1. Haven't heard of 8500. DIC-8300 is USB. That's what I have, and it works great. DIC-1100 is serial. From what others say, it seems to work also.

2. Don't worry about pictures. You can't do them with Verizon. You can upload pictures, but you can't get the phone to let you choose them because it wipes out the files that defines what pictures you've uploaded every time you power on the phone.

3. If you want to manage your phonebook from your PC, you have to get the SmithMicro software that comes with the MOK8600 (mobile office kit). If you're just wanting to copy MIDI files, etc. to the phone, you'll need GAGIN or BitPim.

4. You'll just have to read through the forums here. Also, take a look at one new and one existing 8600 FAQ that are refered to in a few threads here.

5. If you adjust your settings according to the instructions found in any of the many "free WAP" threads in here, you can have limited mobile web for the price of airtime.

Good luck, and enjoy!

To be honest, I don't even know what Verizon offers in the way of pics and ringtones because I've never bothered to look into it. Sorry. Maybe some day one of these guys that has figured out all the ringtone stuff will crack the pics problem, too.

You certainly can put pictures on a CDM 8600 using Verizon for a provider without paying Verizon anything. Do a search on HEXXBOYS posts. All the information is there. I know. I did it last night.

You're right. I've had pics on mine for a couple of weeks now. But this was only figured out recently and was not known at the time I posted my last comment.

First you need a data cable, drivers, and either BitPim or Gagin software. If you're not sure how or where to get your hands on any of those things, do a search in this forum, they have been discussed extensively. Most people are using either the DIC-8300B USB cable or the DIC-1100 serial cable.

If you already have all the above and just don't know what to do from there, this has been covered in this forum as well. Let us know what you've already tried and what specific step you have a question about. It's easier to help that way.

Good luck!

But do you still have then after you power down? Mine looses the images but not the ringtones. GO FIGGER.

Yep. They've been there for a couple of weeks of powering down every night.

Are you putting the pics in the /brew/shared/images folder? Are you putting a store.idx file in the /brew folder?

Posted by: petec

Doh, I wasn't. After I posted the above message I was reviewing a few other topics and I saw the information about /brew/shared/images . I was just putting it in the other images folder. I added it to /brew/shared/images but didn't do anything to store.idx . Powered down twice since and never lost the image.

Thanks.

What is the store.idx file... and how do you use it...

I have uploaded pictures into my phone, but am a little bummed that i can't find much use for them other than background and screensaver. does anyone know of a way to increase the usefulness of associating a picture with a phone number?

thanks!
