this is a little OT:

Assuming you are purchasing a new phone every .5 yrs to 1.5 yrs, what becomes of the earlier phones you used to have? Toss it out?

Bellsouth Wireless (about 1.5 yrs ago) in florida were purchasing back the nokia 5100/6100 for 30usd in exchange when you buy a new 8200 phone.

Are there current buyback systems out? especially outside the states?

I don't know of any buyback programs at least no in Minnesota. I however just found out about a program that churches in our area is running whereby they take donations of old phones to be used by battered women to call 911 as any phone that has power can call the emergency even if there is no service plan with it and as long as coverage exists in the are for the particular phone, etc. I have about 6 old phones that are just lying around so this sounds like a good place for them.

I would never sell my phones back..I have such emotional bonds with them

Lets see
8290 - first phone I ever bought -- gave to my mom
T28w -- second phone I ever got -- gave it to a good friend of mine where it is appreciated
other phones I would use as back ups or give them to people whom I know that have need

very interesting! cellular wellfare... as each of us pays the .70 old cents for 911 service charge. while the needy ones rely on us who do pay, for the system to work!

nonetheless, the church drive is a commendable service to the community!

We don't pay (as in charge per call/minute or whatever) for 911 do we? I know we pay a flat monthly surcharge on our phone bill but that was the idea right? Even if you or I use 911, we still don't pay because the taxpayers pay for it right? (I know it's still us but bear with me!) In fact, when you get lost (or have an emergency) thousands of miles away from your home in a different state, and dial 911, it's really free to you because the taxpayers of that state are the ones paying for it, right?

I think these church programs are very good and need the support of all good citizens like you (and me)

Switched my Samsung N105 for the Motorola v66.

Nokia 8290 on Omnivoicemobile, or whatever it's called now. Stupid Jamie Lee Curtis and her stupid sexy legs. Cool phone. The reception quality is questionable, but it's hard to tell if it's the phone or the network, because where I live, the T-Mobile network is ***. It blows. I went with Voicestream because I liked the price, and more importantly, I liked the appeal of GSM, I thought the time would come sooner that all of us in the states would be on it. They also told me they were going to merge with various other networks and would soon be the most comprehensive network in the country. This might happen still -- the potential is most certainly there -- but in the meantime, the network leaves much to be desired. I'm shopping for Verizon phones.

had it for 3- going on for 4yrs. my primary phone, used for a modem for pc @ home & laptop for long trips. this jokr has been a loyal companion, good rf, good audio, battery life ok, it's indestructible. i don't use a watch anymore 'cause this is now my tyme piece. the minibrowsr is great for text data. the black casing shows minimum marks despite the numerous drops on the pavement over the yrs. life tymr: 6541 calls, 72601:57min/sec. so impressed with it that i aquired 2 more, 1 refurbished, 1 brand new, both flashed with new fw(hg1.0.20) & lastest prl(10015). looks like i won't be needing the backups 'cause this one's still walking the walk. manufacturers don't make 'em reliable like this anymore .

I am getting a T193 but I still love my N105

Various Verizon (they suck) and ATT (also suck) phones when I was with them and before that Airtouch (bought by Verizon) and McCaw Communications (bought by ATT)
