Audiovox cdm8900 Modem

I am running windows Xp professional and I am unable to use the data cable as a usb modem. I did the same thing with my vx4400 but when I select the port on the modem setting It dosent dial the phone..Is there a settign on the phone and computer that I need to set up. I would like to use my dial up isp through my laptop...if anyone can help me that would be great...
