8910 The Real Thing...!

Okay, here's the deal guys:

I found an actual titanium shell for the 8910. See link here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...item=3076367373

I bought it.

Now I need to decide what to put inside;
I've seen the 8390 and the 8260, which phone should I modify to be enclosed in this lovely titanium shell?

Thanks,

Lou

If it fits/will work, the 8390 is a better phone.

Posted by: lpignate

good point; I'm definately hoping the better phone fits.

Between the two, the choice features based is a no brainer; it is solely a matter of finding what fits.

Thanks

How's this working out for you?

Posted by: lpignate

The seller in just recieved payment today.
I sent the money order Thursday; I believe the complication hinged upon the distance; the location is Australia.

I should have an update within a week or so, I surely hope the cost of $30 USD to get a small phone here means it'll get here fast. (though it prolly doesn't.)

Yeah, a 6590(i) can be changed to look like a 8910i, it can also look like a 8390.

Posted by: Malaco0219

theres no point then, if u dun even have active slide

Posted by: compuwiz1937

even if it was OEM it wouldn't matter, the slide still wouldn't be active.

Posted by: Malaco0219

i had it b4 buddy
trust me
its not worth ur time

Posted by: compuwiz1937

Who said I was buying it? I don't have a 6590(i) or a 8390.

Let me apologize, first for my lack of reply.
I've been so busy with furthering my education, I haven't had a chance to inform you of the severe technical issues that have arisen from this attempted modification.

Having acquired the titanium shell from ebay, I then acquired an 8390. I then took the 8390 apart, and it failed to fit in the 8910 housing. Why? well, for starts, the numberpad to the 8390 is not detachable, it's part of the screen. The screen itself, is slightly too large to fit in the case comfortably, it's just too snug. So let's recap: keypad, screen...

The kicker of course, is the microphone. If you look online, you need a mic with a ribon cable long enough to attach to the slide. You can get the cable, but the ability to install it transcends my skill level.

Basically, it's not worth your time, to quote someone else.

I'm not sure if any other phones fit, if you have any knowledge of this, feel free to post it. I'm sure as hell not financially able to purchase additional phones at this time to attempt to fit them, though I, of course, do have the OEM titanium housing. WheeHa. It's really pretty sitting on my desk, totally useless.

And now, of course the 8910i is discontinued, which is just, wow. Let's hope some Nokia Engineer is reading this and thinking: Hey, if we make a cool looking phone that works in the Americas, and it has edge and bluetooth, maybe we'll sell units ... lots of units... hmmmm

Again though, if anyone has any thoughts on this aside from eff it, i'd be happy to try things that don't cost me insane amounts of money (I am a student, after all).

Hello.

I'm new to the forum and been following this tread.
I currently have the 8890 and love the phone.
I also have the 8910 phone as well. We all know its useless here in the states.

After tinkering with the 8910, I found that there are major physical differences with the internal layout of both phones.

(1) The battery connections are at the top half of 8890's PC board, whereas the 8910 have them at the bottom of the PC board.

(2) The SIM card slot do not line up.

(3) The 8890 PC board is longer than the 8910's.

(4) The 8890 IF port is located on the lower left corner of PC board. It's on the upper right of the 8910.

Minor differences
(1) Screw hole placements

It would be interesting to see if any one has actually succeeded.

I even rigged the 8910 with the 8890's antenna to see if it would receive a signal. No such luck. I was pretty desperate.

I'll keep trying.

Posted by: Malaco0219

nice thx for the info!

Posted by: Necrosis

I've seen the 8390 placed in an 8910 dummy shell before, but from what I remember, the phone needed massive (and I mean HUGE) modifications to fit. The guy who did it basically butchered the phone to make it fit, and it looked pretty good afterwards. Basically, I don't think its worth risking the 8890 parts to try to fit it in the housing. As much as I'd really like an 8910 that works here (along with alot of other people), it probably won't happen ... lets hope nokia makes a nice triband 88XX/89XX series replacement

Posted by: Malaco0219

yes.. i think so.. if they have ppl on hofo.. which i am sure they do... they will realize how big of a mistake it was they didnt make 8910 triband
