no

according to kyocera, you can use it as a modem, check their website for the instructions. As far as the free part, I doubt it but since I havent seen anyone post here that they have use it as a wireless modem so the free part is still in question.

Cool. If virgin doesnt charge for wap then i doubt anything will happen if i use it as a modem

not to put this like an a** but why wouldnt it work...it says that u can do it on the site and it has all of the right options as far as i know

actually as far as I can tell you will be using your minutes. Im still looking into it, but I assume you just dial out an isp to connect, well you have to dial the isp number like a regular call and there is no way around that. Wap and using it as a modem are two totally different things. Unless a wap site could act like some sort of bandwidth proxy but the screen would have to display it so......no.

modem = maybe

free = no

USB Data Kit
TXDTA10063

The USB Data Kit helps you manage your contacts, synchronize that data between your computer (Cable is compatible with Macintosh 10.2 systems) and cell phone, and access the Internet via a wireless modem-like Internet connection.*

By entering contact names and numbers into your computer, using the desktop software you can quickly and easily synchronize and save that data to your phone.

Kyocera's phone desktop software will allow you to Drag and Drop data from Microsoft® Outlook® and Outlook Express messaging and collaboration clients to your Kyocera Wireless phone.

Included with the Kyocera Phone Desktop Software is our USB data cable. In addition to data transfer functionality the USB data cable has a charging port to accommodate our Kyocera Travel Charger TXTVL10010L (Use the link below to purchase the Kyocera Travel Charger, under the Kyocera Rave series phone section of the store). Plug this Travel Charger into the data cable's port and charge your phone's battery in approximately 2 - 3 hours.

Kyocera Phone Desktop Software does NOT support Macintosh operating systems.

*Internet connection requires CDMA data services from your service provider.

In that case metro would be a pretty good deal if there was a bigger coverage area.

how fast of a connection would u get on average? better than dial-up i would assume but maybe not as fast as dsl, then again maybe it is worse

It would probably be about the speed of dial up- you have you remember, it's just like a phone line...

Using the phone as a data gateway on VM's network will not work. They don't support that type of data transfer.

You can still use other (non VM) slider phones as a modem, it would be like a dialup modem and you still need a ISP to dial to. That is unless the carrier does support data transfer. Then it would work just fine. It depends on your carier plan if you will be charged or not.

The V5 slider has no data transfer cabability intended for internet access. I don't even think it has the software on the phone to utilize it in the first place. As well as VM not supporting wireless data. (Yes they quasi-support wap, thats a bit different application.)

In either case it's not gonna happen if VM is involved.

according to the modem set up instructions on kyocera's site, the max speed of the slider and most other phones is 14.4, hardly worth the effort even if we could get it working.

*sigh*

I tried it. The answer is 'no'. VM Slider doesn't even recognize as a modem, even with the Kyocera drivers and data cable. Period. You aren't gonna be doing this.
