with bitpin in the default sounds directory, there are many additional pre-installed ringtones that don't show up on my list either...what is going on, i love this phone but i refuse to buy ringtones. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME

Posted by: Lotus Chief

i just got my kyocera USB cable today, and was able to get a ringer on there. my only question before i continue is: how do i find out how much free space I have on my phone? becuz on my computer da ringer i made said it was only 104kb, but in BitPim .62 the size says '27509805'. oh, and whats with the weird date next to the file in BitPim? (11/01/76)?????

Posted by: DraculSoul

Alright, I really hope the questions I have here havn't already been answered but I couldn't find it anywhere on here.

I use a Mac running OS X 10.3. I'm about to get the SE44 through Alltel and I want to be able to use MP3 files as ringers on my phone. I can make the MP3s using iTunes at the appropriate bit rate, etc. but I don't know how to trim the files down in time. I mean I obviously don't want to put a 5 min. song on my phone when you only hear 25 sec. (not to mention the file size factor). If anyone knows a decent program that works in OS X to do this I would greatly appreciate the knowledge.

My second question is, has anyone actually gotten the bitpim program to work with a slider using Mac OS X? I've seen some people mention that there is a version of it for Macs but no one that I've seen has actually said whether it works with the SE44/47.

Please, please let me know about this. It would be unbelievably appreciated!

unfortunately, I could not get bitpim to recognize my phone. I now make all of the files I need (mp3's, pics, etc.) with OSX, but use Virtual PC to get it onto the phone. If anyone gets it to work with OSX, let us know!

Posted by: DJElement

Thanks so much for posting this how to guide. For anyone trying to download ringers with a SE47 from verizon, it works with the radioshack cable and bitPIM .7 -- make sure to download the drivers from FutureDial's website. You dont even have to plug in the phone after you install the software, just the usb cable, and it will detect that new virtual com port. Then connect the cell phone and load bitPIM. At least on verizon phones, the ringtones are to be downloaded in user/sound/ringer

thanks a lot.. this is a great board

Posted by: n0ize

wall papers can be made smaller (sometimes half the size). someone had mentioned that you could save your wallpaper as a png and it would work. very true. follow the exact same steps at you would with the bmp only have irfanView convert the image to a png instead of a bmp.

Posted by: bova80

tried it i can view it under my pictures but it makes the background white for some reason. also when i had a background taht was 45kb my phone restarted it self for no reason, not sure why or if that was the reason.

Posted by: reddog_90

what drivers have people installed to get this to work? ive tried and tried and my comptuer still wont see the phone

Posted by: solidshot27

How do i take the .bmp off of my pictures???

Posted by: php486

you have to use teh dos command prompt go to run and then type command. in the prompt

type rename 1.bmp Bmp1

Posted by: rc-dude

I'm having trouble with this... I followed the instructions exactly, and i've spent days reading on here to make sure i'm not missing something before posting, so excsuse me if I'm not getting something. I have the verizon slider, and the #19 vx6000 cable from radioshack. I treid the bitpim .62 first, and could not get it to work, so i went to a freinds house and got the newest one and tried it too, and I keep getting an error. It says something about a com or port. I went through everything trying to set it up, but it didn't work on my freinds PC or mine, so I'm figuring that it is something I'm not doing right instead of the software. Can someone please run me step by step on getting it to recognise my phone, and after that i'm sure I can get it working.

thanks,
keith

Posted by: cabajohn

solidshot27 - You can change the file extension from within windows..

1. In Windows Explorer: Select -- Tools menu > Folder Options.
2. Then select the view tab. Make sure the "Hide file extensions for known file types" is UNCHECKED
3. Browse to the folder where the pictures are stored.
4. Right click the file and select rename.
5. Remove the extension (Change "Bmp1.bmp" to "Bmp1") and hit enter.
Windows will tell you that if you change a filename extension, the file may become unusable.
5. Select yes.

The file will still be a bitmap file it just won't have the file extension .bmp.

I work at Radioshack so I have a bit of experience with both the cables and the phones.

The driver you need is available for download from the FutureDial website. You have to select the driver for the vx6000 (since that's the cable you're using).

Once you've installed the driver, your system will assign a COM port to the USB cable. When you are in Bitpim, instead of using auto detect, select the correct COM port, the one assigned to your cable. If the system assigns you a COM port above COM4, you'll have to download the patch (which allows bitpim to use COM5-8). If you are able to see the VX-6000 as a COM port but it still won't connect (it took a few tries for me sometimes), then you may have a phone that simply will not work.

I'm not sure why some phones simply won't let you use a cable. I've come across exactly 2 of the SE47s so far that just were never recognized. I don't know why, perhaps they had older or newer software, or whatever. Periodically it doesn't work though. Tough luck.

Posted by: reddog_90

what do you do if it doesnt assign the cable a com port

Posted by: Torchin

Reinstall the driver.

If it still doesn't work then get a new cable. It'll assign a COM port even with no phone attached.

Posted by: BeeZaa

i own a SE-44 slider, will i be able to put .mp3 ringtones on it, i already made some i just have to wait till my usb kit comes

Posted by: pgens

It will take MP3's but look at other threads to determine formats and how much to upload. If you overload its memory the phone crashes and isn't recoverable... you'll have a new silver brick on your hands. Personally I stick with MIDIs for this reason.

Posted by: reddog_90

it must be the cable then cause ive installed the drivers several times and it does absolutely nothing

it was a vx6000 cable i got off ebay

oh well, guess i'm screwed

Posted by: Torchin

Try getting the actual cable from Radio Shack. They're only 20.99, and then you know for sure it is the right one. You can always return it (30 days, w/ packaging & receipt).

It is also possible the cable you have isn't a futuredial cable, in which case the FD drivers won't work.

Posted by: mightytrever77

just some quick notes for u guys:

.BMP files are 44kb of size on the phone, but if u use .PNG files they will be less in size (25KB to 30KB) and u dont need to take the extension off either, also, the ringers should be no more then 25secs since the phone won't ring that long, this would make the file size around 60KB or less, and on extra help I use Photoshop 6.0 (cant tell what else would be good but search at the download website) incase u need a imaging softw and also goldwave (http://www.goldwave.com) for .mp3 files editing and (http://www.download.com) Anvil Studio for .mid files editing.

mp3: 24kb 16kh mono
wallpapers: 128 width x 116 height

note1: the midi files play faster then mp3 due to size so i advice to select a good mp3 if u gonna have it as a ringer.

note2: the png files lag to display from another on the phone, but is less space use on the phone and also they cannot be edited on the phone since they are lock.

Just my 2 cents.

so what cable do you need from radioshack? is it a cable for the LG VX6000?

Posted by: bikerman

Hey I just bought my new lg vx6000 cable from radio shack the future dial one. I am sorry if this has already been posted before but this thread is extremely long to read every single post. I was wondering what usb drivers I need in order to get my se47 vm phone working with bitpim. Thanks

Posted by: slyslider

hey I'm using the kyocera usb cord and I plugged in my sister's phone into the cord and did it on the bitpim but now that hers was in I cant get into my files and stuff anymore, what should I do?

Posted by: Glottis

I registered to say thanks to everyone involved in the making of this thread, I was busy working up the courage to buy a serial cable on the kyocera site for like $40 with no real certainty how to do it, but after this thread I spent $20 at radioshack and now have loads of annoying ringtones on my Verizon SE47. So Far:

Mr Bungle - Carousel (121k)
Queen - Bicycle Race (106k)
Raffi - Bananaphone (113k, 2x fast)
The Beatles - Dont Let Me Down (114k)
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out (114k)
Kill Bill Sound 1* (49kb)
Kill Bill Sound 2** (117k)

*that annoying siren from whenever she sees someone she is about to axe
**woo hoo, woo hoo hooo etc.

All of these sound great and recognizeable. On a slightly related note, with BitPim I discovered that my phone had several ringtones that were never available to me, such as this odd remix of the Tetris theme. Anyway, all of these are now on my phone without any noticeable slowdowns of the sort. Each are around 40 seconds, with the exception of the first kill bill sound. Thanks again for the help, dudes

edit: here are some pictures for those who might be confused

Posted by: reddog_90

i finally got one that works i bought the cable as shown in the picture above and installed the futuredial dirivers for the vx6000 phone, and i was able to upload wallpapers and ringers, midi and mp3 using the newest version of bitpim

Posted by: mightytrever77

using Gagin:

I realize that when I'm about to upload a file to my phone I can change the name that I want it to be displayed on the phone as, for example, the files that should be bmp1 bmp2 and blah blah, I can actually give them any name i want, and it would be displayed, however i rather use PNG files cause i can upload without removing extensions and also renaming them at all, and on another note my PNG files can be set as wallpapers, they might not be animated but they do look cool when the phone idles.

Thus it's only with GAGIN, i think it should be the same for Bitpim users. (i supposed)

Posted by: Blitz Fist

You can use the FutureDial cable with the VM slider right? And just install the futuredial drivers and use bitpim right? because im gonna get a cable and i need to know.

Posted by: bova80

its only been stated over and over in this thread, you can use the futuredial cable and bitpim just install vx6000 drivers

Posted by: pgens

And make sure the cable you get has the inline black box.

Posted by: Popasmurf

Is it possible to do this on any SE44? I am using US Cellular, and plan on getting the 44. I already have the data cable.

Posted by: Russbo

Okay, I'm sure I must be missing something and I sure hope I am b/c I don't wanna know I wated $40 on my USB data cable for nothing. I don't have a slider phone but I do have the KX414 and I love it so far but I can't, for the life of me, get Bitpim to work using my phone and that cable. I've been all over the Internet looking for advice and help and no one can seem to or want to help me with this. I'm using Bitpim v. 0.7-test 9 and it sucks. I keep getting an error message stating, and I quote...

20:06:49.796 Error: Device needs attention -
Other CDMA Phone on COM2: The phone is not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew.

See the help for troubleshooting tips

No matter what COM port I use, I get this stupid error. I've adjusted (I think) my ports to 19200 and that hasn't helped. I've tried everything and I'm almost ready to give up. I'd almost gladly sell the cable and software for $25 just to know I got a little money back from my failed venture. Can anybody help me with this? I'm going crazy and I hate not knowing why this isn't working. I've had the cable since last Wednesday and it should have worked right out of the box with either BitPim OR Gagin and neither work and I hate Kyocera's sorry excuse for a piece of software. I want polyphonic ringtones on my phone, dang it! That's why I bought this particular phone in the first place! Thanks y'all! I am...

Eternally grateful,
Russell

Well, I am in the same situation too. I've got a se-47 a FD cable, and have tried every software that there is and it still does not work. I am about to go insane.....

you gotta get the drivers from furturedial's website

Posted by: rc-dude

I've got that....

Posted by: reddog_90

and it still doesnt work? i don't know what to tell you then.. after i finally got the right cable everything worked fine for me, along with bitpim

not to sound retarded or anything...but the kyocera brand usb cable will work with mac version of bitpim.....righttttt?

Posted by: Russbo

But here's my dilema... my cable is the one purchased directly from Kyocera. :/ I'm basically screwed, huh.

Russell

Posted by: jacko1211

i just ordered my usb cable from kyocera...will it work? I have heard different things from different people...will it work on mac or pc or both? aaaahhhh

Russell

Posted by: jacko1211

yay! the kyocera cable works flawlessly with the newest version of bitpim on mac os 10.3!

Thanks!

Ok, I found a post by TigerX87 who had the same problem as mine with the dnld directory. Tiger, did you ever get this to work? Also, under Settings, Sounds, the only options I have are Ringer Volume, Ringer Type, Slide Open, Slide Close, Buisness call ring, Personal call ring, and a few more. I do not have Ringtones listed... Thoughts on that?

Posted by: Glottis

put it in the ringer directory. then it will show up under the list of ringtones as you would select it normally or in the my sounds menu. also, if you get one of those weird errors just try it again, happens to me all the time

Posted by: EddyPieHands

Hi there. *Such* a useful thread, thanks!

Has anyone had any luck with the "slidesnd", "predef", or "default" folders? I'm assuming new files in these folders won't do anything...but has anyone tried *replacing* the existing files with new files with the same name?

It'd be really cool if you could change slide sounds and message alerts (etc.) that way...anyone gutsy enough to try?

Also, since someone asked about OS X compatibility, I'd just like to say that I *can't* get BitPim to work with my Slider in OS X. Luckily, it works extremely well (once you install the cable drivers) in Virtual PC running XP...

For those others of you out there with Macs, you have probably noticed that iTunes can't encode MP3s at low enough bitrates...in case you're searching for a way to do this, I suggest using iTunes LAME encoder, which you can find here. Personally, I like to putz with equalizers in iTunes, capture the iTunes playback with Audio Hijack, and then encode them, but that is a bit much, I'll admit... Anyone else like to edit their MP3s down to 20 seconds (the length of time mine rings before voicemail picks up)? It's kinda fun to "re-mix" things. Of course, this may just be me...

the latest 0.7.1.4 version of BitPim works absolutely perfectly for me running mac os 10.3! get the kyocera cable, install the drivers from the website, and in pitpim under the prefs, set phone type: other cdma phone; and for com port click browse and select /dev/cu.Kyocera

it will TOTALLY work!! I have been successful adding mp3 and midi tones, and wallpapers!

Posted by: EddyPieHands

Wow, you're right. I know I had that driver installed before, maybe I got rid of it in troubleshooting something...in any case, a reinstall of a the driver now has it working. Thanks!

Too bad it doesn't support drag-n-drop...also, you have to aim *above* an item to right-click it, otherwise it selects the item below...does that happen to you?

Posted by: jacko1211

haha, yeah that does happen...but i'm happy. At least I dont have to use windows

Amen to that!!

Thanks to this forum and all of you helpful folsk I got it working!

1st off i got the free WAP working, YEAHYER!

and i got the uploading of data working also.

I have a

-slider se47 from MetroPCS in CA
-a data cable bought here:

http://stores.ebay.com/BargainCell_...genameZl2QQtZkm
and am using Bitpim 0.7.15
with the drivers that were included with my cable.

I'm only uploading midi files to my cell because the audio quality sacrifice for mp3's isn't really worth it, and am using photoshop to edit my BMPs (it promps you for the WIndows/OS2 format, then prompts for the bit depth also afterwards when your saving as BMP)

thank yous!

Posted by: EddyPieHands

Interesting. I've found that I prefer MP3 ringtones...I downloaded some MIDIs from my favorite games, but most of them sound goofy on the phone (certain instruments too loud, etc.). I've yet to find a simple way to edit that kind of thing. Same thing goes for editing the length.

So, I've been taking audio files and editing them in Final Cut Pro (I know it's overkill, but it's what I know how to use)...I can cut sections of songs out, blend the cuts, shorten the audio to a perfect 22 seconds, and even fade it out at the end.

Then I encode the MP3s with iTunes LAME Encoder from AIFFs exported from Final Cut. The results are really pretty good! Incidentally, if anyone wants some edited Slider ringers from Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI (and a few others), let me know.

Oh, and for those of you with Virgin Mobile (like me), you *can* put more than 10 files in the "dnld" folder, and they will all show up in "Ringtones" and be usable. The only thing is that only the 10 most recent files will appear in "My Ringtones," but that really doesn't matter.

I'm also using Photoshop for the BMPs, I don't really know how many Mac programs can export those otherwise...

Does anyone know how to replace screen savers? And what format are the animated ones?

Is it limited to only 4 frames?

Wallpapers ONLY limited to BMP so far? Or is there possibility of GIF and JPEG as long as they meet the dpi and color depth requirements?

One last question.

I'm looking for a midi editor. Can anyone recommend a program for that? I can handle the search.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I have been able to find, no one knows how to make a screensaver for this thing, animated or otherwise. Then again, does anyone actually use the screensavers? They seem rather a waste of battery juice to me, especially since you can't really see them with the backlight off anyway...I was initially miffed that mine came with such crap screensavers, but then I realized how useless they are to me, and it doesn't bother me anymore...

Yes, backgrounds are limited to BMP only. This really shouldn't be a problem, since you can convert GIFs and JPEGs anyway...though of course it's one more step.

I too would be interested in a simple MIDI editor...QuickTime lets you cut and paste bits pretty easily, but it's pretty hit-and-miss. I did try importing some MIDIs into Sibelius to edit them that way, but it turned out to be much more of a nuisance than I had thought it would be...which is why I went with MP3s...

So, any suggestions on a MIDI editor (preferably for Mac)?

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!

i just bought the verizon slider and i already had the lg vx6000 cable with the vx6000 driver installed and im using the 0.7.15-offical version .. but its not working -- when i plug in my slider -- the other drivers available are COM1 - doesnt work - and BCM 56k modem and that doesn't work -- what do i do ? i want to upload a simple midi

Posted by: pgens

There are a couple kinds of VX6000 cables... does yours have a black box in between the ends somewhere? The one that works with the Slider needs this.

Posted by: Ajs24

Yes it does -- do you think i need to install the kyocera drivers also? i was going to but there is a virus on my computer and when i get to the page -- it shuts down on me

Posted by: pgens

Yeah, I think the Kyocera drivers are going to be necessary.

Posted by: Ajs24

Do you know any other way i can get them?

Posted by: pgens

You didn't say what "the page" was, but if it wasn't the Kyocera web site then I'd try to grab those. I use them with an OEM Kyocera cable though... not sure what would happen if you tried them with an original VX6000 cable.

Posted by: Ajs24

http://download.35mb.com/usacdma/ <- thats where i tried to d\l them from

Posted by: pgens

You can try this page:

http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/downloads/downloads.htm

Someone will have to give the part number for the SE47 though... I don't have it handy. Better yet, go to the accessories page and they should have the cable's part number there.

Posted by: deps

I just got my cable today and thanks to reading the info in these forums I was able to what I wanted to do with it so far...

I got my cable from E-Bay for about $15 after s/h
ebay
It came with a disc with the drivers on it.

I used bitpim 7.15 with my slider SE47-Verizon
I couldn't use the bitpim 6 with my Verizon only my Virgin Mobilr Slider
with bitpim 7.15

I had to change my Com Speed to 115.2 kbps by:
Settings/Accessories/Com Speed

for ringers
user/sound/ringer
midi and mp3 worked

for wallpaper
user/mypictures
format: PNG would work but I couldn't get BMP to work

I'm willing to use my virgin mobile slider to experment with changing the "slidesnd", "predef", or "default" sounds but I think I'm gonna need some help with what I should do.

I really want to change/add to the "slidesnd" because I want to have those sounds that the phones make on the Matrix (Sounds like a gun loading).

Posted by: Ajs24

Deps -- what kind of cable do you have?

Also pgens -- i installed it but its still not working

Can anybody that uses the VX6000 cable on the verizon slider to access Bitpim help me?

Posted by: deps

is what it says the top of the package it came in.

It also has a Hi-Speed certified USB label on it the one i got was in that link from my previous post but if you didn't see it here it is e-bay

Posted by: Ajs24

Mine is a VX6000 cable -- it just has a box in the middle that says USB data cable .. i really really want this to work on my slider

Posted by: tekstyle

how do u delete default ring tones? do i have to do that in order for the new ones to show up? i don't have a dnld folder under sound so i just created one. i get an error when i try to delete factory ring tones.

Posted by: littlechris1977

Cant delete defaults. I forgot where to look for the folder but I will tell you later.

Posted by: tekstyle

ok i got it hehe..

mp3/midi:

goes into sound/ringer

wallpapers:
goes into mypictures

a good program to use to edit your images is photoshop. they don't distort your shrink down images. its also good to brighten the image up and jack up the contrast to give it more vivid color because when you see it in your phone, it's going to look more dull and dark.

right now, trying to find a way to back up and load my contact list.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but (1) it's a darn good guide, and (2) there's an easy way to do this through windows (xp) that not everyone knows about, though this may have already been posted, but I didn't feel like sifting through 10 pages to find it So if this is redundant, my apologies.

If you open up any folder in Windows Explorer, click on the Tools menu, and then Folder Options, you will see a menu with three tabs. Click on the View tab, and on the scrollable list there looks for an option that says "Hide extensions for known file types." UNCHECK that box, click OK, and you should now be able to see the ".bmp" extension at the end of your bitmap file names. Simply delete that part and you're set.

Posted by: rc-dude

I've got another way to do it... I opened up doddle, and saved 10 pcitures, when in bitpim, just over wright those pictures with your new ones, and your pictures will work. You don't have to worry about the file extention showing up this way.

Posted by: Bugmenot2

I finally found a USB data cable from radio shack and it's working beautifully. I had to drive to every radioshack within about a 50 mile radius to find one...but found one. So, I downloaded some free ringers on the net, it's easier than creating your own. So, I get them into the folder and when I go and check my ringers, they're all there and they play fine BUT I've always had this problem with my phone:

I hacked my phone from VM to Verizon and since then it's difficult to get any ringers to work except the ring remix and I HATE THAT RINGER. I downloaded a bunch of nintendo ringers and set it to ring as that in the regular settings and in the business and personal ring....still get ring remix. Is there something missing that I should do or has anybody had this problem and found a solution. I would appreciate it a ton if anybody could get back to me on this matter. Thanks a bunch and nice write up!

Posted by: sweetdude642003

Just because your phone is on Verizon shouldn't make it act all funny, i had mine on there and it worked fine, and when i felt like it i just changed the SID and worked w/ Virgin (had mine on both providers at the same time) I never had the problem like your describing, it sounds like its not saving your prefs or something, if your on Verizon and you plan to stay with them you my as well just flash your phone to Verizons software, if you want to keep any prebuilt ringtones download them off the phone through bitpim. if you want to get a cheap cable http://www.buynshop.com has a cheap SE47 cable for like 16.95 i bought mine w/ 3 day shipping and it was only like 24.90 or something , it comes w/ drivers as well

Posted by: jez_dog

I have a NS1.0.163 version SE47 and the directory layout is different to what was posted in the how to above (still very helpful though).

Ringtones only appear on my phone if you place them in /user/sound/ringer

dunno why this is might be a different software version

I am with Telstra CDMA in Australia btw.

Posted by: Bugmenot2

I've had my phone on verizon for roughly a year now and to be really honest, the MTV features of this phone SUCK. I really didn't have much money to blow on a cable but my phone got stuck on "ring remix" for quite some time and well...that must be the worst ringtone on earth. I actually prefer the long continuous ring found near the bottom of the list but it would never work.

As far as flashing it...I have no idea how that's done.

As far as my previous problem. I went through and assigned a ringer to each contact and it works great, though tiring at first...good thing I don't keep that many numbers.

Finally....as the last post mentions that his ringers won't show up unless he puts them in the ringers directory. Try going into my ringtones or whatever it is on your phone then backing out and going into ringtones. Going into my ringtones refreshes the list!

Posted by: jez_dog

For those of you who are interested - you can buy a data cable for the SE47 really cheaply off ebay. I got a usb one and it came with drivers and it went for $0.02 - don't ask me how they make any money. It cost me $18 total for shipping etc. but as far as i'm concerned thats a good deal especially since they are AUS$140 over here...

Here is the error I get.

I haven't seen very many posts refering to the se44. I wonder if there is possibly a software difference between the 47 and 44 that may be preventing me from adding wallpapers. I have no problems adding midi ringtones.

What was your secret? I got the cable tonight and I'm trying to get it to work. I'm using the "prolific" drivers from futuredial.com and I'm trying gagin and bitpim.. gagin crashes and bitpim just won't connect. Just wondering how you went about setting yours up

Thanks,
Ron

Posted by: sweetdude642003

Make sure your trying to view the filesystem and not trying to just connect. If i'm not mistaken its View>Filesystem something like that, then click on the plus and see if it reads your phone

Posted by: stickboy3k

Yep, that's what I was trying but I got it figured out. It's kinda weird. I have to connect the phone, open gagin, let it crash, then open bitpim. Odd but it works lol!

Thanks

I have successfully downloaded a bitmap image to '/user/mypictures'; how do I assign that picture to a contact? do I have to put it in a different folder? which one?

I can only assign it as a wallpaper or screensaver now.

Posted by: sweetdude642003

I'm not sure if you can, if you do I'm sure it has to be a certain size maybe like 20x20 or something because those pictures are tiny. I'll take a look around on my phone later and see if i can have any luck

coldkarma,

Without being presumptuous, have you correctly installed the driver for your data cable? In my case, the driver set up COM4 on my XP box with 115.2 kps. My Slider's com port is also set for 115.2 kps. After booting BitPim, my settings are COM4, other CDMA phone, and Bitfling disabled. Then, I was good to go to use Filesystem to view my phone's information and peform file transfer, etc.

Jim

Posted by: coldkarma

first, thanks for replying!

second, you were right. i believe the problem was my driver. i'm trying to download one right now.

hopefully that will help me!

thanks again!

Posted by: sweetdude642003

One thing to keep in mind is when your doing Data Transfer its usually a good thing to cut off the RF, and not to touch the phone, cause as soon as something happens it cancels your transfer, which can be a pain if your restoring a directory

This may have already been awnsered, but I didn't have time to look through the 11 pages. I was just wondering where I could find a working driver for a usb cable for the SE47. Thanks

if its an original Kyocera Data cable you can find it at (these include the Modem Drivers as well, so i recommend downloading them anyway, if your wanting to use that feature) http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/sli...one/drivers.htm or mostly any other Data Cable you can find it here *this is a direct link to the ZIP file* http://www.futuredial.com/support/d...ificdrivers.zip

Will this cable work for my version of kyocera slider? Or did I order the wrong cable? Is this the one I need or are these cables the same?

not to thread jack, but can someone get me some really good pictures of the USB cable? I am really interested in the end that plugs into the phone and any other part other than the usb plug... some pinouts would be cool too if someone had some free time...

Installing the cable went as follows:
1. Plug into USB port.
2. Windows pops up with the new USB device wizard
3. Direct the wizard to use the drivers provided on the CD that came with the cable.

I have a cd that came with my cable, but my pc is noy recognizing it...anyone help?

Once the image is formatted correctly, save it as a Windows BMP file.

How exactly do we do this? Tried searching
Also when I plug in, the computer detects the phone, but will not connect with the program BitPim.

I have a SE47 from Bell mobility and tried all the things everyone has suggested but still I cannot get it to work. My cable works, it's a USB cable and the driver is installed properly. I can't seem to get into my phone with all the different programs. I was wondering if I need something different for my phone seeing it's canadian? I have downloaded bitpm .62 and gagin, gagin seems to be the only one that gets to my phone. I tried kyocerapst.zip but there seems to be something missing when I try to run it only loads to 99% and then an error message. Can anyone help? Thanks

Posted by: realgt

do you have winxp?
try opening gagin then when it lists your folders close it and immediately open bitpim. also make sure bitpim has the same com port in EDIT->SETTINGS

that is a winxp workaround, it might work for you

Hey, I followed your directions and all went smoothly, I have my mp3 ready to go as a ringer and it meets the above specs, but where do I put it?!? The "/user/sound/dnld" dir mentioned above doesnt exist on my phone! I can see the other midi ringers on the phone in the default dir and I also have a "predefined" dir which shows other midi sounds but no dnld dir. Also, in my settings on my SE47, it doesnt actually say "Ringtones" under sounds, it shows Ringer Type, and thats where it lets me choose my ring. I put the mp3 into the default dir and I cant see it, I create a subdir and cant see it. I also dont have a folder called my downloads! Using Bitpm and XPpro with the data cable, I also have to connect to my phone with Bitpm using the "other cmda phone" option. Plz help! Just wanna have my band as my ringer! Thx in advance guys, this board rules! -- Oren

Posted by: realgt

hey oren,

if you don't have the /user/sounds/dnld folder then put it into /user/sounds/ringers

that should work... good luck

-realgt

Posted by: Finespun

I can put it in 'ringer' but i have no 'ringers' ! What now?

Hope the screen shot gets through

Posted by: realgt

if you put it in /user/sounds/ringers, it should show up in your my sounds under "fun and games" and if you dont have a my sounds then go to settings>sounds>rintone type> (or similar) see if it shows up

you gotta search for it and see what you can find, but that should be the correct folder..try powering your phone off and on

good luck

Realgt, I'm running XP home and still can't get anywhere. I got the kyocerapst to work but still have not managed to accomplish anything. I'll try to start over and see. How do you save a bmp without the extension, I need step by step if you got it.

No dice, still cant find any file I put on there, going to link you to the screenshot so you can see what im looking at. Ill be happy if I can even see a midi file on there that I put on. Havent been able to do that either!

medic5, its really easy, you have to save it as a normal bmp file like bmp01.bmp then right click on it and rename it to only bmp01
windows will give you a warning but you must proceed to get your file with no extension

finespun---are you right clicking on the ringers folder and selecting "new file" then uploading your mp3? bitpim isnt the greatest at listing files under folders, do you see it on the phone?

Yep, right clicking, new file, it says busy, i watch the bar fill up till its done, but still no files on the phone. I was talking to someone else by email that said my phone has different firmware and thats why I dont have that dir, have any of you looked at the screenshot I took(its in the above post)? Can anyone confirm that my phones dir structure is different than what you guys normally see?

I'm still ahving problems saving pictures without extensions. I've tried but to no avail. Can someone help? I use windows xp home. Any programs that I should use?

I finally figured it out.

saving pictures without an extension is a TWO STEP PROCESS.

first you save the picture in whatever image editing program you have, lets say MSPAINT. you click file->save as.. and then choose a folder. PLEASE choose your desktop folder to save you some #$@# time. save it as bmp10.bmp, or something similar. then close out of your image editing program.

NOW, as in ALL FILES on your windows xp system, you can right click on a file to rename it. HOWEVER, if you still have the default setting to HIDE FILE EXTENSIONS with KNOWN TYPES then you wil not be able to see the .bmp part of your file to change it. SOOOOoooooo you go to my computer, when opened click on tools->FOLDER OPTIONS->VIEW tab and uncheck HIDE FILE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN TYPES. then you click apply and close and go back out to your desktop, right click on your file now named bmp10.bmp and click rename and it will highlight bmp10.bmp using your mouse, click at the end of the filename after the second "p" and press your backspace button 4 times to delete .bmp from your filename. now press enter. you will see a warning "Are you sure you want to change the file extension...blah blah blah. say YES"
thats it

I have everything working except....

When I upload a ringer, it doesnt play anything at all. I have done this before and it worked fine until I put on a ringer that was too big and I had to send the phone in for warranty work. They sent me a new phone incase you were wondering what happens when you screw up. I have tried to get these on my friends phones while i was waiting for mine to return. All of these I only get nothing. You click on play and its silent. You can hear it trying to play if you hold the speaker up to your ear. All I can hear is that the speaker is getting power but no signal. PLEASE HELP!

Posted by: realgt

risdog, assuming your speaker (rear speaker) works normal like in speakerphone mode, then you might have an issue with the encoding of your mp3....make sure that its 16000hz, 24-bit rate, and less than 100kbs (to be safe)

Posted by: risdog1973

Just to make sure I followed the encoding post step by step and still nothing. Any other ideas? Like I said i was able to do it on my old phone and i am unable to use the EXACT same files on this phone.

what sw version do you have on your slider?

I figured out the problem. For some reason audacity is not merging the 2 mono tracks. I did a reinstall of the software and all is well.

Thanks

i used to be able to do it in the past but now it won't let me. when i click on a ringer and select delete, I just get an error

Posted by: realgt

when crap like that happens i reboot with the phone connected while it loads, and open bitpim again and it works fine again....try also power cycling your phone see if it helps..

Ive got an SE44., it seems to have a differnt file structure than the SE47. I can add directories that don't show on the phone with bitpim. I can delete free kws ringtones using bitpim. I receive no error messages when I upload the ringtones, but they are nowhere to be found in the phone.. I can also upload the free kws files to the phone with bitpim and use them.

Any thoughts? I've given this about ten hours and have no idea what to try next.

Thanks in advance!

I see there are still some people out there with the same problems as I had, so I guess this is the best place for my first contribution.

I have an SE44, Susteen USB cable, and I am running windows.

Here is a step by step. (any software mentioned, you can find the links on the first page.)

Pictures...

NOTE: forget what you have been reading about deleting the extension. you NEED it.

Required Picture size - 128 x 116 (128 wide, 116 high)

I use MSPaint to adjust pictures. I have found that this works easiest for me, personally.

Step 1. After you have adjusted the picture you want to the size needed, save the file as PNG1.PNG.

Step 2. Open the file where the picture was saved. follow the steps listed below:

(on the top of the folder page) select tools... folder options... View... then uncheck "hide file extensions for known types"

Step 3. Locate picture (PNG1.PNG) Right click, select 'Rename'.

Step 4. Rename file as PNG1.png (make sure the extension is LOWER CASE)

now you are done with the file itself.

Step 5. Open Bitpim. Click the + tab on the system files page. Right click "brew" and select "create new subdirectory". Name the new sub directory "shared" (all LOWER CASE letters)

Step 6. Right click on the new 'shared' folder you have just created and select 'add new file'.

step 7. locate your new PNG1.png file and upload it.

Your new file will show up in the pictures folder in doodler.

NOTE: I have named my files PNG1 - PNG25 just for ease of use. I do not know if other names will work.

NOTE 2. When renaming your png file, make sure you name it 'png' NOT 'PNG'. This is very important. if it is named PNG, the picture can be used as a screen saver, but NOT as wallpaper.

NOTE 3. Make sure you name your new 'shared' file in ALL lower case letters. my phone would not find the pictures any other way.

MPG Ringtones.

For this, I will be refering to ACID 4.0, as I am familiar with this program. I am sure that someone can do a walk-through on how to accomplish the same things with a freeware program.

1. Open the MP3 you wish to use as a ringtone and edit it. I have all of mine set at 45 seconds, as the phone will not ring longer without the voice mail picking up.

2. select File, Render as (save as in other progs?) MP3. At this point, I have the option of setting all of the details by clicking the 'custom' tab. (this is where other programs will vary) Set your ring tone at 'Mono"... then set as 24Bit, 64KHZ. save it as an MP3.

3. Open Bitpim. Click on the + next to system files. Click + next to 'user'. Click + next to 'sound'. Click + next to 'ringer'.

4. Right click
