8300 Voice Mail Help

I have had the 8300 for about a year now. I am pleased enough with it. I was paying a fee to my service provider for voice mail, not knowing that the 8300 comes with a built in call answer feature. So I have just got rid of the mail service from the provider, and followed the book to set up the built in free call answer service, but it doesn't work. I know its' on, as the new icon appears on the main screen, and I also made my greeting. But I have called my cell from another phone several time both with it on, and off, but all I hear after about 15 rings is "The cellular phone customer, is not answering". Can someone please help?
