How do the "other" phones compare to Nokia, Motorola, and the Sony Ericsson models?

I would not put Sony Ericsson or Motorola on the same tier as Nokia! There is a reason that they own the marketshare they due. I have switched to Panasonic branded phones though, because of the feature set in the phone. The UI is friendlier, the phone book is light years ahead of anything I had in my older Nokia and Ericsson phones, At the time, the 3 tone polyphonic speakers was ahead of the others, you had 7 backlight choices, voice activation and voice memo. It has a built in vibrator and downloadable ringtones and pictures. It just seemed a more complete package for the money. Most here will probably point out that the Nokia is cheaper. Well I am not planning on changing my carrier and I do not get the subsidy for the phone. I have to pay full price and the Nokia is more expensive than the Panasonic. I suffer a little in battery life, but with the Li-ion, I simply top off my battery ever day or two and there is no problem. The battery can deal with this easily. My versio that I had fell 140 ft from an amusement park ride and survived with only the case being damaged. Comparably, my Ericson display was ruined sitting by the pool in the summer from humidity. My Nokia display got broken (not totally unexpected) when I stepped on it with my boots on. Also on my 6160, the antenna broke easy. I have played with one of the Sony Ericsson GSM phones and (especially for a $500 phone) it is a POS. You hit a button and can wait up to 10 seconds to see the phone react. The display is very small compared to other GPRS enabled handsets and it has more trouble getting on the GPRS network than either the Nokia or Motorola. I think I will wait for one of the Panasonic GSM phones to be released in the USA before I buy another one. I expect by christmas they will be out.
My 2 cents anyway

nokia, motorola, and sony/ericsson are over rated. all most all of the asian phone manufacturers make much better, full featured, less expensive phones. sanyo, samsung, lg , and kyocera phones are excelent, and they cost 1/2 as much as the nokia/motorola/(sony/ericsson)

but those companies do not have GSM phones as the SE,nokia and motorola do....of course the marketing is the another story but technology wise this is the explanation why they are not popular.

everyone knows that Nokia is the most popular, but do u know............

Global phones sales dip
Nokia..............................34.7%
Motorola.........................15.5%
Samsung..........................9.6%
Siemens............................8.8%
Sony Ericsson....................6.4%

Panasonic has been making GSM products for the European market for a while. They plan on rolling out their first triband GSM phone for christmas this year. The biggest shortcoming that I see is that it will not support Java. I am not really sure how that will impact me. I would imagine it will limit the virus potential on the plus side. BUT this phone has a huge Display, GSM/GPRS, 65K color display, HSCSD, integrated camera, PIM, Multimedia SMS protocols, 16 tone polyphonic ringer and more. I look forward to seeing it roll out in the stores. I believe a lower cost 1900 GSM phone is being rolled out either Q4 2002 or Q1 2003 but I have few details on it. I do not believe thought that it will be sold through US distribution chains.

I was at the AT&T store yesterday and happen to catch a sneak peak at the Panasonic GD-87 phone. SWEET! It has the biggest display that I have seen on a cell phone. 67K colors, PIM, vibrator, voice activation, voice memo, SMS chat, MMS, WAP, built in camera etc.
You can download graphics, screensavers, melodies, wallpapers, pictures and GAMES to it. Heck, they finally got it right by adding a calculator to it. It is due out sometime this fall and by that time the Atlanta metro area will have AT&T GSM.

So it is a gsm phone... Bummer

I never see any nice tdma phones

Is it a thin phone?

Posted by: lost_rebel

It was a little thinner that the new Motorola phone but wider (to accomodate the big screen) and about the same height. The color screen looks awesome. There are other groups on this website with more information

Siemens S40 was developed by Bosch

This has to be one of the funniest posts I've seen. Clearly Motorolla is a maker of ugly, ancient, giants. Sony ericsson is nice, but... their design is a little too.. childish I suppose. Nokia? Nokia hasn't impressed me at all. Everyone seems to love that tacky little phone they have but to me it's just... why would you buy that, when there are other great mobiles out there? Someone previously said "almost all asian phones are better" which is very true. I own a Sanyo, and I have to say overall I'm impressed. Maybe America is just not ready for 65k color, 384 k wireless speed, and color wireless internet... not to mention a boat load of other features...
