How can I make my 8900 not make noise on startup/shutdown?

I've read the entire manual and gone through every menu option, and I can't figure out how to keep my 8900 from making musical "bwing" noises on startup and shutdown.

I can find no sound option for startup and shutdown, and the Settings=>Graphics=>Startup/Shutdown items don't give me any choice but the default Verizon animation -- which appears to come with "bwing".

This is a deal-killer for me. Sometimes I realize my phone is on when it shouldn't be, but I can't turn it off without making lots of noise!

Anyone know how to fix this?

Simply hold the * key down until you are in "etiquette mode". Now the phone will not beep when pressing keys or ring, but it will still vibrate if you get a call.

You can however turn it off at this point w/out it making any noise.

Once turned back on, the etiquette mode is off and it will make noise, however, if you turn it on and close the flip, the tune is only one for a moment and the phone is silent. You can then re-activate the etiquette mode if needed.

Yeah, the startup sound is really annoying. I always hold it between my hands when I turn it on so it doesn't make as much noise.

If you close the flip after you turn it on, it should only make the sound for a very brief moment.

Wow.

I have to say that this is the most retarded misfeature I have had the displeasure to encounter in any piece of personal electronics.

"I know what will make our product appeal to the masses! Every time you turn the phone on, we'll have it play a jerky logo animation at about 1.3 Hz. While it's doing this, we'll play merry-go-round music at maximum volume, even if the phone is set to vibrate! Then, just to make it sound even more like a $350 piece of equipment, we'll cut the tune off abruptly just before it ends!

While you're in there, can we have it do the same thing on shutdown too? And my 3-year old son likes hot air balloons, so paste random pictures of them on the outer display while all this is happening.

WAIT! I have an even better idea! Let's not just make it the default...let's NOT LET USERS CHANGE IT! We won't even let them buy an alternative through Get It Now!"

Does Verizon have a room full of monkeys salvaged from amphetamine toxicity experiments to whom they entrust major branding and presentation issues? Do they really think they can sell this phone to PROFESSIONAL ADULTS?

Good lord.

I saw a guy walk into a corporate store a few weeks ago all ready to buy a 2000-minute America's Choice plan. He said "Show me your best phone". The rep pulls out an LG VX6000. He looks at it for about 20 seconds and walks out. Why? The LG looks like a toy. There's a reason Motorola keeps selling the v60: it looks and acts like a TELEPHONE.

I may have to suffer with AT&T TDMA for a while longer if this is the best that Verizon can do. My 6360 might be ancient, but I can see who's calling instead of a big "VERIZON WIRELESS" banner, the display font is readable, and it doesn't make merry-go-round noises when I turn it on or off.

The Vox looks like a serious phone; I am chagrined to find out that it is not.

I have more than a few gripes with the phone and the deal killer with me is the poor camera quality. I might be canceling this contract before the 14 days is up and going back to AT&T....but their coverage is so poor with GSM that I'd have to go back to the TDMA phone as well...my v60.

You would think that the manufactures would get a clue and check out some of these forums and actually build a phone with the features that the consumer wants...hell, I'd be more than willing to shell out an extra $200-300 for the proper phone.

Good camera
Great sound / reception
Bluetooth
Flip
Tri-mode
User friendly menus and a subsytem that makes sense. (still can't believe that you can't use the directory when training the voice dials...good grief!)

The more I think about it...the more pissed I get at them.

Very well said. It boggles my mind that this not yet adjustable as well. Perhaps in a future update...

Lets also add the blinking banner feature to that list of brilliant ideas.

I think Verizon's greed is behind all of this...

Well, by diddling around with the file in the db directory, I was able to change the shut-down animation. But I wasn't able to change the annoying song it plays. I am wondering if the song is embeded in the Verizon software/firmware.

Waruwaru: You and Zaediex rule.

What happens if you replace (for instance) default_ani_off.txt with a copy of default_ani_idle.txt? Or a 0 length file? (Seems smarter to mess with the off animation so the phone will still turn on if it's screwed up.)

It would be so cool if the animation was gone, because all it does is make it take longer to power up/down the phone. Then maybe the phone would be powered down before it could play the music!

Please let me know what happens if you try this!

Heh, thanks. What I did was to append default_ani_idle.txt to the end of default_ani_off.txt, and that gave me a choice to select between the Flower or the regular Verizon shutdown animation. But the sound still plays... I hex edited some of the stuff in the file itself. When I screwed up and try to select the new anim record in the menu as shut down animation, the phone would start "ringing" and wouldn't shut up. When I shut down, I got white screen with a big box and a cross in the middle, but the darn music still plays. I havn't tried the 0 length file yet (don't want to freeze my phone ). Base on the above observation, I am thinking the sound isn't kept in the file itself.

Side note, editing Shutter_sound.txt doesn't seem to do much, only made the shutter sound crappier. There might be another area where the settings are stored. Or might be hardcoded so we can't disable it.

I am curious as to where the default sound/animation/pix themselves are stored... Wonder if it's binary resource in the firmware, or it's something hiding in the file structures?
