5165 Modding

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ive got my 5165 and want some blue leds in it but dont want to solder. I could buy a 5165 mainboard with the leds pre-instaled but do any of you think its worth $25 or so? Ive already put alot into this phone, im just afraid they are going to be completly out of style soon. Should I just start saving my money for a new one?

In the meantime, does anyone know anything about flashing 5165s and how/if I can get all them new nifty features on it?

By the way I LOVE the site, I've been browsing around for quite a while and im not gonna be one of those register-ask a qestion-leave types.

I dont think you should waste your money on your 5165. With that $25 you spend on that mainbored, you could at least upgrade your phone to a 3590

P.S. Welcome to the Forums

Sweet, good idea!

Im gettin a used 8260 for $48! :-D

Thanks for the advise.

Posted by: compuwiz1937

My aunt had an 8260, and that was the best phone she ever had! With the way she treats phones, I can't believe it lasted as long as it did! Those are good phones to mod too! Oh, you might wanna check out www.nokialight.com

Posted by: Dan tha Man

WOW! Thanks alot i had never seen that site! I'll definantly but some stuff from there. Tell me, do those antena boosers work? Also whats the diff between a 8290 and 8260?

Posted by: 8265boi

The 8290 is GSM(which you should upgrade to BTW lol) and the 8260 is TDMA

Posted by: Dan tha Man

Does this GSM work with pre-paid? Thats my thing ya know.

Posted by: compuwiz1937

What state do you live in? Apart from the 8290 being GSM, its a little smaller, has an IR port, and can be used as a wireless modem for your laptop. The downside is that it only supports 1900mhz GSM, so there are few states it could be used in. But as far as I know, a GSM phone SHOULD work on pre-paid, but you'll wanna check with Cingular on that one.

Posted by: Dan tha Man

I live in Southern Indiana. Anyone?
Maybe I'll check in with my friends at Cingular tomarow.
$50 for an 8290 a good deal?

Posted by: compuwiz1937

I don't know what GSM is available there. Check with Cingular, if it isn't 1900mhz the 8290 one work becasue its a single band phone. And $50 is a little high. Check these links out:

This guys wants $40 BIN

Here is a search for all the 8290 Cingular phones on eBay:

Most of Indiana is GSM 850mhz, so I wouldnt reccomend getting an 8290 because its only 1900mhz. You could get a Nokia 3590 off ebay For under $30. It has both 850 and 1900 mhz and it also has polyphonic ringtones

The 3590 is not under $30, its about $50. I was looking at getting that phone for taking to places where I don't want to take my expensive phones, and ended up getting the SE t226, because I found a nice seller who was willing to end the auctino early and sell it to me. But, yes since there are mostly 850mhz licences there, don't get the 8290. The 3590 is a good phone for how much it will cost.

That first link is $40 with $12 shipping

And I forgot, the one I plan on buying has the sliding cover as a bonus.

Just checked: my little city of Evansville is covered! :-D

I would appreciate it if you didnt tell me what is what. You may have not seen one under $30 But last week on an auction I was watching the ending price was $11 and some change. And there were multiple auctions I saw that ended around $15-25

That $50 will have shipping added too, unless you included that in there. But most of Indiana has 850mhz licences so you probably will get terrible coverage, and I heard somewhere that Cingular no longer activates single band 1900mhz phones any more, that may or may not be true.

Did it actually say 1900mhz? If not, I would suggest not getting the 8290, but it still couldn't hurt to ask Cingular and see what they say. Do you travel alot?

Posted by: 8265boi

Well with that link you provided me,Thanks for proving my point!
The one thats ending the soonest is only $10.49 :laughs:

Yeah im gonna have to agree with him. If you take a look at an Indiana coverage map, From the looks of it like 90% of the state is 850mhz. So you should get a phone w/850mhz just to be on the safe side

Posted by: Dan tha Man

Man, this is confusing, i'm seein alot of different maps

That is an ATT phone, and its ONLY the phone. I meant the whole package, box, and everything.

Posted by: Dan tha Man

Does this mean anything?

Good form!

Posted by: 8265boi

OK....now find Indiana on the map. If its red,Its GSM 1900 if its dark orange its GSM 850. Since this map isnt detailed for you location, just try to imagine which area you seem to be in

Posted by: Dan tha Man

Gosh its really hard to tell where I am
I guess my only option is to ask them about it, and maybe face the truth.
I don't know why I really really wanted that phone!

Posted by: compuwiz1937

What is the date for that map? From what I can tell, I should have 1900mhz support! I want one of those Samsung E715, but it doesn't have 850mhz. Can you find a detailed map showing what is 1900 & what is 850 and what is both for the state of GA?

Posted by: 8265boi

That map is from this month

Where did that come from? I want to see if I can find one for GA.

Posted by: Dan tha Man

Shoot guys
Where I am only has TDMA...
I just get a 3590?

Posted by: 8265boi

Oh yeah....Cingular only offers TDMA for the prepaid users.
You cant get the 3590 because its GSM. But if you really wanna upgrade you should get the 3560 it will cost you $50-60 on ebay but hey..You get a color screen woo whoo!

Posted by: compuwiz1937

Oh yeah, that 3560 is a pretty nice phone, my aunt had one and my cousin has one. They are nice phones! And like 8265boi you can use it because its TDMA! Or you can get off prepaid and upgrade to gsm

Posted by: compuwiz1937

ohh... you can get that 8260, that is a TDMA phone too.

Posted by: Dan tha Man

I think Im just getting a 6340i. Hows that one?

Posted by: compuwiz1937

I don't think that will work either because its TDMA and GSM. But I didn't really like mine.

Posted by: 8265boi

Or you could also get a 8265,that is a good phone. I had that phone when i registerd here, hence the name 8265boi!

Yeah it'll work cause a friend of mine has Cingular and that exact same phone. Well its bought and on its way. $48 with two batteries, a sim card, and a charger.

Posted by: compuwiz1937

And he had pre-paid?

Posted by: Dan tha Man

Yes indeed.

Posted by: compuwiz1937

Then I guess go for it! You have 15 days if you don't like it, so I suppose it couldn't hurt to try.

Posted by: 8265boi

So he doesnt have it in his positon?

Well I agree with Compuwiz. Im almost sure that it wont work on prepaid because with a GAIT phone they have to activate the SIM card which I dont think they will do since they dont even offer GSM prepaid for you.

And as for your friend he may be screwed if im right. Just because it came with a SIM card doesnt mean anything if its a used SIM card. If a SIM card has already been activated it can NOT be activated again

Posted by: Dan tha Man

No he has the phone and has for about a year now. I meant mine is on the way. As for the SIM card I have no idea what they do. :-D
