bad voice quality on Sanyo 5500(VM4500)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: spage

Hi, my first ever post.

Replacing an old Samsung N200 cellphone on SprintPCS.

The Sanyo SCP5500 (SprintPCS calls it the VM4500) "sounds" like a great phone, but *sounded* bad in the store. Callers calling the phone sounded like they were speaking into a fuzzy microphone played back in a cardboard box. Fiddling with the volume didn't help and this is NOT using the speakerphone. It wasn't awful, but noticeably worse than the other phones.

What's bizarre is that calls placed to the Sanyo 8100 next to it sounded much better.

Is this just a defect of the demo phone? (The Sprint store people shrugged.) I see some of you phone junkies have upgraded from one Sanyo model to the other; can anyone say categorically if the sound quality of the VM4500 is the same as the 8100?

Thanks!

well, I had 8100 before and now with 5500. I have not really noticed a difference in earpiece sound quality between the two.

check my post in the sprint forum. I disagree with everyone on here. Earpiece quality has gone down the tube. Everyone who bought a 5500 doesnt want to fess up to it because they are too busy assuring themselves that they did the right thing by buying a $400 phone.

I wholeheartly Disagree. While, when I am at home, the quality seems to be a bit low, I do live in a pretty much dead spot for sprint. This is one of the few phones that would pick up ANY service here, so for that i'm happy.

If I'm in a good service area, i'm quite happy with the voice quality, and I have heard to problems with the people that I am speaking to for that matter.

My only other basis on cell phones was my Nokia 3360 though, so I haven't had any other Next Gen. phones until my 5500.

We have never met and you know me so well. AMAZING, You should get a job with Psychic Friends Network. I can tell you that my 5500 sounds just fine. I have to turn down the volume when using the earpiece because it blasts my eardrum. Where did you come up with the theory that just because a few pieces of equipment fail it means the whole line is bad.

You sure know it all, totally amazing. When is your psychic tour? Like to see you perform some of these amazing feats live. I went thru three phones, VGA1000, 8100 and 7200, before settling on the 5500 because of the quality. There is an old saying we need to adhere to, "TO EACH THEIR OWN" What doesnt work for one person may work for another.

Agreed. The volume is great, but the quality is very poor. There are MUCH clearer phones available for Sprint. Some people are more sensitive to the muddy Sanyo earpieces than others. If you're one of them, check out some of Sprint's other phones. $400 is way too much to waste on a phone that doesn't work very well as a phone. "Huh? What'd you say?"

where you do you get this trash about me being psychic?
I have seen on here about everyone raving about Sanyo's. All I am saying is that the quality of their ear pieces has gotten extremely worse. I have my opinion after owning several sanyo's and you after owning the 5500. It sounds like there is a crackling and static on the line in all 3 of my 8100s. I dont consider this to be a fluke, nor do I think other 8100 and 5500 owners to be wrong either. If you like Psychics so much, go live with Miss Cleo in jail.

Both of my 5500s sound crystal clear. Clearest sounding of any phone I've ever owned. I've owned dozens.

There are enough posting about bad sound quality that it makes me think that there's likely a bad batch of 5500s out there.

I am refering to the statement you made saying "Everyone who bought a 5500 doesnt want to fess up" I dont need to fess up to anything. I know the quality of the sound from my 5500 compared to other phones. One reason I still have it. I was not trying to insult you, sorry. But you cant place everyone into the same catagory as the few out there that do need to justify buying the phone.

Once again you show how ignorant you are. Just because someone owns a 5500 you automatically think they paid $400 for it. You need to get off the 5500 bashing trip and get a life jj. I actually paid $229 for mine, last time I did my math that doesnt even come close to $400.

This thread is dangerously close to being closed.

Make arguments, don't flame each other.

Posted by: Mastec

Sorry, but someone needs to stop jj and his "mine is better than yours" talk. There is no need for it. Like I have said in the past, we all know he likes his 4050. Why does he have to put down every other phone just because its not the infamous Toshiba? Last time I checked this is America and a free country, we are free to make our own decisions without persecution. Everyones decision what phone to use should be left up to that individuals preferences and not pushed on us by jj. I like many other people come to these forums for information and do not want to see someone bashing another just because of the phone he chooses to use.

I used another brand phone in the past and now I cant stand the company, do I go around bashing them all the time? Do I go around and tell people not to buy them just because I dont like it? Answer is no to each. Can jj say the samething? No again.

I hope this is the case because I really like my 5500 but the sound quality is terrible! I'm used to my 5300 where I can't even tell I'm on a cell phone. I'm heading back to Best Buy tonight and exchanging it for a different one.
I'm also one of the people that can't get Vision working properly. Today is day 4 for me since activating the phone. Still visionless I'm going blind!!
Maybe I'll be doing myself a favor and killing two birds with one stone

Exactly...trust me, there are others.

The sound quality IMO is not excellent. The sounds are very low and hard to discern between words that sound alike. I wish there was a way to turn up the treble on the earpiece setting. Is it just my phone that has this problem? However when I use an earpiece the sounds is pretty darn good. The phone has great reception so I have gotten used to the sub quality sound. No big deal. I manage to get by...

I have owned many phones and Motorola's V60i (ATT) had the best earpiece quality in terms of sound. The 5300's was not bad...my two new 5500's seem a little muffled. What I tried last night was call and left v/m's on my work and home machines, both came out sounding great, so this little complaint may only reside on the earpice end. Should go return both units at BB? Well, let me wait the full 30 days and see if it's worth the hassle. I mean, the 5500's sound quality is better the both our A500's, VI660s and Nokia 8260's, just a little muffled, but again I have the V60i to compare against. Maybe I am spoiled..

This is a 400 dolalr phone? WOw!

I just got it mailed to me because I dropped my 8100 in the toilet I didn't know it was a new phone I guess I will be here tomorrow to tell my story on it. After I activate it .

MOT earpiece & sound quality is top notch.
I had noticed that my 8100 was not as clear when compared to my former TimePort.

However, I think the 8100's ear piece is placed @ the very edge of the flip & sometimes I would place it @ the very top part of my ear. Which would cover it & muffle the sound.

I noticed this & move the earpiece opening lower towards the canal opening & walla sound improvement.

Still not MOT but not bad like some have implied here.

The poor Sanyo earpiece sound seems to be due to their design, not a hardware defect. They fixed the problem with the earpiece needing to be held just right to find the sweetspot, but the muffled sound remains.

It's really just personal preference. It's like different people setting their car stereos differently. Some like more bass, some more midrange, some more treble.

If you like the way that the Timeports and Vaders sounded, you'll likely be disappointed with the new Sanyos. I prefer the sound of the A500 or 4050. I would love for Motorola to update the V8162 as it had a great earpiece.

I have the vm4500 - before that I had the Sanyo 6200.
Sound quality is on par - they were both equally good. If anything reception on the vm4500 is better, leading to clearer calls.

None of my friends have ever had trouble understanding me, in fact, when I use the speaker, I 've had to tell them to much amazement that I'm on the speakerphone.

I even call overseas and people tell me that it feels like I'm calling from a local landline.

The only thing that's a bit worse is the voice--enabled dialling - the 6200 was much better. I loved the fact that if it wasn't sure, it would ask you. Though the 4500 when it starts dialling tells you the name its dialling so you know if it recognized the right name.

No problems here, and I did some testing in the store and home to make sure there were no issues.

i agree that there may be a bad batch of these phones out there because the sound on mine is great, loud and clear (have to keep it at 1 b/c it's so loud). I had a t608 and 8100 before this. I've had phones with Tmobile and Verizon as well. If the sound is bad on your phone, I really suggest returning and getting another one because it is clearly not a universal issue. I love everything about this phone!

Posted by: Aviator

I mentioned this sound quality issue a long time ago. Mine is only bad sometimes....it depends who i'm talking to and what kind of phone they have. When it sounds bad, it just sounds distorted as if it's too loud, but lowering the volume doesn't help it. Most of the time however, it sounds fine. I have absolutely no regrets about this phone. It is EASILY the best phone I have ever purchased.

The Only Thing That I Have To Say About Earpiece Quality Is That I Wish The Volume Issue Would Get Fixed Already. As Far As Sound Quality Goes, It's Pretty Comparible To The 5300. Normally, Sanyo Is Pretty Good About Releasing Firmware/software Fixes..cont

As Far As The Above Comment Is Concerned, I Love My Phone A Lot & I Was Far From Paying $400 For It. I Actually Spent Only $130. There Are Only A Couple Things About This Phone That Are Peevish To Me But I'm Assured Because They Are Only Software Related
