I was just wondering if I should get a cell here, and possibly try and unlock it for use in the U.S. . Is there any phone in perticular to get ?

Wirelessly posted (rip: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

tri-band GSM, if you can find it ...CDMA you may have probs with because the carriers are reluctant to re program a "foreign" phone onto their network

Korea is a non-GSM nation; everything is CDMA 800. Same sort of situation as Japan. No sense in bringing one back to the US, as it's unlikely any provider would be willing (or even able) to program the ESN number into it.

Korean phone outside of Korea = paperweight.
GSM phone inside Korea = paperweight.

Alas...

Actually, Japan uses GSM too but at frequecies of 1700 instead of 1900.

Is this fairly recent? I searched and searched, but I couldn't find any useful info on GSM in Japan. I take it that it's not widely used...
