New phones

I see people all over the place with the nicest phones from Korea and Hong Kong...

My questions is, how exactly are they using these new phones over here in North America? I'm not sure if the phones are using CDMA or GSM, but my guess would be CDMA since they're incredibly thin. Is there some place where people in North America can go to buy this latest technology that [seemingly] works in both the Asia mainland and North America? This really baffles me...

except that korea uses 800MHz cdma that is compatible with the networks here.

Theoretically then, would it be possible to purchase an unlocked 800MHz CDMA phone from Korea and use it on the North American networks...?

It's a pretty interesting thought

you would just have to make sure 800MHz service is available where you live and that the provider you want to activate the phone with will activate the phone.

CDMA 800 from Korea should work. Technically, CDMA 800 is available in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, china, and soon taiwan.

As long as you have the ESN, manufacturer/carrier unlock codes, and it meets specs, it technically should work.

I work for a cell phone company (typing from work) that manufacture both GSM and CDMA 1x modules and handsets, and i personally think that GSM blows chunks.

GSM might as well be called "TDMA 2.0" for all that matters.
