S55 dialup problem

One of my colleagues is trying to connect to our servers on his iPaq/S55 using bluetooth. I already documented step by step instructions for setting up the connection on the iPaq and it works perfectly with my iPaq/6310i, however when he tries it, the phone dials and displays the telephone number then the ipaq says "no modem at the above number". If he dials the same number directly from the S55, he can hear the sqwaks and blips of the modem at the other end.

I can confirm the following:

1-The instructions I wrote work fine with a Nokia 6310i
2-The correct phone number has been entered on the ipaq
3-The phone looks like it is dialling the number.

Unfortunately we can't use GPRS (as I think this would be easier) and have to dial-in to the server on a regular (9600) data call.

I read somewhere that the S55 requires AT commands to be entered on the iPaq to get it to work but that was for GPRS. Do I still need to enter a string of AT commands for GSM data calls? If so, does anyone know what they are? I've tried searching for S55 AT commands in google but as usual the results are bogged down with "buy an S55" type links and there doesn't seem to be anything specifically for GSM data.

TIA.

Z
