20 days ago i was dying to buy Sanyo's SCP-5000. 10 days ago i was in love with it. Now i want to break up with it...and my final decison is -> RETURN IT.

Personaly, i have to say this phone has great look (coz it's japanese style). I do love twin LCD! I don't know why, i think montreal has better coverage than BC, right? After 20 days of using this phone in school, working place, etc...i cannot imaging those people who bought this phone is BC.....and seriouly i drop LOT's call inside of shopping center, building and arcade. The phone spend too much time to search signal(in both network mode options->clearnet and automatic).....there are some critical drawbacks... (personal opnion)

1. LCD color is not bright.
2. Ringer volume is very weak, you cannot hear anything while walking in the public.
3. Signal problem.

Well, the rest of the features are good (including battery life).

After i return this phone, i don't know which one is best for me......nokia's 8290? 8260? almost all my friends are using these phones, they said it's good coz you can mod it...but 8260 is hard to mod, right? I mean it's hard to mod by yourself...

How's S40 (siemens)?? T39?? V60G/V60T/V60C? when will they available in Canada?

Now the problem is that i still have 6 months to go with Rogers. I have panasonic promax in use but i really want to change a phone. Therefore i bought sanyo's scp-5000. i do know if i cancel the contract after 6 months i will have to pay 120$ to Rogers. The moment i bought scp-5000 i thought it was worthy to do that but now....

I think i really need to hear some opinions from people....so please help!!~~~

I'm sorry to hear that you have jumped the Sanyo 5000 cellular bandwagon. I guess you're just one of many more dissatisfied customers after purchasing the flamboyant, with little substance, 5000.

The drawbacks you've indicated are very familiar with "other" Sanyo models, most notably, the strangly low ringer volume. This seems to be a problem for ALL Sanyo models so the 5000 looks like it wasn't much of an improvement in terms of that issue with the 5000.

I was lucky enough to goto a local dealer and check out the 5000 for myself, and yuck, the LCD display is HORRID in lighted areas. The display is very faint, vaguely similar to a holographic mirror of sorts. I don't know if the 5000 is any better in the dark, but my bet is that it SHOULD be. Not much of a breakthrough here.

As for "moddding" the 8260, it shouldn't be any harder to modify than any other Nokia handset. You should well know that pretty much any current Nokia can be modded easily. If you don't want to get stuck with the d/c fee with Rogers, just go ahead and get yourself the 8260. I've used this handset, and works very solidly. Of course, if Rogers in you area of travel doesn't fair out too well, you should look towards the 8290. Both are very good handsets.

Thankx!! It's very nice to hear from you!!

About the nokia phone, i think the dealer told me at the moment i bought my panasonic promax that i cannot cancel the contract within the first 6 months (and cannot change plan, too). If i do, i will have to pay the original price for that phone. (At Aug. 26 2001 will be the end of first 6 months).

Can i buy nokia's 8260 from them?
If yes, my phone number will be the same?
How much they gonna charge me for the phone?

Or, will you suggest me to stick with panasonic and wait until motorola's V60g/c/t comes out? I think i lost lots of brain cell for this question.....

Do you modified your 8260? If i buy a 8260/8290, i will buy a LOTS of covers (especially with back/battery cover..) one of my friend has 58 covers...

thankx again, Bonka!!

I won't comment on swapping phones onto your Rogers plan as I am not familar with their methods. However, your phone # shoud remain the same.

I haven't really read much about teh v60 so I will also not comment on that, but I can surely be safe to think that it will be MUCH better than the 5000.

The 8260 can be modded any way shape or form. As long as you can find the accessories for it, there should be no problem as to modding the 8260, likewise, like many other Nokia handsets.

I would suggest you to choose the service provider that provides the best service for your usage instead of basing your decision on a particular phone. I have a Nokia 8890 and I see it as a useless toy because Fido's network is poor for my usage. I learned that I should never subscribe to a particular provider's service simply because they have nice phones. If I have to get a phone from Telus today, I would rather get a Nokia 6185, Audiovox 8100 or another StarTAC instead of the Sanyo SCP 5000 because of the dual mode issue (only CDMA 1900 Mhz). I just need a phone that has dual mode in CDMA 800 Mhz.

In general, Telus's coverage in BC should be better than those of the east because BC Tel Mobility (now Telus) have an extensive CDMA 800 Mhz network here. You are right that our CDMA 1900 Mhz coverage may be smaller than those in the east.

Thankx!!

To Bonka
Thankx!!
I think if the price (including modification) is ~250$, i will take it from rogers....but if they charge me full price (450$), then forget it...

i will ask my rogers dealer about it...i will post result later.

To Bimmer
Thankx!!
I think i am wrong....It's not the right way to buy a phone. But, the thing is i don't like to stick with a phone for more than 6~8 months....why, coz i really love those devices such as MD, cellular phone, ... if the coverage and signal quality are my first priority, i will use bell's service...i used it last year and i won't forget its signal quality....(my opinion) but they are tooooooo slow of getting new headset....

Thnakx again Bonka and Bimmer!!~~
