i know of sites where i can pay for it but i want to kno how to do it myself can anyone give me a site where i can d/l the program to unlock it?

Plus can i use the data cable to unlock it or do i need a special cable to unlock it?

I would recommend a Serial Cable over the USB one, and for the software do a SEARCH you will find all the info that you need

lol yeah you should really look first or you can pay me for my time and i can send it to you . Yes you need a data cable. I use usb and everythings been fine. So the choice is yours. Just to let you know it takes about an hour and 3 differnt programs and 2 flash files for the best results cheers

I bought this unlock Kit from this guy for 40 bucks off the net, I could sell it to you for 25, and it would probably get to ya by Friday I'm in San Antonio, TX let me know

It is not necessary to downgrade firmware version. There are unlockers in our country who make it remotely via logs and it is secure without risk to damage phone. Anyway it's your choice, but I would pay few dollars to have it easily unlocked.
