I've been trying to download the unlocking software from the mio site (justmio.com) so I can add some other programs to my phone, but it won't let me and I've been trying for sometime.
Does anybody know of another place this software can be downloaded, or can anyone put it on the web or send it to me?
Ta!!
PS: the other links mentioned in mio posts seem to go to the justmio site also, which just returns an error.

the mio 8380 unlocking is an online service, therefore your phone has to be connected by activesync your pc for this. the unlocking software itself cannot be downloaded.

i was mistaken - there's actually a software available for download (NOT from Mitac), so that you need not go online to the Mitac site.
Download it here:
http://www.apah56.dsl.pipex.com/mio8380u.zip
please note that this file contains also the extended OEM ROM upgrade. the detailed instructions are in the zipped file. the first part explains the unlocking, and the second part explains the upgrading.
i successfully unlocked my mio, but was unable to upgrade the ROM. the phone screen says: "image file too large", so i'm back to my old ROM version. suggestions, anyone?

Thanks for the info.
Mio site just returns "not authorised" error, but I have downloaded the zip files you sited.
Cannot get the phone to perform the right actions when connecting the cable with Voice-down button pushed (as per instructions) - just doesn't seem to do anything so I can't run the update.
Any suggestions?

did you disable the USB support on the Active-Sync PC program?
what i did was to connect the USB cable first (of course after switching off), then simultaneously pressed the volume down and voice record buttons. this worked for me repeatedly.

I hate to keep on - but I'm really not having any luck. I definitely disabled the USB port, and have done everything suggested.
When you say "switch off" what did you mean? The mio, or activesync?
Reading all other sites on the web it seems that mitac have deliberately made this really difficult just recently - I can't even register as a VIP member in order to get the unlock on-line process.........

you have to turn off the phone first, then proceed with the volume down and voice record keypress routine. there is no reason why it won't work, unless your phone has other issues.
mitac's website support is really horrible. their english website goes offline almost constantly. however i just tried again earlier and it went through. at:

before you can proceed to unlock you may have to set your browser's privacy settings to the lowest (in IE, click on Tools->Internet Options->Privacy).
good luck!
