SE47 AMPS Compatability

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Something I seen while browsing my slider with bitpim. There was a config file for AMPS. I was surprised to see this. I didn't even think that the slider was analog compatable? If it is not analog compatable, why would it have a cofiguration for analog?

One would think that they would just not have anything for AMPS in the phone if it were not a feature.

VM slider oddities...

phonescoop claims it doesn't have it but virgin could have disabled it like they did 1x or analog on the vox. I don't understand why they would disable 1x on the slider though, they didn't do it to the vox (unless its not disabled, just the icon is disabled)

Posted by: xanthus

The VM sliders probably have 1X disabled because either VM dosen't want to provide that service, or they don't have that service available in accordance to Sprints' contract w/ them.

Thats understandable.

I didn't even know that the sider was AMPS capable. I thought it was a digi only handset. I havne't really read anywhere that it supports AMPS at all. O.o

Now, the new question is, do the Bell Sliders have full useage of this? Their firmware is a bit different than VM's. So I think it would be interesting to find out "for sure" that the sliders can do analog.

Know what I mean?

okay, i went digging through the fcc report on the phone and it is registered as a dual band cdma, no amps. But what I did find was the answer to another hot question, why in the world can't we use the phone with the slide closed. According to a letter from the FCC to kyocera, it was requested by the fcc for the phone not to work while closed, and on top of that, they made it so that the mic and speaker get cut off when the phone is closed, but why? who knows (well the fcc does). Anyway, I guess the bell version is ampsless as well, so whats the menu for then? arghh, to many questions

Posted by: xanthus

Yeah, no kidding! So many questions.

Thank you for the information. Thats really good work!

THe phone is amps capable. honestly the only reason any phone is digital or dual mode or tri mode for that reason is programing. find the correct program and you can crack it. Don't know how to do it. so be a pioneer.

~Berg

also usuall when they send test phones to market their unlocked and don't neccisarily have the finalized versions of software in them. most unlocks are all band. amps and digital.

Posted by: xanthus

Mr_Breg, Thats what I thought in the first place. It's makes me wonder if other Sliders (from other carriers) have DIGI/Analog turned on.

Posted by: Mr_Berg

turned on no.. but capable i'm pretty sure.

~Berg

Posted by: xanthus

Well, I mean they are setup for both and it's just a setting to switch on or off. Unlike the VM slider which dosen't have the option at all.

Posted by: Mr_Berg

vm because its major partner in the states is sprint and because sprint doesn't own any/many AMPS towers theres no reason to even build software that might allow it to be turned on. Secondary would be the ability for VM software to monitor mins/and what not. that can take up valuable programing space.

I'm in the minority I guess that doesn't want the phone working in closed mode. When I was replacing my housing I didn't move a couple of metal contacts over which caused the Slider to not detect if it was open or closed. During testing if I placed a call and closed the slide it wouldn't hang up (oops!). I fixed it but if you want you can take apart the Slider just enough to pry out those two metal contacts and you can make calls, etc with it closed. Just make sure to manually hang up the call And the little Slide-Open, Slide-Closed sounds won't work either.

Maybe IF it is AMPS capable the battery life might be horrible and would be a usless feature.

just by being amps capable doesn't kill battery life. Its actually being in amps mode

Posted by: inothome

Well thats what I meant, if it were to go into AMPS mode it would kill the battery to fast.

This would be a viable option if there was a software key lock, like the ones found in candbar phones (I'm assuming that the slider does not have one b/c the keys are locked when it is closed). i wouldn't want to accidently make phone calls when the phone is in my pocket.

The SE47 slider is not amps capable. On the other hand the new SE44 slider is amps capable.....and it works well

Posted by: viper1619

What's the SE44? I looked it up and Kyocera only put out a press release like... 8 days ago. Any info? =)

It is the tri-mode slider, ie cdma 800/1900 and amps. Otherwise the same as the se47. In fact my case says se47 on it but the sticker in the bat. compartment from kyocera says se44. I'm not sure if the se47 comes with 2 nams standard, it can be done through the pst s/w though. The se44 has 2 nams out of the chute, at least mine did, but I think that is carrier specific.

Help, with a burning question, please...
I've got conflicting reports from Verizon insiders about the Slider. Both swearing AMPS/ not AMPS capable
Is the Verizon Kyocera slider the se44? Is the Verizon version AMPS capable?

-
Thanks,
Sid

Posted by: yrless11

I haven't seen a vzw slider yet....I would bet that they are not the se44 which is amps capable. As far as I know the se44 is not for sale in the us, but it should be soon. Post that question in one of th vzw slider posts and see what someone who actually has the vzw slider says. My initial thought is that it is probably not amps capable but I could be wrong.

Edit: Sliders outside the us are most certainly the se44 amps version. So your conflicting reports might be coming from people outside us vs inside us.
