Need help coverting Divx/Xvid format

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi all,

I have a p900 and might i say its a fine piece of kit. I primarily use it as a phone and a movie player.

Basically the problem i have atm is that i am unsure as to how to convert Divx/Xvid formats into avi/mpeg formats, so that i can then use mpegableX4live to convert it to mp4. I.e. Are there any pieces of software than can manage doing this?

I have FX mpeg writer and it can extract the the movie properly, however i get no sound, which is very weird.

Please can you guys make some suggestions, any suggestion big or small.

PS: i buy the films in Divx/Xvid formats from a reputable site, that supplys movies on demand.

isnt xvid and divx usually in avi or mpeg format. i dont get this conversion ur asking for. also if u want u can try tmpgenc.

well this is an awkward one, basically Divx and Xvid are Avi files, but not true Avi formats, they are just another version of Avi (I am not sure how to explain it on a technical level). I hope this doesnt confuse you. Basically, i cant get divx/xvid files to be directly converted to mp4 by mpegable X4live. When i try to do it i get an error, saying that its not a supported format. Therefore, i would obviously need to convert the Divx/Xvid formats to either a proper .avi format or .mpeg format (which i dont know how to do and require help!) so that mpegable X4 live can recognise it and hence i would be able to encode it into mp4 format to play on my phone.

You could try virtuadub. You can find it at dvdrhelp.com. I used this before when converting stuff for my pc. I have started using it to convert some movie trailers into avi format and then converting using mobiclip.

I had problems with .mp4 and .3gp. The sound and video was out of sync. Not wanting to jack the thread, but if anyone can help me with this then please feel free to PM me.

I have tried mpegable x4 live and pv author.

i have problems with that for awhile now. i believe using vdub to make a copy of the exact file might fix that. also with the out of sync issue. if it starts off in sync and then eventually out of sync then ur comp is running too many things and ur system resources is low. u gotta turn everything off even ur anti virus scanner. i tend to have this a lot because i have a million things connected to my laptop. also another problem is that ur comp might be too slow in processor speed to handle the conversoin. but idont know ur setup.

The problem is full screen. I can play it in normal screen fine, but when I use full screen it starts getting out of sync. I have tried a lot of different settings, but nothing has helped so far.

I have almost everything closed when encoding, I also have an AMD 1800+ with 1GB SDRAM PC133.

Try VirtualDub or TMPGenc

thanx for the reply, i am using virtual dub atm, and it works fine. However, now there is another problem. The size of the (encoded to avi) end movie is too big, about a gig in size. Therefore i am having problems in fitting it onto the fone in mp4 format with pretty good settings (using mpegableX4live). I dont wanna have to make the image quality any worse otherwise it would be pointless to watch. I already sacrificed the sound quality but its still too damn big to fit onto one 128 meg stick. Can someone give me a list of settings that i can use in virtual dub so that i can have an avi file that is roughly 600- 700 megs in size rather than a 1 gig or any referrals to sites that can help me get the correct settings that i am after?

Any help will be appreciated. Me and my problems eh?

PS: I would like to thank everyone who has tried to help, ur help is most appreciated. Yes! even the guy who stole my thread.......

Ah, But I stole it and gave you something back in return.

there are many different compressers and filters that can be used in Virtuadub.

Try encoding it with the mpeg-4 codec. This is just about where my knowledge reaches to on virtuadub i'm afraid. You could try dvdrhelp.com as they have plenty of guides on everything to do with encoding sort of stuff.

Hope you get your problem sorted!

well according to vw3, if ur using his hi rez encoding the file will be too big and that u will need to split the file into 2 or 3 files and put them on seperate duos.
