Couple questions regarding 8100pp. *ringtone and activation

I just bought a used audiovox 8100pp planning to use it sparingly on the pay and talk plan. I was wondering if I need to buy the activation kit in order to get on the plan or can I simply buy like a $25 prepaid card and get them to switch the current # to a new one?
Also is it possible to get new ringtones in addition to the ones that comes w/ the phone originally?
